There may be three days.
There may be one.
There may be an evening after work, a train ride, a morning before the examination, or a narrow collection of hours scattered between other obligations.
The ideal revision plan is no longer available.

But it does not remove the need to make decisions.
When very little time remains, the preparation problem changes again.
You are no longer trying to build the complete learning system you would have built with a month.
You are trying to construct the smallest readiness system that can still produce useful examination performance.

The 50-second answer
When very little time remains, stop trying to complete revision and start building minimum viable readiness.
- Confirm the exact exam format, syllabus boundary and permitted materials.
- Calculate the real hours left.
- Run a short diagnostic before choosing what to study.
- Prioritise high-value, high-connectivity knowledge.
- Repair foundational gaps that block many questions.
- Use retrieval before rereading.
- Use representative exam questions early.
- Build one compact sheet or mental map of formulas, definitions, distinctions, evidence or procedures that truly need rapid access.
- Stop making comprehensive notes.
- Stop collecting new resources unless they solve one specific gap.
- Practise the highest-value response forms under time.
- Protect a finish strategy, logistics and sleep.
The central rule is:
With very little time, every study action must justify the minutes it consumes.
Alicia, Tricia and Kai Kai have one day
Alicia opens the textbook at Chapter 1.
She plans to move as quickly as possible through every chapter.
Tricia begins creating a condensed set of notes for the whole course.
Kai Kai begins with a twenty-minute mixed diagnostic.
She discovers that three topics she feared are actually amber, not red.
One foundational topic is much weaker than she thought.

She spends ninety minutes repairing that dependency.
Then she retrieves the major formulas and definitions.
Then she completes representative questions from the largest mark areas.
Then she runs one timed section.
She does not finish everything.
That is not the measure.
She finishes the day with a functioning route through more of the examination.

First principle: define the actual remaining resource
Do not say:
“I have tomorrow.”
Say:
“I have 7:00–9:00, 10:00–12:00, 14:00–16:00 and 19:00–20:30.”
Now the resource is seven and a half hours.
Subtract meals, travel, setup and ordinary breaks.
Plan with the remainder.

The exact allocation depends on the exam. The point is to make scarcity visible.
Second principle: minimum viable readiness is not minimum effort
This is not a shortcut philosophy.
It is an emergency architecture.
You are asking:
What must work for me to convert a meaningful portion of this paper into marks?
That may include:
- core definitions;
- foundational procedures;
- high-frequency formulas;
- question-reading discipline;
- representative response structures;
- timing;
- submission or answer-transfer rules.
Third principle: use a diagnostic before a study marathon
When time is scarce, a wrong priority is expensive.
Spend a small amount of time testing the system.
Use questions that sample major areas.
Classify:
- green — reliable;
- amber — partial or slow;
- red — cannot start or major misconception.
Then combine this with exam value.
The emergency priority rule
Prioritise roughly in this order:
- high-value red foundational gaps;
- high-value amber topics that can become green quickly;
- high-frequency retrieval items;
- representative question forms;
- low-value rare details last.
This is a heuristic, not a substitute for the official syllabus.
Fourth principle: protect the dependencies
A missing foundational skill can make several later topics inaccessible.
Examples:
- algebra before advanced Mathematics;
- basic stoichiometric relationships before more complex Chemistry calculations;
- sentence boundaries before editing and extended writing;
- core causal mechanisms before advanced Biology explanation;
- source reading before source evaluation.
Find the earliest missing dependency.
The dependency question
Ask:
If I fix this, what else starts working?
If the answer is “many things,” the repair has leverage.
Fifth principle: choose fast-convertible amber before impossible red
Not every red topic can be rescued in a few hours.
Some amber topics may need only one distinction, one formula condition or one practice set to become reliable.
When time is extremely limited, quick conversions can be valuable.
Do not spend half the remaining day trying to master a huge low-frequency topic from zero if several high-value amber topics can be stabilised.
The conversion test
For each gap, ask:
- How many marks can this influence?
- How long will repair probably take?
- How likely is the repair to transfer by exam time?
Think in expected return per hour.
Sixth principle: retrieval is the default first move
Close the materials.
Try to produce the knowledge.
Then check.
This prevents spending scarce time rereading material that was already retrievable.
It also identifies exactly what is missing.
The ten-minute retrieval burst
For one topic:
- 3 minutes — blank-page recall.
- 4 minutes — representative question.
- 3 minutes — check and repair.
Repeat only where the evidence justifies it.
Seventh principle: do not build a new note empire
Comprehensive note-making is usually too expensive at this stage.
Create only high-function materials.
Examples:
- one formula-and-condition sheet;
- one contrast-pair list;
- one argument/evidence bank;
- one error list;
- one procedure map.
Every item should have an exam job.
Eighth principle: the final sheet is a retrieval surface, not a textbook
A useful compact sheet contains prompts.
Not paragraphs.
It should trigger:
- formula;
- definition;
- method;
- distinction;
- example;
- error warning.
If the exam is closed-book, the sheet is used before the exam and then removed. If resources are permitted, follow the exact rules.
Ninth principle: representative questions outrank exhaustive easy practice
If you can complete ten nearly identical easy questions, the eleventh may have little value.
Use questions that sample:
- core method;
- common variation;
- near-neighbour distinction;
- one unfamiliar form;
- one timed response.
Tenth principle: train the output form
If the exam requires essays, write at least one timed plan and one timed paragraph or essay.
If it requires Mathematics, solve mixed problems.
If it requires oral performance, speak.
If it requires case studies, diagnose and recommend.
If it is practical, perform the procedure.
If it is online, rehearse the platform.
Scarcity makes representativeness more important, not less.
Eleventh principle: learn the mark architecture
Know where marks live.
Which sections are large?
Which question types recur?
Which tasks are compulsory?
Which choices exist?
Which errors destroy several marks at once?
Use the official format and current specimen or past papers where appropriate.
Twelfth principle: do not confuse marks with topic count
Ten small topics may collectively carry fewer marks than one central skill used across the whole paper.
Count consequence, not chapter headings.
Thirteenth principle: memorise selectively
Some items genuinely need rapid recall.
Prioritise:
- high-frequency formulas;
- definitions;
- conditions;
- core vocabulary;
- argument evidence;
- procedure order;
- common exceptions.
Do not attempt to memorise every peripheral detail with equal intensity.
Fourteenth principle: contrast pairs have high return
Many exam errors come from confusing neighbouring ideas.
Examples:
- speed vs velocity;
- accuracy vs precision;
- correlation vs causation;
- literal detail vs inference;
- revenue vs profit;
- mitosis vs meiosis.
Write the single discriminating feature.
Then answer a fresh case.
Fifteenth principle: formula memory includes conditions
Do not learn only the symbol string.
Retrieve:
- formula;
- variables;
- units;
- conditions;
- one rearrangement;
- one reasonableness check.
This prevents fast memorisation from becoming wrong-method selection.
Sixteenth principle: use one error ledger
Do not scatter mistakes across worksheets, apps and notebooks.
Create one list.

Review this ledger more often than generic notes.
Seventeenth principle: do not chase every mistake
Some mistakes are rare.
Some are structural.
Prioritise repeated errors and errors that affect many questions.
A single obscure mistake may not deserve an hour.
A repeated sign error might.
Eighteenth principle: use bounded repair
Give a weak area a fixed repair window.
For example:
45 minutes to understand and practise one concept.
Then retest.
If it remains deeply red and low-value, move.
If it is high-value and foundational, allocate another deliberate block.
Do not let one difficult topic consume the entire emergency plan by inertia.
Nineteenth principle: build a stop-doing list immediately
Stop:
- rewriting green-topic notes;
- watching entire lecture series for one missing detail;
- collecting more question banks;
- perfecting revision aesthetics;
- doing endless easy repetitions;
- building a complicated new productivity system;
- checking the clock every five minutes without changing behaviour.
Every stopped activity returns minutes to the critical path.
Twentieth principle: one realistic timed block is worth protecting
Even with little time, try to perform at least one representative section under real timing.
