Handwriting matters most when it stops demanding so much attention.

A developing writer needs to turn ideas into visible language while managing spelling, syntax, purpose and revision. Every letter that still requires a fresh motor decision competes with that larger act.

Explicit, frequent and accurate handwriting instruction can reduce that cost. But the target is not ornamental script and not speed for its own sake. It is a transcription system that is readable, comfortable and fluent enough to support real composition.

The governing principle is: teach the movement until the writer can think beyond the movement—then keep handwriting in proportion to the larger job of writing.
