Oral performance is difficult because thinking and speaking happen under time pressure.
Use Think–Ink–Pair–Share to separate preparation from delivery.
Students first formulate a position privately. They jot keywords, not a script. Then they rehearse with a partner. The whole-class share becomes a higher-pressure version after two lower-pressure stages.
Over time, reduce the ink.

Whole-class sharing has a time cost and can create repetition.

The name of the routine should not become a rule that every phase must be identical in every lesson.

These prompts justify the routine because they reward reasoning, not speed.

The first few uses may be clumsy.
Students may talk during think time, write essays during ink, forget turn-taking or assume share means volunteer-only.
Teach the phases explicitly.
Model a good one-sentence ink. Set a timer. Show what balanced partner talk looks like. Explain how public sharing will be selected.
Once the routine becomes procedural memory, its cognitive benefits become cheaper.
Familiar structure frees more attention for the content.
80. The long-term goal is internalised dialogue
Eventually, skilled learners can perform the phases mentally.
They pause, formulate a position, test it against an imagined objection, revise and then speak.
The classroom routine is a scaffold for that internal reasoning architecture.
Students should not need Think–Ink–Pair–Share forever in every context.
Its success appears when they begin protecting their own thinking before social convergence, even without a teacher directing each phase.
