Diagnose. Ask what the learner understood, what knowledge was available, what decision was selected and where uncertainty appeared. A weak result can come from missing prerequisites, misunderstanding, retrieval failure, method selection, execution or transfer. Similar scores do not prove the same cause.
Model and contrast. Use one clear example and one plausible near miss. Explain the relationship that makes the sound example work. Ask the learner to diagnose the near miss before receiving the correction. Then vary the surface so the learner must recognise the underlying idea rather than memorise the original page.
Practice. Choose a task that directly addresses the diagnosis. Keep enough context to preserve meaning while limiting irrelevant load. After an error, identify the changed action before repeating. After success, ask why the method fits. A smaller number of informative attempts can teach more than a large set completed without inspection.
Feedback and return. Give feedback that can enter the next attempt. Require a fresh example, then return after a gap. Record prompts and references used. Immediate supported success, delayed retrieval and independent transfer are different kinds of evidence; all can be valuable when described accurately.
Transfer. Put the capability back into a complete unfamiliar task and reduce unnecessary support. If performance falls, compare the demands instead of erasing earlier progress. Maintain secure learning lightly and redirect intensive attention to the next meaningful bottleneck.
