The list uses simplified Chinese and standard Mandarin Hanyu Pinyin. Names and short descriptive phrases sit beside single words because each has a useful travel purpose. These expressions are learning aids, not a promise that every sign uses the same wording. Save the full Chinese destination name and verify its address on a current official map.
1–10: Find Wenzhou and the wider region

Pronunciation: listen to the whole expression
瓯 in Ōu Jiāng and ōuxiù is a single high-level syllable beginning with a vowel. The first character in 乐清 is Yuè, not lè. 屿 is yǔ in Jiāngxīn Yǔ. Practise Yàndàng Shān as a complete place name. The readings here are standard Mandarin; they do not teach Wenzhou's local Wu speech.
Tone marks show pitch: mā is high and level, má rises, mǎ is low and may dip then rise in isolation, and mà falls. An unmarked neutral syllable is lighter. Names generally retain dictionary tones; short ready-to-say phrases may mark common connected-speech changes, including 不 → bú before a fourth tone and changes to 一. The first of two third tones usually rises in speech. Practise a whole short expression, not just isolated sounds.
Five friendly questions to practise
| English question | Chinese writing | Hanyu Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| Which landing serves Jiangxin Islet? | 去江心屿在哪个渡口上船? | Qù Jiāngxīn Yǔ zài nǎ ge dùkǒu shàng chuán? |
| Which stitch is used in this Ou embroidery? | 这幅瓯绣用了哪种针法? | Zhè fú ōuxiù yòng le nǎ zhǒng zhēnfǎ? |
| What material is used for this relief? | 这件瓯塑用的是什么材料? | Zhè jiàn ōusù yòng de shì shénme cáiliào? |
| What fish is used for these fish balls? | 这些鱼丸用的是什么鱼? | Zhèxiē yúwán yòng de shì shénme yú? |
| Which toppings come with this sticky rice? | 这碗糯米饭有哪些配料? | Zhè wǎn nuòmǐfàn yǒu nǎxiē pèiliào? |
Choose the question that fits your situation, listen to the answer and ask for clarification when needed. A vocabulary list supports communication; it cannot confirm an ingredient, opening arrangement, transport route or permission on somebody else’s behalf.
Jiangxin Islet and Wuma Street: two scenes, two questions
Wenzhou's official English information presents Jiangxin Islet and Wuma Street among the city's historical places to explore. They offer contrasting learning scenes: one begins with water and an island name, while the other begins with a street and its commercial activity. Pick one first and give yourself time to notice a detail.
In an island photograph, label the water, bank and visible buildings before adding a historical explanation. In a street photograph, copy a shop name accurately and ask what the business does. A poem or heritage caption can enrich either task when you identify its source. Your own observation should remain visible alongside that explanation.

Yandang Mountain: a shape can start a science question
Zhejiang's official account locates Yandang Mountain in the Yueqing area of Wenzhou and describes volcanic rocks, valleys, peaks, caves and waterfalls. That gives a learner several useful categories for reading a landscape. The wider mountain area is a separate destination whose current route and access arrangements need checking.
Compare two labelled photographs taken from different positions. Write how the silhouette changes, then use the source to explain the landform's geological context. 'The rock looked narrow from this angle' records an observation; a claim about how it formed needs evidence. Enjoy the comparison from permitted viewpoints or from home rather than approaching a closed edge for a better picture.

Ou embroidery: look for the work of the thread
Zhejiang's Wenzhou souvenir guide identifies Ou embroidery as a local intangible cultural heritage craft and gives an example of it incorporated into a contemporary product. This is a useful reminder that a traditional technique can appear in more than one object. Start with the specific work and maker named by your source.
Choose a small area: a feather, a leaf or a change in colour. Describe the thread direction and sheen that the photograph permits you to see. Ask about the stitch when a demonstrator or caption can answer. A lovely comparison is to place an embroidery image beside a painting and explain how the two create a similar shape through different materials.

Ou sculpture: a picture with depth
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism's cultural portal describes Wenzhou Ousu, or Ou sculpture, as a traditional oil-clay artwork with a raised, pictorial quality. This connects the word 'relief' to a concrete craft scene. It also helps distinguish this tradition from a stitched textile, even when both depict a landscape.
Sketch the outline of one raised feature and compare its depth with the background. A labelled demonstration can explain the modelling material and colour application. Record those stages in order rather than inventing a recipe for making the piece. Ask permission before photographing a maker at work and use the artist's name when your source supplies it.
Breakfast rice: separate the base from the topping
Wenzhou's official portal describes local sticky-rice servings with savoury toppings such as fried-dough pieces or seasoned minced pork, alongside sweet variations. These are useful possibilities for an ordering conversation. A particular stall can tell you which preparation it offers and which ingredients are included.
Use three short notes: rice base, topping and texture. Then build a sentence that explains their relationship. From a photograph, describe the visible arrangement and attribute preparation information to the source. If you try a serving, add your own sensory detail. This gives your paragraph an honest point of view while keeping the food conversation friendly and specific.

Turn one city moment into clearer English
Try an imagined Fencing sequence: 'I saw some art.' → 'I studied an embroidered bird.' → 'The embroidery used a change in thread colour to define the bird's feathers.' Add the maker's explanation if you have one, and mark it as attributed. Each addition should help the reader see the object or understand your evidence.
Use eduKate’s Fencing Method to test each addition: what has it clarified, and does the evidence support it?
For a Singapore connection, compare two labelled craft objects or breakfast photographs. Follow the material and preparation in each selected example. Two dishes can both use sticky rice while arranging toppings differently; two pictures can depict birds while using different techniques. Keep the comparison anchored to the examples you actually studied.
A real journal should distinguish what you observed from what a label or source explained. Mark an imagined account as imagined. The Trip to China writing guide helps you connect one incident into an account; the English 200-word bank supplies meanings and original examples for the English writing itself.
Before, during and after: a small learning plan
Before reading, choose five craft or landscape expressions and recall their meanings. During a visit or image study, sketch one detail and record one source. Afterwards, write 80–120 words with three selected English expressions, an attributed explanation and a question. Read it aloud and replace one vague adjective with a visible shape, material or action.
For parents, ask what the child noticed before supplying a new word. For teachers, ask learners to label an observation, a sourced explanation and an open question. At home, use an adult-selected photograph or official museum page. No purchase or overseas journey is required, and the task is not an exam or fluency guarantee.
Questions travellers often ask
Do I need to learn all 100 entries?
No. Choose ten that fit one scene. Use the shared essentials for basic exchanges and return to this list when your question becomes more specific.
Is this the local dialect?
No. This is standard Mandarin pinyin. Wenzhou has local Wu speech varieties, and these Mandarin readings are not a transcription of them. Ask a local speaker if learning a local pronunciation is your aim.
Are all the entries single words?
No. The list includes single words, proper names and short contextual expressions. The English column identifies what each means; the Chinese and pinyin help you recognise or say it.
Can I use this guide from home?
Yes. Study a reliable photograph or official collection page, attribute the source and write a short account. Do not invent a personal journey when your evidence comes from a picture.
Does Wenzhou here mean only the city centre?
The guide also names destinations in the wider Wenzhou region, including the Yueqing and Yongjia areas. Use complete destination names and current maps when planning a journey between them.
