Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Salamanca turns a visit into a set of reading, speaking and noticing opportunities. Start with twenty genuine place and heritage names, then choose the specialist route that interests you: ideas, storytelling, language, old books, stone or regional food. This is a curated learning guide, not a claim that these are the hundred most frequent words a visitor will hear. You can enjoy a useful first session with five entries rather than trying to master the whole list.
A place name helps you ask where to go. A technical term helps you ask a better question when you arrive. The most valuable progress happens when you can explain the difference between two related ideas in ordinary English, then use the precise word without losing that explanation. Throughout the guide, observation comes before interpretation. What can you actually see or read? What has a reliable source established? What remains an interesting possibility?
Each entry includes a meaning, an approximate pronunciation cue, Simplified Chinese, tone-marked pinyin, an original English example, a Chinese translation and a usage note. Spanish cues generally approximate central Spanish pronunciation; TH represents the sound in English thin. Scala Coeli uses a labelled ecclesiastical Latin approximation. These cues are learning aids rather than phonetic transcriptions. Chinese names for lesser-known places and dishes are descriptive teaching labels, not assertions of official Chinese branding.
All example scenes and model paragraphs are invented for learning. They do not report a personal visit, a particular exhibition or a currently available activity. The later specialist chapters offer ways to explore questions prompted by the city; they do not imply that every technical concept originated here or appears on a visitor sign. Learn from permitted viewpoints and published images. Historic objects and stonework are never classroom test surfaces.

Before the words: Salamanca connections
A real university city
UNESCO’s Salamanca record places the city in western Spain and recognises the old city’s university-related heritage. It also describes a mixture of architectural periods. Let that variety guide your questions instead of assuming every impressive building belongs to one historical moment.
The 2026 anniversary, carefully dated
The university’s School of Salamanca anniversary page connects the 2026 commemoration with Francisco de Vitoria’s arrival in the theology chair in 1526. This explains the anniversary’s theme; it is not a promise that an event listed in an old announcement will still run on your travel date.
Why language and books belong in this guide
The university’s history of Spanish teaching recalls Nebrija’s publication of his Castilian grammar in Salamanca in 1492. Its Scripta account describes a manuscript exhibition associated with the 2018 anniversary. These are historical connections, not a claim that the earlier exhibition is currently open.
A material with a named origin
The IUGS description of Villamayor stone identifies it as a feldspar-bearing sandstone associated with Salamanca’s built heritage. Use that connection as an invitation to learn how rocks are described. A building’s colour alone cannot establish its quarry, mineral mixture or condition.
Check the actual visit
Consult the official tourism portal and the individual venue before setting times. Match the date, entrance, activity and accessibility requirements to your group. A general description of a historic building is not a booking confirmation. Keep a flexible alternative, especially if the visit you want involves stairs, worship spaces or research collections.
1. Find the university, books and literary places
Entries 1–10. Back to contents
Begin with names that will help your group stay coordinated. On a simple sketch map, give each chosen destination its own line and write a question beside it. You might want to understand a building, read about a writer or compare the mood of two places. Do not pack every name into one day. The task is to connect a clear purpose with a clear destination, leaving enough attention for the experience itself.

Put the distinction to work
Try a meeting-point exercise. One learner describes the destination without using its name; another checks whether the description identifies only one place. Then restore the proper name and refine the instructions. If two locations remain possible, your description needs another distinguishing feature. This small test makes vocabulary useful before anyone writes a long essay.

2. Separate buildings, routes, styles and materials
Entries 11–20. Back to contents
A travel plan can become confusing when the name of a building, the name of a visitor route and the name of a style all appear as if they were equivalent items. Sort this chapter into those different jobs. Ask which entries belong on a map, which identify a specific experience and which help describe something already in front of you. The categories are practical aids, not a test with one compulsory itinerary.

Put the distinction to work
Choose two entries from different categories and put them in one useful sentence. For example, say where you would look and what you would ask about, then stop before claiming an answer you have not verified. In a group, let one person check the name, another the location and another the scope of the proposed visit. Clear division of attention prevents avoidable misunderstandings.

3. Ask how an argument works
Entries 21–30. Back to contents
This chapter is for readers interested in the intellectual questions a university setting can prompt. You do not need to agree with a philosophical position in order to describe it accurately. Begin by writing the question under discussion. Next identify the position being offered, the reasons given and the point at which you remain unsure. Treat unfamiliar terms as handles for inquiry rather than badges of intelligence. A plain but faithful explanation is a strong starting point.

Meaning: A state of puzzlement or unresolved difficulty in inquiry; rhetorically, an expressed or performed uncertainty about how to proceed.

Use it well: A genuine impasse and a deliberate display of doubt are different uses; indicate which one your analysis describes.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Use the charitable-summary test. Before challenging a paragraph, rewrite its central claim in a way that someone who supports it could recognise. Then identify one assumption that needs examination. This is a proposed classroom routine, not a reconstruction of a particular historical lesson. Its purpose is to separate understanding an argument from immediately trying to win against it.

4. Read narrative from more than one direction
Entries 31–40. Back to contents
A story can be explored through its sequence, its access to knowledge and the changes it gives its characters. Choose one short invented scene for this chapter and keep the events simple. A student arrives, finds a message and decides what to do. You can then alter the telling while keeping most of the action unchanged. That controlled comparison makes it easier to explain what a narrative technique actually contributes.

Meaning: Describing an episodic narrative of a roguish, often low-status protagonist whose adventures expose the society through which they move.

中文例句: 我们的流浪汉小说式提纲描写一个机敏的局外人辗转于三个家庭,每个家庭都暴露出一种不同的虚伪。

Meaning: The roguish protagonist of a picaresque narrative, typically surviving through wit and expediency rather than secure social power.

中文: 自由间接引语 · zì yóu jiàn jiē yǐn yǔ
Meaning: Narration that blends a character’s phrasing or perspective with the narrator’s grammatical frame, without a direct quotation or reporting clause.
Example: Free indirect discourse shaped this line: She faced the locked door. How could they have forgotten her again?
中文例句: 自由间接引语塑造了这段文字:她面对着锁住的门。他们怎么又把她忘了?
Use it well: Look for a character’s evaluative voice inside narration; the absence of quotation marks alone is not enough to establish the technique.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Draw two lines on paper: one for events in their imagined order and one for the order in which you tell them. Add a third note identifying what the reader can know at each point. When revising the scene, change only one feature at a time. Describe the difference in a complete sentence before attaching a technical label.

5. Hear patterns in persuasive and literary language
Entries 41–50. Back to contents
Read the examples aloud before naming their devices. Notice where your voice pauses, what the sentence repeats and which contrast attracts your attention. The same pattern can create different effects in different settings, so avoid memorising a single ready-made effect for each term. A convincing analysis shows the relevant words and explains what they are doing in this passage. It does not simply announce that the writer makes the reader interested.
41. anaphora
Say it: uh-NAF-uh-ruh
中文: 首语反复 · shǒu yǔ fǎn fù
Meaning: The deliberate repetition of a word or phrase at the beginnings of successive clauses, sentences or lines.
Example: Her anaphora made the plan memorable: We would listen carefully, we would question politely, we would write honestly.
中文例句: 她的首语反复让计划便于记忆:我们会认真听,我们会礼貌地问,我们会诚实地写。
Use it well: Name the repeated opening and show its position; recurring words scattered throughout a paragraph need not form this pattern.
Reference: word sense
42. epiphora
Say it: eh-PIF-uh-ruh
中文: 尾语反复 · wěi yǔ fǎn fù
Meaning: The deliberate repetition of a word or phrase at the ends of successive clauses, sentences or lines.
Example: We heard epiphora in the appeal: Ask for evidence, look for evidence, and leave room for evidence.
中文例句: 我们在这段呼吁中听到了尾语反复:索要证据,寻找证据,并为证据留下空间。
Use it well: This rhetorical sense concerns repeated endings. The same word has a medical sense that is irrelevant to this reading exercise.

43. chiasmus
Say it: ky-AZ-muhs
中文: 交错配列 · jiāo cuò pèi liè
Meaning: A reversal of corresponding grammatical or conceptual elements in two balanced parts, producing a crossing pattern.
Example: The sentence used chiasmus: We shape our questions, and our questions shape us.
中文例句: 这句话运用了交错配列:我们塑造问题,问题也塑造我们。
Use it well: Map the two parts before naming the device. The reversal, rather than mere repetition or balance, is the useful feature.
Reference: word sense
44. zeugma
Say it: ZOOG-muh
中文: 轭式搭配 · è shì dā pèi
Meaning: A construction in which one word governs two others, often with a shift of meaning that creates compression or wit.
Example: His zeugma gave the departure a comic twist: She lost her map and her patience.
中文例句: 他的轭式搭配为出发的场景增添了诙谐意味:她丢了地图,也失去了耐心。
Use it well: Explain how the governing word works with each object; the effect often depends on the difference between the two relationships.
Reference: word sense
45. oxymoron
Say it: ok-see-MOR-on
中文: 矛盾修辞 · máo dùn xiū cí
Meaning: A compact expression joining apparently contradictory terms in order to suggest a complex or striking meaning.
Example: The phrase cheerful misery became an oxymoron when our narrator used it for the exhausting walk everyone secretly enjoyed.
中文例句: 当叙述者用“快乐的痛苦”形容那场让所有人暗自享受的疲惫步行时,这个短语便成了矛盾修辞。
Use it well: Show how the tension contributes meaning; two unusual neighbouring words are not automatically a deliberate contradiction.
Reference: word sense
46. paronomasia
Say it: par-uh-noh-MAY-zhuh
中文: 谐音双关 · xié yīn shuāng guān
Meaning: Wordplay that exploits similar sounds or different meanings of a word to create a pun or pointed connection.
Example: Our deliberately silly paronomasia read: The scholar had a novel reason to visit the bookshop.
中文例句: 我们故意写得滑稽的谐音双关是:那位学者有个“novel”的理由去书店,其中 novel 同时让人想到新奇与小说。
Use it well: A pun may resist direct translation. Explain the interacting senses rather than pretending that identical soundplay survives in another language.

47. asyndeton
Say it: uh-SIN-duh-ton
中文: 省略连词 · shěng lüè lián cí
Meaning: The intentional omission of conjunctions from a sequence of words, phrases or clauses that could otherwise be linked by them.
Example: Asyndeton quickened the notebook entry: Doors opened, footsteps echoed, voices rose, the room filled.
中文例句: 省略连词加快了笔记的节奏:门开了,脚步回响,声音升起,屋子坐满了。
Use it well: Discuss the actual rhythmic or rhetorical effect in context; removing conjunctions does not always make every passage faster.
Reference: word sense
48. polysyndeton
Say it: pol-ee-SIN-duh-ton
中文: 连词叠用 · lián cí dié yòng
Meaning: The deliberate use of repeated conjunctions where ordinary syntax would not require so many.
Example: The child’s polysyndeton conveyed excitement: We saw books and towers and carvings and a sky painted indoors.
中文例句: 孩子的连词叠用传达了兴奋:我们看到了书,还有塔楼,还有雕刻,还有画在室内的天空。
Use it well: Point to the repeated connector and its effect; ordinary grammatical coordination is not necessarily a conspicuous rhetorical pattern.
Reference: word sense
49. litotes
Say it: LY-tuh-teez
中文: 曲言法 · qū yán fǎ
Meaning: An understated assertion often made by denying its opposite, allowing a restrained expression to communicate a stronger evaluation.
Example: Calling the carefully argued essay not unconvincing was litotes rather than an outright statement of enthusiastic praise.
中文例句: 把那篇论证严密的文章称为“并非没有说服力”,使用的是曲言法,而不是直接表达热烈赞赏。
Use it well: Interpret the context and tone. A negative construction can be purely literal, so do not automatically read it as understated approval.
Reference: word sense
50. synecdoche
Say it: sih-NEK-duh-kee
中文: 提喻 · tí yù
Meaning: A figure in which a part represents the whole, the whole represents a part, or a related inclusive category substitutes for another.
Example: In our scene, the request for more hands used synecdoche because the organiser needed people to help.
中文例句: 在我们的场景中,“需要更多人手”的请求使用了提喻,因为组织者需要的是来帮忙的人。
Use it well: Identify the part–whole relationship precisely; not every association between two ideas works through inclusion in this way.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Write a neutral sentence about a visit, then create two patterned versions. Ask a partner which sounds more urgent, more playful or more reflective, and invite a reason. If the effect you intended does not appear, revise the wording rather than insisting that the label guarantees it. Keep the strongest version only if its meaning remains clear.

6. Listen to sounds and examine word forms
Entries 51–60. Back to contents
Some distinctions in this chapter are easier to hear than to see. Work slowly with a short spoken example, then compare it with the printed version. Avoid assuming that the number of letters tells you how many sounds, syllables or meaningful parts are present. If you are studying with a teacher, ask for a recorded model and repeat only the feature you are investigating. A small accurate contrast is more useful than a rushed imitation of an entire paragraph.
51. morpheme
Say it: MOR-feem
中文: 语素 · yǔ sù
Meaning: The smallest language unit carrying meaning or grammatical function, whether it can stand alone or must attach to another unit.
Example: The tutor treated the plural ending as a morpheme because it contributed number even though it could not stand alone.
中文例句: 老师把复数词尾视为语素,因为它虽然不能独立使用,却表达了数量上的语法意义。
Use it well: Meaning includes grammatical work, not only objects or actions; count units by function rather than by spaces in writing.
Reference: word sense
52. allomorph
Say it: AL-uh-morf
中文: 语素变体 · yǔ sù biàn tǐ
Meaning: One of the different forms through which the same morpheme is realised in different linguistic surroundings.
Example: We compared each allomorph of the English plural by listening to the endings of cats, dogs and buses.
中文例句: 我们通过听 cats、dogs 和 buses 的词尾,比较英语复数语素的各个变体。
Use it well: The grammatical contribution remains shared while the form varies; this differs from comparing unrelated endings with different meanings.
Reference: word sense
53. phoneme
Say it: FOH-neem
中文: 音位 · yīn wèi
Meaning: A contrastive sound unit in a particular language, capable of distinguishing one word from another within that language’s system.
Example: The change from pat to bat helped the class hear how replacing one phoneme could change a word.
中文例句: 从 pat 到 bat 的变化帮助全班听出,替换一个音位怎样改变一个词。
Use it well: Sound categories are language-specific. A distinction that changes words in one language may behave differently in another.
Reference: word sense
54. allophone
Say it: AL-uh-fohn
中文: 音位变体 · yīn wèi biàn tǐ
Meaning: A context-dependent or otherwise noncontrastive pronunciation variant belonging to a single phoneme in a given language.
Example: The teacher compared the puff of air in pin with the sound in spin as an allophone exercise.
中文例句: 老师把 pin 中伴随送气的声音与 spin 中的声音作比较,作为音位变体练习。
Use it well: Record the surrounding sounds and language under discussion; an audible difference does not automatically establish two separate phonemes.
Reference: word sense
55. diphthong
Say it: DIF-thong
中文: 双元音 · shuāng yuán yīn
Meaning: A vowel sound whose articulation moves between two vowel qualities within a single syllable.
Example: The diphthong in the English word day gave the learner a clear example of a vowel that moves.
中文例句: 英语单词 day 中的双元音,为学习者提供了一个元音发音位置发生移动的清晰例子。
Use it well: Count spoken syllables rather than written vowel letters; spelling alone cannot determine whether a sound sequence belongs to one syllable.
Reference: word sense
56. hiatus
Say it: hy-AY-tuhs
中文: 元音分属相邻音节 · yuán yīn fēn shǔ xiāng lín yīn jié
Meaning: In pronunciation, the meeting of neighbouring vowel sounds that remain in separate syllables rather than merging into one.
Example: The two syllables of Spanish día illustrated hiatus during our careful reading practice.
中文例句: 在我们的细读练习中,西班牙语 día 的两个音节说明了元音分属相邻音节的现象。
Use it well: This linguistic sense is narrower than an interruption in activity; use a spoken example to make the intended meaning clear.
Reference: word sense
57. elision
Say it: i-LIZH-uhn
中文: 省音 · shěng yīn
Meaning: The omission of a sound or syllable in pronunciation, sometimes reflected in shortened written forms.
Example: Elision explained why the rapidly spoken phrase sounded shorter than the learner expected from its printed version.
中文例句: 省音解释了为什么快速说出的短语,听起来比学习者根据印刷形式预想的更短。
Use it well: Describe what is omitted and in which speaking context; a spelling abbreviation does not necessarily reproduce an actual sound change.
Reference: word sense
58. synalepha
Say it: sin-uh-LEE-fuh
中文: 跨词元音合读 · kuà cí yuán yīn hé dú
Meaning: In verse, the joining of a word-final vowel with a following word-initial vowel into a single metrical syllable.
Example: The class marked synalepha between two neighbouring words before recounting the Spanish line’s metrical syllables.
中文例句: 全班先标出相邻两个词之间的跨词元音合读,再重新计算那句西班牙语诗的格律音节。
Use it well: This is a counting and pronunciation relationship across a word boundary; do not confuse it with the printed spacing of words.
Reference: word sense
59. apocope
Say it: uh-POK-uh-pee
中文: 词尾脱落 · cí wěi tuō luò
Meaning: The loss of a sound or syllable from the end of a word, including established shortened forms used in particular contexts.
Example: The change from bueno to buen before certain nouns provided a Spanish example of apocope.
中文例句: 在某些名词前由 bueno 变为 buen,为词尾脱落提供了一个西班牙语例子。
Use it well: Name the location of the loss: the end of the word. A general omission elsewhere requires a different description.
Reference: word sense
60. suppletion
Say it: suh-PLEE-shuhn
中文: 异干互补 · yì gàn hù bǔ
Meaning: The use of an unrelated or markedly different stem to supply a grammatical form within one word’s inflectional system.
Example: Went as the past tense of go made suppletion easier to understand than an abstract definition alone.
中文例句: 把 went 作为 go 的过去式来考察,比只看抽象定义更容易理解异干互补。
Use it well: The forms belong to one grammatical pattern despite their different stems; an ordinary sound change is a different relationship.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Make a two-column notebook: what I hear and what I see in writing. Use the columns to record a question, not to force an immediate answer. Where the evidence is uncertain, preserve the uncertainty. You can return later with a reliable pronunciation source or a teacher’s explanation instead of building a lasting memory around a guess.

7. Read an old book as evidence
Entries 61–70. Back to contents
Imagine working from a clear digital image of a manuscript rather than holding a precious original. Record what is visible before deciding why it is there. A mark may invite attention; a repeated sequence may suggest a copying problem; two witnesses may disagree. Each observation opens a question, but the next step is comparison. Keep your description of the image separate from your proposed account of how the text reached that form.
61. paratext
Say it: PAR-uh-tekst
中文: 副文本 · fù wén běn
Meaning: The framing material surrounding a main text, such as titles, prefaces and notes, that helps shape how readers approach it.
Example: The editor’s preface became useful paratext when we compared the expectations it created with the story that followed.
中文例句: 当我们把编者序言所建立的预期与随后的故事作比较时,它便成了有用的副文本。
Use it well: This is an analytical category for framing material; specify the particular element rather than treating every surrounding feature as equivalent.
Reference: word sense
62. collation
Say it: kuh-LAY-shuhn
中文: 文本校勘比对 · wén běn jiào kān bǐ duì
Meaning: In textual scholarship, the systematic comparison of copies or witnesses to identify where their wording differs.
Example: Our collation recorded a missing phrase in one copy before anyone proposed which reading should appear in the edition.
中文例句: 我们的文本校勘比对先记录了一个抄本中缺少的短语,然后才有人建议版本应采用哪种读法。
Use it well: Comparison records differences; deciding which reading to print is a further editorial judgment. Do not collapse those two tasks.
Reference: word sense
63. bifolium
Say it: by-FOH-lee-uhm
中文: 双联叶 · shuāng lián yè
Meaning: A sheet folded once to make two connected leaves, yielding four pages when both sides are used.
Example: The paper model showed how one bifolium could hold four pages while remaining a single folded sheet.
中文例句: 纸模型展示了一个双联叶怎样在仍是一张折叠纸的情况下包含四个页面。
Use it well: Count sheets, leaves and pages separately. This construction unit should not be confused with a single leaf or an entire book.
Reference: word sense
64. incipit
Say it: IN-sih-pit
中文: 篇首语 · piān shǒu yǔ
Meaning: The opening words of a text, often used to identify a work when titles are absent, variable or unhelpful.
Example: We copied the incipit into our notes so another reader could recognise which text the catalogue described.
中文例句: 我们把篇首语抄进笔记,以便另一位读者辨认目录描述的是哪一篇文本。
Use it well: Record the opening accurately rather than replacing it with your own summary; its identifying function depends on the actual words.
Reference: word sense
65. codicology
Say it: koh-dih-KOL-uh-jee
中文: 写本学 · xiě běn xué
Meaning: The study of manuscript books as physical objects, including their materials, construction, arrangement and evidence of manufacture or use.
Example: Codicology shifted our attention from the story’s meaning to the way the manuscript had been assembled.
中文例句: 写本学把我们的注意力从故事的含义转向写本的装配方式。
Use it well: It concerns the material book, whereas deciphering historical handwriting is a different specialised task; the two studies often inform each other.
Reference: word sense
66. stemmatics
Say it: steh-MAT-iks
中文: 文本谱系学 · wén běn pǔ xì xué
Meaning: The study of relationships among textual witnesses, often using shared readings and errors to propose a branching history of transmission.
Example: Our stemmatics exercise grouped two copies tentatively because they shared an unusual error absent from the others.
中文例句: 我们的文本谱系学练习暂时把两个抄本归为一组,因为它们共有一个其他抄本没有的罕见错误。
Use it well: A proposed family relationship is an inference from evidence, not proof that one surviving copy was directly copied from another.
Reference: word sense
67. manicule
Say it: MAN-ih-kyool
中文: 指示手形符号 · zhǐ shì shǒu xíng fú hào
Meaning: A small drawn or printed pointing hand used to direct a reader’s attention to a passage or feature.
Example: The manicule beside the paragraph made us ask who wanted a later reader to notice those words.
中文例句: 段落旁的指示手形符号让我们追问,是谁希望后来的读者注意那些文字。
Use it well: Describe the visible sign before guessing its maker or purpose; attention marks can come from different moments in a book’s history.
Reference: word sense
68. dittography
Say it: dih-TOG-ruh-fee
中文: 误重抄 · wù chóng chāo
Meaning: An accidental repetition during copying or writing, where a letter, word or longer passage appears more times than intended.
Example: We suspected dittography when the classroom copy repeated the same short phrase without a meaningful change of context.
中文例句: 当课堂抄本在语境没有实质变化的情况下重复同一个短语时,我们怀疑出现了误重抄。
Use it well: Repetition can be intentional, so compare witnesses and context before identifying a scribal error rather than a rhetorical choice.
Reference: word sense
69. haplography
Say it: hap-LOG-ruh-fee
中文: 误单抄 · wù dān chāo
Meaning: A copying error in which material that should be written twice is written only once, especially between similar neighbouring sequences.
Example: The missing repeated syllable suggested haplography when we compared the exercise copy with its supplied model.
中文例句: 把练习抄本与所给范本比较后,缺失的重复音节提示可能发生了误单抄。
Use it well: The defining contrast is one occurrence where two were required; it is more specific than a general omission or illegible word.
Reference: word sense
70. homoeoteleuton
Say it: hoh-mee-oh-teh-LOO-ton
中文: 同尾跳读 · tóng wěi tiào dú
Meaning: In textual criticism, a copying disturbance caused when the eye moves between matching or similar endings, potentially skipping or repeating intervening material.
Example: The identical line endings made homoeoteleuton a plausible explanation for the passage missing from our fictional manuscript.
中文例句: 相同的行尾使同尾跳读成为解释我们虚构写本中段落缺失的一种合理可能。
Use it well: Name the matching endings and the proposed eye movement. Similar-looking outcomes can arise from different copying mechanisms.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Create a tiny copying experiment with two versions of three original sentences. Introduce one deliberate change, then ask a partner to find and describe it without guessing your intention. Afterwards reveal what you did and compare the explanation with the evidence. This is a model of careful checking, not a claim that every historical error can be diagnosed from one difference.

8. Describe grains, layers and geological relationships
Entries 71–80. Back to contents
A stone surface can suggest questions about an entire material history, but the viewing scale limits your answer. Start with a labelled teaching image or a permitted museum display. Ask whether you are describing a particle, a group of particles or a relationship among layers. Do not transfer a property seen in one small sample automatically to every wall in the city. Precision includes knowing how far an observation can reasonably travel.
71. arkose
Say it: AR-kohs
中文: 长石砂岩 · cháng shí shā yán
Meaning: A sandstone notably rich in feldspar grains, a compositional category used when geologists describe and classify sedimentary rocks.
Example: The label arkose prompted us to ask about feldspar content rather than judge the specimen only by its colour.
中文例句: 长石砂岩这一标签促使我们询问长石含量,而不是只凭颜色判断标本。
Use it well: This names a particular compositional type, not all sandstone; a confident identification needs more evidence than a distant façade photograph.
Reference: word sense
72. lithic fragment
Say it: LITH-ik FRAG-muhnt
中文: 岩屑 · yán xiè
Meaning: A small piece of pre-existing rock preserved within sediment or another rock, retaining an aggregate rather than single-crystal character.
Example: Under the teaching microscope, the lithic fragment contained an internal texture unlike the neighbouring individual mineral grain.
中文例句: 在教学显微镜下,这粒岩屑具有内部结构,与旁边的单个矿物颗粒不同。
Use it well: A fragment may contain crystals of one mineral or several; the important contrast is a rock aggregate versus an individual grain.
Reference: word sense
73. cementation
Say it: see-men-TAY-shuhn
中文: 胶结作用 · jiāo jié zuò yòng
Meaning: The binding of sediment grains by mineral material deposited in their intervening spaces as loose sediment becomes rock.
Example: Our diagram of cementation showed mineral growth linking grains that had previously been separate.
中文例句: 我们的胶结作用示意图展示了矿物生长如何把原本分离的颗粒连接起来。
Use it well: This geological process is different from applying modern cement to a wall; both involve binding, but their materials and settings differ.
Reference: word sense
74. detrital
Say it: dih-TRY-tuhl
中文: 碎屑成因的 · suì xiè chéng yīn de
Meaning: Describing particles derived from the breakdown of pre-existing rock and carried or deposited as sediment.
Example: The report distinguished detrital grains inherited from earlier rocks from minerals formed later inside the sediment.
中文例句: 报告把从先前岩石继承而来的碎屑成因颗粒,与后来在沉积物内部形成的矿物区分开来。
Use it well: This adjective concerns origin. It does not by itself specify grain size, mineral composition or how far a particle travelled.
Reference: word sense
75. intergranular
Say it: in-ter-GRAN-yuh-ler
中文: 粒间的 · lì jiān de
Meaning: Located or occurring between the grains of a material, rather than inside the individual grains themselves.
Example: The enlarged drawing highlighted intergranular spaces so we could discuss the gaps separately from the solid particles.
中文例句: 放大的图突出显示了粒间空隙,以便我们把空隙与固体颗粒分开讨论。
Use it well: Attach the adjective to a clear noun, such as space or cement; it describes a relationship of position, not a material.
Reference: word sense
76. sphericity
Say it: sfeh-RIS-ih-tee
中文: 球度 · qiú dù
Meaning: The degree to which a particle’s overall three-dimensional form approaches that of a sphere.
Example: A long smooth pebble had low sphericity in our model even though its corners were no longer sharp.
中文例句: 在我们的模型中,一块细长而光滑的卵石虽然已没有尖锐棱角,球度仍然较低。
Use it well: Overall shape and corner smoothness are separate properties. A flattened or elongated particle can remain far from sphere-shaped after smoothing.
Reference: word sense
77. roundness
Say it: ROWND-nuhs
中文: 磨圆度 · mó yuán dù
Meaning: In sediment description, the degree to which a particle’s edges and corners have become smoothed rather than angular.
Example: We compared roundness by tracing the corners of two grain drawings while keeping their overall proportions similar.
中文例句: 我们保持两幅颗粒图的整体比例相近,通过描绘棱角来比较磨圆度。
Use it well: Use the geological sense explicitly: it concerns corners and edges, not whether the complete particle is shaped like a ball.
Reference: word sense
78. sorting
Say it: SOR-ting
中文: 分选程度 · fēn xuǎn chéng dù
Meaning: In sedimentology, the degree of uniformity of particle sizes within a sediment sample or sedimentary deposit.
Example: The sample with a narrow range of grain sizes showed better sorting than the mixture of large and tiny particles.
中文例句: 粒径范围较窄的样品,比大小颗粒混杂的样品表现出更好的分选程度。
Use it well: The technical noun describes a size distribution; it does not mean that someone manually arranged the grains or improved their quality.
Reference: word sense
79. bedding plane
Say it: BED-ing playn
中文: 层面 · céng miàn
Meaning: A surface separating successive layers or beds of sedimentary rock, recording a boundary within the deposited sequence.
Example: We traced the bedding plane across the photograph without confusing it with the later crack that cut through several layers.
中文例句: 我们沿着照片辨认层面,没有把它与后来切穿数个岩层的裂缝混淆。
Use it well: State whether you mean a layer or its boundary. A visible line may require closer geological evidence before you identify it.
Reference: word sense
80. cross-bedding
Say it: KROSS BED-ing
中文: 交错层理 · jiāo cuò céng lǐ
Meaning: An arrangement of inclined internal sedimentary layers that lie at an angle to the larger enclosing bedding surfaces.
Example: The teacher’s cross-bedding sketch placed sloping internal lines inside a larger bed with clearly marked upper and lower boundaries.
中文例句: 老师的交错层理草图把倾斜的内部线条画在一个较大的岩层内,并清楚标出上下边界。
Use it well: Look at relationships between scales of layering; any sloping rock surface is not automatically an example of this sedimentary structure.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Use separate sketches for overall particle form, corner shape and the range of sizes in a sample. Keep the drawings simple enough that the feature under comparison remains obvious. If a learner gives the right term but cannot explain which feature changed, return to the ordinary-language description. The drawing should support the word rather than serve as decoration.

9. Connect material evidence with conservation questions
Entries 81–90. Back to contents
This chapter moves beyond what an ordinary sightseeing photograph can establish. Some entries name measurable properties; others identify specific minerals or processes. Treat them as vocabulary for reading a report or asking an informed question. Do not treat a colourful surface, loose-looking edge or damp patch as a diagnosis. A careful description can be useful even when the cause remains unresolved, and a responsible visitor never damages a surface to satisfy curiosity.
81. petrography
Say it: peh-TROG-ruh-fee
中文: 岩相学 · yán xiàng xué
Meaning: The systematic description and classification of rocks from their composition and texture, commonly including microscopic examination.
Example: Petrography supplied a detailed description of the sample before the group debated the wider history of its formation.
中文例句: 岩相学先提供了样品的详细描述,之后小组才讨论其形成过程的更广泛历史。
Use it well: This descriptive branch is narrower than petrology as the wider study of rocks; explain what was observed and classified.
Reference: word sense
82. sorptivity
Say it: sorp-TIV-ih-tee
中文: 毛细吸水系数 · máo xì xī shuǐ xì shù
Meaning: A coefficient describing a porous material’s capacity for capillary liquid uptake, commonly determined from absorption over the square root of time.
Example: The laboratory compared sorptivity using prepared samples and a controlled test rather than splashing water onto the monument.
中文例句: 实验室利用制备好的样品和受控试验比较毛细吸水系数,而不是向古迹泼水。
Use it well: This is a measured material parameter, not a visual synonym for dampness; the liquid and test conditions matter.
Reference: word sense
83. hygroscopicity
Say it: hy-groh-skop-IS-ih-tee
中文: 吸湿性 · xī shī xìng
Meaning: The tendency of a substance or material to take up moisture from the surrounding atmosphere.
Example: The conservation discussion considered hygroscopicity when explaining why a material might gain moisture even without direct rain.
中文例句: 文物保护讨论在解释材料为何没有直接淋雨也可能吸收水分时,考虑了吸湿性。
Use it well: Distinguish atmospheric moisture uptake from the movement of liquid water through pores; both can matter, but they describe different relationships.

84. friability
Say it: fry-uh-BIL-ih-tee
中文: 易碎性 · yì suì xìng
Meaning: The tendency of a material to crumble or break down into small pieces or powder under relatively slight force.
Example: The conservator’s report discussed friability, while visitors were asked to observe the surface without touching it.
中文例句: 保护人员的报告讨论了易碎性,同时要求参观者只观察表面,不要触摸。
Use it well: It describes mechanical weakness, not the cause of that weakness. Never test a historic surface by rubbing or scratching it.

85. palygorskite
Say it: pal-ih-GOR-skyte
中文: 坡缕石 · pō lǚ shí
Meaning: A fibrous clay mineral containing magnesium and aluminium, relevant to some studies of the mineral cement in Villamayor sandstone.
Example: The study named palygorskite among the fine mineral components, a detail our ordinary street photograph could not establish.
中文例句: 研究把坡缕石列为细微矿物成分之一,而普通街景照片无法证实这一细节。
Use it well: Use the mineral name only when analytical evidence supports it; a fibrous appearance at ordinary viewing scale is insufficient.
Reference: word sense · additional support
86. subflorescence
Say it: sub-fluh-RES-uhns
中文: 表层下盐析 · biǎo céng xià yán xī
Meaning: The formation of salt crystals beneath a porous material’s surface, where crystallisation can contribute to internal disruption.
Example: The team investigated possible subflorescence because visible surface deposits alone could not explain the suspected damage beneath them.
中文例句: 团队调查了可能存在的表层下盐析,因为仅凭可见的表面沉积物,无法解释其下方疑似的损伤。
Use it well: The location is decisive: below the surface. Do not use this term interchangeably with visible salt growth on the outside.
Reference: word sense
87. kaolinite
Say it: KAY-uh-lih-nyte
中文: 高岭石 · gāo lǐng shí
Meaning: A specific aluminium-bearing clay mineral with a layered crystal structure, distinct from kaolin as a clay material or deposit.
Example: The analyst identified kaolinite in the mineral results rather than labelling the entire mixed sample as pure clay.
中文例句: 分析人员在矿物分析结果中识别出高岭石,而没有把整个混合样品标为纯黏土。
Use it well: The mineral species and the bulk material containing it are different levels of description; retain that distinction in your explanation.
Reference: word sense
88. smectite
Say it: SMEK-tyte
中文: 蒙皂石族 · méng zào shí zú
Meaning: A group of layered clay minerals whose structures can take in water between layers and commonly show swelling behaviour.
Example: The report discussed smectite as a mineral group before identifying which member the measurements could support.
中文例句: 报告先把蒙皂石族作为一个矿物族来讨论,再确定测量结果能够支持其中哪种成员的鉴定。
Use it well: Do not reduce the whole group to one familiar member; group identity and precise mineral identification answer different questions.
Reference: word sense
89. goethite
Say it: GUR-tite
中文: 针铁矿 · zhēn tiě kuàng
Meaning: An iron oxyhydroxide mineral, commonly associated with brown or yellowish colours in rocks, soils and weathering products.
Example: The laboratory’s identification of goethite was stronger evidence than our initial guess based on a brown stain.
中文例句: 实验室对针铁矿的鉴定,比我们最初根据一处褐色斑迹作出的猜测更有说服力。
Use it well: Colour can suggest a question but cannot alone confirm this mineral; different materials can create similar visual effects.
Reference: word sense
90. hematite
Say it: HEM-uh-tyte
中文: 赤铁矿 · chì tiě kuàng
Meaning: An iron oxide mineral with a different chemical composition from goethite, often associated with red pigment or reddish streaks.
Example: The diagram listed hematite and goethite separately so that similar-looking iron-rich materials would not become a single vague category.
中文例句: 图示把赤铁矿和针铁矿分开列出,避免把外观相似的富铁材料归入一个含糊类别。
Use it well: Keep the mineral identity separate from a general colour description; the word names a substance, not every red patch on stone.
Reference: word sense
Put the distinction to work
Practise three sentences in order: what the image shows, what explanation you are considering and what evidence would distinguish that explanation from another. Keep those sentences separate. If the second sentence quietly becomes more certain than the first allows, revise it. This is a useful habit in science writing and heritage discussion even when you never perform a laboratory test yourself.

10. Read the regional table with useful questions
Entries 91–100. Back to contents
Food vocabulary is most useful when it helps you describe or clarify an order. Learn the name, identify the broad kind of food and ask about the particular version being served. A regional dish can have several legitimate recipes. If an ingredient matters to you, do not rely on a photograph or a general description in a learning guide. Ask the maker or restaurant about the actual portion, filling, garnish and preparation.
91. montanera
Say it: mon-tah-NEH-rah
中文: 橡果放牧育肥期 · xiàng guǒ fàng mù yù féi qī
Meaning: The seasonal finishing period in Iberian pig rearing when animals range in wooded pasture and feed on acorns and other natural resources.
Example: The producer explained montanera as a stage in rearing the animals, so we placed it before curing on our timeline.
中文例句: 生产者把橡果放牧育肥期解释为饲养动物的一个阶段,因此我们在时间轴上把它放在腌制熟成之前。
Use it well: This names a husbandry period and practice, not a particular cut of meat or a guarantee that every Iberian product follows it.
Reference: word sense
92. cebo de campo
Say it: THEH-boh deh KAM-poh
中文: 户外饲料育肥类别 · hù wài sì liào yù féi lèi bié
Meaning: An Iberian pork production category involving outdoor rearing and feed-based fattening, with animals also able to use available field resources.
Example: The label cebo de campo made us ask about the feeding category separately from the animal’s breed percentage.
中文例句: 标签上的户外饲料育肥类别,让我们把饲养类别与动物的品种血统比例分开询问。
Use it well: Feeding and rearing categories answer a different question from breed information; read the complete label rather than relying on one attractive word.

93. hornazo
Say it: or-NAH-thoh
中文: 肉馅烤饼 · ròu xiàn kǎo bǐng
Meaning: A substantial savoury filled pastry associated with Salamanca, commonly containing pork loin, cured ham and chorizo, with egg in some versions.
Example: We asked whether this hornazo contained egg before choosing a portion to share after our walk.
中文例句: 我们在选一份肉馅烤饼散步后分享之前,先问了这种做法是否含蛋。
Use it well: Treat the regional name as a starting point for questions, since individual fillings and preparation choices can differ between makers.
Reference: word sense
94. farinato
Say it: fah-ree-NAH-toh
中文: 法里纳托面包猪脂肠 · fǎ lǐ nà tuō miàn bāo zhū zhī cháng
Meaning: A Salamanca-region sausage, especially associated with Ciudad Rodrigo, made principally with bread and pork fat, together with seasonings.
Example: Farinato sounded unfamiliar, so the traveller asked what it was made from rather than guessing from its appearance.
中文例句: 法里纳托面包猪脂肠听起来很陌生,所以旅人询问它的原料,而没有根据外观猜测。
Use it well: Its bread content is a useful distinguishing feature; do not assume that a sausage name always implies the same meat-to-filling balance.
Reference: word sense
95. chanfaina
Say it: chan-FY-nah
中文: 羊杂烩饭 · yáng zá huì fàn
Meaning: In its Salamanca form, a strongly flavoured dish combining rice with lamb offal and other ingredients, often including cooked blood.
Example: Before ordering chanfaina, Jia checked which offal appeared in the restaurant’s version and whether the serving was a small tapa.
中文例句: 点羊杂烩饭之前,佳确认了餐厅的做法使用哪些内脏,以及分量是否为小份下酒菜。
Use it well: The name is used for different dishes in different regions. State that you mean the Salamanca version when explaining it.
Reference: word sense
96. meneás
Say it: meh-neh-AHS
中文: 红椒蒜香土豆泥 · hóng jiāo suàn xiāng tǔ dòu ní
Meaning: A local shortened name for patatas meneadas: potatoes worked into a mash with garlic and paprika, commonly accompanied by pork.
Example: We ordered meneás after asking whether the kitchen could explain the topping as well as the potatoes underneath.
中文例句: 我们请厨房说明表面的配料以及下面的土豆后,点了红椒蒜香土豆泥。
Use it well: A dish centred on potatoes is not automatically vegetarian. Ask about the cooking fat and garnish if these affect your choice.
Reference: word sense
97. bollo maimón
Say it: BOH-yoh my-MON
中文: 马伊蒙环形海绵蛋糕 · mǎ yī méng huán xíng hǎi mián dàn gāo
Meaning: A traditional Salamanca-area ring-shaped sponge cake, made with eggs, sugar and starch flour, often finished with powdered sugar.
Example: A slice of bollo maimón gave our food notebook a new texture to describe beyond simply sweet.
中文例句: 一片马伊蒙环形海绵蛋糕让我们的美食笔记有了新的口感可写,而不只是说它甜。
Use it well: The traditional name identifies a kind of cake, not a complete allergen declaration; check the particular maker’s ingredients when necessary.
Reference: word sense
98. perrunillas
Say it: peh-rroo-NEE-yahs
中文: 佩鲁尼亚酥饼 · pèi lǔ ní yà sū bǐng
Meaning: Traditional crumbly sweet biscuits found in Salamanca and other Spanish regions, commonly made with flour, sugar, eggs and lard.
Example: The baker packed the perrunillas carefully, and we saved one unbroken biscuit for a drawing before sharing the rest.
中文例句: 面包师小心地包好佩鲁尼亚酥饼,我们留下一块完整的作画,然后分享其余的。
Use it well: Recipes vary, including almond versions; avoid turning one bakery’s ingredients into a universal definition of every biscuit sold under the name.

99. rosquillas de Ledesma
Say it: rohs-KEE-yahs deh leh-DES-mah
中文: 莱德斯马小环饼 · lái dé sī mǎ xiǎo huán bǐng
Meaning: Small, firm ring-shaped biscuits associated with Ledesma in Salamanca province, traditionally formed by hand and baked.
Example: The rosquillas de Ledesma were much smaller and firmer than the soft doughnuts our visitor had first imagined.
中文例句: 莱德斯马小环饼比那位游客最初想象的松软甜甜圈小得多,也硬得多。
Use it well: Rosquilla describes a ring form but does not guarantee a soft or fried product; this established local variety has its own texture.

100. limón serrano
Say it: lee-MON seh-RRAH-noh
中文: 山地柑橘咸味沙拉 · shān dì gān jú xián wèi shā lā
Meaning: A traditional salad from Salamanca’s mountain districts, combining citrus with variable savoury accompaniments such as cured meats and eggs.
Example: The menu’s limón serrano surprised us because the citrus appeared in a savoury dish rather than a dessert.
中文例句: 菜单上的山地柑橘咸味沙拉让我们惊讶,因为柑橘出现在咸味菜肴中,而不是甜点里。
Use it well: The name does not describe plain lemon. Ask about the local version, since ingredients and their preparation differ between recipes.

Put the distinction to work
Build a short exchange with a partner: name one dish, ask one specific question and respond to the answer with a decision. Then swap roles. Add an English description for someone who has never seen the food, using texture and ingredients only when you have evidence. There is no requirement to like or order every regional speciality in order to learn from it.

Use the words in connected English
The following scenes are original teaching models. They demonstrate careful observation and explanation without claiming to report an actual visit or a particular museum display.
Model paragraph: a thoughtful first visit
I would begin at the Escuelas Mayores with a question rather than a checklist. What would help me understand this building beyond its best-known photograph? Afterwards, I would leave a quiet interval for notes. At Casa Lis, I would choose one object to study closely instead of trying to describe everything. The strongest page in my notebook would contain a precise observation, the source of a fact and a question I could not yet answer. That would give me something meaningful to discuss when the day ended.
The paragraph uses conditional language because it describes a possible plan. Notice that choosing a destination does not require inventing opening hours, promising an exhibit or claiming that a particular route suits every visitor. Adapt the structure to your own interests and group, then verify the practical details separately.
Model paragraph: a story that controls information
The student arrived too early and waited outside the closed room. An analepsis returned briefly to the warning she had ignored that morning. Back at the door, she heard a familiar voice but could not make out the words. The focalisation kept the reader within her uncertain knowledge. When the door finally opened, the message in her hand no longer seemed reassuring. Limited information created tension.
After reading, underline the sentence that concerns time and the sentence that concerns access to knowledge. Then rewrite the scene so that the reader knows what is happening inside the room. Explain what your revision changes. You are testing an effect, not merely replacing one technical word with another.
Model paragraph: an honest material description
The photograph showed a pale wall and several darker patches. I could describe their positions, but I could not identify the minerals from colour alone. Petrography would require a more systematic examination of the material. Even a clear diagram would need its scale and source recorded before I used it as evidence. My revised caption therefore separated what the photograph showed from what I wanted to investigate. It became shorter, but it also became more trustworthy.
Use this paragraph as a revision model whenever a draft moves too quickly from appearance to cause. Circle verbs that claim certainty, such as proves or demonstrates, and ask what evidence each requires. Replace an unsupported conclusion with a well-framed question rather than covering the uncertainty with additional technical vocabulary.
Model paragraph: describing a food choice
The menu offered hornazo, but I wanted to know the filling before deciding. My companion chose a small portion to share, while I wrote down the answer to my question. Later, the rosquillas de Ledesma gave us a useful comparison with the softer sweets we already knew. Our food notes did not rank an entire region from one meal. They described what we had been told, what we noticed in that imagined serving and which question we would ask next time.
For your own paragraph, distinguish a general definition from your experience of one version. Write the name accurately, give enough description for a new reader and avoid claiming that every bakery or household prepares the dish in exactly the same way. If the scene is invented for schoolwork, identify it as a model.
A small retrieval routine for several days
Choose five entries from one chapter and write their headwords on separate cards. On the reverse, write a short explanation in your own English, then check it against the guide. Put the Chinese gloss underneath as a support rather than the first thing you read. The goal is to retrieve a usable meaning, not to repeat an entire dictionary sentence mechanically.
On the next study day, read an example and cover its headword. Try to recover the word, explain why it fits and suggest a different example. Later, mix those cards with five from another chapter. When you hesitate, note whether the difficulty is meaning, pronunciation or choosing between related terms. Give that difficulty a targeted exercise instead of restarting the whole list.
Finish with a short spoken explanation for someone who has not read the guide. Include two terms, one contrast and one honest uncertainty. Ask your listener which sentence was hardest to follow. Their answer tells you where an additional plain-language explanation would help. Accuracy and intelligibility matter more than the number of advanced words you manage to include.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a beginner phrasebook for ordering and buying tickets?
It is a place-based vocabulary guide with beginner-friendly names and more advanced specialist chapters. Start with the first two chapters and the food section if those meet your immediate needs. You do not need the literary or geological terms to enjoy a visit, and memorising the entire list is not a prerequisite for travelling.
Why are there technical words in a city guide?
They provide optional ways to turn a destination into a subject of study. Choose them when they help answer a real question that interests you. The guide does not suggest that every local resident uses these terms in daily conversation, or that a visitor should use advanced vocabulary where a simple question would work better.
How should I use the Chinese and pinyin?
Use the Chinese to establish the intended sense, then return to the English example. Read the pinyin when it helps you say the Chinese gloss, but do not use Chinese word order as a template for the English sentence. For places and foods, keep the original name available so that a descriptive translation does not obscure the destination or dish.
Can I reuse the model paragraphs in schoolwork?
Use their structure to understand how explanation works, then write an original response to your actual task. Keep invented scenes clearly labelled. A paragraph about a visit you did not make should not be presented as a personal travel report. If you use factual information from a source, follow your teacher’s expectations for acknowledging it.
What should I do when two definitions look similar?
Find the question each term answers and construct a small contrast. A useful comparison identifies both the shared ground and the decisive difference. If you still cannot explain the distinction in ordinary words, pause before using both terms in a paragraph. Ask for another example, draw a diagram or return to the relevant reference.
Are the visitor arrangements and recipes guaranteed?
No. Research was checked on 4 October 2026, but arrangements can change and recipes vary. The guide deliberately avoids presenting a permanent timetable or universal ingredient list. Use current venue information for a real visit and ask the provider about the actual food being served, especially where an ingredient or access requirement affects your decision.
