Selectional restrictions and selectional preferences describe the semantic expectations words place on the other words they combine with. A verb such as drink normally takes something drinkable as its object; diagonalise in mathematics expects a matrix or related mathematical object; persuade usually expects an animate or person-like participant capable of changing a decision. Search questions such as “What are selectional restrictions?”, “What is semantic compatibility?”, “Why does a sentence sound semantically wrong even when the grammar is correct?”, “What are selectional preferences?”, and “Why do verbs prefer certain nouns?” all point toward the same lexical-semantic problem: grammar can permit a structure while word meaning makes some combinations natural, strange, metaphorical or impossible under the ordinary interpretation.
Selectional preferences are usually better treated as soft expectations rather than absolute rules. English can say eat lunch, eat glass, eat your words and even the spreadsheet ate my afternoon in figurative language. The first is ordinary, the second unusual but physically possible, the third idiomatic and the fourth metaphorical. Modern lexical-semantics and computational accounts therefore often model predicate–argument compatibility probabilistically or as graded semantic preference rather than as a simple grammatical ban. A combination can violate the usual preference and still be interpretable because context, coercion, metaphor, domain knowledge or pragmatic imagination repairs the mismatch.

The 60-Second Answer
A selectional restriction is a traditional way of stating that a predicate expects arguments with certain semantic properties. Drink prefers a liquid or drinkable substance; murder normally requires a living victim; pregnant applies only to organisms of an appropriate biological type under literal interpretation. Modern accounts often replace strict restrictions with selectional preferences because language regularly stretches or violates ordinary expectations.
Semantic compatibility is therefore graded. She drank water is highly compatible. She drank medicine is compatible but less prototypical. She drank sunlight is anomalous literally but interpretable poetically. Strong vocabulary knowledge includes knowing these normal compatibility patterns and recognising when a writer is deliberately breaking them.
Part I — Why Grammar Is Not Enough
1. Grammatical but semantically strange
The rock persuaded the teacher. The sentence has an ordinary subject–verb–object structure, yet literal interpretation is odd because rocks do not normally possess communicative agency.
2. Ungrammatical and semantically odd are different problems
Teacher the persuaded rock breaks English syntax. The rock persuaded the teacher is syntactically well formed but semantically unusual. Vocabulary instruction should help learners distinguish these failure types.
3. Lexical meaning helps compose sentence meaning
Words contribute more than dictionary definitions. Predicates bring expectations about participants, event types, instruments, results and states. Those expectations guide real-time comprehension.
Part II — From Restrictions to Preferences
4. Early strict-feature models
Classic accounts represented selectional restrictions as semantic features: eat might require a [+EDIBLE] object or sleep a [+ANIMATE] subject under literal use.
5. Why strict rules fail
People eat glass in extraordinary performances, computers can sleep, markets can digest news, and writers constantly produce metaphor. Real language uses categories flexibly.
6. Modern preference view
Selectional preferences describe typical compatibility rather than absolute possibility. Corpus and computational approaches estimate which semantic classes commonly fill a predicate’s roles.
Part III — Participant Roles
7. Agent
The participant that intentionally or causally initiates an action in many event descriptions: The chef cut the bread.
8. Experiencer
The participant that perceives, feels or undergoes a mental state: Maya feared the storm.
9. Theme or patient
The entity moved, affected or described by the predicate: She lifted the box.
10. Instrument
The means used in an action: He cut the rope with a knife. A knife is more compatible as a cutting instrument than milk under ordinary interpretation.
11. Location, source, goal and path
Motion and placement verbs constrain spatial roles differently: put strongly expects a location complement, while arrive encodes a goal-like endpoint.
Part IV — Compatibility Is Sense-Specific
Polysemous words change their selectional behaviour by sense. Run in run a race, run a company, run software and run water selects different participant types. Selectional knowledge therefore belongs to word-sense knowledge, not merely the spelling run.

The most important modern shift is from rigid “restrictions” to graded “preferences.” Eat glass is unusual but possible; eat your words is idiomatic; the market ate the losses is metaphorical. Language stretches because people stretch semantic frames.
The practical sequence is predicate → participant types → ordinary fit → sense/domain check → contextual repair → interpretation. For writers, reverse it: decide the event and participant types first, then choose a predicate that naturally fits them.
