Some cultural terms are best borrowed. Some require a short explanation. Some have a functional target equivalent. Some should remain visibly foreign because that foreignness is part of the source world.
The translator’s responsibility is not to erase difference. It is to prevent unnecessary misunderstanding while preserving the degree of difference the text needs.
This requires humility. A translator should distinguish between what they know, what they infer and what needs verification. Cultural confidence without evidence can create smooth but false translations.

General vocabulary allows flexibility. Terminology often demands control.

For low-stakes gist, speed may dominate.
For public information, education, professional communication and publishing, review becomes more important.

Denotation
The core referential meaning of a word or expression. Denotation is essential but does not capture all connotation or social meaning.
Connotation
Associations, emotional colouring or implied values around a word. Near-synonyms can share denotation while carrying different connotations.
Polysemy
The property of one word having several related senses. Translators must determine which sense is active before choosing a target equivalent.
Homonym
A word that shares form with another word but has a distinct meaning. Context is required to determine which lexical item is intended.
Collocation

Idiom

Metaphor
