A four-year-old is trying to make a bridge from wooden blocks. The first span collapses. An adult could fix it in five seconds. The adult could also step away in the name of independence and let the child repeat the same failure until frustration wins. There is a third possibility: stay with the problem long enough for both people to think about it together.

Now the conversation is doing more than producing words. Adult and child are jointly examining a problem, making a proposal, testing it, noticing evidence and changing the next move. Neither person is merely talking at the other. Neither person is solving the whole problem alone. The idea itself has become a shared object that can be improved.
Early-years researchers and educators often describe this kind of episode as sustained shared thinking. The Education Endowment Foundation’s current early-years guidance describes it as two or more people working together intellectually to solve a problem, clarify a concept, evaluate an activity or extend a narrative, with all parties contributing and the interaction aimed at developing the child’s thinking. EEF also treats high-quality back-and-forth conversation and scaffolding as central interactional tools in early education. - Keep the idea in motion. Try something, observe what happens, connect it with earlier experience, or consider an alternative.
- Do not take over simply because the adult can solve it faster.
- Do not prolong the episode after the child has left it. Sustained does not mean forced.
- Return to the idea later. A good conversation can become a bridge to a new context.

1. The word “sustained” is about a line of thought, not a stopwatch
A conversation does not become sustained shared thinking because it lasts ten minutes. A long exchange can remain shallow: “What colour? What shape? How many? What is this called?” The child may answer dozens of questions without developing one idea.
A short exchange can be intellectually sustained if each turn depends on the one before it. The child says the puddle disappeared. The adult asks where the water might have gone. The child says the sun drank it. The adult does not simply correct the child; they ask what evidence could show whether water can leave without being drunk. They compare a wet patch in sun and shade. A thread has formed.

2. “Shared” means the child’s contribution genuinely matters

Ask a child what they think will happen before an action, then test it.
“Which object will slide farther?”
“The shiny one.”
“Why?”

Adults can overuse “why” as if it automatically creates reasoning. A child who has no relevant knowledge may respond with silence, guessing or “because it does.”

The child’s story becomes a laboratory for perspective.
15. Comparison is one of the easiest ways to deepen thinking
Place two outcomes side by side.
“This boat floated. This one sank. What is different?”
“This tower lasted longer. What changed?”
“In the story, both children were worried. Did they do the same thing?”
Comparison helps children notice relationships without requiring abstract explanations immediately.
It is especially useful because the adult can select examples that make an important feature easier to see.
16. Contradictions deserve curiosity, not embarrassment

22. Frustration is evidence, but not always evidence to stop

23. Success can also end thinking too early
When the bridge finally stands, adults often say “Well done!” and move on. That misses a powerful moment.
“What made this one work?”
“Would it still work if we made it longer?”
“Can you build another one in a different way?”
Success produces evidence that can be analysed and transferred.
The celebration can remain. It simply does not have to be the end of the idea.
24. Revisit yesterday’s idea
Sustained shared thinking does not need to occur in one uninterrupted episode. A teacher can return the next day: “Yesterday we noticed the ice melted faster near the window. What could we try today?”
Revisiting creates continuity across time and gives memory a purpose.
It also lets the adult see whether the child retained the relation or whether the previous conversation was only locally successful.
25. Transfer the pattern to a new context
If a child learned to compare bridge stability, later ask about chair stability or the base of a tall sandcastle. If they reasoned about a character misunderstanding a friend, revisit perspective in another story.
The new context should preserve the relation while changing surface details.
Transfer is evidence that the child is learning something larger than one conversation.
26. Peers can join, but shared thinking does not automatically appear in a group
Two children can play beside each other without building one idea together. A third can dominate. A confident child can solve everything while others watch.
The adult can support collaborative reasoning by giving each child information or responsibility and by recapping competing ideas neutrally: “Maya thinks the long block should go underneath; Jin thinks two short blocks will be stronger. How could we find out?”

There is a fashionable mistake in which “child-led” becomes “adult intellectually absent.” Young children benefit from adults who know enough about language, mathematics, the natural world and stories to recognise productive directions.
An adult who knows nothing about balance may miss the moment to contrast base width and height. An adult with strong subject knowledge can introduce the right comparison without delivering a lecture.
Expertise helps adults choose the next useful affordance.
28. But adult knowledge should not become premature explanation
Knowing the mechanism creates temptation to reveal it immediately.
“The tower falls because the centre of mass is outside the base of support.” Correct, perhaps, and often educationally mistimed for a four-year-old.
The adult can instead create experiences around balance, wide bases and overhang, then introduce simpler language that matches the child’s conceptual level.
The goal is not withholding truth. It is sequencing access to it.
29. Sensitive language matters when a child’s first explanation is imaginative
“The moon follows our car.”
An adult could laugh or correct sharply. A better response protects curiosity: “It really looks as if it follows us. What makes it seem that way?”

30. The adult should know when to switch from inquiry to explicit teaching

Adults may stage beautiful “thinking conversations” for observation while children learn that certain phrases please adults: “I predict…” “I agree because…”
Useful sentence stems can support participation, but the underlying reasoning matters more than the visible script.

32. Observe who receives the richest conversations

The valuable ingredient is not expensive educational equipment. It is an adult willing to notice the child’s idea and stay with it long enough for the idea to move.
39. Praise the intellectual action, not a fixed identity
Instead of “You’re so clever,” say, “You noticed the two towers were different at the bottom, and that gave us a new test.”
Specific feedback makes the learning process visible: noticing, comparing, trying, revising, explaining.
The child can repeat an action. They cannot directly repeat “being clever.”
40. Independence is the exit condition

A group of children has built three bridges. Two collapse in the middle; one tips sideways. The educator avoids saying, “Use two blocks under the middle.” Instead she asks the children to compare the failures. One child says, “This one needs middle blocks.” Another notices, “This one has middle but falls side.”
The teacher recaps: “So we might have two different problems.” The children test wider base blocks for the tipping bridge and central supports for the sagging bridge. One solution does not fix both.
What changed? The children moved from a single global category—“bridge falls”—to two mechanisms. The adult did not withhold all knowledge; she organised comparison and language so the distinction could become visible.
Worked case 2 — The puddle that vanished
After outdoor play, a child notices that one puddle has disappeared. “The ground ate it.” The adult responds, “It looks as if the water has gone into the ground. But this puddle on the concrete is smaller too. The concrete is hard. Where could that water go?”

The final idea
A skilled adult can finish almost every young child’s problem faster than the child can. That is precisely why the adult’s restraint matters.
The educational opportunity appears in the gap between immediate rescue and unsupported struggle. In that gap, adult and child can look at the same thing, hold an uncertainty in common, offer ideas, test them, revise them and discover that thinking is something people can do together without one person surrendering ownership.
The strongest sustained shared thinking does not sound like an interview. It sounds like two minds genuinely working on one object while one of them is more experienced and responsible for keeping the problem accessible.
Over time, the adult should become less necessary. The child begins to ask the next question, create the comparison, notice the contradiction and propose the new test. Shared thinking has done its job when it helps produce a thinker who can increasingly carry the inquiry forward alone—and then bring something worth sharing back to other people.
