Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Nuremberg connects English with objects, processes and questions you can explore through a city: how a toy moves, how a page is arranged, how authority is organised, and how a historical claim is supported. Each word comes with a pronunciation guide, a Simplified Chinese meaning, tone-marked pinyin and a translated example.
This is a learning route for students, families and curious travellers who want to move beyond naming an attractive building. Start with a familiar object, learn a more precise distinction, then explain why that distinction matters. The same habits transfer to a school composition, a museum conversation, a presentation or a careful response to something you read online.
The list includes specialist comparison vocabulary alongside words closely associated with Nuremberg. A British landholding term, a later printing process or a general legal concept can help you compare systems, but its presence here does not mean it describes every local building, historical event or exhibit. The entries and practice scenes are teaching examples, not promises that particular objects are currently displayed.
Pronunciation uses an approximate, broadly British-English respelling. Capital letters mark stress; uh represents a light unstressed sound. The Chinese gloss gives the intended sense here, and its pinyin is a reading aid for that gloss. Learn the whole English example rather than treating the Chinese expression as a replacement that fits every possible context.

Before the words: Nuremberg connections
A city of toys
Nuremberg’s municipal Toy Museum places the city’s toy tradition across more than six centuries, from early doll-making to later industrial production. This makes toys a useful starting point for questions about materials, movement and the world adults imagined for children. A miniature household or machine can be described as an object before you consider the social assumptions behind it.
Printing, images and a real book-making connection
The official Albrecht Dürer’s House introduction identifies the house as Dürer’s home and workplace from 1509 to 1528 and describes its painting and printing workshop. Separately, the city library’s historical collections include preparatory drawings and layouts for the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle. Keep those connections distinct: studying typesetting does not mean that every printing technique was Dürer’s own.
The castle and competing forms of authority
The Bavarian Palace Administration’s castle history explains the role of the burgrave and the growing autonomy of the imperial city. It records that the city acquired the remains of the Burgrave’s Castle in 1427. This is a useful reminder that a picturesque skyline also represents changing ownership, obligations and political relationships. Use a dated source before attaching a title or function to a particular person.
Food as a reading task
Nuremberg’s official tourism guide to local specialities highlights gingerbread and local sausages. Our food chapter starts there and widens into ingredient and confectionery language. It does not claim that every listed ingredient belongs in lebkuchen or that every sweet is a local speciality. Read the actual label, distinguish the product from its coating, and ask clear questions about what you are buying.
History that requires care
The Memorium Nuremberg Trials identifies Courtroom 600 as the setting for the International Military Tribunal proceedings from 20 November 1945 to 1 October 1946. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s account of the evidence explains the importance of documents and testimony in establishing the record of Nazi crimes. Read this history with attention to victims, named perpetrators, evidence and precise legal language.
A dated planning check
Checked on 4 October 2026: the official Courtroom 600 notice says the room has not been used for trials since 1 March 2020. It lists a closure on 7–9 October 2026 for the Nuremberg Forum; the permanent exhibition is a separate matter. Recheck that notice and the museum’s opening information before travelling. Older brochures can describe arrangements that no longer apply.
Chapter 1: Describe toys through use and movement
Entries 1–10. Back to contents
Begin with an object someone can imagine. What does a child do with it? Does it roll, rock, balance, conceal something or invite pretend play? These verbs help the object name carry meaning. When comparing two toys, keep one feature constant and vary another: the shape may be similar while the way it is controlled is different.
1. teddy bear
Say it: TED-ee bair
中文: 泰迪熊 · tài dí xióng
Meaning: A soft, stuffed plaything shaped like a bear, usually small enough to hold, cuddle or include in imaginative games.
Example: For our story exercise, Mei gave the teddy bear a name and described its worn paws and crooked smile.
中文例句: 在故事练习中,美给泰迪熊起了名字,并描写了它磨损的爪子和歪歪的笑容。
Use it well: Use this compound for the bear-shaped toy specifically. Other stuffed animals need their own names, such as a toy rabbit or a soft elephant.
2. dollhouse
Say it: DOL-hows
中文: 玩偶屋 · wán ǒu wū
Meaning: A miniature house used with small dolls, often furnished with tiny versions of rooms and objects found in a full-sized home.
Example: Our design worksheet asked us to place a table inside the dollhouse without blocking the miniature kitchen door.
中文例句: 我们的设计练习要求把一张桌子放进玩偶屋,同时不挡住微型厨房的门。
Use it well: This spelling is especially common in American English; British English often uses doll’s house. Describe the scale when comparing miniature furniture with everyday objects.
3. jigsaw puzzle
Say it: JIG-saw puz-uhl
中文: 拼图 · pīn tú
Meaning: A picture divided into separate shaped pieces that a player fits together until the complete image appears again.
Example: In our group activity, we sorted the jigsaw puzzle pieces by colour before looking for the straight edges.
中文例句: 在小组活动中,我们先按颜色整理拼图块,再寻找带直边的拼图块。
Use it well: The whole activity is a puzzle; each loose part is a piece. Say do a jigsaw puzzle or put one together, depending on your sentence.
4. spinning top
Say it: SPIN-ing top
中文: 陀螺 · tuó luó
Meaning: A toy designed to turn rapidly while balancing on a narrow point, with its body rotating around a central axis.
Example: We sketched a spinning top twice in our science notebook, first upright and then leaning as it slowed down.
中文例句: 我们在科学笔记本中画了两次陀螺:先画它直立的样子,再画它减速时倾斜的样子。
Use it well: The name describes the toy rather than any object that happens to rotate. Useful accompanying verbs include spin, wobble and topple, each describing a different movement.
5. jack-in-the-box
Say it: JACK-in-thuh-boks
中文: 弹簧玩偶盒 · tán huáng wán ǒu hé
Meaning: A surprise toy containing a figure that suddenly springs from a box when the lid opens or its release is triggered.
Example: For the picture sequence, I drew the jack-in-the-box closed, opening and finally showing the figure above the rim.
中文例句: 在连环画练习中,我画了弹簧玩偶盒关闭、打开以及玩偶最后伸出盒沿的三个状态。
Use it well: Keep the hyphens because the words form one compound noun. Describe the lid and figure separately when explaining how the sudden appearance creates the surprise.
6. rocking horse
Say it: ROK-ing haws
中文: 摇摆木马 · yáo bǎi mù mǎ
Meaning: A horse-shaped toy large enough for a child to sit on, supported so that it moves backwards and forwards.
Example: Our comparison drawing showed a rocking horse on curved runners beside a wheeled horse that could travel across the floor.
中文例句: 我们的比较图把一匹装在弧形底座上的摇摆木马和一匹能在地板上移动的带轮玩具马画在一起。
Use it well: Rock names the repeated movement here. A child can ride this toy while remaining in roughly the same place, unlike a toy pulled along a path.
7. hobbyhorse
Say it: HOB-ee-haws
中文: 马头杆 · mǎ tóu gān
Meaning: A pretend riding toy consisting of a horse’s head fixed to a long stick, which the player holds between their legs.
Example: In the pretend parade, Arun rode his hobbyhorse through a cardboard gate and announced the arrival of a royal messenger.
中文例句: 在模拟游行中,阿伦骑着马头杆穿过纸板城门,宣布王室信使到来。
Use it well: This entry uses the stick-toy meaning. In conversation, the same word can describe a favourite topic that someone repeatedly returns to, especially at tiresome length.
8. hand puppet
Say it: HAND pup-it
中文: 手偶 · shǒu ǒu
Meaning: A figure with a hollow body worn over the hand, allowing fingers inside to control movements of its head or limbs.
Example: For our short dialogue, Sara made the hand puppet nod while her partner read the traveller’s questions aloud.
中文例句: 在简短对话练习中,莎拉让手偶点头,同伴则大声读出旅行者的问题。
Use it well: British speakers also say glove puppet. The operating hand sits inside the figure; describing where the performer’s fingers go helps explain this particular form of puppetry.
9. pull toy
Say it: PUL toy
中文: 拖拉玩具 · tuō lā wán jù
Meaning: A wheeled plaything moved along the ground by pulling an attached cord, sometimes with moving parts linked to its wheels.
Example: In our toy-design sketch, the pull toy had four wheels and a cord attached beneath the wooden dog’s nose.
中文例句: 在我们的玩具设计草图中,拖拉玩具有四个轮子,一根绳子系在木狗的鼻子下方。
Use it well: Explain both the travelling movement and any extra action separately. A model might roll forwards while its head bobs, but that additional animation is not essential.
10. skittle
Say it: SKIT-uhl
中文: 撞柱游戏木柱 · zhuàng zhù yóu xì mù zhù
Meaning: One of the upright, usually bottle-shaped targets that players try to knock down with a ball in a bowling-style game.
Example: For the counting task, we drew one skittle still standing and circled the eight that the ball had knocked over.
中文例句: 在计数练习中,我们画出一个仍然直立的撞柱游戏木柱,并圈出被球撞倒的八个。
Use it well: The singular names one target. The plural skittles can name the whole game, so check whether a sentence is discussing the equipment or the activity.
Put the distinction to work
Try a two-sentence object label. First identify the toy and one visible feature. Then explain the action that feature allows. For example, a statement about a horse-shaped toy becomes more useful when you explain whether the rider rocks on curved supports or carries the toy while moving. Keep guesses about age, maker and ownership out of the label until you have a source. Clear description is a foundation for interpretation, not a substitute for it.

Chapter 2: Explain mechanisms, materials and optical play
Entries 11–20. Back to contents
An object can look simple while hiding an interesting chain of actions. Trace a movement from the hand that starts it to the part that finally moves. Use arrows in a sketch, then turn those arrows into clauses with when, as and because. Optical toys add another question: what changes in the object, and what seems to happen in the viewer’s perception?
11. cam
Say it: KAM
中文: 凸轮 · tū lún
Meaning: A shaped machine part whose rotating or sliding surface makes another component follow a controlled pattern of movement.
Example: On our mechanism diagram, the cam lifted a small rod so that the model bird appeared to peck at regular intervals.
中文例句: 在我们的机构图中,凸轮抬起一根小杆,使模型鸟看起来按固定间隔啄食。
Use it well: The outline matters: changing the shape changes the resulting movement. Use this mechanical sense when discussing toy mechanisms, rather than the informal abbreviation for camera.
12. crank
Say it: KRANK
中文: 曲柄 · qū bǐng
Meaning: A bent arm or turning handle connected to a mechanism, used to transmit motion between rotating parts or produce another movement.
Example: Our labelled model included a crank at the side, which the imagined operator would turn to make the little platform rise.
中文例句: 我们的标注模型侧面装有一个曲柄,设想中的操作者转动它,就能使小平台升起。
Use it well: The word can be a noun or a verb: a crank is a component, while to crank a handle describes the action of turning it.
13. pushrod
Say it: PUSH-rod
中文: 推杆 · tuī gǎn
Meaning: A rigid rod that carries a pushing movement from one part of a mechanism to another, often moving back and forth.
Example: In our wooden-toy plan, the pushrod rose through a guide and gently lifted the figure’s hat above its head.
中文例句: 在我们的木制玩具设计图中,推杆穿过导向装置向上移动,轻轻地把人物的帽子顶到头顶上方。
Use it well: Trace the transmitted movement when identifying this part. In a simple cam-driven model, the cam provides the changing lift and the rod passes that movement onwards.
14. tinplate
Say it: TIN-playt
中文: 马口铁 · mǎ kǒu tiě
Meaning: Thin iron or steel sheet coated with tin, producing a metal material used for containers and many kinds of manufactured objects.
Example: Our materials chart placed tinplate under coated metals, and we drew an enlarged section showing its thin outer layer.
中文例句: 我们的材料表把马口铁列在镀层金属一栏,并画了放大剖面图来显示其薄薄的外层。
Use it well: The name describes a coated material, not a sheet made entirely from tin. It is normally uncountable: write a piece or sheet of tinplate when counting samples.
15. mechanical bank
Say it: muh-KAN-i-kuhl bank
中文: 机械储钱罐 · jī xiè chǔ qián guàn
Meaning: A coin-saving container whose mechanism makes a figure or another part perform an action as money is put inside.
Example: For our invention exercise, we designed a mechanical bank in which a small metal bird carried a coin towards a slot.
中文例句: 在发明练习中,我们设计了一个机械储钱罐,其中一只小金属鸟把硬币送向投币口。
Use it well: Bank here means a savings container. Describe the animated action and the coin’s route together, because that relationship distinguishes the object from an ordinary still coin box.
16. construction set
Say it: kuhn-STRUK-shuhn set
中文: 拼装玩具套装 · pīn zhuāng wán jù tào zhuāng
Meaning: A collection of reusable toy components that can be assembled into models, allowing a builder to make different structures from the same pieces.
Example: Our challenge was to use the construction set to build a bridge wide enough for a small model cart.
中文例句: 我们的挑战是用拼装玩具套装搭一座足够宽、能让小模型车通过的桥。
Use it well: The set is the collection of parts; a finished model is one possible result. Name components such as beams, plates or connectors when explaining your design.
17. zoetrope
Say it: ZOH-ih-trohp
中文: 旋转画筒 · xuán zhuǎn huà tǒng
Meaning: An optical device with sequential pictures inside a rotating drum; looking through its slits makes the pictured action appear to move.
Example: We planned a zoetrope strip showing a ball at different heights, then checked that the final picture linked smoothly to the first.
中文例句: 我们设计了一条旋转画筒用的画带,画出球处于不同高度的样子,再检查最后一幅图能否与第一幅顺畅衔接。
Use it well: The drawings themselves remain still on the strip. Explain the changing sequence and the viewing slits when describing how this toy produces an impression of animation.
18. thaumatrope
Say it: THAW-muh-trohp
中文: 双面旋转幻盘 · shuāng miàn xuán zhuǎn huàn pán
Meaning: A small optical toy with a different picture on each side of a card, which appear combined when the card spins quickly.
Example: For our thaumatrope design, we put a flower on one side and an empty vase on the other.
中文例句: 在双面旋转幻盘的设计中,我们把一朵花画在一面,把一个空花瓶画在另一面。
Use it well: The important relationship is between the two images. Choose pictures that complete each other, and explain the apparent combination rather than claiming the printed pictures physically join.
19. kaleidoscope
Say it: kuh-LY-duh-skohp
中文: 万花筒 · wàn huā tǒng
Meaning: A viewing tube containing mirrors and loose coloured pieces that create changing, repeated patterns when the tube is turned.
Example: After drawing an imaginary kaleidoscope pattern, we identified which shapes repeated around the centre and which colours appeared beside them.
中文例句: 画出想象中的万花筒图案后,我们找出了围绕中心重复的形状,以及它们旁边出现的颜色。
Use it well: Use pattern, reflection and symmetry to describe the view precisely. The word also has a figurative sense for a colourful, changing mixture, such as a lively crowd.
20. whirligig
Say it: WUR-lih-gig
中文: 风动旋转玩具 · fēng dòng xuán zhuǎn wán jù
Meaning: In this wind-powered sense, a toy or decorative device with parts that whirl when moving air catches its blades or paddles.
Example: Our garden-design drawing included a whirligig shaped like a sailor, with broad paddles where the figure’s hands would be.
中文例句: 我们的花园设计图中有一个水手造型的风动旋转玩具,人物双手的位置装着宽大的桨叶。
Use it well: The word can cover several rotating devices, so specify the power source. Here, describing blades catching a breeze separates the wind-driven design from other spinning toys.
Put the distinction to work
Write an explanation in three stages: input, change and visible result. You might start, “As the handle turns, the connected part moves.” Then replace “part” with the correct name only after checking the diagram. Precision earns its place by making the explanation clearer. Do not add specialist words merely to make a paragraph sound advanced. If a transparent teaching model differs from an enclosed historical toy, say that you are using the model to understand a possible mechanism.

Chapter 3: Follow work through a printing shop
Entries 21–31. Back to contents
These terms distinguish people, tools, supporting materials and arrangements. Sort them into those categories before trying to memorise them. The English word furniture is especially instructive: its everyday meaning can lead a reader in the wrong direction inside a printing workshop. Context tells you which sense to activate. The final entry introduces a different printing process for comparison, rather than placing every technique in one period.
21. compositor
Say it: kuhm-POZ-i-tuh
中文: 排字工 · pái zì gōng
Meaning: A printing worker who prepares text for reproduction by selecting, arranging and correcting type, often alongside illustrations.
Example: For our workshop role play, the compositor checked the spelling before arranging the opening paragraph in metal type.
中文例句: 在我们的工坊角色扮演中,排字工先检查拼写,然后用金属活字排出开头一段。
Use it well: This names the person doing the typesetting. When describing a printing team, explain the job rather than assuming every printer performs exactly the same work.
22. composing stick
Say it: kuhm-POH-zing stik
中文: 排字手盘 · pái zì shǒu pán
Meaning: A handheld holder in which a printer builds lines from individual pieces of type, usually with an adjustable line width.
Example: In the practice diagram, a composing stick held the short heading while another line waited to be assembled.
中文例句: 在练习图中,排字手盘托着短标题,另一行文字则等待排字。
Use it well: The word stick can be misleading: picture a small supporting tray. Its adjustable end determines how much text fits across a line.
23. forme
Say it: FAWM
中文: 印版组合 · yìn bǎn zǔ hé
Meaning: The assembled type and any illustration blocks secured within a printing frame, ready to transfer an arrangement onto paper.
Example: Our labelled sketch showed a complete forme containing a title, three paragraphs and a small illustration beneath them.
中文例句: 我们带标签的草图展示了一套完整的印版组合,其中有标题、三个段落和位于其下方的一幅小插图。
Use it well: The final e is silent in this British spelling. Name the surrounding frame a chase; forme refers to the assembled printing matter it contains.
24. chase
Say it: CHAYS
中文: 版框 · bǎn kuàng
Meaning: A strong rectangular metal frame that surrounds and secures an arrangement of type and printing blocks for a press.
Example: I outlined the chase in blue so that the class could distinguish the outer frame from the letters inside.
中文例句: 我用蓝色勾出版框,让全班能够区分外框和里面的字。
Use it well: This printing noun sounds exactly like the everyday verb meaning pursue. In a diagram, label the frame itself rather than the complete printed page.
25. galley
Say it: GAL-ee
中文: 排字盘 · pái zì pán
Meaning: A shallow tray that supports lines of assembled type before they are arranged and secured for printing a page.
Example: The worksheet showed two completed lines resting in a galley while the next line was still being set.
中文例句: 练习纸展示了两行已排好的活字放在排字盘里,而下一行仍在排字。
Use it well: Publishing also uses galley as a shortened name for a galley proof. Check whether a sentence refers to physical equipment or a preliminary printed version.
26. furniture
Say it: FUR-ni-chuh
中文: 版面填空块 · bǎn miàn tián kòng kuài
Meaning: Nonprinting wooden or metal spacing pieces placed around areas of type to occupy empty space and support the arrangement.
Example: In our model printing frame, the furniture filled the broad gaps around the paragraph without adding any printed letters.
中文例句: 在我们的模拟版框中,版面填空块填满段落周围的大空隙,却不会增加任何印出的文字。
Use it well: This is a collective noun: use a piece of furniture when counting one spacer. In a printing context, it does not mean workshop tables or chairs.
27. frisket
Say it: FRIS-kit
中文: 护纸框 · hù zhǐ kuàng
Meaning: A light frame carrying a cut protective covering that shields the blank parts of a sheet during hand-press printing.
Example: Our paper model used a frisket with an opening over the text and a protective border around the edges.
中文例句: 我们的纸模型使用了护纸框,文字上方留有开口,四周边缘则有保护边框。
Use it well: Its purpose is to keep unwanted ink away from areas intended to remain clean. Picture a mask with openings, rather than an additional printing surface.
28. tympan
Say it: TIM-puhn
中文: 承纸框 · chéng zhǐ kuàng
Meaning: A covered, padded frame on a hand press that supports the paper and helps distribute pressure during the printing impression.
Example: On the classroom diagram, we placed the sheet against the tympan before showing how it folded towards the inked type.
中文例句: 在课堂图示上,我们先把纸张放在承纸框上,再展示它如何向涂了油墨的活字翻合。
Use it well: The protective covering and packing matter as well as the frame. Distinguish this paper-supporting part from the frisket, which masks areas that should stay unprinted.
29. sorts
Say it: SAWTS
中文: 单枚活字 · dān méi huó zì
Meaning: The separate pieces of printing type that carry individual characters and can be selected, arranged and returned to a case.
Example: For the typesetting exercise, we counted the available sorts before choosing a sentence with several repeated letters.
中文例句: 在排字练习中,我们先数了可用的单枚活字,再选出一个含有几个重复字母的句子。
Use it well: This headword is plural; one physical piece is a sort. Keep the specialist meaning clear, because sorts in ordinary conversation usually means kinds or varieties.
30. imposition
Say it: im-puh-ZISH-uhn
中文: 拼版 · pīn bǎn
Meaning: The planning and arrangement of pages for printing so that they appear in the intended sequence when the sheets become a book.
Example: We tested the imposition with a folded paper dummy before deciding where each numbered page should be printed.
中文例句: 我们先用折好的纸样检验拼版,再决定每个编号页面应该印在哪里。
Use it well: Pages placed beside each other on a flat sheet need not be neighbours in the finished book. The reading order is the essential test.
31. lithography
Say it: li-THOG-ruh-fee
中文: 平版印刷术 · píng bǎn yìn shuā shù
Meaning: A printing process using a prepared flat surface whose image areas accept greasy ink while other areas repel it.
Example: The lesson compared lithography with a carved woodblock to explain why a flat printing surface can still produce an image.
中文例句: 这堂课把平版印刷术与雕刻的木版作比较,解释平坦的印版为何仍能印出图像。
Use it well: The process developed after Dürer’s lifetime. Keep printing methods and dates separate rather than attaching every technique in this guide to one artist’s workshop.
Put the distinction to work
Build a process paragraph with clear subjects. “The compositor…” tells us who is acting; “the type…” tells us what is being handled. Avoid a chain of passive sentences in which everything is simply “done” or “made.” If the object receiving the action is more important than the worker, a passive sentence can still be useful. The decision is about what your reader needs to follow, not a blanket rule that one grammatical form is always better.

Chapter 4: Read the design and structure of a book
Entries 32–42. Back to contents
A page has more than words. Spacing, letter shapes, marks and folded sheets help readers and makers navigate it. Separate visible design from physical construction. A feature on a page may guide the eye; a mark on a section may guide assembly. Comparing the two purposes gives you a stronger explanation than describing every small detail as decoration.
32. kerning
Say it: KUR-ning
中文: 字偶距调整 · zì ǒu jù tiáo zhěng
Meaning: Adjusting the spacing between a particular pair of letters so that their shapes sit together with a more balanced appearance.
Example: She changed the kerning between the capital A and V in our sample heading until the gap looked less awkward.
中文例句: 她调整了样例标题中大写字母A和V之间的字偶距,直到空隙看起来不那么别扭。
Use it well: Think in pairs when using this term. Tracking changes spacing across a longer stretch of text, while kerning targets a particular meeting of characters.
33. leading
Say it: LED-ing
中文: 行距 · háng jù
Meaning: The vertical spacing used between lines of type, which affects how closely successive lines sit together on a page.
Example: We increased the leading in the practice paragraph because the lines looked crowded even though the letters were clear.
中文例句: 我们增大了练习段落的行距,因为虽然字母清晰,行与行之间看起来还是很拥挤。
Use it well: In printing, this word rhymes with heading. The vowel changes in the familiar adjective leading, meaning foremost, so use the technical pronunciation when discussing page layout.
34. ligature
Say it: LIG-uh-chuh
中文: 连字 · lián zì
Meaning: A single written or printed character formed by combining two or more letters into one connected design or piece of type.
Example: We compared an ordinary f followed by i with a ligature that joined both letters into a single shape.
中文例句: 我们比较了普通字母f后接i的形式,以及把这两个字母连成一个字形的连字。
Use it well: Count the letters represented as well as the visible shape. The combination can carry more than one letter even when it looks like one character.
35. serif
Say it: SER-if
中文: 衬线 · chèn xiàn
Meaning: A small finishing stroke that projects from the end of a larger stroke in the design of a letter.
Example: Under the magnifier, the student traced a serif at the bottom of the printed capital before sketching its shape.
中文例句: 在放大镜下,学生先沿着印刷大写字母底部的一条衬线描看,然后画出它的形状。
Use it well: This names a feature of the letter rather than the entire letter. Compare enlarged examples so that the small finishing strokes are easy to identify.
36. catchword
Say it: KACH-wurd
中文: 接页词 · jiē yè cí
Meaning: A word placed at the foot of a page that repeats the opening word of the following page, helping indicate the sequence.
Example: In our mock old book, the catchword below the final line matched the first word on the next page.
中文例句: 在我们模拟的古书中,末行下方的接页词与下一页的第一个词相同。
Use it well: This historical bookmaking sense differs from a popular slogan. Look near the bottom of the page, then check the beginning of the next one.
37. signature
Say it: SIG-nuh-chuh
中文: 折页组标记 · zhé yè zǔ biāo jì
Meaning: An identifying letter or number printed on a book section to guide its position in the sequence for binding.
Example: In our booklet mock-up, the signature below the text helped us place the folded sections in the right order.
中文例句: 在我们的小册子样本中,正文下方的折页组标记帮助我们把折好的各组书页按正确顺序排列。
Use it well: Here the word names an ordering mark rather than a handwritten name. A quire is the gathering of folded sheets that the mark identifies.
38. quire
Say it: KWY-uh
中文: 折页组 · zhé yè zǔ
Meaning: A gathering of folded sheets forming one section of a book or manuscript, ready to be joined with other sections.
Example: The student opened the centre of the paper quire and marked the fold where the practice sewing would pass.
中文例句: 学生翻到纸制折页组的中间,在准备练习穿线的折痕处做了标记。
Use it well: Bookbinding uses this sense of gathering. In paper trading, quire can instead mean a quantity of sheets, so do not assume it always describes a bound section.
39. gutter
Say it: GUT-uh
中文: 内侧页边空白 · nèi cè yè biān kòng bái
Meaning: The blank inner space between the facing pages of an open book, where their margins approach the central fold or binding.
Example: We widened the gutter in our booklet plan so that the words would remain easy to see near the binding.
中文例句: 我们在小册子设计中加宽了内侧页边空白,让靠近装订处的文字仍然容易看清。
Use it well: Page designers also use gutter for the gap between columns. State whether you mean facing pages or columns when describing a layout to someone else.
40. pagination
Say it: paj-ih-NAY-shuhn
中文: 页码编排 · yè mǎ biān pái
Meaning: The numbering of a book or document’s pages, or the numbered sequence that allows readers to locate material within it.
Example: We checked the pagination of our practice booklet and found that two different pages had both been numbered twelve.
中文例句: 我们检查了练习小册子的页码编排,发现两个不同的页面都被标为第十二页。
Use it well: This term is useful when checking a contents list or reference. A page number identifies a position in the sequence; it does not describe the page’s subject.
41. drop cap
Say it: DROP kap
中文: 下沉式大写首字母 · xià chén shì dà xiě shǒu zì mǔ
Meaning: An enlarged capital at the beginning of a paragraph that extends down beside two or more lines of the following text.
Example: For the opening paragraph, I drew a drop cap tall enough to sit alongside the first three lines of our story.
中文例句: 在开头一段中,我画了一个下沉的大写首字母,它的高度足以与故事的前三行文字并排。
Use it well: Look at both its position and height. Simply making an entire heading larger does not create this distinctive treatment of the opening letter.
42. incunabulum
Say it: in-kyuh-NAB-yuh-luhm
中文: 摇篮本;1501年前的印本 · yáo lán běn; yī wǔ líng yī nián qián de yìn běn
Meaning: A book printed before the year 1501, within the earliest period of European printing.
Example: The catalogue called the volume an incunabulum because its printing date was 1493.
中文例句: 目录把这册书称为摇篮本,因为它的印刷年份是1493年。
Use it well: The plural is incunabula. The term classifies the printing date; it does not by itself tell you whether a displayed copy is complete or original.
Put the distinction to work
Take a permitted photograph or a freely accessible digital page and write an observation log with three columns in your notebook: visible feature, possible function and evidence needed. “I can see…” belongs in the first column. “It may help…” belongs in the second. A catalogue description or another page might supply the third. This small separation prevents a confident-looking page design from becoming an unsupported story about how every reader experienced the book.

Chapter 5: Understand titles, land and civic power
Entries 43–52. Back to contents
Historical titles name relationships, not just important people. Ask who appoints or elects someone, what the office permits, and which period the description belongs to. English translations can help you understand a foreign system, but an apparently familiar title may conceal differences. Some entries below are explicit comparison terms; they are useful because they make those differences discussable.
43. burgrave
Say it: BUR-grayv
中文: 城堡伯爵 · chéng bǎo bó jué
Meaning: A historical German title for a governor of a castle or town, including a noble whose authority over it became hereditary.
Example: In our historical role-play, the burgrave discussed guarding the castle while the town’s representatives raised questions about their own rights.
中文例句: 在历史角色扮演中,城堡伯爵讨论了城堡守卫事宜,而城镇代表则提出了有关自身权利的问题。
Use it well: The title identifies a particular historical office or rank. It should not automatically be used for every castle owner, town leader or noble mentioned in a text.
44. patrician
Say it: puh-TRISH-uhn
中文: 城市贵族 · chéng shì guì zú
Meaning: In the medieval urban sense, a member of an established upper-class family within certain European cities, especially their privileged governing circles.
Example: For the character study, we imagined a patrician explaining how family standing might influence access to the city’s council.
中文例句: 在人物研究中,我们设想一位城市贵族解释家族地位如何影响进入市议会的机会。
Use it well: The term also occurs in ancient Roman history. Identify the city and period before interpreting it, because social privileges and membership rules differed across historical settings.
45. elector
Say it: ih-LEK-tuh
中文: 选帝侯 · xuǎn dì hóu
Meaning: In Holy Roman Empire history, a prince entitled to participate in choosing a new emperor, rather than an ordinary voter in a modern election.
Example: Our revision card described an elector by his voting privilege and asked why that right gave the title political importance.
中文例句: 我们的复习卡根据投票特权解释选帝侯,并询问为什么这一权利使该头衔具有政治重要性。
Use it well: The historical title is often capitalised in books. Always establish which electoral system is meant, since the same English word also names voters in other contexts.
46. suzerain
Say it: SOO-zuh-rayn
中文: 宗主 · zōng zhǔ
Meaning: In a feudal relationship, an overlord to whom another lord owes allegiance or obligations; the word describes authority within that relationship.
Example: We drew an arrow from the vassal to the suzerain and labelled it with the service promised in our imagined agreement.
中文例句: 我们从封臣向宗主画了一支箭头,并标上想象协议中承诺提供的服役义务。
Use it well: Ask who owes duties to whom before using this term. It also has a later political meaning involving control over a dependent state, which needs separate context.
47. vassal
Say it: VAS-uhl
中文: 封臣 · fēng chén
Meaning: A person in a feudal relationship who owes loyalty and service to a lord, usually receiving protection and land or another benefit in return.
Example: In the classroom dialogue, the vassal promised support while asking the lord to honour the protection included in their agreement.
中文例句: 在课堂对话中,封臣承诺提供支持,同时要求领主履行协议中的保护责任。
Use it well: The word identifies an obligation between people of unequal authority. Do not assume it means any poor farmer; the person’s relationship to a lord is what matters.
48. fief
Say it: FEEF
中文: 封地 · fēng dì
Meaning: Land or other property held from a lord under a feudal arrangement that requires the holder to provide agreed services.
Example: For the map exercise, we outlined the fief and wrote the imagined holder’s service obligations in a box beside it.
中文例句: 在地图练习中,我们勾出了封地的边界,并在旁边的方框中写下设想的持有者所承担的服役义务。
Use it well: Use the term for the grant or holding, while vassal names the person in the relationship. A fief should not be described simply as an unconditional gift.
49. burgage
Say it: BUR-gij
中文: 城镇定租保有制 · chéng zhèn dìng zū bǎo yǒu zhì
Meaning: A historical form of town-property tenure; in the English arrangement taught here, a holding was kept in return for a fixed money rent.
Example: Our comparison worksheet used burgage to explain one English arrangement before asking how another town organised its property rights.
中文例句: 我们的比较练习用城镇定租保有制解释一种英国制度,再询问另一座城镇如何安排其财产权利。
Use it well: This is a British historical comparison term, not a general label for all medieval urban landholding. Check the jurisdiction before applying it to a German city.
50. alderman
Say it: AWL-duh-muhn
中文: 市政议员 · shì zhèng yì yuán
Meaning: A member of a town or city’s governing body, with the method of selection and precise responsibilities depending on the place and period.
Example: In our fictional council meeting, an alderman asked whether repairing the market paving should take priority over decorating the town hall.
中文例句: 在模拟市政会议上,一名市政议员询问,修理市场路面是否应优先于装饰市政厅。
Use it well: The plural is aldermen. Historical English titles do not map perfectly onto every German office, so explain the actual responsibilities when using this word in a comparison.
51. demesne
Say it: di-MAYN
中文: 领主自营地 · lǐng zhǔ zì yíng dì
Meaning: The part of a landed estate retained for the lord or owner’s own use, rather than granted out as separate tenant holdings.
Example: On our imaginary manor map, we shaded the demesne differently from the strips assigned to tenants and added a clear key.
中文例句: 在想象中的庄园地图上,我们用不同的阴影区分领主自营地和分配给佃户的条田,并添加了清晰的图例。
Use it well: Stress the final syllable, which rhymes with main. Focus on who retained the benefit of the land, rather than assuming the owner personally did all the work.
52. ward
Say it: WAWD
中文: 市区分区 · shì qū fēn qū
Meaning: A subdivision of a town or city used for local administration or political representation, with boundaries that separate it from neighbouring districts.
Example: Our map-making activity gave each ward a different colour so that the routes crossing district boundaries were easy to follow.
中文例句: 在地图制作活动中,我们给每个市区分区涂上不同的颜色,以便清楚追踪跨越分区边界的路线。
Use it well: This civic meaning differs from the hospital-room meaning and the legal term for someone under guardianship. Words such as boundary, representative and district usually identify the relevant sense.
Put the distinction to work
Create a relationship sentence instead of a list of titles. Use a frame such as “The source describes A as holding B under C.” Then add the date and the limit of your evidence. This is clearer than imagining a single pyramid in which every historical person fits neatly. A city, a ruler and an officeholder may have overlapping or contested powers. Good historical vocabulary lets you describe that complexity without pretending that a modern national government provides an exact model.

Chapter 6: Look at the parts of a historic structure
Entries 53–61. Back to contents
A building photograph shows surfaces; a plan or section can reveal relationships that the photograph hides. Learn to point to the exact part you mean. Is your word naming an entrance, an enclosed space, a piece of support or an opening? The comparison terms here help develop architectural reading, but they do not identify the construction of a particular Nuremberg building without further evidence.
53. putlog
Say it: PUT-log
中文: 脚手架横杆 · jiǎo shǒu jià héng gǎn
Meaning: A short horizontal member that supports the boards of a scaffold, sometimes resting at one end in a wall.
Example: In the building diagram, each putlog carried the platform on which the masons stood.
中文例句: 在建筑示意图中,每根脚手架横杆都支撑着石匠站立的平台。
Use it well: The word describes temporary building equipment. A hole associated with scaffolding is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of a building’s date.
54. postern
Say it: POHS-tuhn
中文: 侧门;后门 · cè mén; hòu mén
Meaning: A secondary entrance, especially a small back or side gate in a fortified enclosure.
Example: The plan showed a postern beside the main gate, so we compared the two routes.
中文例句: 平面图在主门旁标出了一道侧门,于是我们比较了这两条通道。
Use it well: This names the entrance’s secondary position. Do not assume that every small historic door is a concealed escape route or remains open today.
55. bailey
Say it: BAY-lee
中文: 城堡围院 · chéng bǎo wéi yuàn
Meaning: An enclosed open area inside a castle’s defensive walls, or between successive walls.
Example: Our sketch placed the workshops inside the bailey rather than on top of the tower.
中文例句: 我们的草图把作坊画在城堡围院里,而不是塔楼顶上。
Use it well: The enclosed-area sense is useful when reading a plan. Describe its boundaries before guessing how people once used each part of the space.
56. barbican
Say it: BAH-bi-kuhn
中文: 城门外防御工事 · chéng mén wài fáng yù gōng shì
Meaning: An outer defensive structure protecting an entrance, such as the approach to a castle gate or bridge.
Example: A dotted line on the model traced the approach through the barbican to the inner gate.
中文例句: 模型上的一条虚线标出了穿过城门外防御工事、通往内门的路线。
Use it well: Look for the relationship between the outer work and the entrance it protects. The word is more specific than a general defensive wall.
57. bressummer
Say it: BRES-uh-muh
中文: 承托上层墙体的大梁 · chéng tuō shàng céng qiáng tǐ de dà liáng
Meaning: A substantial horizontal beam carrying the wall above a wide opening, or the front wall of a projecting upper storey.
Example: In our timber-building drawing, the bressummer supported the upper wall across the broad shopfront.
中文例句: 在我们的木构建筑图中,这根大梁跨过宽阔的店面,承托着上层墙体。
Use it well: Identify the load-bearing role before using this specialist term. A decorative strip may look similar but cannot be named from appearance alone.
58. cruck
Say it: KRUK
中文: 曲木屋架主梁 · qū mù wū jià zhǔ liáng
Meaning: One of a pair of curved timbers rising towards each other to form a principal roof-supporting frame.
Example: We compared a British cruck with the different timber arrangements shown in our German building photographs.
中文例句: 我们把英国的曲木屋架主梁与德国建筑照片中不同的木构排列进行了比较。
Use it well: This comparison term is especially associated with historic British construction. Its inclusion does not claim that Nuremberg buildings generally use this framing system.
59. bracing
Say it: BRAY-sing
中文: 支撑体系 · zhī chēng tǐ xì
Meaning: Members arranged to stiffen a structure and resist unwanted movement or changes of shape.
Example: The student marked the diagonal bracing in blue to separate its function from the upright posts.
中文例句: 学生用蓝色标出斜向支撑,以区分它的作用和竖直立柱的作用。
Use it well: Here the word is a structural noun. In ordinary travel writing, bracing can instead be an adjective describing refreshingly cool air or activity.
60. merlon
Say it: MUR-luhn
中文: 实心城垛 · shí xīn chéng duǒ
Meaning: One of the solid raised sections along a battlement, with openings on either side.
Example: On the drawing, I shaded one merlon and left the neighbouring opening white.
中文例句: 在图上,我给一块实心城垛涂上阴影,并把旁边的开口留白。
Use it well: This is one solid component, not the complete battlement. Pair it with crenel when you need to explain the alternating pattern precisely.
61. crenel
Say it: KREN-uhl
中文: 垛口 · duǒ kǒu
Meaning: An opening between the raised solid parts along the top of a battlement.
Example: We labelled the gap as a crenel and the solid block beside it as a merlon.
中文例句: 我们把这个缺口标为垛口,把旁边的实心部分标为城垛。
Use it well: Name the gap rather than the whole wall. A photograph must show enough detail to distinguish this top-edge opening from a hole lower down.
Put the distinction to work
Practise the difference between identification and inference with a sketch. Label one feature you can actually see. Beside it, write the question that would establish its function. A dark line might be a structural member, a repair or decoration. A small doorway might be secondary, but the picture alone may not establish why it was used. Add an arrow to the part rather than circling the entire building; this forces your vocabulary to match the scale of your claim.

Chapter 7: Read ingredients and compare sweet foods
Entries 62–71. Back to contents
Food vocabulary becomes useful when it helps you ask a better question. Separate the name of a product, the material from which it is made, its texture and the method used to prepare it. Similar-looking brown coatings can have different ingredients. Related words can also behave differently across languages, so check a product description before relying on an English association.
62. carob
Say it: KAR-uhb
中文: 角豆 · jiǎo dòu
Meaning: The sweet pod pulp of the carob tree, used as a food ingredient and sometimes prepared as a cocoa substitute.
Example: I checked whether the brown coating contained carob or cocoa before describing its ingredients.
中文例句: 在描述配料之前,我先查看了褐色外层含的是角豆还是可可。
Use it well: Colour alone does not identify a food. This is broader ingredient vocabulary for comparing products, not a claim about a standard Nuremberg recipe.
63. wafer
Say it: WAY-fuh
中文: 薄脆饼片 · báo cuì bǐng piàn
Meaning: A very thin, usually crisp edible sheet or biscuit, sometimes used beneath or around a sweet.
Example: A thin wafer formed the base of the sample shown in our gingerbread photograph.
中文例句: 在我们的姜饼照片中,一片薄薄的饼片构成了样品的底层。
Use it well: Use this food sense rather than the electronic meaning. Describe the base separately from any thicker mixture or coating above it.
64. fondant
Say it: FON-duhnt
中文: 翻糖;软糖膏 · fān táng; ruǎn táng gāo
Meaning: A smooth sugar preparation made by working a cooked sugar mixture into fine crystals, used in sweets and some coverings.
Example: The baker’s diagram showed how working the cooled syrup produced smooth fondant.
中文例句: 烘焙师的图示说明了如何通过揉搅冷却的糖浆制成细腻的软糖膏。
Use it well: Do not use this word for every icing. Texture and preparation matter; a thin shiny glaze and a worked sugar paste are different descriptions.
65. lebkuchen
Say it: LAYP-koo-kuhn
中文: 德式香料姜饼 · dé shì xiāng liào jiāng bǐng
Meaning: A German spiced sweet bake commonly described in English as gingerbread, with recipes that may include nuts and honey.
Example: We compared two packets of lebkuchen by reading their ingredient lists rather than judging only the pictures.
中文例句: 我们通过阅读配料表比较了两包德式香料姜饼,而不是只看图片。
Use it well: This established loanword may be useful on packaging. English gingerbread is a broad translation and does not imply that every version has the same ingredients.
66. bratwurst
Say it: BRAT-wurst
中文: 德式煎烤香肠 · dé shì jiān kǎo xiāng cháng
Meaning: A German sausage intended for frying or grilling; regional versions vary in their ingredients and size.
Example: Before ordering bratwurst, the visitor asked which meat was used and how the dish was served.
中文例句: 点德式煎烤香肠前,游客询问了所用的肉类以及这道菜的上桌方式。
Use it well: The generic word does not establish the specifications of a protected local product. Ask about the particular item rather than assuming every version is identical.
67. macaroon
Say it: mak-uh-ROON
中文: 杏仁或椰丝小甜饼 · xìng rén huò yē sī xiǎo tián bǐng
Meaning: A small sweet bake commonly made with egg white and ground almonds or coconut.
Example: The label described the macaroon as coconut-based, so I did not call it an almond biscuit.
中文例句: 标签说明这块小甜饼以椰丝为主要原料,所以我没有把它称为杏仁饼干。
Use it well: Do not silently change the spelling to macaron. Those words are often confused, and recipes differ; the product description is your best starting point.
68. nougat
Say it: NOO-gah
中文: 牛轧糖 · niú gá táng
Meaning: A sweet preparation usually combining sugar or honey with nuts and often beaten egg white.
Example: The cut surface of the nougat showed nuts distributed through the pale mixture.
中文例句: 牛轧糖的切面显示,坚果分布在浅色的糖体中。
Use it well: English nougat often refers to this aerated sweet. German product labels may use Nougat for a different nut-and-chocolate preparation, so check the actual description.
69. molasses
Say it: muh-LAS-iz
中文: 糖蜜 · táng mì
Meaning: A thick dark syrup obtained during sugar manufacture, used for its sweetness and distinctive flavour.
Example: Our comparison recipe used molasses, while the packet we examined listed a different sweetener.
中文例句: 我们的比较食谱使用了糖蜜,而我们查看的包装列出了另一种甜味原料。
Use it well: The word normally takes singular grammar: molasses is thick. A dark colour does not prove that a baked product contains this particular syrup.
70. mace
Say it: MAYS
中文: 肉豆蔻衣 · ròu dòu kòu yī
Meaning: The aromatic dried covering around a nutmeg seed, used as a spice.
Example: The spice diagram placed mace around the seed, making its relationship to nutmeg clear.
中文例句: 香料示意图把肉豆蔻衣画在种子周围,清楚地说明了它与肉豆蔻的关系。
Use it well: This food sense differs from the ceremonial staff and weapon senses. Name the plant part when comparing spices rather than treating the two products as interchangeable.
71. comfit
Say it: KUM-fit
中文: 糖衣果仁或籽粒 · táng yī guǒ rén huò zǐ lì
Meaning: A nut, seed or small piece of fruit enclosed in a coating of sugar.
Example: The old recipe described a comfit with a seed at its centre and sugar around it.
中文例句: 这份旧食谱描述了一颗糖衣籽粒:中间是一粒种子,外面包着糖。
Use it well: This is useful when reading historical food descriptions. It names the coated item rather than loose sugar, and is not the same word as confit.
Put the distinction to work
Use a precise, courteous question: “Could you tell me what this coating is made from?” is more informative than “Is this the usual one?” If you are comparing packets for a writing task, record the actual ingredient wording before describing taste. A photograph may support observations about shape and colour; it cannot prove sweetness or texture. Where food restrictions matter, use the seller’s current information for the specific product rather than treating a vocabulary definition as an ingredient guarantee.

Chapter 8: Distinguish roles, evidence and decisions in a trial
Entries 72–82. Back to contents
A careful account separates the person accused, the official presenting a case, the deciding institution and the eventual outcome. These distinctions matter even in a short museum summary. Legal English also travels imperfectly between jurisdictions. Learn the general meaning, then check the rules of the particular proceeding rather than assuming that a familiar term carries identical consequences everywhere.
72. defendant
Say it: di-FEN-duhnt
中文: 被告 · bèi gào
Meaning: A person against whom a case is brought; in a criminal case, the person formally accused.
Example: The worksheet asked us to identify the defendant without assuming that the accusation had already been proved.
中文例句: 练习要求我们找出被告,但不能假定指控已经得到证实。
Use it well: The word identifies a procedural role, not a conclusion about guilt. Keep the accusation, the evidence and the court’s finding separate in your writing.
73. prosecutor
Say it: PROS-i-kyoo-tuh
中文: 检察官;公诉人 · jiǎn chá guān; gōng sù rén
Meaning: A legal official who brings or presents the case against someone accused of a crime.
Example: In the lesson transcript, the prosecutor explained how the documents related to the charge.
中文例句: 在课堂使用的庭审记录中,公诉人解释了这些文件与指控的关系。
Use it well: This person presents the prosecution’s case rather than deciding the verdict. Titles and powers vary across legal systems, so avoid importing one country’s job structure into another.
74. tribunal
Say it: try-BYOO-nuhl
中文: 审判机构 · shěn pàn jī gòu
Meaning: A court or formally constituted body authorised to hear and decide particular legal matters.
Example: Our timeline gave the tribunal its full name before using the abbreviation in later notes.
中文例句: 我们的时间线先写出审判机构的全称,之后的笔记才使用缩写。
Use it well: The term identifies the deciding institution. In historical writing, specify which tribunal you mean rather than merging separate proceedings into one undifferentiated trial.
75. conviction
Say it: kuhn-VIK-shuhn
中文: 定罪 · dìng zuì
Meaning: A formal finding that an accused person is guilty of a criminal offence.
Example: The student distinguished a conviction from the earlier allegation and from the punishment imposed later.
中文例句: 学生区分了定罪、先前的指控以及后来判处的刑罚。
Use it well: This legal sense differs from a firmly held belief. A person may speak with conviction without having a criminal conviction, so surrounding words matter.
76. sentence
Say it: SEN-tuhns
中文: 刑罚判决 · xíng fá pàn jué
Meaning: The punishment formally imposed by a court after a finding of criminal guilt.
Example: The summary recorded the sentence separately from the finding that the offence had been proved.
中文例句: 摘要把刑罚判决与犯罪事实已获证明的认定分别记录。
Use it well: Here sentence is a legal noun, not a unit of grammar. You can receive a sentence or be sentenced, but explain the particular historical procedure accurately.
77. appeal
Say it: uh-PEEL
中文: 上诉 · shàng sù
Meaning: A request for a higher authority to review a legal decision through an available procedure.
Example: Before writing that an appeal was possible, the student checked the rules of the particular tribunal.
中文例句: 在写下可以上诉之前,学生先查阅了该审判机构的具体规则。
Use it well: An appeal is not automatically available in every historical or modern proceeding. This entry teaches the general term without implying that one procedure applies everywhere.
78. due process
Say it: dyoo PROH-ses
中文: 正当法律程序 · zhèng dàng fǎ lǜ chéng xù
Meaning: Legal safeguards and fair procedures that authorities must follow when determining a person’s rights or liability.
Example: Our discussion of due process considered whether the accused had a meaningful chance to answer the case.
中文例句: 我们讨论正当法律程序时,考虑了被告是否真正有机会回应指控。
Use it well: The expression has technical meanings in particular legal systems. In general historical discussion, identify the safeguard you mean rather than using the phrase as unexplained praise.
79. subpoena
Say it: suh-PEE-nuh
中文: 传票 · chuán piào
Meaning: A legal command requiring a person to attend, give testimony or produce specified material.
Example: In our fictional case study, a subpoena required the witness to bring the relevant records.
中文例句: 在我们虚构的案例研究中,一份传票要求证人带来相关记录。
Use it well: This is stronger than an invitation or an informal request. Its form and operation depend on the jurisdiction; it is included for reading legal English, not legal advice.
80. exculpatory
Say it: ik-SKUL-puh-tuh-ree
中文: 有利于证明无罪的 · yǒu lì yú zhèng míng wú zuì de
Meaning: Tending to show that an accused person is not guilty or is less responsible for an alleged offence.
Example: The class considered whether the new document was exculpatory or merely unrelated to the allegation.
中文例句: 全班讨论了这份新文件是有利于证明无罪,还是仅仅与指控无关。
Use it well: Evidence need not prove complete innocence by itself to be described this way. Explain what allegation it weakens and how, rather than relying on the adjective alone.
81. admissibility
Say it: uhd-mis-uh-BIL-i-tee
中文: 证据可采性 · zhèng jù kě cǎi xìng
Meaning: Whether a court’s rules permit a particular item to be received and considered as evidence.
Example: The exercise separated the document’s admissibility from the question of how persuasive it actually was.
中文例句: 这道练习把文件的证据可采性与它实际上有多大说服力这两个问题分开。
Use it well: Being admitted does not make evidence automatically true or decisive. This term concerns the threshold for consideration; weight concerns the strength given to what is considered.
82. presumption of innocence
Say it: pri-ZUMP-shuhn uhv IN-uh-suhns
中文: 无罪推定 · wú zuì tuī dìng
Meaning: The principle that an accused person is treated as not guilty unless guilt is established through the required legal process.
Example: The exercise applied the presumption of innocence while still taking the allegations seriously.
中文例句: 练习在认真对待指控的同时,也贯彻了无罪推定原则。
Use it well: This principle concerns the position of the accused and the burden of establishing guilt. It does not require dismissing evidence or pretending that investigation is unnecessary.
Put the distinction to work
Make a sequence from allegation to evidence, finding and punishment. Check each sentence against that sequence. Does “was accused of” become “was convicted of” without any supporting information? Does a paragraph confuse an argument with a decision? Correct those slips before adding more detail. The purpose is not to weaken a documented conclusion. It is to state exactly what the record supports and to make clear who did what at each stage of the legal process.

Chapter 9: Discuss responsibility without collective blame
Entries 83–92. Back to contents
This chapter requires a quieter tone. Words about serious wrongdoing should clarify conduct and responsibility rather than become dramatic decoration. Distinguish an act from the mental element of an offence, and a person’s conduct from membership of a group. These are introductory reading tools. They are not a substitute for the precise law, judgment and historical evidence relevant to a specific case.
83. aggression
Say it: uh-GRESH-uhn
中文: 侵略 · qīn lüè
Meaning: In international affairs, the use of armed force by one state against another in violation of international law.
Example: The lesson used aggression in its international context, not merely to describe an angry tone.
中文例句: 这堂课在国际事务的语境中使用“侵略”一词,而不是仅仅形容愤怒的语气。
Use it well: The ordinary psychological meaning is broader. When discussing a legal accusation, use the applicable definition and evidence rather than treating every hostile act as legally equivalent.
84. complicity
Say it: kuhm-PLIS-i-tee
中文: 协助或参与不法行为 · xié zhù huò cān yù bù fǎ xíng wéi
Meaning: Involvement in wrongdoing through assistance or participation, even when someone does not personally perform every act.
Example: Our notes asked what evidence could establish complicity rather than treating mere proximity as proof.
中文例句: 我们的笔记追问什么证据能够证明参与不法行为,而不是把仅仅身处附近当作证明。
Use it well: Explain the action or assistance alleged. Legal standards vary; knowing a person, sharing a nationality or being present is not itself a complete account of responsibility.
85. deportation
Say it: dee-paw-TAY-shuhn
中文: 强制驱逐;强制迁移 · qiáng zhì qū zhú; qiáng zhì qiān yí
Meaning: The forced removal of people from a place or country by an authority.
Example: The history paragraph used deportation to describe forced removal, keeping the coercion clear.
中文例句: 历史段落用“强制驱逐”描述被迫离开,明确保留了其中的强制性质。
Use it well: In histories of Nazi persecution, specify the people, authority and destination when the source supports them. Do not soften forced removal into neutral language about ordinary travel.
86. atrocity
Say it: uh-TROS-i-tee
中文: 暴行 · bào xíng
Meaning: An extremely cruel or brutal act, especially one involving serious harm to people.
Example: We used atrocity carefully and named the documented act instead of adding sensational adjectives.
中文例句: 我们谨慎使用“暴行”一词,并指出有记录的行为,而没有添加耸人听闻的形容词。
Use it well: This is a morally serious description. It is not by itself the name of a single criminal charge, so distinguish descriptive language from a court’s formal legal categories.
87. individual responsibility
Say it: in-duh-VID-joo-uhl ri-spon-suh-BIL-i-tee
中文: 个人责任 · gè rén zé rèn
Meaning: Responsibility assigned to a person for that person’s conduct, rather than automatically to an entire population.
Example: The museum discussion focused on individual responsibility and rejected blame based only on nationality.
中文例句: 博物馆讨论聚焦个人责任,并反对仅依据国籍归责。
Use it well: In international criminal law, identify the person’s relevant acts and legal basis. The Nuremberg Principles address personal criminal responsibility; collective identity is not a substitute for proof.
88. command responsibility
Say it: kuh-MAHND ri-spon-suh-BIL-i-tee
中文: 指挥官责任 · zhǐ huī guān zé rèn
Meaning: A basis for holding a superior criminally responsible, under applicable conditions, for failing to prevent or punish crimes by subordinates.
Example: Our diagram connected command responsibility with authority, relevant knowledge and a failure to take required action.
中文例句: 我们的图示把指挥官责任与指挥权限、相关知情情况以及未采取必要行动联系起来。
Use it well: It is not automatic guilt merely for holding a senior rank. Specific legal requirements matter, and this responsibility differs from directly ordering a crime.
89. retroactivity
Say it: ret-roh-ak-TIV-i-tee
中文: 追溯适用 · zhuī sù shì yòng
Meaning: The application or effect of a rule in relation to events occurring before the rule took effect.
Example: We used a timeline to explain the question of retroactivity before discussing the competing arguments.
中文例句: 在讨论不同论点之前,我们用时间线解释了追溯适用的问题。
Use it well: Separate the date of conduct from the dates of a rule and a judgment. Naming the issue does not settle the legal argument about a particular historical case.
90. mitigation
Say it: mit-i-GAY-shuhn
中文: 减轻处罚的因素或作用 · jiǎn qīng chǔ fá de yīn sù huò zuò yòng
Meaning: Circumstances or arguments that may reduce the severity of a penalty without necessarily removing guilt.
Example: In the hypothetical judgment, mitigation affected the punishment but did not erase the finding of guilt.
中文例句: 在这份假设的判决中,减轻处罚的因素影响了刑罚,却没有消除有罪认定。
Use it well: Do not confuse a reason for a lesser sentence with proof that no offence occurred. State exactly what consequence an argument is intended to change.
91. mens rea
Say it: menz RAY-uh
中文: 犯罪的主观要件 · fàn zuì de zhǔ guān yào jiàn
Meaning: The mental element required for a particular offence, such as a legally specified intention or knowledge.
Example: The class asked what mens rea the offence required instead of assuming that every crime demanded the same intention.
中文例句: 全班询问该罪名要求什么主观要件,而没有假定所有犯罪都要求同一种故意。
Use it well: This established Latin legal expression complements actus reus. Requirements depend on the offence and legal system; ordinary regret or dislike is not an adequate definition.
92. actus reus
Say it: AK-tuhs RAY-uhs
中文: 犯罪的客观要件 · fàn zuì de kè guān yào jiàn
Meaning: The external element of an offence, such as prohibited conduct or a legally relevant failure to act.
Example: Our chart separated actus reus from the mental element so that the two questions would not blur together.
中文例句: 我们的图表把犯罪的客观要件与主观要件分开,以免混淆这两个问题。
Use it well: An omission can count when the law imposes a duty to act. This is an introductory reading distinction; the exact elements must be checked for the particular offence.
Put the distinction to work
When revising a historical paragraph, replace a vague collective subject with the supported actor: a named official, institution, unit or policy-maker where the source permits. Then state the action and its consequences without euphemism. Avoid making descendants or a whole nationality stand in for the people responsible. You can acknowledge uncertainty about a narrow question while being clear about established atrocities. Precision and moral seriousness reinforce each other when claims remain tied to evidence.

Chapter 10: Test a source and explain what it can show
Entries 93–100. Back to contents
The last chapter brings you back to reading itself. A caption, a quotation and a reconstructed display each offer information, but each also needs context. Ask how the material reached you, whether anything has been removed, and whether a name or date has been supplied by a later editor. The aim is disciplined curiosity, not suspicion without limits.
93. interrogate
Say it: in-TER-uh-gayt
中文: 仔细审问;深入质疑 · zǐ xì shěn wèn; shēn rù zhì yí
Meaning: To question someone closely, or critically examine a claim, source or assumption.
Example: The reader should interrogate the caption by asking who wrote it and what evidence supports it.
中文例句: 读者应深入质疑这段图注,追问是谁写的,以及有什么证据支持它。
Use it well: With a person as object, the word can suggest formal or intense questioning. With a source as object, it means testing the source critically, not rejecting it automatically.
94. misattribute
Say it: mis-uh-TRIB-yoot
中文: 错误归属 · cuò wù guī shǔ
Meaning: To assign a work, statement or action to the wrong person or origin.
Example: Copying an unsourced caption could cause us to misattribute the illustration to the wrong artist.
中文例句: 照抄没有来源的图注,可能使我们把这幅插图错误归属于另一位艺术家。
Use it well: State both the claimed maker and the evidence where possible. A later copy, a workshop product and an original work may require different attributions.
95. probative
Say it: PROH-buh-tiv
中文: 有证明力的 · yǒu zhèng míng lì de
Meaning: Having a tendency to help establish a fact relevant to an issue being considered.
Example: The date on the letter was probative because it helped place the writer at the location that week.
中文例句: 信上的日期有证明力,因为它有助于确定作者在那一周身处该地。
Use it well: Ask which fact the item helps establish. Something emotionally striking may have little probative value for the particular question, while an ordinary record may matter greatly.
96. redact
Say it: ri-DAKT
中文: 遮盖或删去敏感内容 · zhē gài huò shān qù mǐn gǎn nèi róng
Meaning: To remove or obscure selected information before a document is released or shared.
Example: For the classroom copy, we would redact private contact details while preserving the historical passage under discussion.
中文例句: 制作课堂副本时,我们会遮盖私人联系方式,同时保留正在讨论的历史段落。
Use it well: Make clear that information was withheld instead of silently rewriting the remaining text. Redaction changes what a reader can see, so it may limit interpretation.
97. expurgate
Say it: EK-spuh-gayt
中文: 删去被认为不宜的内容 · shān qù bèi rèn wéi bù yí de nèi róng
Meaning: To remove passages considered objectionable from a text, producing a cleaned-up or censored version.
Example: The editor’s decision to expurgate the passage changed what later readers could learn about the author’s views.
中文例句: 编辑删去这段被认为不宜的内容,改变了后来的读者能够了解到的作者观点。
Use it well: This often concerns offensive or objectionable material rather than private data. If studying an expurgated edition, identify the intervention instead of assuming that the author wrote every omission.
98. verbatim
Say it: vur-BAY-tim
中文: 逐字地 · zhú zì de
Meaning: Using exactly the same words as an original statement or text.
Example: I copied the short phrase verbatim and clearly marked where my own explanation began.
中文例句: 我逐字抄下了那个短语,并明确标出自己的解释从哪里开始。
Use it well: A translation can be faithful without being verbatim across languages. Use the word for exact wording, and do not silently correct or simplify a passage presented as an exact quotation.
99. palimpsest
Say it: PAL-imp-sest
中文: 重写本 · chóng xiě běn
Meaning: A writing surface reused after earlier writing was removed or covered, with traces of the earlier text sometimes remaining.
Example: The image of the palimpsest showed faint older letters beneath the later writing.
中文例句: 重写本的图像显示,后写的文字下面还有较早字迹的淡淡痕迹。
Use it well: Its metaphorical use describes accumulated layers, but start with the material meaning. Several visible scripts alone do not prove that a page was erased and reused.
100. rebuttal
Say it: ri-BUT-uhl
中文: 反驳 · fǎn bó
Meaning: An answer using reasons or evidence to challenge a particular argument or claim.
Example: Her rebuttal addressed the disputed date with a document rather than attacking the other student’s character.
中文例句: 她用一份文件回应了有争议的日期,作出反驳,而没有攻击另一位学生的人格。
Use it well: A useful rebuttal meets the actual claim. Restating your own position more loudly does not show where the other argument is mistaken or incomplete.
Put the distinction to work
End your research note with two statements: what the source helps establish and what it leaves unresolved. “This caption names the artist” is different from “This caption proves who made the object.” If you challenge an attribution, give a reason and identify the stronger evidence you would seek. Likewise, disagreement becomes a useful rebuttal only when it answers the point actually made. This habit helps in museum reading, classroom discussion and everyday online research.

Use the words in connected English
The following scenes are original teaching models. They demonstrate careful observation and explanation without claiming to report an actual visit or a specific historical verdict.
Model 1: An observation paragraph with a controlled inference
On the teaching table stood a rocking horse, a hand puppet and a small construction set. I grouped the objects by the way a child might use them. The horse suggested bodily movement, while the puppet invited a performance controlled from inside. The loose pieces of the construction set suggested assembly rather than a single fixed action. Those observations helped me compare the toys, but they did not tell me who had owned them or how often they were used. For that, I would need a label, a catalogue record or another reliable source.
Notice the division of labour in the paragraph. Object names establish what is being compared. Action words explain the comparison. The final two sentences mark the limit of the evidence. You can use the same pattern for tools, musical instruments or everyday objects without turning an imaginative possibility into a historical fact.
Model 2: Explain a layout problem
In my practice page, the title looked cramped even though the paragraph below it had plenty of space. I adjusted the kerning between the awkward letter pair rather than enlarging every gap. Then I checked the leading in the paragraph and left enough room near the gutter for comfortable reading. The changes had different purposes, so I described them separately. A page can become clearer through several small decisions; saying only that I “improved the design” would hide the work the reader needs to understand.
Now reverse the task. Give a partner your description without showing the page. Ask which changes they can picture and which remain unclear. Revise the vague sentence rather than adding another technical noun. Successful explanation allows someone else to reconstruct the important relationship.
Model 3: A respectful historical-reading reflection
Before reading the judgment summary, I identified the tribunal and the dates of the proceedings. I then separated the allegation, the evidence cited and the finding recorded. A statement by a prosecutor was part of a case being presented; it was not automatically the tribunal’s conclusion. Where the summary recorded a conviction, I used that precise term. Where it discussed mitigation, I asked how the argument related to the penalty. This sequence helped me read carefully without minimising the seriousness of the crimes under discussion.
This is a model of reading method, not a substitute summary of the Nuremberg proceedings. For a factual account, name your source and retain its distinctions among defendants, charges and outcomes. Do not invent a verdict for the sake of completing a tidy paragraph.
Model 4: Compare two food descriptions
The first packet described a wafer beneath the baked mixture, while the second highlighted a different form of coating. I wrote down those details before trying to compare the products. A familiar word such as nougat did not remove the need to read the ingredient list. Nor did the darker colour of one item prove that it contained molasses. My description therefore began with visible structure and printed information. Any comments about flavour would need to come from an actual tasting rather than from the photograph.
Try writing a second version for a younger reader. Keep the accurate distinctions, but explain any specialist word in a short phrase. A simpler sentence can still be precise; removing unsupported claims often improves both readability and accuracy.
A ten-minute retrieval routine
Choose three words from one chapter and close the definitions. Say each word, give its meaning in your own English, and create a new example. Open the guide to check the intended sense. If you used a vague substitute such as thing, improve the sentence by identifying the object or action. Finally, explain one difference between two related terms. That last step tests whether you can choose a word, not merely recognise it.
On the next day, change the context. Move a museum word into a classroom explanation, or move a layout word into a page you are designing. Keep a small correction list: the original sentence, the corrected version and the reason for the change. Review the reason alongside the word. This turns an error into a reusable decision rule rather than a mark to erase and forget.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need all 100 words for a first visit?
No. Choose a route that matches your interest and learn a small connected group. Toy words suit an object-description task; page and printing terms suit visual reading; the history chapters suit older readers ready for careful discussion. Understanding five useful distinctions is more valuable than forcing all one hundred words into a travel diary. Return to the index when a new object or question gives another word a purpose.
Are these words German phrases for ordering and directions?
They are English vocabulary for describing and understanding what you encounter. Lebkuchen and bratwurst are established loanwords, but most entries are English labels or specialist terms. The Chinese and pinyin support English learning; they are not a German phrasebook. For a real conversation, use clear ordinary language and ask the other person to explain an unfamiliar local term rather than guessing from a similar spelling.
Why are some terms associated with places beyond Nuremberg?
Comparison helps readers understand what is distinctive. A word such as burgage or cruck can help discuss another historical system or construction method, but must not be applied indiscriminately to Nuremberg. The usage notes flag those limits. Treat the city as a starting point for connected learning, while keeping claims about a specific building or institution tied to its own reliable documentation.
How should I use the Chinese example?
Read it after trying to understand the English sentence. Then check whether the same actor, action, qualification and degree of certainty appear in both. A translation should preserve a phrase such as may have or before ordering, rather than accidentally making the claim stronger. Finally, cover the English and rebuild a natural English sentence from the meaning, not by translating each Chinese word in sequence.
Can these legal definitions tell me how a real case will be decided?
No. They introduce distinctions useful for historical reading. Legal definitions, evidential rules and available procedures depend on the jurisdiction, period and offence. A word such as appeal must not be treated as proof that every tribunal offered an ordinary appeal. For a real legal question, use the governing law and qualified advice; for a history assignment, use the relevant record and identify your source.
What should I check before following a museum route?
Check the venue’s own current information for opening arrangements, closures, booking conditions and access. A building may have a long-established identity while a particular room is unavailable. Use the dated Courtroom 600 note above as an example of why this matters. The reading routes organise learning; they do not supply walking times, access guarantees or a complete itinerary.
How do I know whether my paragraph is genuinely better?
Ask a reader to point to the object, follow the process or identify the evidence from your words alone. If they cannot, adding another adjective is unlikely to solve the problem. Replace a vague noun, clarify who acted, explain the connection between two stages, or remove an unsupported inference. Vocabulary has done its job when the reader understands more accurately, not simply when the sentence sounds more elaborate.
