Metaphor and metonymy are two of the most important mechanisms by which vocabulary extends meaning. Metaphor creates or interprets one domain through perceived similarity or structural analogy: a branch of government is understood through the branching structure of a tree; a computer virus through biological infection; a warm welcome through bodily temperature and social affection. Metonymy works through association rather than similarity: The White House announced… uses a place for an institution; read Shakespeare uses an author for works; the kettle is boiling can use a container for its contents. Search questions such as “What is metaphor?”, “What is metonymy?”, “What is the difference between metaphor and metonymy?”, “How do words get figurative meanings?”, and “How does metaphor create new vocabulary meanings?” all point to the same lexical fact: meaning routinely extends beyond literal reference through structured conceptual relations.

Metaphor and metonymy are not only literary devices. They are ordinary mechanisms of lexical meaning, polysemy, technical terminology, semantic change and everyday communication. Words such as head, foot, root, branch, window, cloud, platform, field, channel, stream, thread, heart and virus all demonstrate conventional extensions that speakers usually process without consciously constructing a poetic image. In many cases, a once-innovative figurative use becomes so familiar that it feels like a normal dictionary sense.

The 60-Second Answer: Metaphor vs Metonymy

Metaphor understands one thing in terms of another because of perceived similarity, analogy or shared structure. A branch of science is not a tree branch, but both are subdivisions growing from a larger structure. A cold response is not low in physical temperature, but physical coldness provides a model for emotional distance.

Metonymy uses one entity to refer to another because the two are associated within the same broader situation or conceptual domain. The Crown can refer to monarchical authority; Hollywood to the film industry; drink a glass in context can mean drink the contents of the glass. The relation is not similarity: it is contiguity, association, part–whole structure, producer–product relation, place–institution relation or another established connection.

Both mechanisms can create temporary interpretations, conventional expressions or permanent lexical senses. The crucial question for vocabulary is not whether an expression sounds figurative, but whether the extension has become conventional enough to function as ordinary word knowledge.

Part I — Literal, Figurative and Conventional Meaning

1. Literal meaning

A literal use fits the established concrete or direct sense without requiring cross-domain mapping or associated-reference shift.

2. Novel metaphor

A writer creates a fresh comparison whose interpretation depends heavily on the local context.

3. Conventional metaphor

A metaphorical extension has become common enough that speakers access it rapidly: grasp an idea, warm person, branch of knowledge.

4. Lexicalised metonymy

An association-based use becomes conventional enough to appear as an ordinary sense or established construction.

5. Dead metaphor?

The label “dead metaphor” is often used for highly conventional metaphors, but the underlying conceptual relation can still influence extensions, collocations or comprehension. It is usually more informative to describe degree of conventionality than to declare a metaphor simply alive or dead.

Part II — The Core Difference

6. Metaphor maps across domains

A source domain supplies structure for a target domain: journeys structure discussion of life and goals; heat structures emotion; verticality structures status and quantity.

Synecdoche traditionally refers to part–whole relations such as all hands for sailors or wheels for a car. Many modern linguistic treatments regard synecdoche as a subtype or closely related form of metonymy because the relation is association within one conceptual frame rather than cross-domain similarity.

33. Why the label matters less than the relation

Metonymy often preserves much of the lexical meaning of the expression while redirecting reference. The White House still evokes the place, but discourse targets the administration.

The exact boundary between metaphor and metonymy is not always universally agreed. Some expressions involve layered mechanisms or can receive competing theoretical analyses. For teaching, the similarity-versus-association distinction is a strong first model, but advanced learners should be prepared to justify their analysis rather than assume every case has one uncontested label.

The same word can be literal in one sentence and metaphorical or metonymic in another. Classification belongs to a use in context, not permanently to the spelling. Many technical senses are so conventional that speakers may no longer experience them as figurative. That does not erase their semantic motivation. For vocabulary learning, the historical or conceptual link can remain useful even when everyday processing is automatic.

Some cases are genuinely layered. Institutional metonymy can combine with personification; a metonymically selected actor can participate in a larger metaphorical frame. The strongest analysis identifies each relation instead of forcing the sentence into one box.
