How Practice-Based Teacher Education Works | Rehearse, Decompose and Approximate Teaching Before the Stakes Are Real

A student teacher can know a great deal about learning, curriculum, assessment and child development and still freeze when thirty learners are waiting for the next move.

The problem is not that theory is useless. The problem is that professional knowledge does not automatically arrive in the form required for live teaching. A classroom demands perception, explanation, questioning, response, timing, judgement, coordination and adaptation while the lesson continues moving.

Practice-Based Teacher Education responds to that gap by treating teaching as practice that can be studied and rehearsed, not only discussed. It asks teacher education to give novices repeated opportunities to see important teaching practices, break them into learnable components, enact them under reduced complexity, receive feedback, and gradually recombine them in increasingly authentic settings.

Practice-Based Teacher Education works by moving professional learning closer to the actual work of teaching. Rather than expecting coursework to transfer automatically into classroom performance, teacher educators deliberately design cycles of representation, decomposition, approximation, feedback and recomposition.

Novices watch and analyse teaching, identify consequential components of the practice, rehearse those components or shortened versions of the whole activity, receive targeted feedback, try again, and eventually perform with real learners under conditions of growing complexity and responsibility.

Why knowing about teaching is not the same as being able to teach

Consider questioning. A novice may understand that good questions should reveal thinking, invite explanation and avoid doing the reasoning for the learner. Yet in a live classroom, the teacher must hear an answer, decide what it reveals, choose whether to probe, redirect or explain, maintain participation, protect psychological safety and keep the lesson coherent.

The knowledge matters. But performance requires that knowledge to be coordinated with perception and action under time pressure. The same gap appears in classroom discussion, modelling, feedback, checking for understanding, behaviour response, explanation and lesson transitions.

Practice-based preparation therefore treats enactment as a legitimate object of curriculum.

The first move: represent practice

Before novices can practise teaching intelligently, they need representations of what the practice looks and sounds like. These can include classroom video, transcripts, lesson plans, student work, annotated demonstrations, case records and live modelling.

A representation should do more than show polished performance. If novices watch an expert teach without help seeing the structure, they may notice charisma, pace or surface style rather than the professional decisions underneath.

Teacher educators therefore direct attention: What did the teacher know at this point? What evidence came from the student response? Why did the teacher wait rather than correct? What alternative move was available? What changed after the probe?

Representation turns practice from something to admire into something that can be inspected.

The second move: decompose practice

Teaching is too complex to practise all at once from the beginning. Decomposition temporarily separates parts of a practice so the novice can attend to them.

  • eliciting a student explanation;
  • pressing for evidence;
  • revoicing an idea without changing its meaning;
  • checking whether the class understood an example;
  • giving a direction that is concise and observable;
  • responding to an incorrect answer without closing the thinking;
  • ending a discussion by consolidating what was learned.

Decomposition makes deliberate attention possible. But it creates a danger: the parts can become detached from the whole. A teacher who practises “ask a follow-up question” as an isolated technique may learn to ask follow-ups mechanically, even when the learner has already given enough evidence.

The part is useful only if it is eventually recomposed inside the larger judgement.

The third move: approximate practice

An approximation of practice preserves important features of professional work while reducing some of its complexity or consequence. The novice gets to perform, but the environment is deliberately safer or narrower than full independent teaching.

  • rehearse a five-minute explanation to peers;
  • respond to a simulated student misconception;
  • conduct a short discussion with a small group;
  • analyse video, pause at a decision point and state the next move;
  • teach one segment while a mentor manages the rest of the lesson;
  • role-play a parent conversation with a defined communication problem;
  • work through student responses and choose a next instructional question.

The approximation should preserve the learning target. If the target is responding to unpredictable student thinking, a scripted rehearsal in which every answer is known in advance may become too easy. If the target is clarity of explanation, reducing classroom-management complexity may be exactly the right simplification.

Reduce the wrong complexity and the practice becomes fake

Every approximation removes something. That is its purpose. The design question is what can be removed without removing the professional problem.

This is the same design logic used in flight simulation, clinical education and emergency training: simplify enough to learn, but preserve the structure that makes the capability real.

Feedback must attach to the enacted move

Practice without feedback can stabilise weak habits. But broad feedback—“be more confident,” “engage the class,” “ask better questions”—does not tell a novice what to change.

Practice-based feedback is strongest when it points to observable moments: You asked three questions before giving wait time. You rephrased the student answer and accidentally removed the uncertainty. You explained the procedure correctly but never checked the concept underneath. You saw the misconception but corrected it before the student had to articulate the faulty rule.

The next rehearsal can then target one change. Improvement becomes executable.

Rehearsal is not performance theatre

A rehearsal can become artificial if everyone knows the goal is to look competent. The more useful norm is that rehearsal exists to expose the next thing to improve.

That changes the culture. Pausing is allowed. Rewinding is useful. A teacher educator can interrupt and ask, “What evidence are you using?” A peer can replay a more difficult student response. The novice can attempt the same move three times with different wording.

Real classrooms rarely offer that density of retry. Teacher education should.

Recomposition: the step that prevents technique collecting

Novices can accumulate techniques without developing teaching. Cold calling, wait time, checking for understanding, worked examples and feedback can become a bag of moves used independently of purpose.

Recomposition puts the pieces back inside a coherent instructional problem. The teacher must decide which move serves the learning goal, the learner state and the moment. Sometimes the best follow-up is another question. Sometimes it is a model. Sometimes the class needs more time. Sometimes the teacher should stop probing and consolidate.

This is why instructional routines are valuable but insufficient. Repeatable structures can reduce avoidable load; professional judgement decides how the structure is inhabited.

A worked example: learning to respond to an incorrect answer

Suppose a novice teacher is learning to respond when a student gives a wrong mathematics answer.

Representation: the novice watches three short clips. In one, the teacher corrects immediately. In another, the teacher asks for the student’s reasoning. In the third, the teacher asks a second student to compare approaches. The group studies what each move reveals and risks.

Decomposition: the novice practises four micro-skills: acknowledge the contribution without declaring it correct, elicit the reasoning, identify the diagnostic point, and choose a response that keeps the mathematical goal intact.

Approximation: a peer plays a student using one of several misconception cards. The novice has thirty seconds to respond. The card is hidden so the response cannot be memorised.

Feedback: the teacher educator identifies the exact point at which the novice either preserved or closed the reasoning opportunity.

Recomposition: the novice teaches a ten-minute segment to real students, now coordinating the response with lesson pacing, participation and the next example.

The professional capability emerges through cycles, not from one lecture on “handling misconceptions.”

Why classroom video can be powerful—and misleading

Video lets novices revisit moments that live teaching makes fleeting. They can inspect student responses, teacher positioning, question sequences and timing. But video shows only what the camera captured, and viewers bring their own attention.

A strong video task therefore has a professional question. Do not simply ask, “What did you notice?” Ask, “At what moment did evidence of misunderstanding first appear?” or “Which teacher move changed who was doing the cognitive work?” The question turns viewing into disciplined noticing.

Practice-based does not mean theory-free

A false contrast places theory on one side and practice on the other. Skilled practice depends on explanatory knowledge. A teacher deciding how much support to provide needs ideas about cognition, prior knowledge, motivation, curriculum and evidence.

The difference is that theory is repeatedly returned to action. A principle is used to interpret a case, design a move, predict an outcome and explain what happened. Practice supplies friction against vague understanding; theory supplies structure that prevents experience from becoming a collection of anecdotes.

The cross-domain comparison: teacher education as clinical preparation

Medicine, aviation, emergency response, sport and music have long faced the same problem: novices need meaningful practice before the most consequential real performance. None solves the problem by saying, “Learn the theory first, then figure out the practice alone.”

They use cases, simulation, coached rehearsal, progressive responsibility, debriefing and repeated exposure to representative problems. Teaching differs from these professions in important ways, but the shared design problem is clear: complex professional judgement needs a bridge between declarative knowledge and unsupervised performance.

That bridge is not one practicum at the end. It is an engineered progression of practice opportunities throughout preparation.

High-leverage practice without standardised personality

Practice-based programmes often organise learning around recurring practices that matter across many lessons: eliciting thinking, modelling, facilitating discussion, checking understanding, establishing routines, giving feedback and building relationships.

The educational value comes from giving novices repeated access to consequential work. The danger comes when a practice is treated as a fixed script or branded technique that must look identical in every classroom.

A practice should specify the professional job and important constraints while leaving room for context, subject, age, culture and teacher judgement. Standardise the purpose and critical conditions more readily than the personality.

Progressive complexity

A novice should not remain forever in microteaching. Support should fade as capability grows.

  1. Recognise. Identify the practice and its purpose in examples.
  2. Discriminate. Compare stronger and weaker enactments.
  3. Rehearse. Perform a bounded version with coaching.
  4. Vary. Encounter different student responses and contexts.
  5. Integrate. Combine the practice with other teaching demands.
  6. Enact with learners. Perform in authentic settings with supervision.
  7. Reflect from evidence. Analyse student response, not just teacher intention.
  8. Repeat under changed conditions. Build adaptable rather than one-context competence.

This progression resembles the logic of scaffolding: support is valuable because it enables performance that can later survive without the support.

What should count as evidence of improvement?

Teacher performance cannot be inferred from confidence alone. Nor should one polished rehearsal be treated as proof of durable capability.

  • Does the novice recognise the relevant classroom cue?
  • Can the novice choose a move and explain why it fits?
  • Can the move be enacted clearly and fluently?
  • Does the teacher respond when the learner behaves unexpectedly?
  • Does the practice improve the quality of student participation or thinking?
  • Can the capability survive a different topic, class or lesson phase?
  • Can the novice recover after a weak move rather than collapse?

The evidence should move from performance of the move toward consequences for learners and adaptability across contexts.

Failure modes

  • The technique checklist: novices collect moves without understanding when or why to use them.
  • The theatre rehearsal: practice rewards looking confident instead of exposing decision quality.
  • The over-scripted approximation: the scenario removes the uncertainty that the teacher actually needs to learn to handle.
  • The permanent micro-skill: decomposed pieces are never recomposed into whole teaching.
  • The feedback flood: every weakness is corrected at once, making the next attempt impossible to focus.
  • The practicum cliff: preparation stays theoretical until the novice suddenly receives near-full classroom responsibility.
  • The context blindness: a practice is taught as universal even though subject, age, culture and learner state change its enactment.
  • The teacher-only lens: evaluation watches what the teacher did but not what students understood or were able to do next.

A design test for any teacher-education module

Take one module and ask five questions.

  1. What professional practice should become more capable?
  2. How will novices see a strong representation of that practice?
  3. Which parts need temporary decomposition?
  4. Where will novices actually enact an approximation and retry it?
  5. How will the parts return to authentic classroom performance and learner evidence?

If a module has readings, lectures, discussion and an essay but no answer to question four, it may teach important knowledge while leaving the enactment bridge unbuilt.

What the research says carefully

Pam Grossman, Karen Hammerness and Morva McDonald’s influential 2009 work argued for taking the clinical aspects of teaching seriously and adding pedagogies of enactment to teacher education. Related research has used the framework of representations, decompositions and approximations of practice to connect coursework with field-based teaching.

The evidence base is not a license to claim that any rehearsal automatically improves teaching or student outcomes. Approximation quality, coaching, context, programme coherence and opportunities to recompose practice all matter. Recent scholarship also continues to examine how decomposed practices can be reassembled without stripping teaching of its interactive and improvisational nature.

Teachers should not have to discover every consequential teaching move for the first time while real learners absorb the cost.

Practice-Based Teacher Education creates a middle space between talking about teaching and being fully responsible for it. In that space, practice can be slowed down, represented, decomposed, rehearsed, challenged, corrected and tried again.

The final goal is not rehearsal. It is a teacher whose judgement remains usable when the rehearsal disappears and the classroom becomes real.
