Diagnose the confusion before memorising again

For advanced pairs, definitions are often not enough. A powerful test is to invent a case where Word A is true but Word B is not. If you can do that, the boundary becomes visible.

Case 1 — Accurate, precise, reliable and valid
A digital scale records 52.1 kg, 52.1 kg and 52.2 kg for a 50.0 kg reference mass. The readings are precise because they are tightly grouped and the procedure appears reliable because it produces consistent results. They are not accurate because they are far from the reference. If the scale is intended to measure actual mass, this systematic error also raises a validity problem. One device therefore lets all four terms appear in the same analysis without becoming synonyms.
Case 2 — Effective, efficient, feasible and viable
A tutoring intervention raises average scores by ten points, so it appears effective. It requires twelve hours of individual instruction per student, so it may be inefficient compared with a group method producing similar improvement. A small pilot is feasible because enough tutors are available for one month. National rollout may not be viable if staffing and funding cannot be sustained. These four words map different questions: does it work, how much resource does it use, can it be done, and can it continue?
Case 3 — Data, evidence, proof and support
A survey collects hundreds of responses. Those responses are data. When selected because they bear directly on a claim about transport access, they function as evidence. If the survey design is limited, the evidence may support the claim without amounting to proof. The vocabulary becomes clearer when students ask what role the information plays rather than whether it merely exists.
Case 4 — Correlation, association and causation
Students who sleep longer also tend to score higher on a test. That is an association; if quantified statistically, it may be described as a correlation. The pattern does not establish causation. Students who sleep longer may also have different schedules, health, stress levels or study habits. A causal claim needs a stronger design and mechanism than simple co-variation.
Case 5 — Relevant and representative
Ten interviews with commuters affected by a new station are highly relevant to a question about user experience. They may not be representative of all commuters if participants were volunteers from one neighbourhood. A source can therefore matter directly to the question while still being too narrow for broad generalisation.
Case 6 — Fact, opinion and interpretation
“The law was passed in 2024” is a factual claim that can be checked. “The law was unfair” is an evaluative opinion unless a fairness criterion is defined and argued. “The law marked a shift toward greater regulation” is an interpretation: it may be evidence-based and defensible without being a simple fact. Strong source work distinguishes these categories instead of dividing every sentence into fact or opinion only.
Case 7 — Assumption and inference
A model begins by assuming demand remains constant. That is an assumption placed into the reasoning. After seeing stable demand across several periods, the analyst may infer that demand is unlikely to change sharply in the next short period. The assumption is a starting condition; the inference is a conclusion drawn from evidence.
Case 8 — Model and framework
A transport model predicts how passenger numbers change when fares change. An evaluation framework tells planners to judge proposals using access, cost, emissions and reliability. The model represents a system or relationship. The framework organises how a decision will be analysed. A framework may contain models, but the two words do not perform the same job.
Case 9 — Significant and important
A very small difference in test scores can be statistically significant when a sample is large. That does not automatically make the difference educationally important. Statistical significance answers a technical question about evidence under a model; practical importance asks whether the size of the difference matters in the real world.
Case 10 — Necessary and sufficient
Having four sides is necessary for being a square, because a square cannot exist without four sides. Four sides alone are not sufficient: many quadrilaterals are not squares. Four equal sides plus four right angles are sufficient under the usual definition. This distinction is central to logic, definitions and mathematical reasoning because “required” and “enough” are different relationships.
Case 11 — Summary, paraphrase and synthesis
A paraphrase restates one idea in new wording while preserving meaning. A summary compresses the essential content of a source. A synthesis integrates multiple sources and builds a new relationship among them. A student can paraphrase accurately and summarise concisely yet still fail to synthesize if the sources remain separate.
Case 12 — Coherence and cohesion
A paragraph contains “however”, “therefore”, “moreover” and repeated key vocabulary. These features can create surface cohesion. If the ideas contradict one another without explanation, the paragraph lacks coherence. The strongest editing sequence is therefore reasoning first, linking language second.
Case 13 — Explicit, implicit, literal and figurative
“The corridor was dark” can be a literal description if lighting is poor. “The country entered a dark period” is figurative. If the writer directly states “the character felt isolated,” the meaning is explicit. If isolation is suggested through empty rooms and unanswered messages, it is implicit. Literal/figurative concerns type of meaning; explicit/implicit concerns whether that meaning is directly stated.
Case 14 — Objective and subjective
A thermometer reading is relatively objective because it is generated by an agreed measurement procedure. A pain rating is subjective because it reports personal experience. Subjective does not mean false. If the research question concerns pain, the subjective measure may be directly relevant. The distinction concerns the relationship to personal perspective, not value or seriousness.
Case 15 — Qualitative and quantitative
A survey asks students to rate stress from 1 to 10 and describe why they feel stressed. The ratings produce quantitative data. The written explanations produce qualitative data. Neither automatically outranks the other. The numerical pattern may show which group reports higher stress; the qualitative responses may reveal the mechanisms or experiences behind that pattern.
Case 16 — Ethical, moral and legal
A company may act within the law yet still face ethical criticism under professional or institutional standards. Individuals may also make different moral judgements based on beliefs about right and wrong. Legal permission, ethical acceptability and moral approval can overlap, but none automatically guarantees the others.
Case 17 — Tendency and trend
A long dataset shows a downward trend in energy use over ten years. Within that period, energy demand has a tendency to rise during unusually hot weeks. The trend describes an overall direction over ordered data; the tendency describes an inclination under a recurring condition.
Case 18 — Similar and same
Two methods can be similar in cost and accuracy while using different procedures. Calling them the same erases those differences. Strong comparison answers specify the dimension: same sample size, similar outcome, different measurement method.
Case 19 — Verification and validation
A researcher verifies a calculation by checking it with independent software. The researcher validates a model by testing whether predictions align with real observations under relevant conditions. Verification asks whether this output is correct; validation asks whether the wider method is fit for its intended purpose.
Case 20 — Generalisation and overgeneralisation
A study of 600 randomly sampled students across a region may support a cautious generalisation to that population if sampling and response quality are strong. Extending the conclusion to all teenagers worldwide would be an overgeneralisation. The difference is not “general statements are bad”; it is whether scope matches evidence.

However, if the intervention requires ten tutor-hours for every student, a small-group alternative might achieve a similar effect with fewer resources. The programme may also be feasible as a short pilot while lacking long-term viability because staffing cannot be sustained. Evaluation should therefore distinguish whether the programme works, whether it uses resources well, whether it can be implemented now, and whether it can continue over time. Collapsing these four questions into the single word “good” hides the trade-offs that decision-makers actually need to understand.
The paragraph works because each near-synonym controls a separate evaluative dimension. This is the larger purpose of commonly confused vocabulary: precision creates better reasoning.

A stronger causal conclusion would require a design capable of ruling out plausible alternative explanations.
Model paragraph — source use and synthesis
A summary of Source A shows that cost is a major barrier to participation, while a summary of Source B highlights travel time. These summaries become a synthesis only when their relationship is analysed. Source C provides that bridge by showing that participation is lowest among students facing both high cost and long journeys. Taken together, the sources suggest that barriers may interact: a moderate fare can become more burdensome when the journey is also long and inconvenient. The combined explanation is not stated by any single source; it emerges from integrating them.

For advanced academic distinctions, add a sixth test: create a case where A is true but B is false. Precise but inaccurate. Reliable but invalid. Effective but inefficient. Possible but improbable. Relevant but unrepresentative. Cohesive but incoherent. Necessary but insufficient.
If the student can create those counterexamples, the boundary is no longer a memorised definition. It has become usable knowledge.
