The chapter you remember best can begin to feel like the chapter that matters most.

The formula that comes immediately to mind feels central. The historical example you can retrieve feels representative. The scientific theory whose name you remember feels more important than the one sitting just beyond reach. Memory has become a voting system, and whatever is easiest to access gets more votes.

Quick answer

A 2025 Memory & Cognition study found that memory accessibility was related to judgments of importance. Participants learned scientific theories and later rated how important the theories were. Successfully recalled theories were judged more important than theories that were not recalled. Even when retrieval failed, stronger feelings of knowing were associated with higher importance ratings. When memory was tested by recognition rather than more demanding cued recall, the relationship between memory accuracy and importance was attenuated.

The authors interpret the results as evidence that people can use the subjective accessibility of information as a cue when judging importance. But they also emphasise an important limitation: value, encoding and retrieval influence one another, so the direction of causality is not cleanly isolated. Information may be remembered because it was already considered important, and remembering it may also reinforce the impression that it matters.

The studying lesson is simple to state and easy to violate: retrievability is evidence about memory, not necessarily evidence about importance.

The reverse of a familiar learning story

Students often hear that important information should receive more attention, deeper processing and more retrieval practice. That direction is sensible: value can guide memory.

But there is a reverse direction that matters too. Once some information becomes more accessible in memory, the learner may infer that it is important because it is accessible.

Those two directions can form a loop:

  1. I think this matters.
  2. I study it more.
  3. I remember it more easily.
  4. Its ease of recall now feels like proof that it matters.
  5. I allocate even more attention to it.

The loop can be adaptive when the original priority was correct. It becomes dangerous when the initial accessibility came from repetition, familiarity, vividness or accidental exposure rather than true value.

What the experiments asked

Castillo and colleagues asked participants to learn a set of scientific theories. On later tests, participants attempted to retrieve theory names from definitions and rated the importance of the theories for understanding the world. Across experiments, recalled theories tended to receive higher importance judgments than forgotten theories.

The researchers also examined feelings of knowing: the sense that an answer is available somewhere in memory even when it cannot currently be produced. Stronger feelings of knowing were positively related to importance judgments after retrieval failure. In another experiment, the bias was smaller when participants used recognition, a test that supplies the possible answer and therefore reduces some of the demands of retrieval.

This pattern supports the idea that subjective accessibility can enter the value judgment itself. The mind may reason, implicitly, “If this comes to me, it probably matters.”

Why accessibility feels diagnostic

In ordinary life, accessibility often is informative. Important things are repeated. Names of close family members are retrieved often. Core procedures are practised. High-priority information is revisited. The mind therefore has good reason to learn an association between importance and availability.

The problem is that the cue is imperfect. Easy retrieval can also be caused by:

  • recent exposure;
  • a vivid example;
  • frequent practice on one narrow question type;
  • familiar wording;
  • a memorable story;
  • strong emotional salience;
  • an especially good cue;
  • simple material that is easy to recall but low in priority.

Memory accessibility is therefore a mixed signal. Sometimes it reflects importance. Sometimes it reflects the history of exposure.

Worked example: examination revision

Illustrative case. A student revises biology and can immediately explain photosynthesis because it has appeared repeatedly in class, homework and prior tests. The student struggles to retrieve how the kidney regulates water balance.

If accessibility becomes the priority signal, the student may keep returning to photosynthesis because it feels foundational and important. The difficult kidney topic feels peripheral because it is less available.

But the syllabus, recent diagnostic evidence and examination weighting may show the opposite allocation is needed. The feeling of importance is now fighting the evidence of need.

Worked example: history

Illustrative case. One dramatic event has a vivid image, a memorable quotation and a story the teacher told well. A quieter policy change has fewer memorable details but is necessary for explaining the long-term transformation being examined.

The vivid event comes to mind first, so the student gives it too much causal weight in an essay. The problem is not merely forgetting. It is importance inference from accessibility. What is memorable becomes what seems explanatory.

Worked example: mathematics

Illustrative case. A student has practised the quadratic formula so often that it is instantly available. Completing the square is less accessible. Faced with a new quadratic problem, the familiar formula feels like the “main method” even when completing the square would expose structure more clearly or serve the next part of the question better.

Accessibility has quietly become a method-selection heuristic. That can save time, but it can also crowd out less familiar methods that are important under particular conditions.

This is related to the availability heuristic, but it is not the same job

This article addresses a narrower studying problem: the learner can use memory accessibility as evidence about value or priority. The wrong question is not “How common is this?” but “How much does this deserve my attention?”

The present mechanism asks what happens next: once memory has become uneven, does the learner infer value from that unevenness? The two mechanisms can reinforce one another, which is why deliberate priority rules matter.

Build priority outside memory

When study priorities matter, do not ask memory to rank itself. Use an external criterion.

  • Syllabus importance: Is the concept a prerequisite or recurring objective?
  • Diagnostic weakness: Does independent performance show an actual gap?
  • Exam relevance: What forms of performance are repeatedly required?
  • Connectivity: Does this idea unlock several later topics?
  • Error consequence: Does misunderstanding it corrupt many downstream answers?
  • Transfer value: Does the principle recur across contexts?

Those criteria can disagree with what feels important. That disagreement is useful information.

The forgotten-item audit

After a retrieval test, students naturally focus on wrong answers. Add one more question: “Did forgetting this make it feel less important?”

For each failure, classify it:

  1. Low importance and weak memory: perhaps leave it low priority.
  2. High importance and weak memory: urgent repair.
  3. High importance and strong memory: maintain with spacing.
  4. Low importance and strong memory: avoid over-investing simply because it is fluent.

This separates two dimensions that the mind may otherwise collapse into one.

Use the feeling of knowing carefully

A feeling of knowing can be informative about future access. It is not a value label. If a student cannot recall a concept but says, “I know I know this,” the next move should be to test whether the feeling predicts later recognition or retrieval—not to assume the concept is more important because it feels close.

The recognition trap

The research found that the importance bias was reduced when memory was tested through recognition rather than cued recall. Recognition supplies the answer among alternatives, changing the retrieval problem.

For students, this is a reminder that different memory tests create different subjective experiences. A multiple-choice review can make many topics feel equally available because the options supply cues. A blank-page recall test exposes larger accessibility differences. Neither experience should be treated automatically as a ranking of curriculum importance.

Do not confuse “hard to retrieve” with “not worth learning”

Some of the most important knowledge is difficult precisely because it is new, abstract, low-frequency or poorly connected to prior knowledge. Early difficulty can be a reason to invest, not a reason to downgrade.

Likewise, some low-value material is easy because it is repeated constantly. Study systems should not allow familiarity to monopolise attention.

A two-column priority system

Before revision, make two separate ratings for each topic:

  • Importance: determined from syllabus role, prerequisite value, assessment demand and consequences of error.
  • Accessibility: determined from delayed independent retrieval.

Then allocate time from the combination, not from either rating alone. A high-importance, low-accessibility item usually deserves urgent work. A low-importance, high-accessibility item may need very little.

Delayed and independent performance check

One day after study, ask the learner to retrieve a mixed set of topics without notes. Immediately after each attempt, record both accessibility and importance separately. Then reveal an external priority map based on the curriculum or diagnostic plan.

Look for systematic drift: Are the easiest-to-recall topics consistently being rated as more important than the external criteria justify? Are forgotten prerequisites being downgraded? That pattern reveals a study-allocation risk, not merely a memory problem.

For parents and tutors

When a learner says, “This topic is not that important,” ask what evidence supports the judgment. If the answer is essentially “I never see it” or “I can’t remember it,” separate memory from value.

Likewise, when a child keeps revising a favourite topic because it feels central, check whether the syllabus and error record agree. Comfortable accessibility can become a reason to stay where competence is already high.

What not to conclude

The experiments do not prove that retrieval success causes people to value information more in every context. The authors explicitly discuss bidirectionality: perceived importance can strengthen encoding and later memory, while retrieval experience can also shape importance judgments. Their measure of “importance for understanding the world” may also have been interpreted partly as personal relevance or familiarity.

The result should therefore be treated as evidence that memory accessibility can contribute to subjective importance judgments, not as a universal law that remembered information will always be overvalued.

The deeper studying principle

Your memory is a record of what has been encoded, practised, cued and retrieved. It is not a complete map of what deserves attention.

When the easy-to-remember material feels central, check whether the feeling is telling you about the world or merely about your memory history. Good study allocation requires both signals: what matters, and what you can currently access. Keep them separate long enough to make a better decision.
