Vocabulary is a zoom lens.
You can say animal. You can say dog. You can say spaniel. You can say cocker spaniel. Each choice points to the same general world while changing how much detail the listener receives.
Granularity is the level of detail built into the language. Specificity is how narrowly a word identifies the thing, process, property or relationship being discussed.
Strong vocabulary means knowing when to zoom in, when to zoom out, and when extra detail becomes false precision.

The third sentence carries more information. The specificity helps if breed, condition and movement matter.
But if the only relevant fact is that an animal obstructed traffic, the extra detail may be unnecessary.

If you write vehicle, you commit only to a broad category. If you write electric sedan, you now claim both body type and propulsion system.
That means specificity should rise only when the evidence can carry it.
False Precision
False precision happens when language becomes more exact than the underlying evidence.
A learner sees a blurry image and writes that “a twelve-year-old boy in a navy cotton shirt entered the shop at 3:17 pm”. The sentence sounds detailed. The evidence may not justify any of those details.

This applies to science, source analysis, reporting, comprehension and everyday argument.
Specificity and Distinction
Vocabulary Distinction asks how neighbouring words differ. Granularity asks a different question: how narrow should the category be?
For example, problem, constraint, bottleneck, risk and failure are not simply more or less specific versions of one another. They classify different structures. Granularity works only after the correct semantic family has been chosen.

Lexical Economy asks whether one precise word can compress a longer explanation. Granularity asks whether that compressed term is at the right level of detail.
These are related but distinct jobs.

Specificity in Narrative Writing

Specificity in Mathematics
Mathematics depends heavily on category precision. Shape is broad. Quadrilateral narrows. Parallelogram narrows further. Rectangle narrows differently according to properties.
Vocabulary mirrors logical inclusion relationships. Learning the hierarchy can strengthen conceptual understanding.
Specificity in History and Humanities
A broad label such as conflict may be enough initially. Later analysis may require civil war, insurgency, occupation, border dispute or proxy conflict.
The narrower term changes the explanatory model.
Specificity in Emotion Vocabulary
Upset is broad. It may conceal disappointment, grief, embarrassment, frustration, fear or anger.
Emotional vocabulary becomes more useful when the learner moves from vague distress toward the correct type and then calibrates intensity.
This links with Intensity and Gradation: first identify the category, then the degree.
Specificity in Argument
Broad claims often become more defensible when narrowed.
“Technology harms society” is extremely broad.
“Algorithmic recommendation systems can amplify misleading content under certain engagement-driven conditions” is far more specific.
The second sentence is not automatically true, but it gives us a claim precise enough to examine.
Specificity Can Reduce Overclaiming
Narrowing the subject, condition or mechanism often prevents sweeping claims.
- people → some adolescents;
- technology → short-form recommendation platforms;
- causes → may contribute to;
- bad outcomes → poorer sleep quality.
Granularity therefore works closely with Stance and Hedging.
When Broad Words Are Better
Broad language is useful when:
- the evidence is incomplete;
- the detail is irrelevant;
- the audience does not need the specialist distinction;
- the category itself is the point;
- the writer wants to generalise deliberately;
- the learner is preserving fluency while a more precise word remains unavailable.
When Narrow Words Are Better
Narrower language is useful when:
- the distinction changes the conclusion;
- the detail is supported by evidence;
- the domain requires technical classification;
- ambiguity would mislead;
- the audience benefits from the additional resolution.
The Zoom-Lens Test
Take one idea and express it at four levels:
living thing → animal → bird → mynah
Then ask which level best fits the current task.
The Evidence Ceiling
Every piece of evidence creates a maximum justified level of specificity.
If you know only that “a vehicle left the scene”, the evidence ceiling may be vehicle. If camera footage clearly shows a motorcycle, the ceiling moves downward to a narrower category.
Do not zoom further than the evidence allows.
The Audience Floor
At the other end, an audience may need language broad enough to remain accessible.
A specialist term can be justified by evidence yet still be unhelpful if the listener cannot process it. The right vocabulary sits between the evidence ceiling and the audience floor.
Primary 1–2: Sort Big Categories and Small Categories
Use picture cards and familiar hierarchies: food → fruit → apple; animal → bird → pigeon. Ask which word gives more detail.
Primary 3–4: Replace Vague Words Selectively
Ask whether thing, animal, said or nice can become more informative without forcing unnecessary detail.
Primary 5–6: Link Specificity to Evidence
Students can justify why one comprehension answer or composition detail is precise enough and another is unsupported.
Secondary 1–2: Build Concept Hierarchies
Map broad and narrow terms across science, geography, literature, history and argument vocabulary.
Secondary 3–4 and JC: Control Analytical Resolution
Advanced learners should move between broad synthesis and narrow analysis deliberately. A strong essay zooms out to show structure and zooms in where the distinction matters.
