Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Reims
Notice the detail. Explain the connection.
Reims offers a useful meeting point between landscape, skilled work and public memory. A piece of pale rock opens a question about water. A vineyard invites you to distinguish a plant from a process. A doorway, a library book and a historical document each require a different kind of close reading. This guide turns those encounters into English you can use to describe what is there, explain how something works and ask a better question.
Reims is a city in north-eastern France; its Simplified Chinese name is 兰斯, Lánsī. This is an English vocabulary guide with Chinese support, not a French phrasebook. Several established specialist English terms were borrowed from French. Others are scientific, architectural or historical expressions that travel well beyond this city. The grape names identify real varieties, while the rest of the list gives you tools for understanding materials, processes, buildings and records.
The examples and classroom activities are original hypothetical situations, not reports of actual visits or identified objects in Reims collections. City facts are set out separately with sources. The wine-related vocabulary is educational: students can learn it through maps, photographs, diagrams and label reproductions without tasting alcohol or handling production equipment. The guide does not provide operating instructions. Choose the learning route that fits your interests and use a few connected words at a time.

How to use this guide
Begin with a question you can answer in two sentences. What does the word name: a material, a process, a structure, an object or a category? What other word might a reader confuse it with? Read the definition, inspect the example and then produce a new sentence that makes the distinction clear. Being able to explain a difference is more useful than recognising a term on a page.
The pronunciation cues use capital letters for the main stress and approximate an English reading. They are not full phonetic transcriptions, and accents vary, especially for French-derived technical terms. The Simplified Chinese gloss identifies the sense used here. Its tone-marked pinyin belongs to the Chinese phrase, not the English headword. Use both as meaning support, then practise the complete English sentence aloud.
The words are grouped by subject rather than ranked by difficulty. Start with the libraries and buildings route if you prefer visible objects. Choose ground and growth if you enjoy science. Pick processes if you want to explain sequence, or history if you want to read public memory carefully. You can move between routes without completing every entry in order.
Reims: useful context before the words
A city with connected royal monuments
UNESCO treats the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the former Abbey of Saint-Rémi and the Palace of Tau as a connected World Heritage property. Its account links these monuments with the French monarchy. That connection gives the ceremony and architecture vocabulary a clear setting, but it does not mean that every feature defined in this guide appears in each building. A labelled plan or an authoritative building account is still needed to identify a particular feature. UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
The ground beneath a working landscape
Comité Champagne describes a region with varied subsoils, including chalk, marl and other limestone, rather than a single uniform material. The ground-and-water group helps you read such descriptions carefully. A regional account can explain a pattern; it cannot replace a sample or a survey from a specific plot. Keep the scale of your evidence visible when moving from a regional map to a statement about one field. Comité Champagne.
A living industry with a changing vocabulary
The current Comité Champagne grape-variety page names Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier as the main varieties and also lists less widely planted ones. It records Chardonnay Rose among authorised varieties from 2025. The seven grape names taught below are therefore a selection, not an exhaustive current regulatory list. This is a useful reading habit: check whether a list claims to be complete before using it to contradict newer information. Comité Champagne.
A signature and the time it took effect
The French Ministry of the Armed Forces records the unconditional surrender signed at Reims on 7 May 1945, with the cessation of fighting set for the following day. Those are different moments. A clear historical sentence identifies whether its date concerns a signature, an order taking effect or a later commemoration, instead of treating all three as interchangeable. French Ministry of the Armed Forces.
A library can be both a building and a resource
Reims Libraries describes Carnegie as a study and research library with a mission to preserve and present written heritage. Its building opened in 1928 and is associated with Art Deco. That setting connects design vocabulary with the parts of a book. It also invites a practical question: are you looking at the design of a room, identifying a physical object, or searching for information held in a collection? Reims Libraries.
A market building invites a structural question
The City of Reims presents the Halles du Boulingrin among its Art Deco landmarks and dates its construction to 1927–1929. Use this as a starting point for asking how a large covered space is formed. The general thin-shell concrete entry explains a structural term; identifying the dimensions, reinforcement or repair history of a particular building requires its own technical evidence. City of Reims.

中文例句: 团队定时测量入渗速率,并注意到随着试验继续,水进入土壤的速度变慢了。
Explain the evidence before the conclusion
For a small science paragraph, use three steps: observation, comparison and question. First state what you can see in a photograph or supplied sample description. Then compare it with a second example using the same feature. Finally, identify what would require a measurement. A dark colour, for instance, is an observation; an exact chemical composition requires more than a colour judgment.
Practise with two imaginary soil reports. Underline every measurement and circle every material name. Check whether each number has a unit and whether the samples were taken at comparable depths. Your paragraph should make the comparison understandable even to a reader who has not seen the original table.

中文例句: 园丁在空闲菜畦种植绿肥,之后把植物材料归还土壤,作为土壤改良计划的一部分。
Keep a growth stage separate from a task
A plant can change without someone working on it, while a grower can intervene at a chosen stage. Use two columns in your notes: what the plant does and what people do. Add an actor to every sentence in the second column. This simple grammar check can reveal a conceptual error before it becomes part of a longer explanation.
For speaking practice, describe an imagined season using three observations, without assigning fixed calendar dates to every vineyard. Then add one question a grower might investigate. Local weather and growing conditions matter, so a classroom timeline should make its assumptions clear rather than presenting one schedule as universal.

Separate the name from the conclusion
A named variety tells you which plant is being discussed. It does not, by itself, establish every decision made later. Read a label or an article in layers: identify the product, identify the information actually stated, then list any question left unanswered. Resist filling an empty space with an attractive story simply because the place name is familiar.
Try an editing exercise with two fictional labels. One states a variety and the other does not. Write a sentence about each using only the available information. A strong answer can be short. Accurate restraint is a writing skill, and it often produces a clearer paragraph than an elaborate guess.

40. malic acid
Say it: MAL-ik AS-id · 中文: 苹果酸 · Pinyin: píngguǒsuān
Meaning: An organic acid found in many fruits, including grapes and apples; the name identifies a particular compound rather than acidity in general. PubChem,National Library of Medicine.

中文例句: 实验室报告将苹果酸与其他化合物分开列出,使研究人员能够比较不同日期所取样本中的苹果酸浓度。
Build a process paragraph that a reader can follow
Begin with a simple frame: material enters, an action occurs, and a result leaves. Repeat the frame only where a genuinely new stage begins. Then connect the stages with before, during and after. These words are useful because they tell a reader where one event belongs in relation to another.
Avoid changing the subject halfway through a sentence. If the first clause concerns juice, make it clear when the next clause concerns solid material or equipment. Read your explanation without the diagram. If a pronoun such as it could refer to two different things, replace it with the relevant noun.

Distinguish material, action and equipment
When a technical description feels crowded, sort its nouns by their job in the sentence. Which one names the thing being changed? Which names the action? Which names the equipment that performs it? You can then write a short active sentence with one clear relationship, rather than stacking several unfamiliar nouns together.
Use a demonstration video or a supplied diagram as evidence, and pause at one stage. Describe only that moment in plain language before introducing the specialist term. The aim is to make the term earn its place. A technical noun is useful when it makes your explanation more precise, not merely longer.

Read numbers and labels without mixing them
A capacity value needs its unit. A category name needs its context. In a comparison, state which question you are answering before introducing numbers: how much a container holds, what a label category means, or which material forms the closure. Combining all three in a single sentence often creates avoidable confusion.
Create a fictional label with three clearly separated information fields and exchange it with a partner. Ask the partner to explain only what the label establishes. If their answer goes further than your design permits, revise the wording or add the missing field. This is a useful exercise in both reading and communication design.

Describe a ceremony without assuming shared beliefs
A respectful museum description explains what an object is called and how it functions within the tradition being discussed. It does not require the reader to share that tradition. Keep the action, the participant and the object distinct, and use the historical context supplied by the collection rather than inventing a universal rule.
For a short speaking task, imagine introducing one ceremonial object to a classmate. Begin with its shape or position, add its name, then explain the role described by the source. End with a genuine question if the evidence leaves something unclear. Precision and respect can work together in the same simple sentence.

Make an architectural description easy to locate
Start with location: above a doorway, along a wall, or within a window opening. Next describe the feature’s shape and relationship to nearby parts. Introduce a specialist term only after you know which detail it identifies. This order helps a reader follow your description even if the term is new to them.
Try describing a supplied drawing without naming its style. A partner should be able to point to the feature you mean. Then add the term and check it against a reliable reference. A visible resemblance can suggest a question, but it does not automatically establish a date, a designer or a construction technique.

Write history with a clear timeline
Draw separate lines for events and evidence. On the first, record when something happened. On the second, record when a document was created, copied or interpreted. They may coincide, but they need not. A later recollection can be informative while still requiring a different kind of reading from a contemporary record.
In your paragraph, attach each date to an action. Say whether a document was signed, a change took effect or a museum opened. This habit prevents a familiar date from drifting into the wrong sentence. When two sources seem to disagree, first check whether they are actually dating the same event.

Describe a book as a physical object
A book has an intellectual identity and a physical form. When you describe a copy, separate its title and author from its binding, inserted material and signs of use. Two copies of the same work may have different physical histories. Begin with features you can locate, and keep any explanation of how they arose proportionate to the evidence.
Practise with a book you are allowed to handle. Find the relevant parts gently, then write three sentences that would help someone locate them without a photograph. With library or museum material, follow staff guidance: knowing a part’s name does not give you permission to touch, unfold or remove it.
Back to the word index · Continue to speaking practice
Speaking practice: ask a question that can be answered
Imagine you are looking at an exhibition diagram with a friend. Your friend says, “I understand the general idea, but I cannot tell which part this word names.” Point to the relevant feature and answer in two sentences: one identifying it and one explaining its relationship to another part. If you cannot locate it, say what extra view or label would help.
For the second turn, ask a precise follow-up: “Does this term name the material or the process?” “Which date refers to the signature?” “Is this information about the whole region or this particular site?” These questions are short enough for a real conversation and specific enough to move understanding forward. Finish by restating the answer in your own words so that a misunderstanding can be corrected immediately.
Writing practice: turn a visit into an explanation
Choose one theme and write a paragraph of about one hundred words. Begin with a question, introduce two or three relevant terms and explain how they connect. End with what you learned or what remains uncertain. Do not force ten new words into one paragraph: the relationships between a few well-chosen words should do the work.
A useful structure is: “At first, I thought… The diagram showed… The distinction matters because…” This gives your paragraph movement without inventing a dramatic event. In revision, underline each specialist term and ask whether a reader could infer its meaning from the surrounding sentence. Remove any word that sounds impressive but does not improve the explanation.
Finally, check scope. A statement about one display is not automatically a statement about every museum. A definition of a building feature does not prove that a named building contains it. A historical date needs a specific event attached to it. These checks make your writing both more convincing and easier to trust.
A worked example: read a field report
The field report included a soil profile showing layers below the surface. I first noticed the different colours, but colour alone could not answer every question. The soil texture data gave another kind of information by comparing the proportions of sand, silt and clay. A separate test recorded the infiltration rate, telling us how quickly water entered the surface during that test. Together, these observations made the report more useful, although they still described a particular site and set of conditions.
Why it works: The paragraph gives each term a different job: a view through layers, a description of particle proportions and a measured rate. It connects the evidence without pretending that one observation answers all three questions. The situation is hypothetical, so it makes no claim about a sampled Reims vineyard.

Remember the words by changing the task
Choose five terms from one route. On the first day, explain each with the definition hidden. Next, write a fresh sentence containing the term. On a later day, identify the term from a description that avoids its spelling. These are different tasks: success at recognising a word does not guarantee that you can retrieve and use it.
Keep an error log with three small fields: the word, the confusion and the corrected distinction. “I mixed up an action and a machine” is more useful than “I got it wrong.” The log should tell you what to practise next, not merely count mistakes. When a distinction becomes easy, test it in a different setting.
For a final challenge, pair one science term with one library or history term and explain how your reading method applies to both. You might compare the need for units in a measurement with the need for dates in a historical account. The subject changes, but the habit of matching a claim to its evidence remains useful.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to learn all one hundred words before a trip?
No. Pick a route and learn a small connected cluster. Practise one question, one explanation and one fresh sentence. You can use the word index during reading and return later for another group. The guide is designed for repeated visits rather than a single memorisation session.
Why does an English guide include French-derived words?
English specialist writing borrows established terms from other languages. The entries identify the English sense used here and give an approximate English pronunciation. A borrowed term can be useful, but it still needs context. This guide does not teach general French conversation or claim that English pronunciation is identical to French pronunciation.
Can younger learners use the vineyard and cellar sections?
Yes, as supervised educational reading about plants, materials, engineering and language. Use pictures, diagrams and fictional labels. There is no need to consume alcohol, visit an adult-only activity or handle pressurised bottles. Teachers and families can also choose the ground, architecture, history and library routes on their own.
Does every architectural term describe a Reims landmark?
No. The entries explain general concepts using hypothetical examples. The separately cited city context provides the Reims connection. To identify a feature in a particular building, use a reliable plan, collection description or technical account. The word list is a learning framework, not a surveyed inventory of monuments.
How should I use the Chinese and pinyin?
Use the Chinese gloss to check the intended sense, then return to the English sentence. The pinyin gives the pronunciation of that Chinese gloss. Technical translations sometimes vary by field or source, so compare the definition as well as the label. A familiar-looking translation should not replace understanding.
Sources and current planning checks
Before planning an interior visit
Planning note checked on 4 October 2026: the Palais du Tau official visitor page says it is closed for works until 2027. This guide does not imply that its interior is currently available to visit. Use the operator’s latest notice before arranging a visit, rather than treating a year alone as a confirmed reopening date. Centre des monuments nationaux.
The official Reims Museums page reports that the Musée de la Reddition reopened on 7 May 2026. It also carries a notice about an exceptional closure on 1 October 2026, a date already past when this guide was checked. For a planned visit, consult the current page for the specific day; neither an older renovation notice nor a past one-day closure establishes the present schedule. Reims Museums.
Sources were checked on 4 October 2026. The official local sources support the Reims context and dated planning notes. The scientific, technical, museum and library references support general vocabulary meanings. They do not establish that a hypothetical example occurred or that every defined feature is present in a named monument. Consult the relevant operator for current access, opening arrangements, admission and booking requirements.
