What is Education | Education, Living Heritage and Civilisational Memory — How Learning Keeps Knowledge Alive Across Generations

Cultural heritage education, intangible cultural heritage, living heritage education, traditional knowledge, heritage skills, cultural preservation, intergenerational transmission and community knowledge all describe parts of the same civilisational problem: knowledge can disappear even when books, buildings and digital storage survive. A weaving technique can vanish because nobody learns the sequence of movements. A local ecological practice can disappear because the people who understand a landscape no longer have apprentices. An oral tradition can remain recorded while losing the community able to perform, interpret and adapt it. Education becomes relevant precisely at that fragile boundary between information that can be stored and knowledge that still has living users.

Education therefore does more than preserve information about culture. It can become part of the mechanism through which living heritage remains usable knowledge. Schools, families, craft communities, universities, museums, archives, cultural organisations, language communities and informal apprenticeships participate differently. Their task is not simply to make young people admire the past. It is to help knowledge cross a generational boundary while preserving enough meaning, technique, context and authority that the next generation can genuinely understand what it has received and decide responsibly what to do with it.

That task is unusually visible in current work on education and intangible cultural heritage. UNESCO reported in May 2026 on 200 educational practices across 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that integrate living heritage into formal and non-formal learning. UNESCO also describes intergenerational transmission as central to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The educational question is therefore not whether culture belongs in learning. It is how learning can transmit living knowledge without appropriating it, simplifying it beyond recognition, freezing it into performance, or confusing respectful continuity with compulsory sameness.

Central proposition: civilisational memory survives when knowledge remains transmissible, practised, interpretable and corrigible, not merely stored. A civilisation can possess enormous archives and still lose the ability to perform, understand or renew what those archives describe.

1. Civilisational memory is larger than an archive

An archive is a deliberate store of traces: documents, photographs, recordings, objects, maps, correspondence, datasets and testimony. Civilisational memory includes those traces, but it also includes what people know how to do with them. A recipe card can survive after the sensory judgement needed to cook the dish has disappeared. A musical score can remain after a style of phrasing is no longer heard. A map can survive after the landscape vocabulary that made its names meaningful has faded. Storage preserves evidence; transmission preserves capability.

This distinction matters because modern societies are exceptionally good at producing records. Digital storage can create the impression that loss has been defeated: copy the file, scan the manuscript, record the elder, photograph the object. Yet a recording of a craft is not the craft. It does not feel resistance in the material, correct the novice’s hand, explain why one variation works in humid weather, or decide when inherited practice should change. Living knowledge remains partly embodied in people, relationships and repeated use.

Education is the bridge between evidence and capability. It does not guarantee that every inherited practice will continue, nor should it. It gives learners a fair opportunity to encounter, understand, practise, question and, where legitimate, inherit knowledge with enough depth that continuity or change can be an informed human decision rather than an accidental consequence of forgetting.

2. Heritage is not simply everything old

Age alone does not make something living heritage. Communities inherit countless habits, objects and memories, but only some remain meaningful enough to be recognised, practised or transmitted. Heritage involves selection. People decide, formally or informally, that a practice, expression, place, story, language form, craft, ritual or body of knowledge has significance that reaches beyond one individual life.

That selection can be contested. One generation may value a practice that another experiences as exclusionary. Different groups may remember the same event differently. Official institutions may celebrate a tradition that practitioners themselves consider misrepresented. Education should therefore avoid treating heritage as a sealed box of correct answers. Learners need to see that heritage is both inherited and interpreted, and that claims about ownership, meaning and continuity may require careful attribution.

A strong educational approach asks concrete questions: Who practises this? Who identifies it as important? What knowledge is necessary to understand it? How has it changed? Who is entitled to teach restricted parts? Which parts are public? What evidence supports the historical account? These questions make cultural learning more rigorous, not less respectful.

3. Intangible cultural heritage is knowledge in motion

Intangible cultural heritage includes practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills that communities recognise as part of their heritage. The word intangible can mislead because the practice often depends on tangible things: instruments, tools, costumes, buildings, ingredients, boats, landscapes or manuscripts. What is intangible is the living pattern of knowledge and practice connecting people to those things.

A violin in a museum can be conserved without anyone being able to play its historical repertoire. A fishing boat can be restored without anyone knowing the local currents that shaped its design. A ceremonial object can be catalogued while the social rules governing its use disappear. Preservation of material culture and transmission of living knowledge therefore overlap but are not interchangeable jobs.

Education enters when learners can participate in the knowledge system itself. That may mean practising a technique, interviewing practitioners, studying language, learning the ecology of a place, comparing historical sources, performing under supervision, or documenting a process with community consent. The goal is not to turn every learner into a specialist. It is to create enough meaningful contact that a culture’s knowledge remains intelligible and, for those who choose deeper participation, learnable.

4. Cultural transmission is not copying

Transmission can sound like moving an unchanged file from one person to another. Human learning is never that simple. A learner interprets what is taught through a different body, era, language environment, technology and social world. Teachers select examples, explain reasons, correct errors and adapt pacing. Communities themselves change. Continuity is therefore usually a pattern of constrained variation rather than exact duplication.

This is visible in language, music, food and craft. Pronunciations shift. Instruments change materials. Recipes adapt to available ingredients. Builders use new safety standards. Storytellers respond to new audiences. A tradition can remain recognisable while changing substantially. Education needs to teach both the stable core practitioners consider important and the history of legitimate variation around it.

The opposite errors are fossilisation and dissolution. Fossilisation treats one documented version as the only authentic form and prevents living practitioners from adapting. Dissolution treats every change as equally continuous until the practice loses the features that gave it identity. Good cultural education does not solve that tension through a universal formula. It gives communities and learners evidence, vocabulary and processes for reasoning about change.

5. Tradition can be dynamic without becoming arbitrary

The claim that traditions change is sometimes used to imply that authenticity does not matter. That conclusion goes too far. Practitioners often have clear standards distinguishing skilled from unskilled work, recognised from invented forms, authorised from unauthorised performance, and continuity from imitation. These standards may be debated, but they are not meaningless.

Education can make those standards visible. A craft lesson can identify why grain direction matters, which motifs have social meaning, which materials are substitutes and which changes compromise function. A music lesson can separate improvisation within a style from playing unrelated material and calling it traditional. A language lesson can distinguish dialect variation from errors that arise because a learner has not yet mastered the system.

The useful principle is accountable variation. Learners should know what they are changing, why they are changing it, and who has standing to evaluate that change. This preserves creative agency without pretending that inheritance imposes no obligations to evidence, technique or community meaning.

6. Memory can survive as fact while disappearing as practice

A society may know that a craft existed while no longer knowing how to make it. Historical descriptions might identify ingredients, tools or steps without preserving tacit judgements. Researchers can reconstruct some practices, but reconstruction is not identical to uninterrupted transmission. The difference matters because living lineages contain accumulated corrections that written descriptions often omit.

Education can reduce this gap by documenting process before a knowledge chain becomes critically thin. Documentation should include not only finished products but sequences, failed attempts, environmental conditions, language, decision points and the reasons practitioners give for choices. Video can capture motion; diagrams can capture structure; interviews can capture explanation; apprenticeship can capture correction.

No medium captures everything. The best preservation strategy therefore uses redundancy: people, records, objects and institutions supporting one another. If one carrier fails, others can help reconstruct the practice. Civilisational resilience grows when cultural knowledge is not dependent on one elderly practitioner, one fragile archive or one annual performance.

7. Tacit knowledge is the part a manual struggles to carry

Tacit knowledge is often described as knowledge that is difficult to state completely. A potter feels when clay is too wet. A singer hears when an ornament is stylistically wrong. A farmer recognises soil conditions through texture, smell and accumulated experience. Experts can explain parts of these judgements, but novices usually need repeated exposure before the cues become meaningful.

This is why apprenticeship remains important even in highly literate societies. A manual can reduce uncertainty and standardise basic procedures, yet supervised practice reveals whether the learner can perceive the relevant features in real conditions. The teacher notices mistakes that the learner does not yet know how to notice. Feedback then changes attention, not merely action.

Cultural education should therefore avoid converting every heritage practice into worksheets. Text can prepare learners, provide terminology and preserve explanation. It works best when paired with observation, making, listening, rehearsal, fieldwork or conversation appropriate to the domain. The more embodied the knowledge, the more the curriculum must respect the learning conditions through which expertise actually develops.

8. Civilisations survive through knowledge-reproduction systems

Every civilisation depends on systems that reproduce capability across generations. Children learn language. Apprentices learn trades. Professionals learn standards. Citizens learn institutions. Scientists inherit methods. Communities transmit stories, values and place knowledge. If these reproduction systems fail, physical infrastructure can remain while the competence required to maintain it decays.

Living heritage belongs inside this larger picture. It is not decorative material added after the supposedly serious work of economics, engineering and governance. Traditional ecological knowledge can contain observations about landscapes. Craft traditions can encode material science. Oral history can preserve experiences absent from official archives. Ritual and performance can organise social memory. Their value should not be exaggerated, but neither should it be reduced to entertainment.

The educational job is to determine what kind of knowledge is present and how it should be learned. Some knowledge is historical evidence; some is technical capability; some is artistic practice; some is spiritual or restricted; some is locally useful ecological observation; some is identity-bearing narrative. Treating all heritage as one undifferentiated subject weakens both scholarship and respect.

9. Not every inherited practice should be reproduced

Inheritance does not create immunity from ethical examination. Societies have inherited discriminatory customs, dangerous techniques and practices incompatible with current rights or safety standards. Cultural continuity cannot require schools to reproduce harm merely because a practice has historical depth.

Education can preserve understanding without preserving enactment. Learners can study why a harmful practice emerged, who experienced its consequences, how people challenged it, and what replaced it. Historical knowledge remains valuable even when behavioural continuity is neither desired nor lawful. This distinction allows societies to remember difficult pasts without teaching them as models for repetition.

The same principle applies to obsolete techniques. A hazardous production method may still be taught as history or demonstrated under controlled conditions while current practitioners use safer methods. Transmission can include the story of transformation. Heritage is often most intelligible when learners see not only what persisted but why communities decided to stop, modify or reinterpret particular practices.

10. Education needs a boundary between appreciation and appropriation

Schools often want students to encounter cultures beyond their own. That can widen understanding, but copying a visible form without its context can turn learning into appropriation. The risk rises when a practice is sacred, restricted, commercially valuable or associated with a community that has historically lost control over representation.

A careful curriculum asks whether participation is appropriate, who has given permission, what context learners need, how sources are credited and whether a simulation trivialises the practice. Sometimes the respectful educational activity is observation, study or listening rather than performance. Sometimes community teachers welcome broad participation. The answer depends on the practice and the people with legitimate authority.

This is not an argument for cultural isolation. It is an argument for relational literacy. Learners should understand that access to knowledge exists within social relationships. Respect includes knowing when to ask, when to attribute, when to compensate expertise, when not to reproduce restricted material and when a community’s own educators should lead the lesson.

11. Oral tradition stores more than words

Oral traditions carry narratives, histories, genealogies, humour, moral reasoning, place names and styles of performance. Writing a transcript preserves lexical content but may lose timing, gesture, audience response, melody, emphasis and the conditions under which particular stories are told. Oral knowledge is often an event, not merely a text.

Education can preserve more dimensions by combining transcription with audio or video, performance analysis, language study and contextual notes. Learners can compare versions told by different speakers, examining what remains stable and what changes. That variation is evidence rather than noise. It shows how memory operates socially.

Where stories contain sacred or restricted material, documentation must follow community rules. The technical ability to record does not create an automatic right to publish. A responsible archive can include access restrictions, community-controlled metadata and procedures for future review as expectations change.

12. Storytelling teaches structure as well as memory

A skilled storyteller does not simply recall sentences. They manage sequence, suspense, repetition, character, rhythm, audience knowledge and local conventions. A learner therefore needs practice in structuring attention, not only memorising content. This makes storytelling both a heritage domain and a sophisticated language-learning environment.

Teachers can use oral narrative to develop listening, speaking, inference and perspective while still respecting the story’s cultural ownership. Students might map a narrative structure, compare translations, analyse repeated formulas or reflect on how an audience changes delivery. The academic task should deepen understanding rather than strip the story of its social function.

When learners eventually retell a story, criteria should distinguish faithful transmission from creative adaptation. Both can be valuable, but they are different performances. Labelling the adaptation honestly allows creativity without erasing the source tradition.

13. Language is one of heritage’s deepest carriers

Language does more than name existing concepts. It can encode distinctions, humour, relationships, place histories and categories that become awkward when translated. When a language loses fluent speakers, communities may lose convenient access to parts of their own cultural archive even when translations exist.

Heritage education therefore overlaps with language education. Songs, stories, craft vocabulary, ecological terms and kinship language can give learners reasons to use words beyond exercises. Conversely, heritage teaching in a dominant language can make content accessible while accelerating loss of the language through which the practice historically operated.

Balanced programmes decide which learning goals require the heritage language and which can be supported through translation. Beginners need scaffolding; fluent speakers need domains in which their language remains intellectually and socially useful. Revitalisation becomes stronger when the language is not only a subject but a medium for meaningful activity.

14. Place names are compressed cultural maps

Traditional place names can contain environmental observations, historical events, ownership histories, travel routes, hazards or stories. Replacing or forgetting names can therefore remove layers of local knowledge even when the physical landscape remains visible.

Students can study place names through maps, oral testimony, archival records and field visits. The work teaches geography, language, history and source criticism together. Different names for one place may reveal political change, migration or overlapping cultural geographies rather than a simple problem of choosing the one correct label.

Mapping projects require care because public geolocation can expose sensitive sites. Sacred locations, archaeological remains or vulnerable ecological resources may need coarse location, restricted access or deliberate omission. Education should teach that making knowledge visible can create both value and risk.

15. Craft knowledge joins mind, hand and material

Crafts make tacit knowledge especially visible. Weaving, carving, metalwork, ceramics, boatbuilding, basketry, dyeing and countless other practices depend on material behaviour learned through repeated contact. A novice can know every named step and still fail because pressure, timing, moisture, temperature or alignment is wrong.

Schools can support craft transmission through sustained making rather than one-off decorative activities. Students need enough time to encounter resistance, make errors, receive correction and finish something whose quality can be discussed. The educational value lies partly in discovering that skilled work is not produced by following a list mechanically.

Where traditional craft has commercial value, programmes should consider compensation and attribution. Inviting a master practitioner to provide expertise is not equivalent to asking a volunteer to demonstrate a hobby. Cultural knowledge is labour as well as heritage, and education should model fair relationships with the people who carry it.

16. Apprenticeship carries standards through relationship

Apprenticeship allows learners to move gradually from observation to assisted work and then to independent performance. The teacher controls risk, selects tasks and exposes the learner to variation. This sequence is especially valuable when errors cannot be fully anticipated in a classroom exercise.

Traditional apprenticeship can also reproduce exclusion if access depends on family, gender, caste, clan or informal networks. Educational institutions can widen entry while still respecting community authority. Scholarships, open workshops, documented prerequisites and recognition of community teachers can create new routes without pretending the institution owns the practice.

The challenge is to formalise support without formalising the life out of the apprenticeship. Excessive paperwork can burden small practitioner communities. The useful question is what structure protects learners, teachers and continuity, not how to make every tradition resemble a university course.

17. Music is transmitted through listening before notation is enough

Many musical traditions depend on timbre, tuning, ornament, groove, improvisation or interaction that standard notation only partly represents. Recordings help, but learners often need close listening and imitation before they can hear which differences matter.

Heritage music education can combine ear training, historical context, instrument knowledge and performance. Students should encounter authoritative practitioners where possible, not only simplified school arrangements. A simplified version can be pedagogically useful if it is clearly labelled as an entry point rather than presented as the complete tradition.

Digital tools now allow slow playback, multitrack comparison and remote lessons. These widen access while changing how learning occurs. A recording can be replayed indefinitely, but it cannot judge the learner’s phrasing. Technology therefore complements rather than automatically replaces responsive teaching.

18. Dance carries spatial and social memory

Dance transmits patterns through bodies moving in relation to music, space and other people. Written descriptions struggle to capture weight, timing, posture and interpersonal coordination. Video preserves more, yet camera angle can hide crucial details.

Teaching dance as heritage requires attention to who traditionally performs it, in what setting, with what meanings and whether school performance changes the practice. Some dances are social and open; others are ceremonial or restricted. The same movement can mean something different when removed from its original setting.

Learners benefit from understanding both technique and context. Technique without context risks imitation; context without movement can reduce a living form to a lecture. Where participation is appropriate, education should allow both to remain connected.

19. Food traditions are edible knowledge systems

Food traditions join agriculture, ecology, trade, household organisation, taste, religion, migration and craft. Recipes alone rarely capture the whole system. Ingredient selection, fermentation, heat, texture and timing may depend on sensory judgement passed through demonstration.

Food education can connect heritage to science without claiming that every traditional explanation is scientifically correct. Learners can examine why fermentation works, how preservation reduces spoilage, how climate shapes ingredients, and how migration creates adaptation. Scientific explanation and cultural meaning can coexist as different kinds of questions.

Commercialisation creates another learning problem. A dish may become globally popular while the community that developed it receives little recognition or economic benefit. Heritage education can teach provenance, variation and attribution so popularity does not require historical amnesia.

20. Ecological knowledge can be both local and rigorous

Communities that live closely with landscapes often accumulate observations about seasons, species, weather, soils, water and resource behaviour. Such knowledge may be expressed through stories, calendars, classifications or practices different from academic ecology. Difference of form does not by itself determine reliability.

Education should neither romanticise traditional ecological knowledge nor dismiss it because it was not produced in a laboratory. Claims can be studied through triangulation: compare practitioner observations, long-term records, contemporary measurements and ecological research. Some knowledge will prove highly precise; some may be symbolic; some may require reinterpretation as environments change.

21. Ritual knowledge requires unusually careful educational boundaries

Ritual can integrate language, music, movement, objects, belief, lineage and social authority. Some rituals are publicly shared; others are meaningful precisely because access is limited. A school cannot assume that educational value overrides those restrictions.

Students can learn about a ritual without reenacting it. They can study public descriptions, historical context, material culture and community-approved recordings. Where community leaders invite participation, the lesson can include more direct experience. The appropriate depth should follow consent and meaning rather than the school’s desire for an engaging activity.

This approach also protects learners. Students should not be required to perform religious or identity practices that conflict with their own convictions. Cultural literacy can be compulsory as knowledge while personal participation remains bounded by rights and institutional context.

22. Festivals are temporary classrooms for whole communities

Festivals concentrate performance, food, dress, language, craft and collective memory into recurring events. They can create strong learning opportunities because novices see practices embedded in social life rather than isolated lessons.

Yet festivals can also simplify heritage for visitors. Public programmes often favour visually impressive elements and short explanations. Behind-the-scenes preparation, apprenticeship and local meaning may remain invisible. Education can extend the festival by documenting preparation, interviewing organisers and studying what happens during the rest of the year.

A healthy relationship between schools and festivals therefore goes beyond field trips. Learners can contribute oral histories, exhibitions, research or volunteer work under supervision, creating reciprocal value instead of treating the community as a cultural display arranged for students.

23. Family transmission is powerful but fragile

Families teach language, recipes, stories, values and practical skills through ordinary life. Because the learning is informal, people may not recognise it as education until transmission stops. Migration, work schedules, housing patterns and language shift can reduce opportunities even when families strongly value continuity.

Schools should not assume every family has an elder who can teach. That expectation can disadvantage learners whose families were displaced, assimilated or separated from community knowledge. Programmes can invite family participation without making heritage competence a condition of belonging.

Where families do hold knowledge, educators can create respectful pathways for contribution: interviews, demonstrations, bilingual storytelling or community projects. Consent remains important because a child’s assignment should not pressure relatives to disclose material they regard as private.

24. Elders are knowledge holders, not automatic teaching resources

Older community members may carry rare knowledge, but age alone does not make someone an expert or educator. Institutions should identify relevant practitioners and recognise the difference between lived experience, historical testimony and specialised mastery.

Inviting elders into education requires logistical support. Transport, accessibility, compensation, scheduling, translation and safeguarding matter. A programme that depends on unpaid elder labour can quietly exploit the very people it claims to honour.

Intergenerational encounters work best when learners prepare meaningful questions and have time to reflect afterward. The aim is not ceremonial presence. It is a real exchange in which the knowledge holder can explain, demonstrate, correct and decide what not to share.

25. Children are not empty vessels for culture

Young people receive heritage while already inhabiting contemporary worlds. They bring digital media, new peer cultures, mixed identities and different expectations. Treating them as passive recipients can make heritage feel like an obligation administered by adults.

Education becomes stronger when learners can ask why a practice matters, compare interpretations and create new work with clear attribution. Agency does not require rejecting tradition; it requires understanding enough to participate intelligently. A learner who knows the underlying grammar of a form can innovate more meaningfully than one who copies its surface.

Intergenerational continuity therefore depends partly on making room for youth contribution. A tradition with no legitimate path for novices to become future experts eventually loses practitioners, even if adults insist that young people should value it.

26. Community teachers expand what schools can know

Teachers are trained in pedagogy, but they cannot be expected to hold expert knowledge of every local practice. Community practitioners can provide domain expertise, language and authority that textbooks cannot reproduce.

Partnership requires role clarity. The classroom teacher can prepare learners, connect the experience to curriculum and manage assessment. The practitioner can teach the practice and its context. Co-planning prevents the visitor from becoming an entertaining interruption unrelated to subsequent learning.

Payment, intellectual property and attribution should be agreed before materials are recorded or reused. A school’s educational mission does not automatically transfer ownership of a practitioner’s designs, stories or teaching resources.

27. Museums preserve objects; education reconnects them to practice

Museums can protect material evidence across centuries, but objects removed from use can appear self-explanatory when they are not. Labels identify date and origin; practitioners can explain how an object feels, sounds, moves or participates in social life.

Educational programmes can bring these perspectives together. Students might examine an object, study archival evidence, then meet a practitioner or view contemporary use. The contrast shows that heritage exists across time rather than only in the past tense.

The canonical boundary remains clear: museum systems retain ownership of conservation, collections, provenance and interpretation. This article focuses on the learning pipeline through which museum evidence can support living transmission without claiming that museums themselves are the owners of community practice.

28. Libraries can hold cultural memory without turning it static

Libraries preserve books, recordings, local histories and community archives while providing public access. Their strength is discoverability: knowledge that would otherwise remain scattered can become findable across generations.

Living heritage programmes can use libraries as meeting places for storytelling, language circles, maker workshops and oral-history training. This moves the library from storage alone toward active cultural learning while respecting its role as public knowledge infrastructure.

Digitisation also raises rights questions. A library may have a legal right to hold a recording but not an ethical mandate to place every recording openly online. Metadata can include cultural access protocols so digital discoverability does not erase community expectations.

29. Archives need context as much as preservation

A recording without names, dates, locations, language and permissions can become almost unusable. Future learners need metadata explaining what they are seeing and how the record was produced.

Community archiving can improve description because practitioners recognise meanings outsiders miss. At the same time, archivists contribute standards that improve preservation, version control and retrieval. Collaboration creates a stronger record than either group working alone.

Education can teach archival literacy to young community researchers: file formats, naming conventions, interview practice, consent, transcription and backup. The result is not only a school project but increased local capacity to manage cultural memory.

30. Universities can research heritage without claiming ownership

Universities bring methods from history, anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, ecology, music, education and digital humanities. Research can document endangered knowledge, challenge myths and provide long-term preservation.

Academic incentives can nevertheless extract knowledge. Researchers may publish careers from community material while local participants receive little control or access. Contemporary practice increasingly emphasises partnership, data governance, benefit sharing and return of research outputs in usable forms.

A clear partnership can assign jobs: the school manages safeguarding and curriculum, practitioners carry domain authority, the archive preserves approved records, the museum provides object context, the university evaluates a research question, and the community organisation governs cultural protocols. The exact arrangement will vary, but explicit ownership prevents important work from disappearing between institutions.

This is also a collision-control principle at organisational scale. Collaboration is strongest when institutions connect their distinct capabilities rather than compete to become the sole owner of the whole heritage system.

115. A living-heritage dashboard should be a diagnostic instrument, not a league table

Public agencies may want indicators showing whether transmission programmes are healthy. Useful measures can include numbers of active teachers, advanced learners, teaching sites, language use, apprenticeships, documented materials and age distribution among practitioners. None of these should be converted casually into a single score.

Different traditions have different natural scales. A specialised craft may never need thousands of practitioners. A language may need broad everyday use. A ceremonial role may properly remain restricted. Comparing them through one ranking would confuse visibility with health.

Continuity planning becomes stronger when it protects both material evidence and the social pathways through which that evidence remains meaningful.

118. A transmission stress test asks whether knowledge survives several shocks at once

Consider a practice with three senior teachers, one specialist toolmaker and a small language community. What happens if one teacher retires, the tool material becomes unavailable, young learners move away and the archive’s digital format becomes obsolete within the same decade?
