1. Read with a purpose

3. Ask questions before reading deeply

Turn headings into questions so the reading has retrieval targets rather than becoming undirected exposure.

4. Pause by meaningful sections

Do not wait until fifty pages later. Stop after a coherent unit and state what it did.

5. Close the book and retrieve

Explain the section without looking. Include the main proposition, supporting ideas and anything still uncertain.

6. Write a memory summary

Summarise from memory first, then reopen the text to correct omissions and distortions.

7. Distinguish main ideas from details

Solve a problem, analyse a new case, write with the concept or compare it with another text. Application strengthens useful access.
