How Advance Organisers Work | Why Learners Need a Map Before New Knowledge Has Somewhere to Go

A lesson can be perfectly clear sentence by sentence and still leave students with nowhere sensible to put the new information.

Most importantly, judge success by learning behaviour: better explanations, better transfer, fewer structural misconceptions, more selective note-taking, and improved ability to reconstruct the topic without the visual.

Before a difficult lesson or chapter, ask: what kind of structure is this?

Is it mainly a sequence? A hierarchy? A comparison? A cause-and-effect system? A set of interacting parts?

Write the simplest version you can. Do not begin by copying every fact. Build the frame first.

As you learn, place new ideas into the frame. If something does not fit, do not force it. Ask whether your organiser needs revising.

The strongest organiser does not try to impress the learner with the teacher’s complete understanding. It gives the learner just enough architecture to start building their own.

Show the shape first. Add the detail carefully. Return to the map while the knowledge grows. Then remove the map and see whether the learner can rebuild the structure unaided.
