A vast seated figure can make scale easy to feel and difficult to describe. Leshan invites a closer question: what can a carved surface, a river setting and a conservation study each tell us?
This guide centres on the Leshan Giant Buddha and its river setting, with a separate route to Mount Emei. The two heritage components should not be treated as one short walk. These 100 selected expressions help you describe sculpture, materials and evidence.

The list uses simplified Chinese and standard Mandarin Hanyu Pinyin. Names and short descriptive phrases sit beside single words because each has a useful travel purpose. These expressions are learning aids, not a promise that every sign uses the same wording. Save the full Chinese destination name and verify its address on a current official map.

Pronunciation: listen to the whole expression
Lèshān begins with a falling tone: 乐 is lè in this place name. 大佛 is dà fó. 岷江 is Mínjiāng, with a rising tone on Mín. 弥勒 is Mílè in the name of Maitreya. 衣褶 is yī zhě for robe folds, while 砂岩 is shā yán for sandstone.
Tone marks show pitch: mā is high and level, má rises, mǎ is low and may dip then rise in isolation, and mà falls. An unmarked neutral syllable is lighter. Names generally retain dictionary tones; short ready-to-say phrases may mark common connected-speech changes, including 不 → bú before a fourth tone and changes to 一. The first of two third tones usually rises in speech. Practise a whole short expression, not just isolated sounds.
Five friendly questions to practise
| English question | Chinese writing | Hanyu Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the official map show the rivers meeting? | 官方地图在哪里标出河流交汇处? | guān fāng dì tú zài nǎ lǐ biāo chū hé liú jiāo huì chù ? |

| Is this surface mark identified in a conservation study? | 保护研究中辨认过这处表面痕迹吗? | bǎo hù yán jiū zhōng biàn rèn guò zhè chù biǎo miàn hén jì ma ? |

Choose the question that fits your situation, listen to the answer and ask for clarification when needed. A vocabulary list supports communication; it cannot confirm an ingredient, opening arrangement, transport route or permission on somebody else’s behalf.
A figure carved into a landscape
UNESCO describes the Leshan Giant Buddha as a hillside carving from the eighth century, overlooking a river confluence. It gives the statue’s height as 71 metres. The setting and the scale belong together in a clear description.
Use a reliable image with a known reference point. Describe the seated posture and the relationship to the cliff. Do not estimate the height of individual body parts from an unscaled photograph.

Material matters to conservation
Research identifies the Giant Buddha as a sandstone carving and studies how its exposed surfaces weather. A visible colour change or rough patch can begin a question; it does not establish a diagnosis.
Record the mark’s position and appearance, then distinguish that observation from a research explanation. If a paper discusses a mechanism, attribute it to the study and avoid applying it to every surface mark you see.
Heritage Science: weathering research on Leshan Giant Buddha
Water is part of the preservation question
A study of seepage at the statue’s chest examines water sources and the interaction of water with the rock. Its findings show why conservation requires monitoring and analysis as well as descriptions of historical design.
On a diagram, separate a drainage pathway from a seepage observation. Write one question about what is being monitored. Do not claim that the statue stays dry or that its drainage has solved all weathering problems.

A river view changes the evidence
The World Heritage description places the statue above a confluence of rivers. That wider setting can be easier to describe from a distant view, while a closer image may reveal carving details.
Compare two attributed images without pretending you visited both viewpoints. One paragraph can organise the setting; the other can examine a robe fold or surface. Check current operator arrangements before planning any boat-based viewing.
UNESCO: the statue’s river setting
Mount Emei is a separate heritage component
The World Heritage property’s name includes both Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha. UNESCO discusses religious history and natural features across the property. Its shared designation does not turn the two locations into one visitor route.
Find both locations on a map and write a separate destination note for each. In a temple account, distinguish religious meaning from an observable carving feature. Attribute an explanation of an image to the temple or a reliable historical source.
UNESCO: the combined World Heritage property
Turn one city moment into clearer English
Try an imagined sentence ladder: “The statue was enormous.” → “The seated statue filled the cliff face in the photograph.” → “In the official photograph, the seated figure dominated the cliff while the river below supplied a sense of its wider setting.” Each addition should make the relationship easier to picture.
Use eduKate’s Fencing Method to test each addition: what has it clarified, and does the evidence support it?
Compare “The stain proved the stone was damaged by rain” with “I noted a dark mark on the surface; a conservation study explains how water and rock interact at the monument.” The revised version separates an observation from a scientific explanation and avoids diagnosing a particular mark without evidence.
A real journal should distinguish what you observed from what a label or source explained. Mark an imagined account as imagined. The Trip to China writing guide helps you connect one incident into an account; the English 200-word bank supplies meanings and original examples for the English writing itself.
Before, during and after: a small learning plan
Before: choose ten words about sculpture and sandstone. During a visit or image study: record one carving detail and its viewpoint. After: write an 80–120-word account that names the source of one conservation fact; revise an unsupported cause and add a precise scale reference if available.
For parents, ask what the child noticed before supplying a new word. For teachers, ask learners to label an observation, a sourced explanation and an open question. At home, use an adult-selected photograph or official museum page. No purchase or overseas journey is required, and the task is not an exam or fluency guarantee.
Questions travellers often ask
Do I need to learn all 100 entries?
No. Choose ten that fit one scene. Use the shared essentials for basic exchanges and return to this list when your question becomes more specific.
Is this the local dialect?
No. The list uses standard Mandarin, including the Mandarin reading Lèshān. Local Sichuan varieties of Chinese may sound different. Hanyu Pinyin here does not transcribe those varieties.
Are all the entries single words?
No. The list includes single words, proper names and short contextual expressions. The English column identifies what each means; the Chinese and pinyin help you recognise or say it.
Can I use this guide from home?
Yes. Study a reliable photograph or official collection page, attribute the source and write a short account. Do not invent a personal journey when your evidence comes from a picture.
Can a close-up show the cause of every surface mark?
No. A photograph can record appearance. Identifying a deterioration mechanism may require material testing, monitoring and conservation research; attribute any diagnosis to its source.
