Source-based examinations appear generous because the evidence is supplied. A document, image, speech, chart, extract, cartoon, testimony or data set sits directly in front of the student. Yet source-based work is difficult precisely because the source is not the answer. It is evidence that must be interpreted.
Strong source analysis asks several questions at once: what does this source say, what does it imply, who produced it, for what purpose, under what circumstances, what can it prove, what can it not prove, and how does it relate to other evidence? Students fail when they stop at content summary or leap beyond the source into unsupported claims.
1. Reading a source is not the same as analysing it
Students often paraphrase the source accurately and expect analysis marks. Summary answers “what is here?” Analysis answers “what does this evidence allow me to conclude about the question?”

Read the source. Identify the claim. Select the evidence. Test its provenance. Compare where useful. Add context carefully. Then make a conclusion no stronger than the evidence can carry.
49. Advanced training: classify sources by what they can prove
Students often classify sources only by form: speech, photograph, report, cartoon, table. A stronger classification asks what evidential job the source can perform. Can it show an official position, a personal experience, a measured trend, a public message, an institutional decision, or a later interpretation?
This functional classification helps prevent misuse. A photograph can show that something was visible at one moment, but not automatically how common it was. A speech can reveal rhetoric and priorities, but not necessarily whether the policy succeeded.
50. Advanced training: provenance should become a causal model
Instead of listing author, date and purpose, ask how each feature could have changed the content. What incentive did the author face? What information was available? What audience reaction mattered? What institutional process shaped the record?
Provenance becomes useful when it explains why this source looks the way it does.

A source produced during an event captures immediate perceptions. A later account may have broader evidence and hindsight. Students should compare these strengths rather than treating one category as automatically superior.

Three sources repeating the same claim do not necessarily provide three independent pieces of evidence. They may all derive from one original report. Corroboration becomes stronger when the sources have genuinely separate information routes.
Students should therefore ask not only whether sources agree, but whether that agreement is independent.

Photographs and images are selected and framed. What is included, excluded, enlarged, centred or cropped can shape interpretation. A photograph documents something real while still being a constructed viewpoint.

Numbers acquire meaning through definitions and collection methods. Before trusting a statistic, ask who collected it, who was counted, what categories were used, what period was measured and whether the denominator changed.

Retrospective personal accounts can be rich in detail and meaning but may be shaped by forgetting, later knowledge and repeated retelling. Students should evaluate what the witness is well placed to remember and what later interpretation may have influenced.

63. Advanced training: institutional records have institutional blind spots
Official records often document what the institution measured, regulated or considered important. They may systematically omit informal activity or people outside administrative categories.
That limitation is analytically useful because it reveals the structure through which the institution saw the world.
64. Advanced training: expert disagreement is evidence
When qualified experts disagree, students should not assume one side must be incompetent. The disagreement may arise from different data, models, assumptions or value judgements.
A strong response identifies the point at which the reasoning diverges rather than merely counting authorities.
