The paraphrase ladder: from word-level change to concept-level reconstruction

Level 1: lexical substitution

The danger is over-compression: a shorter phrase may become too broad or remove a necessary distinction.

Suppose a source says residents complained about noise at night, litter in common areas and blocked pathways. Depending on the task, these details might be compressed as “residents raised concerns about disturbances and misuse of shared spaces.” That phrase is shorter but still needs to preserve the relevant scope. “Residents opposed the development” would be too broad if the source only reports specific concerns.

Summary vocabulary therefore requires category knowledge, accurate superordinate terms, relational language and disciplined paraphrase. It is not primarily a test of rare synonyms.

Compression should be reversible enough that the reader can recognise the source idea. If the category is too broad, nuance disappears. If it is too narrow, some details no longer fit. Students should test category words against every item they are supposed to include.

Superordinates: vocabulary that groups details

A superordinate is a broader category term: vehicle can group car, bus and lorry; emotion can group anger, fear and relief; resource may group particular materials or assets depending on context. Summary writing often depends on selecting a superordinate that is broad enough to compress but specific enough to preserve relevance.

Students can practise with category ladders: golden retriever → dog → animal → living thing. Each step is broader. In a summary, “living thing” may be so broad that it loses the point. The best category sits at the level demanded by the passage and question.

This skill also improves reading because the learner begins to recognise how examples and categories structure paragraphs.

Hyponyms and specificity: when detail matters

If superordinates compress upward, hyponyms move downward into more specific members of a category. Comprehension sometimes depends on specificity. A passage may distinguish vehicle from bicycle or emotion from resentment. A paraphrase that replaces a specific word with an overly broad category can erase important information.

Teach students to ask, “How much specificity does this answer require?” If the question asks what particular feeling the speaker shows, “negative emotion” is too broad. Paraphrasing cause without changing causal strength

Causal language exists on a spectrum. Caused makes a strong causal claim. Contributed to allows other factors. Was associated with may describe a relationship without establishing cause. May have influenced adds uncertainty. A paraphrase that replaces these freely can misrepresent evidence.

Words such as initially, previously, subsequently, meanwhile, eventually organise events. Removing them can change cause or chronology. If a policy was introduced after complaints increased, a paraphrase must not imply the policy came first.

Summary writers often compress several sentences into one. When doing so, preserve temporal relationships explicitly if they matter to the task: “After complaints increased, the council introduced…”; “While repairs continued, residents were relocated.”

Paraphrasing concession and contrast

Concession acknowledges one point while maintaining another: although, despite, even though, admittedly, nevertheless. Contrast simply highlights difference. Students who replace concession with basic contrast can lose the argumentative structure.

Source: “Although the scheme reduced traffic, residents remained concerned about cost.” This is not equivalent to “The scheme reduced traffic and residents were concerned about cost.” The first sentence frames the concern as persisting despite a benefit. The relation is part of meaning.

Comprehension answers should preserve this architecture when it is relevant.

Paraphrasing modality and obligation

Modal verbs and phrases encode possibility, ability, permission, recommendation and obligation: can, could, may, might, should, must, is required to, is permitted to. Replacing should with must changes recommendation into obligation. Replacing may with can can change probability into ability or possibility depending on context.

Secondary 2 students should treat modals as load-bearing meaning, especially in informational texts, rules, arguments and summaries. Circle them before paraphrasing if necessary.

Accuracy often depends more on preserving one modal than on changing five content words.

Synonyms: use them as contrasts, not automatic replacements

A synonym list is useful for generating possibilities, but a paraphrase needs context fit. Large, substantial, considerable and significant overlap without being identical. Concern, fear and anxiety overlap but differ in emotional structure. Reject, dismiss and decline carry different patterns and tones.

Before substituting, check meaning, intensity, collocation, grammar and register. Sometimes the original word is the most accurate choice and does not need replacement, especially for technical terms or unavoidable key concepts.

Paraphrase quality is measured by meaningful reconstruction, not percentage of words changed.

Antonyms and negation as paraphrase tools

Sometimes meaning can be rebuilt through an antonym plus negation: “unlikely” → “not likely”, “insufficient” → “not enough”. This can be useful, but students must watch strength and naturalness. “Not happy” is broader and weaker than “miserable”; “not impossible” does not mean “likely”.

Negation also changes scope. “Not all students agreed” means at least some did not agree, not “all students disagreed”. These distinctions are common sources of comprehension error.

Use antonym transformations as exercises in logic, not merely vocabulary variety.

Nominalisation: compression with risks

Nominalisation turns processes or qualities into nouns: decide → decision, expand → expansion, fail → failure, reliable → reliability. Academic texts use nominalisation to compress and connect ideas. Summary writers can also use it: “because the population expanded rapidly” → “because of rapid population growth”.

But excessive nominalisation can make writing dense. “The implementation of the reduction of…” may be less clear than an active verb. The goal is flexible control: recognise nominalisations in reading, unpack them when necessary, and use them when they genuinely compress meaning.

Morphology therefore supports both comprehension and paraphrase.

Active/passive transformation

Changing voice can help paraphrase without changing content: “Researchers conducted the survey” ↔ “The survey was conducted by researchers.” But voice affects information emphasis. Passive construction may foreground the process/result or omit the agent. If the agent matters, deleting it changes the information.

Students should use voice change as one tool among many, not a mechanical recipe. Good paraphrase rebuilds the sentence around the meaning priorities of the task.

In summary writing, passive voice can sometimes compress an unimportant agent, but only when omission is semantically safe.

Question vocabulary: understand the task before answering the passage

Secondary 2 comprehension performance can fail at the question rather than the passage. Command words define the operation. Question vocabulary should become automatic enough that working memory can focus on the passage. A two-minute command-word warm-up can therefore improve comprehension performance without teaching a single new content word.

Answer-scope vocabulary: preserve the size of the claim

Words such as mainly, partly, primarily, occasionally, increasingly, generally, specifically, at least, no more than define scope. They can appear in both question and source. Secondary 2 readers should treat them as semantic boundaries. “What is the main reason?” does not ask for every reason. “How does the writer partly agree?” requires recognising mixed stance rather than full agreement.

When paraphrasing answers, scope words may be changed only to equivalents that preserve the boundary. “Primarily” can sometimes become “mainly”; “occasionally” can become “from time to time”. But “occasionally” cannot become “often” without changing frequency.

Scope errors are especially dangerous because the resulting sentence remains grammatical and plausible. Careful checking is required.

Evidence vocabulary: words that show support relationships

Comprehension passages often use verbs that encode how evidence relates to a claim: shows, suggests, indicates, demonstrates, supports, contradicts, confirms, implies, illustrates. These are not decorative. A passage saying data “suggests” a trend is less committal than one saying data “demonstrates” it. A summary should preserve that strength.

Teach students to build an evidence ladder from cautious to strong, while acknowledging that context determines exact force. May indicate is cautious; supports shows compatibility; demonstrates is stronger; proves is often inappropriate unless the evidence genuinely establishes the claim. Students should not memorise labels without evidence. Give a tone word only after pointing to language that makes the attitude plausible. If two labels seem possible, compare their boundaries. Concerned is not automatically pessimistic; one can be concerned while still expecting improvement.

Pronouns, demonstratives and substitution: the hidden vocabulary of cohesion

Words such as this, that, these, those, one, ones, such, former, latter carry little content alone but keep texts cohesive. “This caused further delays” requires the reader to identify the event referred to by this. “The former was cheaper, but the latter was more reliable” requires tracking two previous alternatives.

In summary and paraphrase, unclear references become dangerous because the writer may compress away the noun the pronoun depends on. Rebuild reference explicitly when necessary. “This led to…” may need “The shortage led to…” in a standalone summary sentence.

Cohesion vocabulary is therefore part of accurate re-expression, not merely grammar.

Lexical chains: how repeated meaning holds a paragraph together

Writers often avoid repeating one exact word by using synonyms, superordinates, pronouns and related terms. A reader who misses however may fail to see the change in stance. A reader who interprets dismissed only as “sent away from work” activates the wrong sense.

Possible inference: the inspections caused officials to take the complaints more seriously. Evidence: initial dismissal contrasts with later caution and restriction after inspection results. Tone toward the officials may be neutral or mildly critical depending on wider passage; one sentence alone may not justify a strong label such as “condemning”. This illustrates why vocabulary and evidence calibration work together.

Model paraphrases of the mini-passage

Source point: officials first treated the complaints as exaggerated, then changed position after independent inspections found continuing excessive noise.

Accurate paraphrase: “Officials became more cautious after independent checks confirmed that high noise levels were continuing, even though they had initially regarded residents’ complaints as overstated.” The chronology, contrast, cause and stance remain.

Too strong: “Inspections proved that the council had ignored genuine complaints.” “Proved” and “ignored” introduce stronger accusations than the source necessarily supports. Too vague: “The council changed its mind because of new information.” This preserves a skeleton but loses the nature of the evidence and issue if those details are relevant to the task.

Paraphrase quality depends on the requested level of detail. In a summary, the vague version may be insufficient; in a broader overview, some compression may be acceptable. Task purpose governs vocabulary choice.

A model summary of the mini-passage

A concise summary point could be: “Independent inspections showing persistent excessive noise led the council to reconsider residents’ complaints and impose a temporary late-night restriction.” This combines chronology and cause while removing secondary phrasing.

Notice that “reconsider” compresses the shift from dismissal to caution, while “persistent excessive noise” preserves the inspection finding. “Temporary” remains because duration limits scope. If the task asks only why the council imposed restrictions, the initial dismissal may be omitted. Summary vocabulary is always tied to the question.

Students should therefore decide what information is relevant before they paraphrase individual sentences.

Reference map: This = new device-loan scheme; some = some families; the latter issue = maintenance costs, not device access. A student who attaches “latter” to the wrong noun may misunderstand what the repair fund solves.

Reference chains are especially important in summary because copied pronouns may no longer have clear antecedents after sentences are removed.

Passage lab 4: multiple meaning and subject context

The first current is electrical flow; the second means present/existing. The same written form carries two senses within two sentences. Students relying on a one-definition vocabulary may confuse them despite high familiarity with the word.

Paraphrase: “Reducing resistance increased electrical current, although the device’s present design still restricts safe power delivery.” The paraphrase makes the two senses explicit through different wording.

Faithful summary: “Electric buses have higher initial purchase costs but avoid tailpipe emissions and some fuel-related maintenance, whereas diesel buses are cheaper upfront but produce local exhaust.” Scope and trade-off remain.

Comparison vocabulary should preserve dimensions: purchase cost is not total lifetime cost, and “no tailpipe emissions” is not “no environmental impact”.

Passage lab 6: sequence and consequence

Sequence markers—at first, subsequent, instead, eventually—organise the diagnostic process. So links test result to changed action. A summary should not imply the loose connection was suspected from the beginning.

Summary: “After tests ruled out a faulty sensor, the engineers investigated the wiring and eventually found a loose power-supply connection.” “Ruled out” compresses the reasoning accurately.

Sequence vocabulary is often central to procedural and scientific comprehension.

An evaluation can distinguish relevant from sufficient. The resident’s view is relevant evidence about use but insufficient to support a broad claim about everyone. Evaluative answer: “The conclusion is weakly supported because it relies on one resident’s view and omits usage data and perspectives from other groups.” Vocabulary enables a criterion-based judgement instead of “not convincing”.

Passage lab 8: figurative language and tone

Patchwork and stitched together form a textile metaphor. Literally, the proposal is not fabric. 1. Identify only points relevant to the task

Before changing vocabulary, decide what information belongs. A summary cannot be accurate if irrelevant details are beautifully paraphrased. Underline or note the source points that answer the question, not every interesting sentence. Vocabulary work begins after relevance selection.

2. Group overlapping information

Look for repeated ideas, examples that belong to one category, several causes of the same type, or multiple consequences that can be represented under a precise superordinate. Grouping reduces word count at the idea level before sentence-level compression begins.

Grammatical transformation works best when students can explain what stayed constant. Changing noun to verb, active to passive, clause to phrase or information order should not alter agency, time, cause or emphasis accidentally.

When not to paraphrase a technical term

Some vocabulary should remain because it names a precise concept. Replacing photosynthesis with “how plants make food” may help explanation but is not always an equivalent technical paraphrase. Replacing evaporation with “water disappearing” is inaccurate. Replacing gradient with “steepness” may be acceptable in some explanatory contexts but not where the mathematical quantity is required.

Students need permission to retain key technical nouns while changing surrounding language. “Own words” does not mean every single word must be different. Assessment should reward semantic accuracy over forced substitution.

The same principle applies to proper names, specialised labels and terms central to the source’s argument.

When repetition is better than a bad synonym

Writers sometimes avoid repeating a key word at all costs. This can damage cohesion. If a passage is about evidence, replacing it successively with proof, facts, information, data may change meaning. Repetition of a precise term is often clearer than variation for variation’s sake.

Teach students to distinguish stylistic repetition from necessary terminological consistency. A key concept may need stable naming, while surrounding verbs and sentence structures can vary.

This also helps summaries remain coherent when several source paragraphs use different surface terms for one central idea.

Summary points should be independent enough to combine

A strong summary point can stand as a clear proposition: subject + action/relationship + necessary qualification. Fragments copied from the source often remain dependent on surrounding context. Before combining points, students should rewrite them into complete meaning units.

Example fragment: “because of the lack of staff”. Independent point: “Staff shortages delayed the service.” Another point: “Equipment failures caused further disruption.” These can then be combined if task-relevant: “Staff shortages and equipment failures disrupted the service.”

Vocabulary compression becomes easier once points are rewritten as propositions rather than copied chunks.

Combining summary points without creating false causality

Two source points can often share a sentence, but conjunction changes relationships. “Costs rose. Participation fell.” Joining them as “Costs rose, so participation fell” invents causality unless the source supports it. Safe combination might be “Costs rose while participation fell” if simultaneity is accurate, or simply “Costs rose and participation fell.”

Connectors are semantic operators. Every therefore, because, although, whereas adds a relationship. Summary writers should use them only when that relation is present in the source.

This is one reason relationship vocabulary deserves the same attention as content vocabulary.

Avoiding duplication in summaries

Two source sentences may express the same underlying point with different examples. Students who paraphrase sentence by sentence often repeat the idea twice. Group before writing. Ask, “What single claim do these details support?”

If one paragraph says the scheme saved travel time and another says commuters reached destinations faster, these may overlap. Depending on context, one point such as “the scheme reduced travel time” may cover both.

Compression at idea level is more powerful than shaving words from duplicated sentences after they have already been written.

Avoiding unsupported generalisation

Summary compression tempts students toward broad category words. “Three students forgot their materials” should not become “students were unprepared” if the class has thirty students. “Two parks lacked shade” should not become “parks lacked shade”. The category must preserve the sample or scope.

A useful check is to ask: if someone read only my summary, would they believe a larger group was affected than the source states? If yes, restore a quantifier such as some, several, a minority.

This is a vocabulary-and-logic skill, not only a writing style issue.

Avoiding unsupported evaluation

A summary usually reports source content rather than adding personal judgement. Words such as excellent, unfair, irresponsible, ridiculous may inject evaluation that the source did not contain. Even apparently academic labels such as biased or ineffective need evidence.

When the source itself evaluates, attribute or preserve the stance accurately: “The writer criticises the policy as unfair” is different from the student declaring “The policy is unfair.” Reporting verbs help maintain distance.

Paraphrase should not quietly turn interpretation into fact.

Avoiding pronoun ambiguity after compression

When several source sentences are combined, pronouns can lose their antecedents. “They introduced it after complaints increased” may be clear in the original paragraph but ambiguous in a standalone summary. Replace pronouns with concise nouns where needed: “The council introduced the restriction after complaints increased.”

Clarity can require slight repetition. Saving two words is not worthwhile if the reader no longer knows who acted.

Reference chains should be rebuilt, not copied blindly.

The checklist can be shortened as students become more independent. Its purpose is to externalise the semantic checks until they become habits.

Comprehension answer vocabulary: move from evidence to explanation

A common weak answer copies evidence but does not explain it. Another gives an interpretation but no evidence. Vocabulary can bridge the two. Frames such as this suggests that, this indicates, the contrast highlights, the word implies, the repeated reference emphasises connect textual detail to inferred meaning. These frames should not become empty templates; the student must choose a verb that matches evidential strength.

Example: Evidence: “She checked the locked door twice before leaving.” Weak answer: “She checked the door twice.” Better inferential answer: “Her repeated checking suggests that she was anxious about whether the door was secure.” The verb suggests appropriately marks inference rather than fact.

Students should practise a three-part answer when appropriate: evidence → reasoning verb → interpretation. Over time, the structure becomes flexible rather than formulaic.

Vocabulary for explaining writer effect

Questions about effect require language that links choice to reader meaning: emphasises, reinforces, contrasts, foregrounds, exaggerates, evokes, creates an impression, conveys, highlights, undermines, distances, humanises. These verbs differ. “Emphasises” increases prominence; “contrasts” sets differences against each other; “evokes” brings an image or feeling to mind; “undermines” weakens credibility or authority.

A useful teaching move is to ban “shows” temporarily and ask students to select a more exact analytical verb. Then require justification. “Why emphasises rather than suggests?” The goal is not variety for its own sake but a closer match between word and analytical relationship.

This vocabulary also transfers into literary analysis and upper-secondary writing.

Vocabulary for comparing viewpoints

When two speakers or texts are compared, students need language for degree and dimension: similarly, both, unlike, whereas, in contrast, to a greater extent, more cautious, less critical, broadly agrees, partly accepts, fundamentally rejects. Good comparison identifies what the viewpoints are about and how they differ, not merely that one is “positive” and another “negative”.

Example: “Both writers accept that the scheme reduces traffic, but Writer A considers the cost justified whereas Writer B regards it as excessive.” The sentence preserves a shared proposition and one evaluative difference. Vocabulary makes the comparison compact.

Comparison frames are especially useful before summary synthesis, where several sources or viewpoints may need to be compressed.

Vocabulary for writer purpose

Purpose verbs include inform, explain, persuade, warn, reassure, criticise, challenge, entertain, encourage, discourage, justify, defend, question, advocate. These are more precise than “tell the reader”. A passage can also combine purposes: inform about a problem while persuading readers to support a solution.

Students should derive purpose from language choices and structure. Repeated imperatives may encourage action; alarming statistics may warn; balanced presentation of evidence may inform or evaluate. Purpose words should be evidence-backed, not topic guesses.

Paraphrasing purpose requires preserving rhetorical direction. “The writer explains the policy” is not equivalent to “the writer defends the policy.”

Vocabulary for credibility and reliability

Credibility questions often require distinctions among reliable, credible, authoritative, biased, representative, verifiable, current, relevant, sufficient. A source can be authoritative yet outdated. A survey can be current yet unrepresentative. Evidence can be relevant but insufficient. These distinctions allow students to evaluate sources without collapsing everything into “trustworthy” or “not trustworthy”.

Ask students to name the criterion explicitly: expertise, evidence, sample, recency, corroboration, conflict of interest, transparency. Then choose vocabulary that matches the criterion. “The source is unreliable” should not be accepted as a free-floating label without explanation.

This improves evaluative comprehension and media literacy together.

Vocabulary for bias and perspective

Perspective refers to a viewpoint shaped by position, experience or interests. Bias involves a tendency or preference that may influence representation or judgement. Every perspective is not automatically biased, and identifying bias requires evidence. This distinction matters when reading opinion, news, historical sources and persuasive texts.

Students can use language such as frames the issue as, emphasises, overlooks, gives greater weight to, presents favourably, presents negatively, acknowledges, omits. These verbs describe textual behaviour more precisely than simply announcing “the writer is biased”.

A careful comprehension answer often says what the text does before evaluating why.

Choosing the first listed definition can be dangerous because dictionary senses are ordered by editorial convention, not by relevance to the current passage.

Teach students to read example sentences and usage labels. If a word is marked formal, technical, disapproving or literary, that information may affect tone. Grammatical patterns and collocations can also clarify which sense is active.

During timed examination conditions, dictionary access may not exist. The classroom purpose of dictionary training is therefore partly to improve internal sense-selection habits for when reference tools are unavailable.

Thesaurus use during paraphrase

A thesaurus should generate candidates, not decide. Suppose the source uses concerned. A thesaurus may suggest worried, anxious, troubled, involved. “Involved” is a completely different sense of concerned. Even “anxious” may be stronger than the source. The student must verify meaning and context before substitution.

A safe routine is: understand source meaning → generate candidate → verify in dictionary/examples → test grammar/collocation → compare strength/register → use only if fidelity remains. Often the best paraphrase changes sentence structure and keeps the original key word.

Students who rely on thesaurus-first paraphrasing tend to produce lexical variety with semantic instability. Meaning-first reverses the priority.

Vocabulary notebooks for comprehension, not just lists

A comprehension-oriented vocabulary notebook should record the word in the sentence where it mattered. Add the contextual sense, the clue that helped, one related meaning if useful, and a short note about why the word was load-bearing. This turns each entry into a reading lesson.

For paraphrase, add a safe alternative phrase only if it genuinely matches. For summary, add a category or superordinate. For tone, add connotation. Not every entry needs every field; record what solved the actual reading problem.

Morphology helps unpack dense academic words

Words such as unpredictability, reconsideration, misinterpretation, unsustainable become less opaque when students see bases and affixes. mis- + interpret + -ation points toward the noun “an incorrect interpretation”. This does not guarantee the exact contextual meaning, but it provides a strong hypothesis.

Morphology also helps paraphrase by allowing word-class shifts: interpret → interpretation; decide → decision; efficient → efficiency. Students can restructure a sentence without reaching for unrelated synonyms.

The rule remains: morphology supplies evidence, context confirms meaning.

Collocation helps choose safe paraphrases

If two words are near-synonyms, collocation may decide which belongs. We say strong evidence, heavy rain, make a decision, reach a conclusion. A paraphrase that replaces one word without checking its partners can become unnatural even when broad meaning is correct.

Teach students to paraphrase chunks when appropriate. “Reach a conclusion” may become “conclude”, not “arrive at a result” unless that phrasing fits. “Raise concerns” may become “express worries”, but “lift concerns” is not the same phrase.

Phrase-level vocabulary is therefore central to natural paraphrase.

Register controls whether a paraphrase fits the task

A source can be conversational, formal, technical or literary. A paraphrase answer usually needs clear neutral academic English, not slang and not inflated legalistic diction. If the source says “kids” in dialogue, a formal summary may use “children”. If a technical term has no simple equivalent without losing meaning, retain it.

Register also affects tone answers. Calling a speaker “mad” may be informal and ambiguous; angry, frustrated, indignant are more precise depending on evidence. A good vocabulary system includes level of formality as part of meaning.

Diagnostic profile 1: many unknown words

If comprehension collapses because too many high-utility words are unknown, the first intervention is breadth. Use the Top 100 and high-frequency Secondary 2 owners, accessible reading and spaced review. Summary practice cannot compensate for lexical access that is too low.

Recheck with comparable passages. If the number of load-bearing unknowns falls and comprehension improves, continue. If vocabulary improves but comprehension remains weak, investigate syntax, reference and inference.

Diagnosis should move with the learner.

Diagnostic profile 2: words known, sense selection weak

This student recognises forms but repeatedly activates the wrong meaning of polysemous words. Teaching should compare senses across sentences, especially everyday versus academic/technical contexts. Dictionary sense selection and context substitution are high-value exercises.

Do not respond with more new words. Deepen common ones. One repaired sense of current, issue, function, charge can prevent many future errors.

Progress appears when the student asks “Which meaning fits here?” automatically.

Diagnostic profile 3: comprehension good, paraphrase inaccurate

The student can explain the source orally but changes meaning when writing in own words. Common causes are synonym substitution, certainty inflation, lost scope or causal distortion. Use the seven-dimension paraphrase audit and sentence-by-sentence meaning checks.

Start with short propositions, not full passages. Once fidelity is secure, increase compression and combine points. The goal is to make paraphrase a meaning-preservation task before it becomes a speed task.

Delayed rechecks should use fresh source sentences so the student demonstrates a transferable method.

Diagnostic profile 4: paraphrase accurate, summary too long

This learner rebuilds sentences faithfully but treats every detail as essential. The problem is selection and grouping rather than vocabulary depth. Teach relevance, superordinates and idea-level compression. Ask the student to label each detail: main point, support, example, repetition, decoration.

Then require one category word to cover several related details. The summary becomes shorter because thinking is more organised, not because words are randomly deleted.

Some students over-compress. They remove qualifiers, exceptions or causal links and produce a neat but inaccurate sentence. Teaching should focus on load-bearing boundaries: scope, certainty, condition, time and contrast.

Use paired examples where one short summary is semantically complete and another is too broad. Students identify the missing boundary. This develops an internal sense of “necessary information”.

Concise writing is not minimalist writing; it is complete meaning with unnecessary material removed.

How parents can support comprehension vocabulary

Parents do not need to run examination passages every night. Take a short article, school notice or non-fiction page and ask three questions: “Which word mattered most for understanding this paragraph?”, “What does it mean here?”, and “How could you explain the same idea in different words without changing it?” These questions train load-bearing vocabulary and paraphrase naturally.

If a child asks for a word meaning, first look at the sentence together. Can contrast, example or morphology narrow the sense? Then verify with a dictionary. This models independent reading rather than making the parent the permanent dictionary.

When comprehension looks like a vocabulary problem but is not

If the student knows the key words yet cannot explain the sentence, the problem may be syntax. If the sentence is understood but the paragraph point is missed, text structure or inference may be weak. If the ideas require unfamiliar world knowledge, background knowledge may dominate. If the question is misunderstood, task vocabulary may be the barrier.

The summary preserves sequence loosely, avoids claiming publicity was the only cause of low attendance, retains the adaptation decision and keeps the conditions on future topics. It does not try to replace “student feedback” with an exotic synonym because the phrase is already precise.
