Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Utrecht brings English learning into a city of canal-side rooms, buried history, ringing bells and ingenious musical instruments. The aim is to help you notice more, ask clearer questions and turn an interesting visit into language you can use again.
Utrecht is in the Netherlands, an EU member state whose official EU language is Dutch. This is an English vocabulary guide with Simplified Chinese support. It is not a Dutch phrasebook. The local names are included because recognising a sign, searching a map and saying where you want to go are important parts of travel. European Union: the Netherlands.
Start with a scene you can picture. At a canal, notice the difference between the street above and the wharf below. At Dom Square, ask how visible buildings relate to evidence underground. At a musical museum, separate the source of energy from the instructions that choose the notes. At a concert, listen for a phrase and think about the character of its sound. These small distinctions give new words a practical job.
For Chinese-speaking learners: 中文释义帮助你准确理解意思,拼音帮助你朗读中文释义。英语例句展示词语怎样自然使用;中文译句帮助你核对整句意思。先理解场景,再试着不看答案说出英语。地名的中文写法有时只是便于理解的译名;查地图和订票时,请保留原文名称。
Pronunciation key: The cues are approximate reading aids, with the stressed syllable capitalised. English words generally follow British-English usage. Cues for Dutch names are deliberately approximate: sounds represented by “kh”, “uh” or “oo” cannot reproduce every Dutch vowel or consonant. Keep the written name on your phone and listen to local audio when available. Pinyin belongs to the Chinese explanation, not the Dutch name.
Visitor information checked: 3 October 2026. Examples are invented learning situations, not reports of an actual visit or promises of a particular exhibition. Confirm admission, accessibility, tour language, performance details and transport with the operator before travelling. A word describing a feature does not mean that every building or museum has that feature.

1–20 · Read the canals and the two-level city
Begin with where things are. A street, a wharf and a cellar can be close together while serving different purposes. Use these words to describe their relationship: above, below, beside, through and beneath. A quick sketch with three labelled levels is often more useful than memorising ten translations in isolation. Notice what you can actually see, and keep historical explanations separate from your own guesses.

21–40 · Look below Dom Square and listen above it
This group moves between evidence in the ground and sound in the tower. The first task is to explain how we know something about the past. The second is to describe what a bell system contains and does. Use verbs carefully: a researcher records a findspot, a frame supports a bell, a bellfounder casts metal and a carillonneur plays music. Precise verbs stop a paragraph becoming a list of attractive nouns.

41–62 · Discover how musical machines work
Musical machinery gives you a wonderfully concrete question: what makes the sound happen? Look for three different jobs. Something supplies energy; something stores or controls the sequence; something vibrates or moves to create sound. The parts vary between instruments. Your explanation should follow the actual demonstration rather than force every object into the same model. A musical clock, an organ and a small music box may solve similar problems in different ways.

63–82 · Enjoy performances and explain thoughtful design
Listening and looking improve when you can explain a choice. At a performance, you might compare the character of two sounds or explain why a seating arrangement helps an audience. When discussing a house, ask what a moving partition makes possible for the people inside. Start from the user’s experience, then connect it with the musical or architectural feature. This produces stronger English than repeatedly saying that everything is beautiful or interesting.
Explore the local context: TivoliVredenburg: its halls · Rietveld Schröder House: design and visitor information · Centraal Museum: art, design and city history.

83–100 · Recognise local places and make clearer decisions
Names help you find the right place; practical language helps you ask the right question once you have found it. Keep the station, the museum and the attraction’s individual programme distinct. A journey planner can help with transport, but a venue’s own information is usually needed for internal accessibility and the details of a guided visit. Choose a few places that suit your group rather than treating every name in this learning list as one day’s itinerary.
Explore the local context: NS: Utrecht Centraal station information · Discover Utrecht: the former main post office · Utrecht municipality: Catharijnesingel · Museum Catharijneconvent: visitor information · Sonnenborgh: museum and observatory · Railway Museum: official visitor site · Miffy Museum: official visitor site · Museum Speelklok: museum history.

Five city scenes that make the vocabulary memorable
These scenes are learning routes, not a timed itinerary. Choose one that matches your interests and the needs of your companions. The historical facts are drawn from the linked official sources; the questions and activities are suggestions for using the vocabulary. You can complete them through photographs and diagrams before travelling, then revise your explanation after seeing the place.
Scene 1 · Why does the canal have another street below?
The Oudegracht developed as a working canal with storage and trade beside the water. Its wharf cellars make the connection between transport and buildings unusually visible. The municipality explains how tunnels connected the quay directly with house cellars, then widened into storage spaces. Its account also distinguishes the Nieuwegracht, dug in 1391–1393 mainly for drainage and supplying nearby houses and monasteries, from the more trade-oriented Oudegracht. Utrecht municipality: how the wharves developed.
Try an explanation with a clear cause and effect: goods arrived by water; direct access reduced the need to carry them up and down; storage could connect with the working edge of the canal. Then label your own sketch with wharf cellar, lowered quay and cellar entrance. If you cannot see what lies behind a doorway, write “the entrance suggests” rather than claiming you inspected the entire room. This is useful English for describing a place honestly.
A passage can also help make the height difference understandable. The Ganzenmarkt tunnel connects the street with the Oudegracht wharves and forms part of the Utrecht Lumen light-art route. Its official description recalls carts travelling through the passage to the quay. You can use the location to practise “through”, “towards” and “below” without claiming that a present-day visitor route is identical to a historical freight route. Discover Utrecht: Ganzenmarkt tunnel.
Scene 2 · One square, several different kinds of evidence
Dom Square brings together the Dom Tower, Dom Church, DOMunder and the remains of Lofen Palace. The official visitor account connects the square with Roman origins and records Utrecht receiving city rights in 1122. DOMunder interprets evidence beneath the square; Lofen Palace introduces a different part of its medieval story. Avoid collapsing every old stone into the same period simply because the locations are close. Discover Utrecht: Dom Square and its historic places.
Choose one object or structural trace and ask three questions. Where was it found? What can be observed directly? What part of the explanation depends on interpretation? An archaeological layer describes a deposit; a findspot records a location; archaeological context connects the find with its surroundings. These terms work together, but they do different jobs. A useful notebook has separate spaces for the label’s statement, your observation and a question you still want answered.
The gap between church and tower has its own history. A severe storm in 1674 destroyed the church nave; the municipality explains that the remaining ruins were not cleared until 1826. The present open space therefore resulted from events and later decisions over time. A student can practise sequence words such as “first”, “afterwards” and “eventually” while resisting the tempting shortcut that everything changed completely on one day. Utrecht municipality: Dom Tower history.
Scene 3 · A tower is also a musical instrument
The Dom Tower story includes both construction and music. Utrecht’s municipal account records the Hemony brothers supplying bells for its carillon in 1664, followed by later changes to the instrument. It also describes the playing drum and the mechanism used to control musical sequences. This gives you a reason to distinguish a carillonneur performing from a system playing a prepared sequence. Check the actual event before assuming which one you are hearing. Utrecht municipality: the Hemony carillon.
Explain the chain in ordinary English before using technical terms. A support holds the bell. A striking part makes it vibrate. The listener hears a complex sound. Now decide where bell yoke, bell frame, ringing mechanism and strike note belong. The final term is especially useful because the perceived note and the individual frequencies in the sound are not a simple one-to-one relationship. Bell acoustics is a research topic as well as a visitor experience. IEEE IUS: research discussion of Dom Tower bell acoustics.
For an actual tower visit, consult the current operator information and ask about the route before committing your group. “Guided ascent” tells you that someone leads the climb; it does not tell you that stairs will suit every visitor. The Dom Tower’s official site provides staircase-tour and meeting-point information. An enjoyable visit begins with a practical decision that respects everyone’s needs. Dom Tower: visitor information.
Scene 4 · How does a machine remember a tune?
Museum Speelklok’s collections include self-playing musical instruments, and its educational material connects musical patterns with physical mechanisms. A small music box offers a particularly clear starting point: pins on a cylinder can pluck the tuned teeth of a metal comb. Other systems read perforated material. The details belong to each instrument, so ask how the particular example works instead of announcing that all musical machines use the same arrangement. Museum Speelklok: musical boxes; Museum Speelklok: technology and musical mechanisms.
Make a three-column explanation in your notebook: energy, instructions and sound. Place mainspring under energy only when it powers the example you are studying. Put a pinned cylinder or organ book under instructions when it controls the sequence. Under sound, identify what actually vibrates. Then use a linking sentence: “The mechanism moves the cylinder, and the pins trigger the notes.” This activity builds both technical vocabulary and the ability to explain a process to someone who has never seen it.
Keep maintenance in the story. Historical instruments need care if they are to keep functioning. The museum’s restoration publication discusses the specialist skills involved in maintaining its musical collection. Visitors should only operate a model or instrument when staff explicitly invite them to do so. Curiosity becomes more useful when it includes attention to how a fragile object is protected. Museum Speelklok: collection and restoration magazine.
Scene 5 · From hearing a room to reading a house
TivoliVredenburg describes several halls with different architectural characters. That makes it a useful setting for thinking about how a performance and its room interact. Read the hall name on your ticket; do not assume that one description covers the whole venue. For vocabulary practice, explain how seating, surfaces and distance from the stage might affect a visitor’s experience without pretending you measured the building’s acoustics. TivoliVredenburg: its halls.
The Rietveld Schröder House offers another kind of spatial question. Designed in 1924, it includes sliding walls that allowed the upper floor to change between a more open arrangement and separate rooms. The house’s own account explains the practical thinking behind these solutions. Describe what the partition does before giving a judgement about whether you like it: movement changes privacy, circulation and the way a family can use the same area. Rietveld Schröder House: design and visitor information.
Extend the comparison carefully. A concert hall may arrange people to share one performance; a home may need to bring people together at one time and separate them at another. Both require decisions about use, but their purposes differ. Write two sentences that use functional design and spatial arrangement accurately. A good comparison makes the shared question visible while preserving the different needs of each setting.

Two bilingual conversations to practise before a visit
These are practice conversations. The replies model clear communication and do not describe a venue’s guaranteed service, access arrangements or daily programme. Practise both roles, then change one detail: who is travelling, what they want to see or which question remains unanswered.
Conversation 1 · Choosing a suitable route at Dom Square
Visitor: We are meeting at Domplein. Could you help us find the starting point for our guided ascent?
游客:我们在主教堂广场集合。您能帮我们找到有导游带领的登高活动的起点吗?
Staff member: Let us check the booking details first. Which tour name and starting time are shown on your confirmation?
工作人员:我们先核对预订信息。确认单上写着什么导览名称和开始时间?
Visitor: I have the confirmation here. We would also like to ask about a step-free approach for a family member who is not joining the climb.
游客:确认单在这里。我们还想为一位不参加登高的家人询问无台阶的到达路线。
Staff member: We should check the meeting place and the waiting area separately. A route to the square does not tell us what is accessible inside each attraction.
工作人员:我们应分别核对集合地点和等候区域。能到达广场的路线,并不能说明每个景点内部有哪些无障碍设施。
Visitor: Thank you. After that, we hope to learn about a foundation remnant at DOMunder, if a suitable tour is available.
游客:谢谢。之后,如果有合适的导览,我们希望在 DOMunder 了解一处地基遗存。
Staff member: Check that attraction’s current tour information as well, including the language and route. Then your group can decide what suits everyone.
工作人员:也请查看那个景点当前的导览信息,包括语言和路线。这样,你们就能决定什么安排适合所有人。
What makes this conversation work? The visitor states a specific need, supplies the booking details and separates the approach from the interior route. The staff member checks rather than guesses. In your own role-play, a successful answer should leave you knowing what is confirmed and what still needs verification.
Conversation 2 · Asking how a musical instrument works
Learner: Is that an organ book, or is it a perforated music roll? They both seem to carry instructions.
学习者:那是风琴穿孔乐谱册,还是穿孔乐卷?它们似乎都承载指令。
Educator: Look at the material and the way it is arranged. A folded sequence of stiff panels is different from a continuous roll.
讲解员:看看材质和排列方式。由硬板页组成的折叠序列,与连续的卷材不同。
Learner: So the instructions choose the notes. Does the bellows provide the air that helps make the sound?
学习者:所以,指令决定音符。风箱是不是提供帮助发声的空气?
Educator: That is a useful question. Follow the demonstration and identify the air supply before explaining the whole mechanism.
讲解员:这是一个有用的问题。先跟着演示找出空气来源,再解释整个机构。
Learner: May I turn the winding handle on this model, or should I only watch?
学习者:我可以转动这个模型上的上弦手柄吗,还是只能观看?
Educator: Please wait until I show you which parts visitors may operate. We can then compare the model with the historical instrument.
讲解员:请先等我说明哪些部件允许参观者操作,然后我们可以把模型与历史乐器进行比较。
Language to borrow: “Is that … or …?” is useful for distinguishing two terms. “Does … provide …?” tests a proposed explanation. “May I …?” checks permission before touching anything. These questions remain useful in a science centre, a workshop or an art lesson, well beyond this particular city.

Make the words available when you need them
A manageable five-word learning cycle
Choose five words from one scene instead of trying to master the entire list at once. Read each meaning and say the word. Cover the English headword and reconstruct it from the Chinese meaning or a quick drawing. Then cover the example and make a different sentence of your own. Check whether your sentence uses the same sense of the word. A correct translation is a beginning; a correct new sentence shows that you can do more with it.
Return to those five words later with the order changed. Mix one place name, one object, one action and one explanatory phrase if you are ready for a harder task. Ask a partner to describe a situation without saying the headword. If you confuse two terms, write a short distinction rather than copying both definitions repeatedly. “The player is the carillonneur; the instrument is the carillon” is a useful repair because it addresses the exact confusion.
For a family activity, let each person select something different to explain. One person can describe a canal-level doorway, another can explain a musical pattern, and another can read the journey information. Keep the task short enough to preserve the enjoyment of the outing. You can discuss observations afterwards instead of turning every doorway and display into a test.
Retrieval questions: name the right term
- What is the precise location where an archaeological object was discovered?
- Which word names the musician who plays a set of tuned bells?
- What phrase describes the character that makes two equal-pitched instrument sounds different?
- Which object stores musical instructions in a connected sequence of folded, perforated card panels?
- What kind of partition moves aside to change the use of a room?
- Which phrase asks about reaching a place without steps while leaving internal access to be checked separately?
- Which Utrecht station name should you distinguish from the historic Maliebaan station?
- Which verb tells a cyclist to get off the bicycle?
Open the answer key after trying the questions
1. Findspot. 2. Carillonneur. 3. Timbre. 4. Organ book. 5. Sliding partition. 6. Step-free approach. 7. Utrecht Centraal. 8. Dismount.
Explanation questions: go beyond the label
Why is a wharf cellar more than an ordinary room beside a canal? A strong answer explains its relationship with the wharf, the higher street and storage access. It uses “below” or “beneath” accurately and avoids claiming that every room beside water has the same form.
How can a self-playing instrument depend on people? Mention design, preparation of the musical instructions, activation and maintenance. The phrase describes the way it plays; it does not erase the human work that makes the performance possible.
Why should a visitor ask which hall is named on a concert ticket? A venue can contain several halls. The exact hall and event information help identify the right performance and its arrangements. Do not invent a seating or access policy from the venue name alone.
How can a new example reveal that you have misunderstood a word? If you use findspot to mean any attractive place to visit, the sentence exposes a meaning error. If you use it for the recorded location of a discovery, the meaning remains controlled even when the surrounding story changes.
A simple self-check: Can you explain the word without immediately repeating its Chinese translation? Can you give a new example? Can you distinguish it from one neighbouring term? If one answer is difficult, return to a picture or a concrete scene and repair that specific connection. You do not need to restart the entire list.

A worked travel paragraph, then your own version
The following paragraph is an invented student composition. Its purpose is to demonstrate how observations, explanations and responsible visitor decisions can work together. It is not an itinerary or a claim that every activity can be completed in one day.
At the Oudegracht, I began by looking at the relationship between the street and the lowered quay. A cellar entrance below the street helped me understand why a wharf cellar was useful for storage near the water. Later, a diagram of a pinned cylinder gave me a different kind of connection to explain: the arrangement of pins controlled a sequence of musical notes. Both scenes rewarded patient observation. Before describing either one, I separated what I could see from what a guide or display had explained. I also learned to ask a practical question early. A step-free approach to a building does not tell me whether every room inside is accessible. Clear English helped me describe an interesting detail and make a better decision for the group.
Notice the paragraph’s movement. It begins with a visible relationship, explains why that relationship matters, introduces a second scene and ends with a useful decision. Its vocabulary does work inside the sentences. Removing “lowered quay” or “pinned cylinder” would remove an important detail rather than merely reduce the number of advanced words.
Your transfer task: Write 120–160 words about a real or imagined visit using six headwords from at least two sections. State clearly if the visit is imagined. Include one physical detail, one explanation and one question that a visitor would need answered. You may set the paragraph in Utrecht or transfer the general vocabulary to another place where the words genuinely apply. Keep Utrecht-specific proper names attached to their actual referents.
Review the draft in three passes. First check meaning: does every headword fit the situation? Next check evidence: are historical statements supported, and are guesses marked as guesses? Finally read it aloud for flow. If several sentences begin in exactly the same way, vary their structure by starting with a place, a reason or a question. The aim is an account another person can understand, not a demonstration that you can squeeze the largest possible number of terms into one paragraph.

Questions learners and visitors often ask
Is this a Dutch vocabulary list?
No. It teaches English words and phrases through Utrecht-related scenes, with Chinese meanings and examples to support learning. Local names such as Oudegracht and Domplein are labelled as proper names because recognising the actual place name is useful. General English words can transfer to other destinations, while a local name continues to identify its particular place.
Do I need all 100 words for a short visit?
Choose according to what you plan to do. A canal walk may make wharf cellar and lowered quay immediately useful. A musical visit gives you a reason to learn timbre or pinned cylinder. A learner can begin with five well-understood terms and add more after using them. Knowing how to ask a clear follow-up question is often more valuable than remembering a large list without context.
Are the Chinese place names suitable for booking?
Use the original spelling shown by the operator when searching or booking. Chinese renderings help explain what a place is, but different publications may transliterate a Dutch name differently. The original name, the address and the specific booking confirmation together give a more dependable way to identify the destination than a Chinese translation alone.
Can I use every technical word to describe an exhibit I see?
Only after checking that the feature is present. A flue pipe and a reed pipe produce sound differently; an organ book and a perforated music roll are different forms of musical instructions. Ask which system a particular instrument uses. If the label does not answer the question, say that you are unsure rather than supplying a confident but invented explanation.
What should I check before travelling with a mixed-age group?
Check the actual programme, route, language and access needs of the people travelling. The Miffy Museum identifies toddlers and preschoolers as its main audience, while other attractions have their own formats and requirements. A staircase visit, a seated performance and a museum visit can make very different demands. Build the plan around the people as well as the place names. Miffy Museum: official visitor site.
How can this list help with school English?
Use it to practise explanation, comparison and evidence. A paragraph about a musical mechanism needs sequence and cause. A comparison of two spaces needs clear criteria. An archaeological description needs careful distinctions between observation and interpretation. These are transferable writing habits. Ask a learner to explain one scene to someone who has never been there, then identify the one sentence that most improves the reader’s understanding.
