A journey can give a word a place to live in your memory. You remember the question you asked, the name you tried to pronounce or the moment a confusing explanation began to make sense. This Göttingen vocabulary guide is designed for that kind of learning: 100 carefully explained words and names, arranged so that an interested visitor, parent or student can choose a manageable route rather than study everything at once.
Start with the city and its people if you are preparing a visit. Continue into mathematical language if a biography or a book raises a question you want to explore. Choose the language chapter to think about German words, or use the woodland chapters to practise careful observation. The advanced sections are optional reading extensions. You can use them at home before or after travelling; they are not a promise that a museum currently displays every topic covered here.
Each entry gives an approximate pronunciation cue, a Chinese meaning with pinyin, an English explanation, an original example and a Chinese translation. The final note helps you use the word with an appropriate degree of precision. Capital letters in the pronunciation cues mark a stressed syllable. These cues are practical approximations rather than phonetic transcriptions. Chinese supports meaning; its pinyin reads the Chinese label and does not teach the pronunciation of the English or German headword.

Before the words: Göttingen connections
A university city as a starting point
Göttingen’s official tourism information presents a city closely connected with university life, science and culture. Forum Wissen is the university’s museum devoted to how knowledge is made and shared. These connections provide the setting for the learning routes below.

Read achievement alongside access
The university’s history includes the protest of the Göttingen Seven in 1837. Emmy Noether’s biography also records the barriers to her career and the loss of her position in 1933. These histories deserve attention alongside accounts of intellectual achievement.

Make a plan you can verify
Research and visitor information were checked on 4 October 2026. Before travelling, open the relevant official venue page again and check your date, opening arrangements, booking requirements and accessibility needs. For an event, check the event itself rather than relying on a building’s general opening hours. Keep a second choice that would still make the day worthwhile if a room, programme or path is unavailable. No current ticket price or guaranteed admission is assumed in this guide.
Carry a small observation task
Choose something you can accomplish without special access: recognise a name, read one label, compare two explanations or write three accurate sentences about an exterior. If you visit woodland, follow the current signs and restrictions. Leave plants, wood and research equipment undisturbed. An excellent travel notebook does not need an unusual discovery. It needs a clear distinction between what you observed, what a reliable source explained and what you still want to find out.
1. Places and names for a thoughtful visit
Entries 1–10. Back to contents
Begin by making the place name useful. Say it aloud, find it on the relevant official page and write one sentence explaining why you might visit. Keep the name connected to a purpose: a question about a building, an object or the city’s history. A longer list of stops does not necessarily make a better learning day. Choose enough time to notice a detail and leave room for a change of plan.
1. Göttingen
Say it: GUET-ing-en; round your lips for ö
中文: 哥廷根 · gē tíng gēn
Meaning: A German university city whose cultural life is closely connected with scientific and scholarly work.
Example: Our Göttingen plan leaves time for one question that we cannot answer before arriving.
中文例句: 我们的哥廷根(Göttingen)行程留出时间,探究一个出发前还无法回答的问题。
Use it well: Keep the umlaut when writing the name carefully; Goettingen is a practical substitute. Begin a travel paragraph by identifying what you want to understand, then choose a place that might help you investigate it.
Word reference: Göttingen Tourism
2. Forum Wissen
Say it: FOR-oom VIS-en
中文: 知识论坛博物馆 · zhī shi lùn tán bó wù guǎn
Meaning: The University of Göttingen’s museum exploring how knowledge is produced, discussed and shared.
Example: At Forum Wissen, our imagined student group asks how an object became evidence.
中文例句: 在知识论坛博物馆(Forum Wissen),这组假设的学生提出问题:一件物品怎样成为证据?
Use it well: The name belongs to a particular museum. Prepare a question about a method, a person or a collection rather than expecting every scientific term in this guide to appear in an exhibition.
Word reference: Forum Wissen, University of Göttingen
3. Gänseliesel
Say it: GEN-zuh-lee-zel
中文: 鹅姑娘像 · é gū niang xiàng
Meaning: The goose-girl fountain figure associated with Göttingen’s market square; the outdoor figure is a replica of the original.
Example: “Is this Gänseliesel the original figure or a later copy?” asked the visitor.
中文例句: “这座鹅姑娘像(Gänseliesel)是原作还是后来的复制品?”游客问道。
Use it well: Ask about an object’s identity before describing its history. A familiar landmark can have several versions, and your photograph alone may not establish which version you saw. Observe from an appropriate public position.
Word reference: Göttingen Tourism
4. Göttingen Old Botanical Garden
Say it: GUET-ing-en ohld buh-TAN-i-kul GAR-den
中文: 哥廷根老植物园 · gē tíng gēn lǎo zhí wù yuán
Meaning: The university’s historic botanical garden, established in 1736 and still occupying its original location.
Example: Before entering Göttingen Old Botanical Garden, we checked which visitor areas were available that day.
中文例句: 进入哥廷根老植物园(Göttingen Old Botanical Garden)前,我们查明当天哪些参观区域开放。
Use it well: Use the full name when distinguishing this garden from other university gardens. Choose one plant label to read slowly. Record its wording separately from your own impressions, and leave collecting or handling plants to authorised staff.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
5. Göttingen City Museum
Say it: GUET-ing-en SIT-ee myoo-ZEE-um
中文: 哥廷根市立博物馆 · gē tíng gēn shì lì bó wù guǎn
Meaning: The municipal museum concerned with Göttingen’s history and its relationship with the city’s communities.
Example: The Göttingen City Museum website was our starting point for checking the afternoon’s options.
中文例句: 哥廷根市立博物馆(Göttingen City Museum)的网站是我们查询下午活动安排的起点。
Use it well: Its German name is Städtisches Museum Göttingen. A museum’s general purpose and today’s available displays are different kinds of information. Check the current programme before promising a companion that a particular object will be visible.
Word reference: Göttingen City Museum
6. Göttingen Historical Observatory
Say it: GUET-ing-en his-TOR-i-kul ub-ZUR-vuh-tree
中文: 哥廷根历史天文台 · gē tíng gēn lì shǐ tiān wén tái
Meaning: The historic university observatory built between 1803 and 1816, associated with Gauss’s work and residence.
Example: Our paragraph about Göttingen Historical Observatory began with a question about the relationship between buildings and measurement.
中文例句: 我们关于哥廷根历史天文台(Göttingen Historical Observatory)的段落,以建筑与测量之间的关系为问题开篇。
Use it well: A historic scientific building may have present-day institutional uses. Check visitor arrangements separately. In a description, explain which architectural feature interests you without assuming that you can enter a working room or handle an instrument.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
7. Paulinerkirche
Say it: pow-LEE-ner-kir-khuh
中文: 保利纳教堂 · bǎo lì nà jiào táng
Meaning: The former Dominican church incorporated into Göttingen’s university library complex and used for events.
Example: We checked whether a public event would allow us to see the Paulinerkirche during our stay.
中文例句: 我们查询是否有公开活动,让我们在停留期间参观保利纳教堂(Paulinerkirche)。
Use it well: Retain the German name when searching official information. Distinguish a building’s former religious role from its later library use. The opening hours of a larger complex do not necessarily promise unrestricted access to every room.
Word reference: Göttingen State and University Library
8. Bismarckhäuschen
Say it: BIS-mark-hoys-khen
中文: 俾斯麦小屋 · bǐ sī mài xiǎo wū
Meaning: The former defensive tower where Otto von Bismarck lived for part of 1833 as a Göttingen student.
Example: “Let us identify the Bismarckhäuschen first, then check the history behind its name,” said Mei.
中文例句: “我们先辨认俾斯麦小屋(Bismarckhäuschen),再查名字背后的历史,”美说道。
Use it well: The diminutive ending suggests a small house, but the building’s earlier defensive function also matters. Write a sequence with before and later so that successive uses remain clear. A commemorative name is a starting point for inquiry.
Word reference: Göttingen Tourism
9. Göttingen Seven
Say it: GUET-ing-en SEV-en
中文: 哥廷根七君子 · gē tíng gēn qī jūn zǐ
Meaning: The seven professors dismissed after protesting the Hanoverian king’s revocation of the constitution in 1837.
Example: Reading about the Göttingen Seven prompted Arun to ask what the professors were defending.
中文例句: 阅读哥廷根七君子(Göttingen Seven)的事迹后,阿伦想知道这些教授当时在捍卫什么。
Use it well: Treat this as a named historical group. Include the dispute and its consequences when explaining it; a list of famous names alone does little to clarify the event. Attribute interpretations to a source rather than inventing private motives.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
10. Göttingen City Forest
Say it: GUET-ing-en SIT-ee FOR-ist
中文: 哥廷根城市森林 · gē tíng gēn chéng shì sēn lín
Meaning: The municipal woodland associated with Göttingen, part of which lies within a designated nature reserve with Kerstlingeröder Feld.
Example: For Göttingen City Forest, we planned a short observation walk and checked the official restrictions first.
中文例句: 对于哥廷根城市森林(Göttingen City Forest),我们计划一次简短的观察步行,并先查询官方限制。
Use it well: Use a current map and follow signs at the site. The forest chapters offer language for noticing and asking questions; they do not establish the presence of a particular species or authorise leaving paths, collecting material or taking samples.
Word reference: Lower Saxony conservation authority
Put the distinction to work
Choose two of the destinations in this chapter. For each, write a question that can be checked before leaving and another that you would like to investigate during the visit. Separate an intention from a confirmation. “We hope to see the room” is a sensible plan; “The room is open for our booked visit” requires actual evidence. Finish by naming a worthwhile alternative that does not depend on the same access arrangements.
Example planning answer: “We will check the current visitor page before choosing a time. If the interior is unavailable, we can study the exterior and read the institution’s account of its history.”

2. People behind the questions
Entries 11–20. Back to contents
A name in a travel guide is most useful when it leads to a question. Try asking what the person studied, what problem they worked on and what opportunities or obstacles shaped their career. Resist the pressure to learn a whole biography immediately. A precise sentence about one documented contribution is a stronger beginning than a paragraph filled with unexplained praise. Keep dates only when they help the reader understand a sequence or a consequence.
11. Carl Friedrich Gauss
Say it: karl FREE-drikh gowss
中文: 卡尔·弗里德里希·高斯 · kǎ ěr fú lǐ dé lǐ xī gāo sī
Meaning: A mathematician, astronomer and physicist who directed Göttingen’s university observatory and worked across several scientific fields.
Example: Carl Friedrich Gauss became the focus of our comparison between a short biography and a building description.
中文例句: 卡尔·弗里德里希·高斯(Carl Friedrich Gauss)成为我们比较简短传记与建筑介绍时的重点。
Use it well: German sources commonly write Gauß. When you meet either spelling, check the dates and context before assuming two people are involved. Choose a specific contribution for a paragraph instead of relying on an impressive but unexplained reputation.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
12. Bernhard Riemann
Say it: BERN-hart REE-mahn
中文: 伯恩哈德·黎曼 · bó ēn hā dé lí màn
Meaning: The Göttingen mathematician whose work introduced influential ideas in geometry and in the study of prime numbers.
Example: A reading about Bernhard Riemann encouraged us to ask what a mathematical space can mean.
中文例句: 一篇关于伯恩哈德·黎曼(Bernhard Riemann)的文章,让我们思考数学空间可以具有什么含义。
Use it well: Use a biography to locate a question within a person’s work. You can acknowledge that an idea is difficult while describing its broad subject accurately. Separate the person’s name from terms later formed from that name.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
13. David Hilbert
Say it: DAH-vit HIL-bert
中文: 大卫·希尔伯特 · dà wèi xī ěr bó tè
Meaning: A mathematician who taught in Göttingen and presented a famous set of mathematical problems in 1900.
Example: Our David Hilbert note asks why a well-chosen question can guide research for many years.
中文例句: 我们的“大卫·希尔伯特(David Hilbert)”笔记提出:为什么一个精心选择的问题能引导多年的研究?
Use it well: A research problem may be valuable before anyone solves it. Try explaining the difference between stating a problem clearly and claiming a solution. Avoid presenting every problem associated with a famous scholar as already settled.
Word reference: University of Göttingen, Robert Schaback
14. Emmy Noether
Say it: EM-ee NUR-ter; German ö is rounded
中文: 埃米·诺特 · āi mǐ nuò tè
Meaning: A mathematician who worked in Göttingen and helped shape modern abstract algebra, despite barriers to her academic career.
Example: The biography of Emmy Noether led our group to discuss both mathematical achievement and unequal opportunities.
中文例句: 埃米·诺特(Emmy Noether)的传记,引导我们同时讨论数学成就与不平等的机会。
Use it well: Her teaching permission was removed in 1933 under Nazi rule. Give this exclusion clear historical language rather than hiding it behind a vague career change. When writing, distinguish documented institutional actions from your own response to them.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
15. Felix Klein
Say it: FAY-liks kline
中文: 费利克斯·克莱因 · fèi lì kè sī kè lái yīn
Meaning: A Göttingen mathematician influential in geometry, the organisation of mathematical research and mathematics education.
Example: Felix Klein gave our group a way to connect advanced research with the question of how mathematics is taught.
中文例句: 费利克斯·克莱因(Felix Klein)让我们把高深研究与数学教学方式联系起来。
Use it well: A scholar’s contribution can include teaching and institution-building as well as published results. Select one role at a time when composing a sentence. This helps readers understand what the person actually did instead of receiving a string of honours.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
16. Max Born
Say it: maks born
中文: 马克斯·玻恩 · mǎ kè sī bō ēn
Meaning: A physicist associated with Göttingen whose statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics was recognised by the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Example: Learning about Max Born helped us understand why a scientific prediction may concern probabilities.
中文例句: 了解马克斯·玻恩(Max Born),帮助我们理解科学预测为什么有时涉及概率。
Use it well: Born’s career extended beyond Göttingen. If you mention an award, separate the work being honoured from the institution where its recipient was based at the award date. A concise biography benefits from a clear timeline.
Word reference: Nobel Prize Outreach
17. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
Say it: gay-ork KRIS-tof LIKH-ten-berk
中文: 格奥尔格·克里斯托夫·利希滕贝格 · gé ào ěr gé kè lǐ sī tuō fū lì xī téng bèi gé
Meaning: A Göttingen scholar known for experimental physics and for his literary aphorisms and satire.
Example: Georg Christoph Lichtenberg interested Jia because careful observation and sharp writing seemed to meet in one career.
中文例句: 格奥尔格·克里斯托夫·利希滕贝格(Georg Christoph Lichtenberg)吸引了佳,因为细致观察与敏锐写作似乎在同一段生涯中相遇。
Use it well: Introduce the full name once, then use the surname. Keep quotations exact and attributed if you use them in your own work; a memorable sentence circulating online may not have a trustworthy source.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
18. Jacob Grimm
Say it: YAH-kop grim
中文: 雅各布·格林 · yǎ gè bù gé lín
Meaning: A German scholar and Göttingen professor whose work included language research and collaboration with his brother Wilhelm.
Example: Jacob Grimm became our starting point for exploring how languages change over time.
中文例句: 雅各布·格林(Jacob Grimm)成为我们探究语言如何随时间变化的起点。
Use it well: Use the first name when distinguishing the brothers. Their shared projects should not make every individual contribution interchangeable. Ask which person a source names and whether it describes joint authorship, separate research or a later interpretation.
Word reference: University of Göttingen
19. Wilhelm Grimm
Say it: VIL-helm grim
中文: 威廉·格林 · wēi lián gé lín
Meaning: The scholar who collaborated with Jacob Grimm on fairy-tale collections and the German dictionary project.
Example: For Wilhelm Grimm, our notebook records a shared project and a question about the work behind it.
中文例句: 对于威廉·格林(Wilhelm Grimm),我们的笔记记录了一项合作项目,以及一个有关幕后工作的疑问。
Use it well: Collecting, editing and publishing are different activities. When discussing a story collection, choose the verb supported by the source. This gives a more accurate account than treating every printed tale as an entirely new invention by its editors.
Word reference: GRIMMWELT Kassel
20. Dorothea Schlözer
Say it: dor-oh-TAY-ah SHLUR-tser; ö is rounded
中文: 多萝特娅·施勒策 · duō luó tè yà shī lè cè
Meaning: The Göttingen-born scholar who received a doctorate in philosophy from the university in 1787.
Example: Dorothea Schlözer prompted us to ask how an exceptional achievement related to ordinary access to education.
中文例句: 多萝特娅·施勒策(Dorothea Schlözer)让我们思考:一项非凡成就,与一般人接受教育的机会有什么关系?
Use it well: One person’s success does not by itself establish equal opportunities for a whole society. In historical writing, ask who could usually study, what conditions applied and which dates your evidence actually covers.
Word reference: frauenORTE Niedersachsen
Put the distinction to work
Pick one person and prepare a three-sentence introduction. The first identifies the person and field; the second states a checked connection with the city; the third gives your own question. Read the sentences again and mark which are factual and which express your response. If you use words such as first, greatest or only, pause and ask whether the source actually supports the comparison you are making.
Example reflection: “I can describe one documented part of this person’s work. I still want to understand what made the question difficult and who else contributed to the surrounding research.”

3. Sets, pairings and careful counting
Entries 21–30. Back to contents
When a technical definition feels difficult, build a small example that you can inspect completely. Use named people, numbered seats or a short list of destinations. State what belongs to each set before you draw arrows or count members. This gives your explanation a shared starting point. Once the small case makes sense, ask which part of the definition would remain important if the set became much larger or even infinite.
21. bijection
Say it: bye-JEK-shun
中文: 双射 · shuāng shè
Meaning: A function that pairs every element of one set with exactly one element of another, with nothing left unmatched.
Example: Matching six visitors to six numbered seats without duplication creates a bijection between the two sets.
中文例句: 把六名游客与六个编号座位一一配对且不重复,就在两组对象之间建立了双射(bijection)。
Use it well: State which two sets you mean. The pairing must use every member on both sides, and each member must have one partner. Drawing arrows can help you explain this before introducing formal symbols.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
22. injection
Say it: in-JEK-shun
中文: 单射 · dān shè
Meaning: A function that sends distinct inputs to distinct outputs, although some possible outputs may remain unused.
Example: Assigning each visitor a different locker is an injection even when several lockers remain empty.
中文例句: 给每位游客分配不同的储物柜,即使还有空柜,也构成单射(injection)。
Use it well: This is the mathematical sense. Name the inputs and the available outputs so the context stays clear. Check whether two inputs ever arrive at the same output; unused outputs do not break this particular condition.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
23. surjection
Say it: sur-JEK-shun
中文: 满射 · mǎn shè
Meaning: A function whose outputs reach every element of its specified target set.
Example: If every discussion table receives at least one student, the assignment is a surjection onto the tables.
中文例句: 如果每张讨论桌都分到至少一名学生,这种分配就是到桌子集合的满射(surjection)。
Use it well: Several inputs may share an output. The important question is whether the entire target set is reached. Be careful about what you call the target: changing that set can change whether a function qualifies.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
24. cardinality
Say it: kar-di-NAL-i-tee
中文: 基数 · jī shù
Meaning: The size of a set, expressed by the number of its distinct elements or the corresponding notion for infinite sets.
Example: The cardinality of our set of chosen destinations was four, although one name appeared twice in the notes.
中文例句: 我们所选目的地集合的基数(cardinality)是四,尽管笔记中有一个名字写了两次。
Use it well: Count distinct members when working with a set. Repeating a written label does not automatically add a new member. This word is useful when a mathematical explanation asks how many objects there are rather than how they are ordered.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
25. countable
Say it: KOWN-tuh-bul
中文: 可数的 · kě shǔ de
Meaning: Describing a set that is finite or whose members can all be listed in a sequence indexed by the positive integers.
Example: The positive even integers form a countable set, although the sequence never ends.
中文例句: 正偶数组成一个可数的(countable)集合,尽管这个数列没有终点。
Use it well: Here the technical definition includes finite sets; some authors use a narrower convention. Check the writer’s definition before comparing claims. The everyday feeling that a collection is too large to count does not settle its mathematical classification.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
26. uncountable
Say it: un-KOWN-tuh-bul
中文: 不可数的 · bù kě shǔ de
Meaning: Describing an infinite set whose members cannot all be placed in a sequence indexed by the positive integers.
Example: The real numbers are uncountable, so a never-ending numbered list still cannot include them all.
中文例句: 实数是不可数的(uncountable),因此即使一份编号清单无限延伸,也无法列尽所有实数。
Use it well: Use the word for the mathematical impossibility of such a listing. It is stronger than saying that a person lacks enough time. Explain what kind of list is ruled out so your reader can follow the claim.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
27. empty set
Say it: EMP-tee set
中文: 空集 · kōng jí
Meaning: A set with no members.
Example: When no route met all three conditions, our set of suitable routes was the empty set.
中文例句: 当没有路线同时符合三个条件时,合适路线的集合就是空集(empty set)。
Use it well: An empty result is still a result worth recording. State the selection conditions before announcing that nothing qualifies. This prevents a reader from confusing “none found under these conditions” with “nothing exists anywhere”.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
28. subset
Say it: SUB-set
中文: 子集 · zǐ jí
Meaning: A set whose every member also belongs to a specified larger or equal set.
Example: Our selected museum stops formed a subset of the destinations we had considered.
中文例句: 我们选定的博物馆站点,构成原先考虑过的目的地集合的子集(subset)。
Use it well: A subset can equal the whole original set; proper subset is the more specific expression for excluding that equality. In writing, identify the containing set so the relationship is explicit and checkable.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
29. union
Say it: YOO-nee-un
中文: 并集 · bìng jí
Meaning: The set containing everything that belongs to either of two or more given sets.
Example: The union of our morning and afternoon reading lists included every title selected for either session.
中文例句: 上午和下午阅读清单的并集(union),包括任一时段所选的全部书目。
Use it well: An item present in both sets appears only once in the resulting set. Describe the inclusion rule before counting. This mathematical use is about combining membership, rather than an organisation of workers or states.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
30. disjoint sets
Say it: dis-JOYNT sets
中文: 不相交的集合 · bù xiāng jiāo de jí hé
Meaning: Sets that have no member in common.
Example: The rooms numbered with positive even integers and those numbered with positive odd integers make disjoint sets.
中文例句: 用正偶数编号的房间与用正奇数编号的房间,构成不相交的集合(disjoint sets)。
Use it well: Test shared membership, not physical distance. Two sets can be written next to each other and still be disjoint. If one object meets both membership rules, the description no longer applies to those two sets.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
Put the distinction to work
Imagine three readers and five lockers, with a different locker allocated to each reader. Draw all the lockers so unused choices remain visible. Explain what the arrows establish. Then change the picture so that two readers share a locker. Which requirement changes? Answer with a complete sentence rather than just naming a term.
Reference: Wolfram MathWorld
The first assignment is an injection into the set of five lockers because different readers receive different lockers. Sharing a locker removes that property.

4. The language of a mathematical argument
Entries 31–40. Back to contents
Reading a proof is partly an exercise in following dependencies. Before worrying about every symbol, locate the starting assumptions, the statement being established and the point where an earlier result is used. Ask a small question whenever a step becomes unclear: “Which assumption allows this?” or “What exactly has been ruled out?” This keeps the discussion focused. You can practise these questions with a short explanation instead of attempting an advanced argument all at once.
31. axiom
Say it: AK-see-um
中文: 公理 · gōng lǐ
Meaning: A starting statement accepted without proof within a particular mathematical system.
Example: Before following the argument, Mei asked which axiom the writer had used at the first step.
中文例句: 跟随论证之前,美询问作者在第一步使用了哪条公理(axiom)。
Use it well: An axiom establishes a starting point for deductions. Identify the system or assumptions involved instead of treating the word as a general badge of unquestionable truth. Careful explanations tell readers what is assumed and what is established later.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
32. lemma
Say it: LEM-uh
中文: 引理 · yǐn lǐ
Meaning: A proved result used to help establish another mathematical result.
Example: The lecturer introduced a lemma to make the longer argument easier to follow.
中文例句: 讲师引入一个引理(lemma),使后面较长的论证更容易理解。
Use it well: Its role in the exposition matters more than its apparent size or difficulty. When summarising, say what the supporting result allows the next step to do. Avoid copying a title without explaining its purpose.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
33. corollary
Say it: kuh-ROL-uh-ree
中文: 推论 · tuī lùn
Meaning: A result that follows readily from something already proved.
Example: Jia placed the corollary after the main result and explained the short connection between them.
中文例句: 佳把推论(corollary)放在主要结果之后,并解释两者之间简短的推导关系。
Use it well: Signal the dependency with phrases such as “It follows that” or “Applying this result gives”. The reader should be able to identify the earlier result that supports your statement, rather than being asked to accept an unrelated assertion.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
34. contrapositive
Say it: kon-truh-POZ-i-tiv
中文: 逆否命题 · nì fǒu mìng tí
Meaning: For “if P, then Q”, the equivalent statement “if not Q, then not P”.
Example: The contrapositive of “If a number is divisible by four, it is even” begins with a number that is not even.
中文例句: “如果一个数能被四整除,它就是偶数”的逆否命题(contrapositive),从一个不是偶数的数开始。
Use it well: Negate both parts and reverse their order. Simply swapping the original parts produces a different statement. Write the two complete sentences beside each other before deciding whether your reformulation preserves the original implication.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
35. proof assistant
Say it: proof uh-SIS-tunt
中文: 证明助手 · zhèng míng zhù shǒu
Meaning: Software that helps construct formal mathematical proofs and checks their steps against specified logical rules.
Example: The student used a proof assistant to check a formal version of the argument.
中文例句: 学生用证明助手(proof assistant)检查论证的形式化版本。
Use it well: A checked formal statement still needs to express the intended claim. Ask what was entered, which assumptions were used and what the software verified. The tool’s name does not remove the need to explain the mathematical question clearly.
Word reference: Lean official documentation
36. mathematical induction
Say it: math-uh-MAT-i-kul in-DUK-shun
中文: 数学归纳法 · shù xué guī nà fǎ
Meaning: A proof method establishing a starting integer case and showing that each valid case implies the next.
Example: For mathematical induction, Arun explained both the first case and the step that carries the argument forward.
中文例句: 使用数学归纳法(mathematical induction)时,阿伦解释了初始情形,也解释了推进论证的步骤。
Use it well: Testing several examples is useful preparation but does not replace the general step. Give the starting value and the range of integers covered. Your explanation should show why the chain can continue without needing to inspect every case separately.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
37. proof by contradiction
Say it: proof by kon-truh-DIK-shun
中文: 反证法 · fǎn zhèng fǎ
Meaning: A proof that assumes the negation of a claim and derives a logical impossibility from that assumption.
Example: In her proof by contradiction, Lin identified exactly which assumption produced the impossible conclusion.
中文例句: 在她的反证法(proof by contradiction)论证中,琳明确指出哪个假设导致了不可能的结论。
Use it well: The contradiction must arise through valid reasoning. An unexpected or inconvenient conclusion is not enough. Mark where the temporary assumption begins, then explain why its failure establishes the claim you intended to prove.

38. necessary condition
Say it: NES-uh-suh-ree kun-DISH-un
中文: 必要条件 · bì yào tiáo jiàn
Meaning: A condition that must hold for a stated result to be true, although it may not be enough by itself.
Example: Having three sides is a necessary condition for a shape to be an equilateral triangle.
中文例句: 一个图形具有三条边,是它成为等边三角形的必要条件(necessary condition)。
Use it well: Ask what must be present whenever the result holds. Then ask separately whether the condition guarantees that result. This distinction helps with mathematical reading and with checking everyday claims that confuse a requirement with a complete guarantee.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
39. sufficient condition
Say it: suh-FISH-unt kun-DISH-un
中文: 充分条件 · chōng fèn tiáo jiàn
Meaning: A condition that guarantees a stated result whenever the condition holds.
Example: Being divisible by six is a sufficient condition for an integer to be divisible by three.
中文例句: 一个整数能被六整除,是它能被三整除的充分条件(sufficient condition)。
Use it well: There may be other ways for the result to hold. After explaining why the condition works, try finding a case where the result holds without it. This checks whether you have also, accidentally, claimed necessity.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
40. equivalence relation
Say it: ih-KWIV-uh-luns ri-LAY-shun
中文: 等价关系 · děng jià guān xì
Meaning: A relation that is reflexive, symmetric and transitive, allowing a set to be divided into equivalence classes.
Example: “Has the same birth month as” defines an equivalence relation on our group of visitors.
中文例句: “出生月份与……相同”在这组游客中定义了一种等价关系(equivalence relation)。
Use it well: A person has the same birth month as themselves; the relationship works in either direction and passes through a shared middle person. Check all three requirements instead of relying on the loose everyday meaning of “similar”.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
Put the distinction to work
Write this claim: “If an integer is divisible by ten, its final decimal digit is zero.” Identify both parts. Now write a sentence denying the second part and then denying the first. Have you preserved the implication? Compare the complete sentences carefully before giving your answer.
Reference: Wolfram MathWorld
A contrapositive is: “If an integer’s final decimal digit is not zero, the integer is not divisible by ten.” Both parts have been negated and their order reversed.

5. Shapes, surfaces and local descriptions
Entries 41–50. Back to contents
This chapter is a reading bridge into geometry. Do not expect a familiar-looking drawing to carry every part of a definition. Instead, use the picture to generate a clear question: are we considering the surface or the solid, a small region or the whole object, a way of measuring or a way of connecting points? Those distinctions are worth practising even if you choose to leave the more advanced terms for another day.
41. manifold
Say it: MAN-i-fohld
中文: 流形 · liú xíng
Meaning: A mathematical space that, near each point, resembles ordinary Euclidean space of a fixed dimension.
Example: Thinking of a sphere’s surface as a manifold helped Mei distinguish a local view from the whole shape.
中文例句: 把球面看作流形(manifold),帮助美区分局部视角与整体形状。
Use it well: Here the word names a mathematical object. A small patch can be described with ordinary coordinates even when the whole object needs several patches. Say whether you are discussing the local structure or the overall space.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
42. homeomorphism
Say it: hoh-mee-oh-MOR-fiz-um
中文: 同胚映射 · tóng pēi yìng shè
Meaning: A bijective continuous map between topological spaces whose inverse is also continuous.
Example: Our explanation of a homeomorphism checked continuity in both directions.
中文例句: 我们对同胚映射(homeomorphism)的解释,检查了两个方向的连续性。
Use it well: The spelling is close to homomorphism, a different mathematical term. Slow down when reading it aloud. A visual stretching analogy can help, but your written definition should keep the requirements for the map and its inverse.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
43. topology
Say it: tuh-POL-uh-jee
中文: 拓扑学 · tuò pū xué
Meaning: The branch of mathematics studying continuity and properties preserved by homeomorphisms, such as connectedness.
Example: Learning about topology gave our reading group a way to discuss shape without beginning with exact lengths.
中文例句: 学习拓扑学(topology)让我们的阅读小组能够讨论形状,而不必先从精确长度谈起。
Use it well: This subject asks a different set of questions from measuring every angle and distance. Identify which property you are discussing. A drawing may suggest an answer, but a mathematical explanation must state the relationship that preserves it.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
44. geodesic
Say it: jee-oh-DEE-sik
中文: 测地线 · cè dì xiàn
Meaning: A curve that locally follows the shortest route under a space’s specified geometry.
Example: On our model sphere, we compared a geodesic with a line drawn straight across the flat photograph.
中文例句: 在球体模型上,我们比较了测地线(geodesic)与平面照片中画出的直线。
Use it well: Locally is important: a long portion need not be the shortest possible route between its endpoints. Specify the surface and its geometry. A real walking route also has access restrictions and obstacles beyond this mathematical model.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
45. orientability
Say it: or-ee-en-tuh-BIL-i-tee
中文: 可定向性 · kě dìng xiàng xìng
Meaning: The property allowing a consistent choice of orientation across an entire manifold or surface.
Example: Our paper model made orientability easier to discuss than a definition alone had done.
中文例句: 我们的纸模型让可定向性(orientability)比单看定义更容易讨论。
Use it well: For a surface, ask whether a chosen local orientation can be carried around consistently. The everyday ability to find north is a different matter. Use a simple model to support your explanation without treating the model as the full theory.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
46. Riemannian metric
Say it: ree-MAN-ee-un MET-rik
中文: 黎曼度量 · lí màn dù liàng
Meaning: A smoothly varying inner product on the tangent spaces of a manifold, giving a way to measure lengths and angles.
Example: The speaker explained that a Riemannian metric supplies more information than the underlying space alone.
中文例句: 讲者解释说,黎曼度量(Riemannian metric)比单独的底层空间提供更多信息。
Use it well: This is an advanced reading term. You can first remember its measuring role, then revisit tangent spaces and inner products when ready. Do not substitute an ordinary street map’s scale for the complete mathematical definition.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
47. coordinate chart
Say it: koh-OR-di-nut chart
中文: 坐标图 · zuò biāo tú
Meaning: A map that assigns Euclidean coordinates to an open region of a manifold through a homeomorphism.
Example: A coordinate chart described one region of the surface, while another chart covered the remaining region.
中文例句: 一个坐标图(coordinate chart)描述曲面的一个区域,另一个坐标图覆盖其余区域。
Use it well: The word chart here means a local mathematical description. Check the region where its coordinates are valid. In a careful explanation, a useful local description does not automatically become a single description of the whole object.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
48. Euler characteristic
Say it: OY-ler kar-uk-tuh-RIS-tik
中文: 欧拉示性数 · ōu lā shì xìng shù
Meaning: A topological quantity computed for a suitable surface mesh by counting vertices, subtracting edges and adding faces.
Example: For a cube’s surface, our Euler characteristic calculation gave eight minus twelve plus six, or two.
中文例句: 对于立方体表面,我们计算欧拉示性数(Euler characteristic):八减十二加六,结果为二。
Use it well: Count each shared edge and vertex once. Explain what your mesh represents before applying the count. The arithmetic is approachable, but its significance lies in the relationship between the result and the underlying surface.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
49. torus
Say it: TOR-us
中文: 环面 · huán miàn
Meaning: In its familiar geometric form, the doughnut-shaped surface generated by rotating a circle around a suitable external axis.
Example: We sketched a torus and marked the opening through its middle.
中文例句: 我们画了一个环面(torus),并标出穿过中央的孔。
Use it well: The surface and the solid material enclosed by it are different objects. Say which one you mean. For a first explanation, focus on the familiar ring-shaped case rather than implying that one everyday picture covers every technical use.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
50. Möbius strip
Say it: MUR-bee-us strip; first vowel rounded
中文: 莫比乌斯带 · mò bǐ wū sī dài
Meaning: A one-sided, non-orientable surface modelled by joining a strip’s ends after giving one end a half-twist.
Example: A pencil line around our Möbius strip returned to its starting point without crossing an edge.
中文例句: 铅笔沿着我们的莫比乌斯带(Möbius strip)画线,无须越过边缘便回到起点。
Use it well: Use paper as a model, then explain which surface property you are testing. Trace slowly and describe the path. Avoid judging the result from the first glance at a twisted object.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
Put the distinction to work
Imagine describing a half-twisted paper strip whose ends have been joined. Explain how you traced it with a pencil: where you began, whether you crossed an edge and how you recognised your return. Make the test understandable in words without claiming that a classroom model establishes every general result.
Reference: Wolfram MathWorld
For a Möbius strip made with a single half-twist, a continuous tracing can visit what initially look like both sides without crossing the edge.

6. Vectors and transformations in a reading notebook
Entries 51–60. Back to contents
Advanced vocabulary becomes less intimidating when you ask what kind of thing each word names. Is it a number, a vector, a collection or a rule that acts on objects? Write that category next to the term before attempting a calculation. Then describe the input and output of one small example. This habit helps you explain a diagram, follow a talk or ask a useful question when a technical passage moves too quickly.
51. eigenvalue
Say it: EYE-gen-val-yoo
中文: 特征值 · tè zhēng zhí
Meaning: A scalar by which a linear transformation multiplies a corresponding nonzero eigenvector.
Example: For an arrow doubled without turning, the associated eigenvalue in our example was two.
中文例句: 在我们的例子中,一个箭头被放大到两倍而没有转向,对应的特征值(eigenvalue)就是二。
Use it well: Connect the number with its transformation and vector. The number alone tells an incomplete story. Use a small, explicitly described example before discussing a complicated system, and check that the vector is nonzero.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
52. eigenvector
Say it: EYE-gen-vek-ter
中文: 特征向量 · tè zhēng xiàng liàng
Meaning: A nonzero vector that a linear transformation sends to a scalar multiple of itself.
Example: The student tested whether her chosen arrow was an eigenvector of the transformation.
中文例句: 学生检验自己选的箭头是否是该变换的特征向量(eigenvector)。
Use it well: A scalar multiple can shorten, lengthen or reverse a real vector, and may also be zero. “The direction never changes” is therefore an incomplete shortcut. Keep the scalar-multiple definition when you write a precise explanation.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
53. determinant
Say it: di-TUR-mi-nunt
中文: 行列式 · háng liè shì
Meaning: A scalar associated with a square matrix, whose value indicates properties including whether that matrix is invertible.
Example: A zero determinant warned our group that the square matrix could not be inverted.
中文例句: 行列式(determinant)为零,提醒我们这个方阵不可逆。
Use it well: The word names a value rather than the entire array of entries. State which matrix you are considering and show what conclusion the value supports. Avoid applying the usual determinant definition to an arbitrary rectangular array.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
54. linear transformation
Say it: LIN-ee-er trans-for-MAY-shun
中文: 线性变换 · xiàn xìng biàn huàn
Meaning: A map between vector spaces that preserves vector addition and multiplication by scalars.
Example: We checked that the linear transformation treated a sum in the same way as transforming both terms and then adding.
中文例句: 我们检查线性变换(linear transformation)是否把一个和映成各项分别变换后相加的结果。
Use it well: Both requirements matter. A graph that looks straight is not by itself the definition for all vector spaces. Try explaining the two tests verbally before using compact notation, especially when helping a learner from another subject.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
55. vector space
Say it: VEK-ter spayss
中文: 向量空间 · xiàng liàng kōng jiān
Meaning: A collection with vector addition and scalar multiplication satisfying the usual vector-space rules.
Example: The presenter described a vector space before introducing the maps that act on it.
中文例句: 讲者先描述向量空间(vector space),再介绍作用于该空间的映射。
Use it well: The elements need not be arrows drawn on paper. For introductory reading, notice which objects belong to the collection and what addition and scaling mean there. Your explanation should connect the abstract name with the particular example being discussed.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
56. null space
Say it: nul spayss
中文: 零空间 · líng kōng jiān
Meaning: The set of vectors that a linear transformation maps to the zero vector.
Example: Our example placed every vector collapsed to zero in the transformation’s null space.
中文例句: 在我们的例子中,所有被映到零向量的向量都属于该变换的零空间(null space)。
Use it well: It always contains the zero vector, so it is not an empty set. State the transformation before describing its null space. This distinction is especially useful when a diagram makes “nothing left” sound like a complete mathematical description.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
57. rank
Say it: rank
中文: 秩 · zhì
Meaning: For a matrix or linear map, the dimension of its image; for a matrix, this equals the maximum number of linearly independent columns.
Example: Although the matrix had three columns, its rank was only two.
中文例句: 虽然该矩阵有三列,它的秩(rank)却只有二。
Use it well: Count independent information rather than merely counting displayed columns. This technical sense differs from a position in a competition. Make the subject explicit by writing “the rank of the matrix” when readers may be unfamiliar with linear algebra.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
58. basis
Say it: BAY-sis
中文: 基 · jī
Meaning: A linearly independent set of vectors whose linear combinations generate an entire vector space.
Example: The two selected vectors formed a basis for the plane in our example.
中文例句: 在我们的例子中,选出的两个向量构成平面的一个基(basis)。
Use it well: Check both independence and the ability to generate the whole space. A list can fail by including unnecessary vectors or by leaving some directions unreachable. The plural is bases, so keep the number clear when comparing choices.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
59. orthogonality
Say it: or-thuh-guh-NAL-i-tee
中文: 正交性 · zhèng jiāo xìng
Meaning: The relationship between vectors whose inner product is zero; in ordinary Euclidean geometry it corresponds to perpendicularity for nonzero vectors.
Example: The group checked orthogonality by calculating the inner product rather than trusting the sketch.
中文例句: 小组通过计算内积来检验正交性(orthogonality),而没有只凭草图判断。
Use it well: A picture can suggest a relationship, but the specified inner product provides the test. Mention which setting you are using. This keeps a familiar right-angle image from becoming an unsupported rule for every abstract example.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
60. quadratic form
Say it: kwuh-DRAT-ik form
中文: 二次型 · èr cì xíng
Meaning: A polynomial expression in which every nonzero term has total degree two.
Example: The expression three x squared plus two x y plus y squared is a quadratic form.
中文例句: “三倍的x平方,加二倍的xy,再加y平方”是一个二次型(quadratic form)。
Use it well: Look at the total degree of each term, including mixed products. A constant or a lone first-degree term changes the classification. Reading the expression aloud in a steady order can make the structure easier to explain.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
Put the distinction to work
Use an imaginary transformation that doubles every arrow in a plane. Choose one nonzero arrow and describe its image. Keep three pieces of information visible: the rule, the chosen arrow and the multiplying number. Next, try explaining the same example to a learner using no symbols. If your explanation loses one of those pieces, revise it before adding more terminology.
Reference: Wolfram MathWorld · Wolfram MathWorld
The chosen nonzero arrow is an eigenvector, and its eigenvalue is two. The arrow and the number play different roles in the same relationship.

7. Language change and German grammar
Entries 61–70. Back to contents
You do not need to be fluent in German to become a more attentive reader of words. Begin by distinguishing a written mark, a sound pattern and a grammatical form. When you encounter an unfamiliar ending, copy the whole phrase so that its context remains available. When you compare two languages, treat resemblance as a question to investigate. A reliable dictionary or grammar can help you decide whether the relationship is historical, grammatical or merely coincidental.
61. ablaut
Say it: AH-blout
中文: 元音交替 · yuán yīn jiāo tì
Meaning: A systematic vowel alternation within related word forms or roots, often linked with a grammatical or meaning difference.
Example: The teacher used “sing, sang, sung” to help us hear ablaut.
中文例句: 老师用“sing、sang、sung”帮助我们听出元音交替(ablaut)。
Use it well: Listen to the changing vowel while keeping the surrounding sounds in mind. This describes a patterned relationship among forms. A completely unrelated replacement stem needs a different explanation, even if it also expresses a grammatical change.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
62. umlaut
Say it: UUM-lout; first vowel as in book
中文: 变音符号 · biàn yīn fú hào
Meaning: The two-dot mark placed over certain vowels, especially in German; the word also names a related historical vowel-change process.
Example: The umlaut in Göttingen’s name reminded Mei to check the vowel sound rather than ignore the dots.
中文例句: 哥廷根名字中的变音符号(umlaut),提醒美核对元音发音,而不是忽略那两个点。
Use it well: For reading place names, begin with the written mark and listen to a reliable pronunciation. In linguistic history the term has a more technical use. Say which sense you intend when comparing a spelling with a sound change.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
63. consonant shift
Say it: KON-suh-nunt shift
中文: 辅音推移 · fǔ yīn tuī yí
Meaning: A regular set of changes affecting consonant sounds during the history of a language or dialect.
Example: A consonant shift helped explain why related words could begin with different sounds.
中文例句: 辅音推移(consonant shift)有助于解释为什么相关词语可能以不同的声音开头。
Use it well: Look for a repeated historical pattern across words. One modern speaker’s slip is not enough evidence. When reading an explanation, identify the earlier sound, the later sound and the language stage to which each belongs.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
64. strong verb
Say it: strong vurb
中文: 强变化动词 · qiáng biàn huà dòng cí
Meaning: In Germanic grammar, a verb whose past forms are characterised by a change in the stem vowel rather than the weak dental suffix.
Example: “Sing” is a strong verb: its past tense changes the vowel in “sang”.
中文例句: “Sing”是强变化动词(strong verb):它的过去式“sang”改变了元音。
Use it well: Strong is a grammatical classification here, not praise for vivid writing. Learn the principal forms together. When moving between historical grammar and a modern learner’s textbook, check the classification being used rather than assuming every irregular verb works identically.
Word reference: University of Cincinnati
65. declension
Say it: di-KLEN-shun
中文: 变格 · biàn gé
Meaning: The pattern of grammatical forms taken by a noun, pronoun or adjective, especially forms marking case and number.
Example: The declension chart helped Arun compare the noun’s forms instead of memorising isolated endings.
中文例句: 变格(declension)表帮助阿伦比较名词的各种形式,而不是孤立地记忆词尾。
Use it well: Read each form alongside its grammatical label. A table is useful only when you know what changes between its rows or columns. This word concerns nominal forms; use an appropriate verb-related term when describing verb patterns.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
66. inflection
Say it: in-FLEK-shun
中文: 屈折变化 · qū zhé biàn huà
Meaning: A change in a word’s form that expresses grammatical information such as tense, number or case.
Example: Adding the plural ending in “books” is an example of inflection.
中文例句: 在“books”中加上复数词尾,是屈折变化(inflection)的一个例子。
Use it well: Ask which grammatical information changes while the basic word remains recognisable. Distinguish this from creating a new dictionary word. The same English term can also concern voice or pitch, so keep the grammar context explicit.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
67. dative
Say it: DAY-tiv
中文: 与格 · yǔ gé
Meaning: A grammatical case often used for an indirect object or a recipient, with further uses depending on the language.
Example: The learner asked why the German phrase used the dative after that preposition.
中文例句: 学习者询问,为什么那个德语短语在该介词之后使用与格(dative)。
Use it well: Treat the language’s actual pattern as your guide. A rough English translation using “to” or “for” may help initially, but it does not determine every case choice. Check the verb or preposition governing the phrase.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
68. genitive
Say it: JEN-i-tiv
中文: 属格 · shǔ gé
Meaning: A grammatical case commonly expressing possession, origin or another relationship between nouns.
Example: The genitive ending helped Jia understand which person the inscription referred to.
中文例句: 属格(genitive)词尾帮助佳理解碑文指的是哪一个人。
Use it well: Start by asking what relationship the form expresses in its sentence. Possession is a useful first idea, but the range can be wider. Record the whole phrase when studying an unfamiliar ending so you retain the necessary context.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
69. etymon
Say it: ET-i-mon
中文: 词源形式 · cí yuán xíng shì
Meaning: An earlier word or form from which a later word developed or was borrowed.
Example: The dictionary identified an etymon, giving our group a firmer starting point than a guess based on sound.
中文例句: 词典指出了一个词源形式(etymon),为小组提供了比凭声音猜测更可靠的起点。
Use it well: A resemblance in spelling is a clue to investigate, not proof of descent. Follow the documented stages and language labels. When a source marks a form as reconstructed, preserve that qualification in your own explanation.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
70. Grimm's law
Say it: grimz law
中文: 格林定律 · gé lín dìng lǜ
Meaning: The historical sound correspondences describing major changes from Proto-Indo-European stop consonants to Proto-Germanic consonants.
Example: Grimm’s law gave the students a specific example of a systematic consonant shift.
中文例句: 格林定律(Grimm’s law)为学生提供了系统性辅音推移的一个具体例子。
Use it well: This is a linguistic generalisation, with a defined historical scope. It is not a rule requiring present-day speakers to change their pronunciation. Use a checked set of related words when studying it rather than inventing a pattern from one pair.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Choose one word you can hear clearly in several forms. Read the forms aloud and mark which part stays recognisable and which part changes. Then ask what the change communicates. Keep this observation separate from a claim about the word’s ancient history. If you want to investigate that history, record the source and the earlier form it identifies before writing your conclusion.
Reference: Merriam-Webster
The sequence “sing, sang, sung” illustrates ablaut through a changing root vowel. Naming that pattern is different from saying that every English irregular verb follows the same pattern.

8. Quantum vocabulary without overclaiming
Entries 71–80. Back to contents
This is an optional extension for readers who want to follow an introductory science account. Take one definition at a time. Identify the physical quantity, the mathematical representation and the claim about a possible measurement. If a passage uses a vivid analogy, ask which part of the analogy is helpful and where it stops. You can write a useful account of what you understood while openly naming the part that still requires further study.
71. wavefunction
Say it: WAYV-funk-shun
中文: 波函数 · bō hán shù
Meaning: A mathematical function representing a pure quantum state; for a normalised position-space wavefunction, its squared magnitude gives a probability density.
Example: The diagram represented a wavefunction, so Lin asked what its axes and values meant.
中文例句: 图中表示的是波函数(wavefunction),因此琳询问坐标轴与数值各有什么含义。
Use it well: Do not read the curve as a photograph of a tiny object. First identify what is being represented. The distinction between a function, a probability density and a measured outcome keeps a short explanation from promising too much.
Word reference: OpenStax
72. bra-ket notation
Say it: bra ket noh-TAY-shun
中文: 狄拉克符号 · dí lā kè fú hào
Meaning: A notation using bras and kets to represent quantum states and related dual vectors, with bracket combinations expressing operations such as inner products.
Example: The reader paused at the bra-ket notation and identified which symbol represented the state.
中文例句: 读者在狄拉克符号(bra-ket notation)处停下,辨认哪个符号表示状态。
Use it well: You can recognise the notation before mastering every operation. Ask how a symbol is read aloud, what kind of object it represents and how the surrounding expression uses it. Familiar-looking brackets can have a specialised mathematical job.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
73. commutator
Say it: KOM-yoo-tay-ter
中文: 对易子 · duì yì zǐ
Meaning: For two operators A and B, the difference AB minus BA, indicating whether their order matters algebraically.
Example: The commutator vanished in our example because both orders produced the same operator.
中文例句: 在我们的例子中,两个次序产生相同的算符,因此对易子(commutator)为零。
Use it well: Keep the order visible when reading the products. This operator sense differs from a component in an electric motor. A zero result describes an algebraic relationship; explain the relevant operators before connecting it to a physical interpretation.
Word reference: Wolfram MathWorld
74. observable
Say it: ub-ZUR-vuh-bul
中文: 可观测量 · kě guān cè liàng
Meaning: A measurable physical quantity represented in quantum mechanics by a suitable Hermitian operator.
Example: Energy was the observable discussed in the example, so we asked which outcomes the model allowed.
中文例句: 例子讨论的可观测量(observable)是能量,因此我们询问模型允许哪些结果。
Use it well: Here observable is a noun. Identify the quantity being measured and distinguish it from a particular result. Something visually noticeable is not automatically the technical quantity intended by the writer.
Word reference: IBM Quantum Learning
75. probability amplitude
Say it: prob-uh-BIL-i-tee AM-pli-tood
中文: 概率幅 · gài lǜ fú
Meaning: A complex-valued quantity whose squared magnitude gives the probability of a specified quantum outcome in the relevant formulation.
Example: The probability amplitude had to be converted into a probability before we could interpret the prediction.
中文例句: 我们需要先把概率幅(probability amplitude)转换为概率,才能解释预测。
Use it well: An amplitude is not itself a percentage. Ask which outcome it refers to and which mathematical operation produces the probability. Keeping those stages separate is more useful than treating every number in a scientific account as directly measurable.
Word reference: The Feynman Lectures, Caltech
76. Born rule
Say it: born rool
中文: 玻恩规则 · bō ēn guī zé
Meaning: The rule connecting a quantum state with measurement probabilities through squared amplitudes, or its equivalent general forms.
Example: The Born rule turned the state’s amplitudes into probabilities for the specified measurement.
中文例句: 玻恩规则(Born rule)把状态的概率幅转换为指定测量的概率。
Use it well: Specify the measurement. The rule predicts probabilities; one result alone does not describe the full predicted distribution. Keep your account tied to the mathematical situation being discussed.
Word reference: MIT OpenCourseWare
77. uncertainty principle
Say it: un-SUR-tun-tee PRIN-si-pul
中文: 不确定性原理 · bù què dìng xìng yuán lǐ
Meaning: A quantum principle limiting how sharply certain paired quantities, such as position and momentum, can both be specified in a state.
Example: The uncertainty principle led the group to ask which pair of physical quantities was being compared.
中文例句: 不确定性原理(uncertainty principle)让小组询问,正在比较的是哪一对物理量。
Use it well: This is a precise physical idea, not a general claim that knowledge is impossible. Do not turn it into advice about ordinary indecision. Identify the quantities and the type of uncertainty before drawing a conclusion.
Word reference: Nobel Prize educational resources
78. quantum number
Say it: KWON-tum NUM-ber
中文: 量子数 · liàng zǐ shù
Meaning: A number used to label a quantum state or a property of that state, such as its angular momentum.
Example: The chart used a quantum number to distinguish states within the model.
中文例句: 图表使用量子数(quantum number)来区分模型中的状态。
Use it well: Different quantum numbers have different allowed values and physical roles. Read the symbol’s definition rather than treating it as an ordinary serial number. State which system and property are involved before trying to interpret a value.
Word reference: OpenStax
79. degeneracy
Say it: di-JEN-er-uh-see
中文: 简并 · jiǎn bìng
Meaning: In quantum physics, the occurrence of more than one independent state with the same value of an observable, particularly energy.
Example: The example showed energy degeneracy because distinct independent states shared one energy value.
中文例句: 这个例子显示了能量简并(degeneracy),因为不同的独立状态具有相同的能量值。
Use it well: The technical term carries no moral judgement. Ask what value is shared and how many independent states have it. A clear sentence naming the physical quantity prevents readers from importing an unrelated everyday meaning.
Word reference: University of Oxford, James Sparks
80. eigenstate
Say it: EYE-gen-stayt
中文: 本征态 · běn zhēng tài
Meaning: A quantum state represented by an eigenvector of a specified observable’s operator, giving a definite value for that observable.
Example: The speaker described an eigenstate of energy and carefully named the observable involved.
中文例句: 讲者描述了能量本征态(eigenstate),并仔细指出相关的可观测量。
Use it well: Always ask “of which observable?” A state need not have a definite value for every quantity. The mathematical word connects with the earlier eigenvector entry, but here it is being used to describe a physical system’s quantum state.
Word reference: University of Cambridge, David Tong
Put the distinction to work
Imagine a paragraph that moves too quickly from a mathematical expression to a statement about what an experiment will show. Prepare three questions: What state is being described? What measurement is being considered? What probabilities are predicted? You do not need to calculate anything to notice whether the explanation has supplied those pieces. In your notebook, distinguish an outcome you observed from a distribution described by a model.

9. Notice woodland patterns and change
Entries 81–90. Back to contents
Choose a safe, permitted viewpoint and describe a small part of the scene. Look for position, scale and relationships: what is standing, what lies on the ground and where young plants appear. Keep your first notes close to what you can see. A more ambitious explanation may need repeated observations or a published study. You can still ask an excellent question on a short walk without pretending that the walk has supplied an entire ecological history.
81. crown shyness
Say it: krown SHY-nis
中文: 树冠羞避 · shù guān xiū bì
Meaning: The occurrence of persistent gaps between neighbouring tree crowns at similar heights.
Example: The photograph suggested crown shyness, but we needed more information before explaining the gaps.
中文例句: 照片似乎显示了树冠羞避(crown shyness),但在解释这些间隙之前,我们还需要更多信息。
Use it well: The name describes a canopy pattern without giving trees a human emotion. Record the visible spacing first. Several processes can affect crown shape, so a single photograph does not justify a confident explanation of the cause.
Word reference: Onoda and colleagues, Ecological Research
82. snag
Say it: snag
中文: 立枯木 · lì kū mù
Meaning: A dead tree that remains standing.
Example: We described the snag from the path and resisted the temptation to stand beneath its branches.
中文例句: 我们从步道上描述那棵立枯木(snag),没有走到它的枝条下。
Use it well: This forest sense is different from an unexpected problem in a plan. Standing dead wood can support other organisms, but visitors should give potentially unstable trees space and follow site warnings rather than approaching for a closer photograph.
Word reference: US National Park Service
83. basal area
Say it: BAY-zul AIR-ee-uh
中文: 胸高断面积 · xiōng gāo duàn miàn jī
Meaning: A tree trunk’s cross-sectional area at a defined breast height, often summed per unit of land for a stand.
Example: The report gave basal area per hectare, so we checked both the area units and the measurement convention.
中文例句: 报告给出了每公顷的胸高断面积(basal area),因此我们检查面积单位与测量规定。
Use it well: The measure concerns trunk cross sections, not the area covered by leaves. Different protocols define breast height differently. When comparing numbers, check the method and units before deciding that one wooded area has a larger value.
Word reference: Oregon State University Extension
84. stand density
Say it: stand DEN-si-tee
中文: 林分密度 · lín fèn mì dù
Meaning: A measure of how many trees occupy a forest stand and, in relative measures, how fully they occupy the available growing space.
Example: Two plots could have the same stand density by stem count but very different tree sizes.
中文例句: 两个样地按树木数量计算的林分密度(stand density)可能相同,树木大小却差异很大。
Use it well: Name the density measure being used. Trees per hectare and a relative density index answer related but different questions. A clear account reports the metric instead of relying on the impression that a forest simply looks crowded.

85. natural regeneration
Say it: NACH-er-ul ree-jen-uh-RAY-shun
中文: 天然更新 · tiān rán gēng xīn
Meaning: In the seed-based sense used here, the establishment of new trees from seed arriving and germinating naturally on a site.
Example: Our reading asked which conditions would allow natural regeneration to establish successfully.
中文例句: 我们的阅读材料询问,哪些条件能使天然更新(natural regeneration)成功建立。
Use it well: Naturally established seedlings may still be affected by management decisions. Avoid equating this process with complete absence of human influence. Ask about seed sources, the site and subsequent survival, without assuming that every visible young tree has the same origin.
Word reference: Forest Research
86. advance regeneration
Say it: ud-VANS ree-jen-uh-RAY-shun
中文: 预生更新 · yù shēng gēng xīn
Meaning: Young trees established before the older overstorey is removed or dies.
Example: The account distinguished advance regeneration already present below the trees from seedlings that appeared later.
中文例句: 介绍区分了早已存在于树下的预生更新(advance regeneration)与后来才出现的幼苗。
Use it well: Advance refers to timing. It does not promise faster growth or better condition. When explaining a woodland change, establish what was present beforehand; otherwise you may incorrectly attribute every young tree to the most recent event.
Word reference: US Forest Service
87. gap dynamics
Say it: gap dye-NAM-iks
中文: 林窗动态 · lín chuāng dòng tài
Meaning: The formation and subsequent change of forest-canopy openings, including vegetation responses and possible closure.
Example: To understand gap dynamics, the researchers compared observations made at different times.
中文例句: 为了了解林窗动态(gap dynamics),研究人员比较了不同时间的观察记录。
Use it well: Dynamics asks what changes. A single open patch is a snapshot; explaining its development requires a sequence or other evidence. Use words such as formed, expanded and closed only when the observations support that particular history.
Word reference: US Geological Survey
88. nurse log
Say it: nurs log
中文: 育苗倒木 · yù miáo dǎo mù
Meaning: A fallen, decaying log that provides a growing surface and resources for young plants.
Example: Tiny plants growing along a fallen trunk helped us understand the term nurse log.
中文例句: 沿着倒下树干生长的小植物,帮助我们理解育苗倒木(nurse log)这个词。
Use it well: The term describes an ecological role. Observe the plants and the wood together without disturbing either. In your sentence, explain what the log supports rather than assuming that every fallen trunk has become a seedling nursery.
Word reference: US National Park Service
89. mast year
Say it: mast yeer
中文: 结实丰年 · jiē shí fēng nián
Meaning: A year when trees of a species produce an unusually abundant, often synchronised crop of seeds or fruits.
Example: We asked whether the heavy seed crop reflected a mast year or only one unusually productive tree.
中文例句: 我们询问,大量种子是否反映了结实丰年(mast year),还是仅仅某一棵树特别多产。
Use it well: Compare observations across trees and years before using a regional label. A large pile of seeds is an invitation to investigate. Keep the observation’s place and date in your notes rather than turning a local impression into a general claim.
Word reference: Woodland Trust, Nature’s Calendar
90. coarse woody debris
Say it: kors WUUD-ee DEB-ree
中文: 粗木质残体 · cū mù zhì cán tǐ
Meaning: Large dead woody material such as fallen trunks and substantial branches, classified using a study’s stated size limits.
Example: The survey counted coarse woody debris separately from the fine twigs scattered nearby.
中文例句: 调查把粗木质残体(coarse woody debris)与附近散落的小枝分开统计。
Use it well: Coarse is a size distinction, not a judgement that the material is useless. Check the survey’s diameter threshold before comparing counts. Visitors can describe what is present without moving logs or deciding how the site should be managed.
Word reference: US Forest Service Research
Put the distinction to work
Prepare two columns in your notebook: “Observed today” and “Would need more evidence”. Put a visible opening between trees in the first column. Put the date it formed, its cause and its future development in the second unless you have reliable supporting information. Then write a sentence that joins the two columns honestly, using a phrase such as “I noticed” followed by “I would need to check”.
Reference: US Geological Survey
Example observation: “I noticed an opening above the path. I would need earlier records to explain when it appeared or how the surrounding vegetation has changed.”

10. Read forest measurements responsibly
Entries 91–100. Back to contents
A number becomes informative when you know what was measured. Before comparing two woodland descriptions, look for the unit, the area sampled, the height of measurement and any size threshold. If those details are absent, write a question rather than filling the gap with a guess. The vocabulary in this chapter supports reading and discussion. A visitor can learn from published data without taking samples, leaving paths or using specialised equipment.
91. deadwood
Say it: DED-wuud
中文: 枯死木质物 · kū sǐ mù zhì wù
Meaning: Non-living woody material, including standing or fallen dead trees and dead branches.
Example: The guide’s question about deadwood changed the way we looked at an apparently untidy woodland scene.
中文例句: 导览者关于枯死木质物(deadwood)的提问,改变了我们看待一处看似杂乱林景的方式。
Use it well: This broad term includes several forms and sizes. Describe the material’s position and condition before interpreting its role. Ecological value and visitor safety can both matter, so leave management decisions and handling to the responsible people.
Word reference: Forest Research
92. dendrometry
Say it: den-DROM-uh-tree
中文: 测树学 · cè shù xué
Meaning: The measurement of trees and their dimensions, including height, diameter and volume.
Example: A discussion of dendrometry helped us see why “a very large tree” was less informative than a clearly defined measurement.
中文例句: 关于测树学(dendrometry)的讨论帮助我们看出,“一棵很大的树”不如一个定义清楚的测量结果有信息量。
Use it well: Ask which dimension is being measured and how. Height, girth and volume do different jobs in a description. You can practise the vocabulary by reading published measurements without measuring, marking or disturbing trees yourself.
Word reference: Andrews Forest Research Program, Oregon State University
93. increment borer
Say it: IN-kri-munt BOR-er
中文: 生长锥 · shēng zhǎng zhuī
Meaning: A specialised hollow tool used to extract a narrow core of wood for studying a tree’s growth and age.
Example: The photograph showed an increment borer beside the narrow wood sample it had extracted.
中文例句: 照片显示了一支生长锥(increment borer),旁边是它取出的细长木芯。
Use it well: Learn to identify the tool without treating this entry as an instruction to use it. Taking a core affects a living tree and requires permission and expertise. A visitor’s useful question concerns what the sample can establish and what it cannot.
Word reference: Oregon State University Extension
94. tree ring
Say it: tree ring
中文: 年轮 · nián lún
Meaning: A visible growth layer in wood, commonly corresponding to a year of growth in trees with a seasonal growth cycle.
Example: The tree ring pattern gave the researchers evidence to compare with records from other trees.
中文例句: 年轮(tree ring)图案为研究人员提供了证据,可以与其他树木的记录比较。
Use it well: Growth patterns need careful interpretation. Counting visible bands casually is not always enough to date a tree accurately. When describing research, distinguish a ring, a sequence of rings and the dated record established through comparison.
Word reference: US National Park Service
95. sapling
Say it: SAP-ling
中文: 幼树 · yòu shù
Meaning: A young tree beyond its earliest seedling stage; technical surveys may define it using particular size limits.
Example: We left room around the sapling instead of stepping closer for a photograph.
中文例句: 我们在幼树(sapling)周围留出空间,没有为了拍照而再往前踩。
Use it well: Use the word for a young tree while avoiding an unsupported exact age. If you are reading a survey, check its size definition. Two reports may count different ranges even when both use the same familiar label.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
96. canopy stratification
Say it: KAN-uh-pee strat-i-fi-KAY-shun
中文: 林冠分层 · lín guàn fēn céng
Meaning: The organisation of a forest canopy into vertical layers, as defined and measured in a particular study.
Example: The diagram introduced canopy stratification, but the accompanying text explained how the layers were identified.
中文例句: 图解介绍了林冠分层(canopy stratification),配文则解释如何辨认这些层次。
Use it well: A forest need not divide into a fixed number of neat floors. Researchers can define layers in different ways. When summarising a study, preserve the method and scale instead of making the drawing sound like a universal arrangement.
Word reference: Baker and Wilson, Forest Ecology and Management
97. understorey
Say it: UN-der-stor-ee
中文: 林下层 · lín xià céng
Meaning: The vegetation growing below the main forest canopy, especially smaller trees and shrubs.
Example: The understorey looked different from the tall crowns above it, so Jia described the two levels separately.
中文例句: 林下层(understorey)看起来与上方高大的树冠不同,所以佳分别描述了这两个层次。
Use it well: Understory is the common American spelling. Choose one spelling consistently in your own writing. Describe what you can actually identify and avoid assuming that every plant beneath the canopy has the same light requirements or ecological role.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
98. forest succession
Say it: FOR-ist suk-SESH-un
中文: 森林演替 · sēn lín yǎn tì
Meaning: Change in the composition and structure of a forest community over time, influenced by establishment, growth, death and disturbance.
Example: The reading on forest succession compared possible long-term changes rather than predicting tomorrow’s appearance.
中文例句: 关于森林演替(forest succession)的材料比较了可能的长期变化,而不是预测明天的景象。
Use it well: A sequence helps organise the idea, but real sites can follow different pathways. Keep the timescale and conditions visible. Avoid describing a forest as if every change must move towards one inevitable final arrangement.
Word reference: Penn State Extension
99. silviculture
Say it: SIL-vi-kul-cher
中文: 森林培育学 · sēn lín péi yù xué
Meaning: The science and practice of establishing and tending forest stands to meet specified management aims.
Example: The discussion of silviculture asked which aims the woodland manager was trying to balance.
中文例句: 关于森林培育学(silviculture)的讨论,询问林地管理者正在平衡哪些目标。
Use it well: Ask about the stated aims before judging a treatment. The same action can have different purposes in different settings. This vocabulary supports informed questions; it does not turn a short visit into enough evidence for prescribing forest management.
Word reference: US Forest Service Research
100. cambial age
Say it: KAM-bee-ul ayj
中文: 形成层年龄 · xíng chéng céng nián líng
Meaning: Age expressed by the growth-ring count from the pith at a particular stem height, rather than necessarily the tree’s total age.
Example: The researchers reported cambial age at the sampling height and explained why it differed from total tree age.
中文例句: 研究人员报告了取样高度处的形成层年龄(cambial age),并解释它为什么不同于树木总年龄。
Use it well: A tree takes time to reach the height where a sample is taken. Preserve that measurement context when reading an age estimate. An apparently simple number becomes more useful when its starting point and method are stated.
Word reference: Shindo and colleagues, University of Padua repository
Put the distinction to work
Imagine two reports calling a tree “young”. One supplies a ring count at a stated height; the other uses a size category. Underline how each label was assigned. Do the descriptions answer the same question? Keep their methods visible when comparing them.
Reference: Shindo and colleagues, University of Padua repository
Cambial age at a sampling height does not include the years needed to reach that height. A careful summary keeps that qualification beside the age estimate.

Use the words in connected English
These original model scenes show ways to plan, explain and revise. Use them as practice before writing about your own experiences.
Model 1: a plan with room for learning
“We have chosen one museum as the centre of our afternoon. Before leaving, we will check its current visitor information and write down the question that interests us most. During the visit, we will look closely at one object or explanation and record the details we can actually establish. Afterwards, each of us will write a short paragraph. If our first choice is unavailable, we will choose a different public place where we can still practise careful description.” This is an invented planning model. Its value lies in a clear purpose, a sensible check and a worthwhile alternative.
Adapt the model to your own interests. Replace the general destination with a place you have genuinely researched. Add your own question, but keep uncertain access arrangements conditional. Read the result as if you were the person travelling with you: is the plan specific enough to follow, and does it leave a realistic amount of time to observe?
Model 2: explaining a difficult page
“At first I recognised the individual words but could not follow the paragraph. I stopped at the first definition and made a small example of my own. Then I identified which object the next sentence referred to. One step was still unclear, so I wrote a precise question instead of pretending to understand the whole passage. When I returned to the text, I could explain the beginning accurately and show exactly where I needed help.” This fictional reading reflection demonstrates a useful way to write about partial understanding without giving up or overstating what you know.
Choose one technical entry from this guide and try the same sequence. Explain the word in ordinary language, make a small example and identify a boundary on what the example establishes. Ask someone to read your explanation. If they misunderstand it, revise the sentence that caused the difficulty rather than adding several more unfamiliar terms.
Model 3: a woodland note with honest limits
“From the marked path, I saw a fallen trunk with small plants along its upper surface. I sketched the arrangement without stepping off the path. I did not know when the trunk fell or how conditions had changed, so I left those questions open. Later, I compared a reference explanation with my limited observations.” This fictional scene models an honest distinction between noticing a pattern and explaining its history.
Reference: US National Park Service
Try writing your own four-sentence note from a photograph or a safe outdoor viewpoint. Include the position of the observer, two visible details and one question. Avoid naming a species unless you have a reliable identification. The exercise works well even when the scene is ordinary, because precision comes from the relationship between the words and the evidence.
A retrieval routine that fits a short session
Choose five entries from one route. Cover the definitions and explain each word aloud in a single sentence. Then uncover the text and correct one important point. Next, choose two of the words for a short connected explanation. Finish by returning to the first word without looking. Keep the exercise small enough that you can notice and repair mistakes rather than rushing through a long list.
On a later occasion, change the setting of one example while preserving its meaning. A mathematical pairing might use books and shelves instead of people and seats. A forest-reading question might refer to a published diagram instead of a walk. Ask whether the new sentence still satisfies the definition. This is a practical test of understanding because it requires you to carry the relationship into a fresh situation.
Reference: Wolfram MathWorld
If you are helping a younger learner, invite them to choose the route and explain one word they genuinely find interesting. Listen for meaning before correcting every sound. Ask a follow-up question that makes the example more precise. A calm conversation about a few words can provide a useful starting point for later reading; there is no need to turn a family visit into an examination.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an everyday travel phrasebook?
It is a themed vocabulary and reading guide. The opening chapter helps with place names and planning questions; later chapters extend into the subjects connected with the guide’s learning routes. For immediate everyday needs, prepare practical phrases separately. Choose the sections that match your interests rather than assuming every advanced term is necessary for an enjoyable visit.
Do I need to understand all the mathematics?
No. You can begin with the named places and people, or practise just one small mathematical example. The definitions provide a way into further reading. If a term depends on several ideas you have not studied, mark it for later and move to an entry you can use confidently. Progress can mean asking a more exact question.
Are these examples records of real visits?
No. The sentences, conversations and model scenes are original teaching examples. Their purpose is to demonstrate natural usage and careful thinking. They do not establish that a particular visitor attended an event, that a venue offers a specific workshop or that the described woodland feature will be present on your route. Use official information to plan an actual visit.
How should I use the Chinese and pinyin?
Read the Chinese label to establish the intended meaning, then return to the English definition and example. The pinyin accompanies the Chinese label. The English headword is retained in parentheses within the Chinese example to make comparison easy. Cover one language and explain the idea in the other when you are ready, checking the meaning rather than translating every word mechanically.
Can a scientific term have an ordinary meaning too?
Yes, and context is your main guide. This article identifies the intended sense in each definition and note. When you meet the word elsewhere, check the subject and the surrounding sentence before carrying over the meaning. Build your own example with enough context that another reader can identify the intended use without guessing.
Do the sources confirm opening hours for my travel date?
Only a current check for your date can do that. The sources here support the place descriptions and vocabulary explanations, with research checked on 4 October 2026. A general information page, an archived event and a present-day booking confirmation have different purposes. Reopen the relevant official page before setting out, especially if a particular room or guided visit matters to your plan.
Can I use the forest entries to collect samples?
Use them to read, observe and ask better questions. Taking wood cores, removing plants or moving dead material involves permissions, site rules and practical risks. A vocabulary exercise does not establish those permissions. Stay within the arrangements of your visit and use published measurements or photographs for learning when direct access is inappropriate.
How can this become a strong piece of English writing?
Choose a clear purpose and a small amount of evidence. Introduce the setting, explain one relevant idea and show how an observation or question changed your understanding. Use specialist words only where they help the reader. After drafting, check names, factual claims and the difference between something you know and something you infer. End with a meaningful conclusion rather than a list of the words you managed to include.
