PSLE Vocabulary Cloze practice asks a learner to choose a word that fits meaning, grammar and context at the same time. The useful question is not simply “Which word do I know?” but “Which option preserves the sentence, the paragraph and the writer’s intended relationship?” This workbook uses original multiple-choice cloze passages with worked reasoning.
Primary 6 vocabulary cloze becomes difficult when several options are grammatically possible. Context clues, collocation, connotation, degree and logical sequence then decide the answer. A learner may know every option individually and still need to distinguish “reluctant” from “unable”, “eventually” from “immediately”, or “observe” from “assume”.
This practice set belongs to the What is PSLE Vocabulary architecture and the Vocabulary Learning Hub. It complements the original Unseen Passage Set 1 and Set 2. These are original teaching exercises, not official specimen questions.
50-second route
Attempt one cloze passage before opening its explanation. For every blank, eliminate options that break meaning or grammar. For the final two choices, identify the exact clue. After checking, write one new sentence using the winning word in a different context.
Vocabulary Cloze 1
During a fictional class project, the group encountered an unexpected change. Alicia did not make an immediate announcement because the information was still (1) A provisional / B permanent / C invisible / D identical. Tricia suggested that they (2) A verify / B decorate / C exaggerate / D abandon the detail before sending the notice. Kai Kai initially considered the delay (3) A inconvenient / B impossible / C dishonest / D silent, but later recognised that the check prevented a misleading message. When the answer arrived, the group (4) A revised / B erased / C concealed / D invented the wording and explained the change (5) A precisely / B accidentally / C vaguely / D secretly.
Worked answers 1
1 A provisional. The information is not finally settled. 2 A verify. The group needs to check a detail, not embellish it. 3 A inconvenient. The delay may be troublesome without being impossible or dishonest. 4 A revised. They change existing wording to match new information. 5 A precisely. The explanation should state the actual change. Each answer is controlled by the paragraph relationship as well as the local grammar.
Transfer: Replace one correct option with a plausible wrong option and explain the new claim it would create. Then write a fresh five-sentence paragraph using two of the target words naturally.

Error repair after cloze
Classify each error before adding more practice. Was the option unfamiliar? Did the learner ignore a preposition or collocation? Did a stronger word add unsupported certainty? Did the sentence fit locally but contradict the paragraph? Repair that decision, then check it in a new passage.
Scope and examination context
The current PSLE English format should be checked through the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board. This workbook deliberately adds explanation and transfer work beyond a multiple-choice exercise so that the learner can understand why an answer fits rather than memorise an answer key.
