A realistic image can feel as though the artist simply copied what was there. That appearance of inevitability hides a large number of decisions.

The maker selected a viewpoint, frame, scale, moment, material, edge hierarchy, value structure and degree of detail. Three-dimensional space was translated onto a surface. Moving eyes were converted into a fixed image. Continuous light became finite marks or pixels. Some information was emphasised; most was omitted.

Realism is not the absence of interpretation. It is a highly organised form of representation.

1. Representation

Representation occurs when a work stands for, depicts, models or refers to something beyond its material marks. A drawn tree is graphite on paper and a representation of a tree at the same time.

2. Resemblance

Some representations resemble their subjects strongly; others only weakly. Resemblance is a continuum, not a switch.

3. Realism

Realism can refer broadly to convincing representation, but it also names specific historical movements and attitudes. Context should make clear whether the word describes visual appearance, an artistic aim or nineteenth-century Realism.

4. Naturalism

Naturalism often describes close observation of the visible world and plausible physical relationships. The term overlaps with realism but can carry different historical meanings depending on period and discipline.

5. Photorealism

Photorealism refers to practices that closely engage photographic appearance. It is not simply “very realistic drawing.” The relationship to photography, framing, focus and mediated vision matters.

6. Hyperrealism

Hyperrealist work can intensify detail, scale or surface beyond ordinary viewing experience. Extreme apparent realism may therefore become less like everyday perception and more like an engineered visual encounter.

7. Realism Is Selective

No realistic artwork contains all available information. A portrait omits countless microscopic details. A landscape simplifies leaves, atmospheric particles and shifting light. Selection is unavoidable.

8. Viewpoint

Move the observer and the represented world changes. Viewpoint controls overlap, scale relationships, visible planes and perspective. Realism begins with a situated observer, not a view from nowhere.

9. Framing

The frame determines what enters the representation. What lies outside may be just as important. Realistic depiction can still manipulate meaning through inclusion and exclusion.

10. Perspective

Linear perspective provides one systematic method for translating spatial directions into a flat projection. It can support convincing depth, but it is a constructed model tied to a viewpoint.

11. Perspective Is Not the Only Depth Cue

Overlap, relative size, vertical placement, atmospheric change, texture gradient, value and focus all contribute to depth. A convincing image rarely depends on vanishing points alone.

12. Proportion

Recognisable forms depend on relational measurements. A face can become uncanny when small proportional relationships drift even if every feature is beautifully rendered.

13. Relative Measurement

Artists compare width to height, angle to vertical, feature to feature and interval to interval. Accuracy emerges from networks of relationships rather than isolated measurements.

14. Shape Before Detail

Large shape relationships usually matter more than eyelashes, brick lines or hair strands. Detail placed on incorrect structure creates a detailed error.

15. Value Before Surface

Broad light and dark relationships create volume and hierarchy. Surface texture added before value structure is stable can make a work busy without making it convincing.

16. Light Describes Form

Illumination changes across surfaces according to orientation, material, light source and environment. Realistic shading follows these physical relationships rather than decorating forms with generic gradients.

17. Shadow Is Information

Form shadows describe turning surfaces. Cast shadows reveal spatial relationships between light, blocker and receiving surface. Contact shadows help attach objects to the world.

18. Reflected Light

Surrounding surfaces bounce light into shadow. This prevents real environments from behaving like simple black-and-white diagrams. Reflected light must remain subordinate to direct illumination if the form is to stay coherent.

19. Edge Variation

Real vision does not present every boundary as a uniform outline. Some edges are sharp, some soft and some nearly disappear. Edge hierarchy contributes strongly to naturalistic appearance.

20. Atmospheric Perspective

Distance can reduce contrast and detail and alter colour relationships because light travels through atmosphere. Artists use these tendencies to separate foreground from distance.

21. Texture Gradient

Repeated surface detail appears smaller and denser with distance. Grass, bricks, tiles and crowds can create depth through changing texture scale.

22. Occlusion

When one form overlaps another, the visual system infers depth ordering. Occlusion is among the strongest depth cues because it directly indicates which surface interrupts another.

23. Relative Size

When similar objects appear at different projected sizes, viewers often infer distance. Context determines whether the difference represents depth or actual size variation.

24. Foreshortening

Forms extending toward the viewer project shorter than their world length. Realistic drawing requires accepting these surprising shapes rather than drawing the length the artist knows the object possesses.

25. The Knowledge Trap

Knowing what an object is can interfere with seeing how it appears. A circular plate viewed obliquely is not drawn as a circle. An arm pointing toward the viewer may appear unexpectedly short. Observation must sometimes override object knowledge.

26. Symbolic Substitution

Beginners often replace observed forms with learned symbols: almond-shaped eyes, formula noses, repeated tree shapes. These symbols are efficient for communication but can block accurate observation.

27. Negative Space

Drawing the shapes between objects can reduce symbolic interference. The gap between a chair’s legs has no familiar “chair” symbol, so the artist may copy it more accurately.

28. Likeness

Portrait likeness depends on relationships among features, skull structure, proportions, asymmetries and characteristic shapes. Generic correctness is not enough; the specific person must survive.

29. Portraiture Is More Than Likeness

30. Anatomy

Anatomical knowledge helps artists understand structures beneath visible surfaces. But anatomy should support observation, not replace it. A memorised muscle diagram is not the same as the particular body in front of the artist.

31. Structural Anatomy

For drawing, large masses, joints, landmarks and movement often matter more than memorising every anatomical name. Useful knowledge predicts how form changes with pose.

32. Material Realism

Glass, skin, metal, cloth and wood respond differently to light. Convincing material depiction depends on edge, reflection, texture, transparency and value patterns, not merely local colour.

33. Metal

Polished metal often shows strong, sharp value changes and reflections of its environment. Drawing it as uniformly grey destroys much of its material identity.

34. Glass

Transparent glass is visible through reflections, refraction, edges and distortions of what lies behind it. The artist often draws what glass does to light rather than a solid local colour.

35. Fabric

Fabric realism depends on fold structure, gravity, stiffness, stretch and surface. Different textiles create different fold scales and highlight patterns.

36. Skin

Skin combines form, colour variation, reflectance and subsurface effects. Over-smoothing can make it plastic; excessive texture can destroy large form. Structure remains primary.

37. Hair

Hair reads more convincingly as grouped masses and directional flows before individual strands. Drawing every strand equally creates visual noise.

38. Water

Water can reflect, transmit, refract and distort. Its appearance depends on surface angle, depth, environment and motion. There is no single “water colour.”

39. Realistic Color

Observed colour is relational. A white shirt under warm light may contain yellows, violets, greys and reflected colours. Naming the object “white” does not solve the painting problem.

40. Color Constancy Can Mislead Artists

Human perception tends to stabilise familiar object colours across changing illumination. Artists must learn to inspect actual relationships rather than the corrected colour their perception reports.
