Jakarta travel vocabulary in English and Chinese: 100 useful words with English pronunciation, simplified Chinese, Hanyu Pinyin, meanings and example sentences.
A good trip begins with a few clear questions! Jakarta gives you plenty of chances to use practical English: at the airport, at hotel reception and when finding your way across the city. Start with the words that solve a real problem, then enjoy the places you came to see.
中文导读:欢迎来到雅加达!从机场到酒店,再到城市探索,清楚的英语问题能让旅程更顺畅。先学证件、航班、住宿和路线用语,再把旅行见闻写成自己的故事。
How to use this Jakarta vocabulary guide
The English place name is approximately juh-KAR-tuh; the Chinese name is 雅加达 (Yǎ jiā dá). English respelling is an approximate reading aid, with stressed syllables in capitals. Hanyu Pinyin pronounces the Chinese translation, not the English headword. Each definition matches the sense used in the example; other dictionary senses may differ.
Before travelling: use words 1–30 to read your itinerary and ask about your flight. Check actual entry requirements with Indonesian immigration and your airline; the vocabulary table does not determine eligibility.
At the hotel: use words 31–80. Practise stating your booking reference, checking what is included and reporting a problem clearly.
Out in Jakarta: use words 81–100 with the city notes and conversations. Keep the address of your accommodation available in its original local form.

Jakarta: history and visiting notes
Keep practical arrangements clear, then make room for the city itself. Choose a few places and use their own current information when planning your day.
Soekarno–Hatta: start with the right terminal
Soekarno–Hatta serves the Jakarta area. Before leaving for the airport, check your airline’s current terminal and flight information. Read the difference between arrival and departure, then ask a precise question: “Which terminal should we use?” An airport transfer is transport to or from your accommodation; it is not automatically included in a reservation. Confirm the meeting point and arrangement with the provider. Check the airport operator’s flight-information page.
中文:苏加诺—哈达机场服务雅加达地区。出发前向航空公司确认当前航站楼和航班信息。酒店接送不一定包含在预订中,要另行确认安排。
Hotel reception: make the first conversation easy
Have your booking reference ready and ask which amenities are included. Breakfast, laundry, minibar items and room service are separate services; a room reservation does not establish that every one is free or available. If you need something, name it: “May I have an extra pillow?” is easier to answer than “Can you make the room better?”
中文:准备好预订编号,再询问包含哪些设施和服务。早餐、洗衣、迷你吧及客房送餐的收费与供应情况,应分别向酒店核实。
Monas: a landmark with a historical purpose
Monas, or Monumen Nasional, stands in Merdeka Square and commemorates Indonesian independence. Indonesia’s tourism ministry describes historical displays within its base. Use landmark for a recognisable location, then go a step further in your writing: explain what the monument commemorates. Consult current visitor information before planning access to particular areas; this guide does not promise an observation-deck visit. Read Indonesia’s official Monas introduction.
中文:莫纳斯国家纪念碑位于独立广场,纪念印度尼西亚独立。写作时不仅说它是地标,也说明其纪念意义。参观具体区域前,请核实最新开放安排。
Kota Tua: connect the old town with the timeline
Kota Tua is associated with the development of colonial Batavia. The official tourism guide introduces museums and historic places in this area. Choose one stop, read its own explanation and keep the historical period clear. Today’s district and yesterday’s town are related, but they are not identical descriptions. A hotel address or a landmark can help with the journey; a checked museum label helps with the history. Explore Kota Tua through Indonesia’s tourism guide.
中文:老城区与殖民时期巴达维亚的发展有关。选择一个场馆,读清它自己的历史说明,再把年代与地点联系起来。今天的区域名称与过去的城镇范围并不一定相同。
City districts: plan a manageable day
A map can help you group nearby activities instead of choosing places only because their names sound familiar. Check the actual district and address, allow for travel time and ask whether a suggested shortcut is suitable for walking. High-rise and skyscraper both describe tall buildings, but skyscraper generally suggests exceptional height. Neither tells you how easy the surrounding streets are to navigate. Plan with Jakarta’s official tourism portal.
中文:把相近的活动放在同一天,通常比只按名字选地点更容易安排。核对区域和地址,也要问清所谓近路是否适合步行。建筑很高,不代表周围路线容易走。
Everyday shops: ask for the place you need
A convenience store is useful for small everyday purchases; a supermarket usually offers a larger range. A department store has distinct product departments, while a shopping mall contains separate shops. Use the right noun in your question. At the end of the day, try describing one useful exchange in English and Chinese. That ordinary conversation is part of your travel story too!
中文:便利店、超市、百货商店和购物中心并不是同一类地方。用准确的名称问路,再把一次日常交流写成英语和中文小段落。
Six English–Chinese travel conversations
These fictional exchanges are speaking practice. They are not records of particular staff conversations or promises from operators.

中文:旅客:我在哪里领取行李?/工作人员:请根据航班号查看显示屏。
Checking a reservation
Guest: I have a reservation. Here is my booking reference. / Staff: Thank you. May I see your identification?
中文:住客:我有预订,这是预订编号。/工作人员:谢谢,可以看一下您的身份证明吗?
Asking what is included
Guest: Is breakfast included? / Staff: Let me check the details of your reservation.
中文:住客:预订包含早餐吗?/工作人员:我查一下您的预订详情。
Reporting a fault
Guest: The hairdryer is faulty. Could you bring a replacement? / Staff: I will arrange for someone to check it.
中文:住客:吹风机有故障,可以提供替换的吗?/工作人员:我会安排人员检查。
Giving a location
Traveller: Could you write down the hotel’s address and postcode? / Staff: Certainly. I will include a nearby landmark.
中文:旅客:可以写下酒店地址和邮政编码吗?/工作人员:当然,我也会注明附近的地标。
Meaning differences worth noticing
Direct and nonstop
A direct flight can include a stop while operating under the same flight number. Nonstop means no intermediate stop. Read the actual itinerary, including any landing or aircraft change, rather than assuming the two words promise the same journey.
中文:直达航班可能经停;不停站航班则没有中途停站。实际安排应以行程信息为准。
Validity and expiry
Validity describes when a document remains valid; expiry identifies its end point. Neither word tells you the entry rule for a particular traveller. Check the applicable official requirements separately.
中文:有效期与到期日描述证件的时间状态,不能单独判断某位旅客是否符合入境要求。
An amenity and an included service
An amenity is a feature or service. Included means covered by your specific arrangement. Ask about inclusion rather than treating an advertised amenity as a promise of free use.
中文:有某项便利设施,不等于您的预订已包含免费使用。应问清具体预订安排。
Safe as a noun
The room safe is a secure container for valuables. Safe as an adjective means free from unacceptable danger. The table uses the noun sense; “How do I open the safe?” asks about the container.
中文:本表中的safe指保险箱,是名词;作为形容词时,它才表示安全的。
Baggage and a suitcase
Baggage is an uncountable collective noun: say “my baggage” or “two pieces of baggage”. A suitcase is countable: one suitcase, two suitcases.
中文:baggage是不可数集合名词;suitcase则可以直接用单复数表示箱子的数量。

A short Jakarta writing model
Fictional learning model: this demonstrates vocabulary and sentence choices. It is not an account of an actual journey.
Our flight to Jakarta was delayed, so I checked the expected arrival time before contacting the hotel. At reception, I showed my booking reference and asked whether breakfast was included. Later, I noticed that the hairdryer was faulty. I described the problem and requested a replacement. Before exploring the city, I saved the hotel’s address and asked for directions to a landmark. The next day, we planned time for Kota Tua. A few ordinary words helped us handle the practical details, leaving more attention for the places around us.
中文写作示范:前往雅加达的航班延误了,所以联系酒店前,我先核对了预计抵达时间。在接待处,我出示预订编号,并询问是否包含早餐。后来,我发现吹风机有故障,于是说明问题,要求提供替换设备。探索城市前,我保存了酒店地址,并询问前往一处地标的路线。第二天,我们安排时间参观老城区。几个日常词语帮助我们处理实际事务,让我们有更多精力留意周围的地方。
Your turn: speak, write and compare
Write a 100–150-word arrival-and-hotel scene using eight headwords. Include a reservation question, a clear problem report and one location detail. Read it aloud with a partner taking the staff role. Translate it into Chinese, then check that both versions describe the same services and arrangements.
Check the word’s meaning, the sentence’s grammar and the agreement between the English and Chinese. Verify a historical claim before adding it to your own travel account.
