How Photography Works | Causality Ambiguity — A Photograph Can Show Two Things Together Without Showing What Caused What

Cause and effect in photography is the problem of deciding what a still image can actually establish about events, timing, correlation, sequence and mechanism. Search for “photographic evidence,” “cause and effect photos,” “before and after photography,” “documentary photography evidence,” “visual evidence,” or “can a photo prove what happened,” and a crucial distinction appears: a photograph can show that two visible conditions coexisted within an exposure without automatically proving that one caused the other.

A broken window beside a person does not by itself prove that person broke it. Smoke above a building does not reveal the ignition mechanism. A wet street and an umbrella suggest rain, but sprinklers, cleaning or earlier weather remain possible. A before-and-after pair can establish change while leaving the cause of that change unresolved. Photography is excellent at recording visible states. Causal explanation usually requires sequence, mechanism, controls, testimony, metadata or other independent evidence.

This is why photographic evidence, cause and effect, correlation, before-and-after photos, documentary photography, visual evidence, sequence, experiments, scientific photography and image interpretation belong to one mechanism. The disciplined reader separates observation from explanation: first state what the photograph shows; then identify the causal claim; then ask which additional evidence connects the two.

Central proposition: co-occurrence is visible. Causality is a relationship that normally needs evidence beyond one selected projection of one interval.

A still image can show a cracked wall, flooded road or bent branch. It may not reveal which force produced the condition.
