A student sits with a Mathematics question for forty minutes because asking for help feels like failure. Another raises a hand before reading the second sentence because waiting for an adult has become the default. A third understands enough to know something is wrong but cannot explain where the route breaks, so the question becomes, “I don’t get it.”
All three students have a help-seeking problem, but the problems are different. One delays help too long. One asks too early. One knows support is needed but cannot formulate the request.
Help-seeking is the ability to recognise when independent effort is no longer producing useful progress, locate the relevant breakpoint, choose an appropriate source of support, ask a question that preserves as much learner ownership as possible, and then return to independent action.
