Teach adjective order in five layers.

Layer 1 — Ear before terminology. Give pairs such as big blue box / blue big box, old wooden chair / wooden old chair and lovely small house / small lovely house. Ask which sounds neutral. Do not introduce a ten-slot chart until students have heard the contrast.

Layer 2 — Head noun and inside-out building. Start with the noun. Add the tightest classifier or type. Add material/origin/colour. Add age/size. Add evaluation last. Let students physically build phrases using cards from the noun outward.

Layer 3 — Coordinate versus cumulative. Teach the and test and reversal test. Connect the structure directly to comma use.

Layer 4 — Marked order and meaning. Give a context in which the BLUE big box becomes sensible. Students should learn that neutral preferences can be overridden when discourse creates a different constituent or focus structure.

Layer 5 — Real-world density. Move to noun phrases from Science, Mathematics, Humanities, policy and technical writing. Ask students to find the head, protect conventional terms and rewrite any phrase whose attachment becomes ambiguous.

Assessment should not ask only for the memorised order. It should test whether the learner can explain why a phrase is natural, detect when an exception has a reason, punctuate coordinate adjectives, recover the head noun and rewrite an overloaded string.

The final teaching question is:

Which description belongs closest to the noun, and what does the sentence gain by putting it there?

Final checkpoint

Explain why:
