Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Parma is a connected English study guide for curious travellers, families and students. Begin with the chapter closest to your interest, then use the examples to move from recognising a word to explaining an idea. You do not need to finish all one hundred entries in one sitting.
The guide starts with named places, people and foods, then follows four questions: how does a food change, how should a scientific claim be read, how is a book made, and how does a musical instruction shape listening? Treat each chapter as a small investigation. Choose a few words that help answer your own question rather than collecting difficult vocabulary for its own sake.
Each entry gives an accessible pronunciation guide, a Simplified Chinese meaning with pinyin, an English definition, a bilingual example and a usage note. Pronunciations are approximate reading aids, not phonetic transcriptions; Italian names are respelled to help an English-speaking reader approach them. Chinese labels for local names are practical renderings. Examples are invented teaching scenes, not reports of actual visits or promises about a venue.

Before the words: Parma connections
A city with several entry points
Parma lies in Emilia-Romagna. The regional tourism authority connects the city with art, music and gastronomy, and records its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015. These connections explain the range of subjects in this guide; they do not imply that every scientific or musical term is unique to Parma.

One important dated access change
The Comune di Parma announcement dated 5 August 2026 states that the Camera di San Paolo would close from 31 August for conservation and safety works, with completion expected approximately in spring 2027. Checked on 4 October 2026, this is an expected works window, not a guaranteed reopening date. Consult the current municipal notice before planning access.

From a meal to a careful question
The European Food Safety Authority gives its address in Parma. Its presence provides a useful local connection for the chapter on reading food-risk language. The chapter teaches distinctions in public scientific explanations; it does not assess a particular meal, give a production recipe or replace professional advice.

Read the object, then the explanation
The Bodoni Museum introduces the making of printed books through books, tools and working processes. That provides the starting point for our book and page-layout chapters. Their practice activities extend beyond the museum’s stated displays, so a learning example should not be mistaken for a promise that a particular object will be on view.

1. Locate the place and choose the scale
Entries 1–10. Back to contents
Start with a simple map and a question. Which name identifies a city, which a square, which a building and which a neighbourhood? Mark those categories on your own page before drawing a route. For each proposed stop, leave a small space for an access check and another for the observation you want to make.
Piazza Duomo brings together the cathedral and baptistery, but the two buildings retain their separate identities. A location can be shared without a function being shared.

1. Parma
Say it: PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马 · pà ěr mǎ
Meaning: A city in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region whose food, art and music heritage offer connected subjects for study.
Example: Our Parma notebook began with four questions about food, pictures, books and music.
中文例句: 我们的帕尔马笔记本以四个关于食物、图画、书籍和音乐的问题开始。
Use it well: Use the city name as a precise starting point, then identify what your paragraph examines. A place name alone does not explain why an observation matters. You can write about Parma’s food culture or a museum in Parma, but distinguish the city from the surrounding province when describing a producer or another town.
Word reference: Emilia-Romagna Turismo
2. Piazza Duomo
Say it: pee-AT-tsah DWOH-moh
中文: 主教座堂广场 · zhǔ jiào zuò táng guǎng chǎng
Meaning: The square in Parma where the cathedral, baptistery and bishop’s palace form an important historic ensemble.
Example: “Let’s meet in Piazza Duomo, beside the building shown on this map,” Maya suggested.
中文例句: “我们在主教座堂广场见面吧,就在这张地图所示的建筑旁边,”玛雅建议道。
Use it well: Piazza Duomo occurs in several Italian cities, so add Parma when the location is not already clear. Treat the square as a relationship between buildings rather than one building with several names. In practical directions, supplement a large public meeting place with a clear reference point instead of assuming everyone means the same entrance.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
3. Parma Cathedral
Say it: PAR-mah kuh-THEE-druhl
中文: 帕尔马主教座堂 · pà ěr mǎ zhǔ jiào zuò táng
Meaning: Parma’s cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption, with a Romanesque building and a dome painted by Correggio.
Example: A photograph of Parma Cathedral helped us separate the building’s structure from its painted interior.
中文例句: 一张帕尔马主教座堂的照片帮助我们把建筑结构与内部绘画区分开来。
Use it well: The English name and the Italian Cattedrale di Parma identify the same church. Do not give every visible feature the date or style of the original structure: decoration can belong to another period. For descriptive writing, choose one feature and explain its position. A sentence about the dome should say what makes the painted space different from the physical surface.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
4. Baptistery of Parma
Say it: BAP-tis-tree ov PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马洗礼堂 · pà ěr mǎ xǐ lǐ táng
Meaning: The octagonal baptismal building beside Parma Cathedral, associated with Benedetto Antelami and faced with pink Verona stone.
Example: We traced the Baptistery of Parma on our sketch before adding the neighbouring cathedral.
中文例句: 我们先在草图上描出了帕尔马洗礼堂,再画上旁边的主教座堂。
Use it well: Keep this name separate from Parma Cathedral: the buildings stand together but have different functions. An octagonal plan has eight sides; that observation concerns shape rather than a complete account of style. When studying an image, distinguish what its angle reveals from what a plan or written source confirms. Do not count hidden sides from guesswork.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
5. Palazzo della Pilotta
Say it: pah-LAT-tsoh DEL-lah pee-LOT-tah
中文: 皮洛塔宫 · pí luò tǎ gōng
Meaning: A monumental palace complex in Parma containing several cultural institutions, including museums, a historic theatre and the Palatina library.
Example: The family chose one part of Palazzo della Pilotta to study instead of rushing through every collection.
中文例句: 这家人选择研究皮洛塔宫的一部分,而没有匆忙看完所有馆藏。
Use it well: A complex is a group of connected spaces, so its name should not be treated as the title of a single gallery. Establish which institution or room your account concerns. This helps a reader follow a route and also prevents a general building description from becoming an unsupported claim about every collection housed within it.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
6. Teatro Farnese
Say it: teh-AH-troh far-NEH-zeh
中文: 法尔内塞剧院 · fǎ ěr nèi sāi jù yuàn
Meaning: The historic theatre within the Pilotta complex, built for the Farnese court and inaugurated in 1628.
Example: Our drawing of Teatro Farnese focused on the relationship between the performance area and the audience space.
中文例句: 我们绘制法尔内塞剧院时,重点表现了表演区与观众区之间的关系。
Use it well: Keep Teatro Farnese distinct from Teatro Regio di Parma. Their shared theatrical purpose does not make their buildings, histories or visitor arrangements interchangeable. An account can discuss how spectators face the action without inventing a performance that happened there. If you describe a photograph, identify it as a photograph rather than imply that you attended a show.
Word reference: Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta
7. Teatro Regio di Parma
Say it: teh-AH-troh REH-joh dee PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马皇家剧院 · pà ěr mǎ huáng jiā jù yuàn
Meaning: Parma’s opera theatre, commissioned by Duchess Maria Luigia and opened in 1829.
Example: Before booking, Arun checked whether the Teatro Regio di Parma event was a performance or a guided visit.
中文例句: 预订之前,阿伦核实帕尔马皇家剧院的活动是演出还是导览。
Use it well: Retain the full venue name when comparing programmes or making notes about tickets. A visit to a theatre and attendance at an opera are different experiences, with different arrangements. In cultural writing, link the institution to the activity you are discussing. A grand interior can be described visually; a claim about its sound requires evidence from listening or an appropriate source.
Word reference: Fondazione Teatro Regio di Parma
8. Camera di San Paolo
Say it: KAH-meh-rah dee san PAH-oh-loh
中文: 圣保罗修道院画室 · shèng bǎo luó xiū dào yuàn huà shì
Meaning: The celebrated room decorated by Correggio in Parma’s former San Paolo convent, also known as the abbess’s chamber.
Example: The Camera di San Paolo remained in our reading project even after we changed the proposed visit.
中文例句: 即使我们更改了拟议的参观安排,圣保罗修道院画室仍然是阅读项目的一部分。
Use it well: Camera means room in this Italian name, not a photographic device. A historic site can remain a useful study subject while access is restricted. Separate the description of the artwork from the dated visitor notice in this guide. When reporting future arrangements, use expected or planned only when those words reflect the source’s degree of certainty.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
9. Parco Ducale
Say it: PAR-koh doo-KAH-leh
中文: 公爵公园 · gōng jué gōng yuán
Meaning: Parma’s historic ducal park, with designed avenues, sculptural features and buildings connected with the city’s courtly past.
Example: In our proposed afternoon, Parco Ducale provided time to sit, sketch and compare notes.
中文例句: 在我们拟定的下午安排中,公爵公园让大家有时间坐下、画草图和交换笔记。
Use it well: An organised landscape is not simply an empty space between monuments. Describe the arrangement of paths, trees or focal points before judging the atmosphere. The word ducal connects the name with a duke’s court; it does not say who manages every service today. A plan for a rest stop should remain flexible around actual access and conditions.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
10. Oltretorrente
Say it: ol-treh-tor-REN-teh
中文: 河西老城区 · hé xī lǎo chéng qū
Meaning: A historic neighbourhood of Parma across the Parma watercourse from the central historic core.
Example: We added Oltretorrente to the map so our account would not reduce Parma to one square.
中文例句: 我们把河西老城区加到地图上,以免把帕尔马的介绍局限于一个广场。
Use it well: Use this as a neighbourhood name, not as a label for every place outside the city centre. The name carries a spatial relationship that is easiest to understand with a map. In a travel paragraph, describe the transition between areas. Avoid treating a neighbourhood as a single personality or assuming all its residents share one story.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
Put the distinction to work
Write a three-sentence route that starts at a named meeting place, identifies one object of study and ends with a flexible rest stop. Avoid invented journey times. Ask a partner to point to each place on a map. If the partner cannot tell whether a name refers to a whole complex or one room, revise that sentence.
Use Palazzo della Pilotta for the containing complex and Teatro Farnese for the historic theatre within it. That distinction makes both directions and cultural descriptions clearer.

2. Connect a person with a role
Entries 11–20. Back to contents
A list of famous names becomes useful when every name does a job in an explanation. Make a small card with three spaces: person, activity and evidence. Put a question mark beside any claim you have not checked. Your aim is to show a relationship that the reader can follow, rather than prove that you can remember a long sequence of names.
Giambattista Bodoni worked as a printer and type designer. Giuseppe Verdi was a composer, while Arturo Toscanini was a conductor. Their activities invite different questions.

11. Giambattista Bodoni
Say it: jam-bat-TEES-tah boh-DOH-nee
中文: 詹巴蒂斯塔·博多尼 · zhān bā dì sī tǎ bó duō ní
Meaning: The printer, type designer and publisher who directed Parma’s ducal printing house from 1768.
Example: Studying Giambattista Bodoni made Lena notice how letter shapes influence the appearance of a page.
中文例句: 研究詹巴蒂斯塔·博多尼,让莉娜注意到字母形状如何影响页面的外观。
Use it well: Bodoni can name a historical person or a typeface associated with his name, so make the reference clear. A claim about his working life differs from an observation about a modern font. When introducing him, give the activity relevant to your argument rather than stacking impressive titles. Printer and designer describe related but distinct responsibilities.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
12. Bodoni Museum
Say it: boh-DOH-nee myoo-ZEE-uhm
中文: 博多尼博物馆 · bó duō ní bó wù guǎn
Meaning: The Parma museum devoted to Bodoni’s printing work, books, documents and tools within the Pilotta complex.
Example: The Bodoni Museum gave our project a reason to examine a book as a made object.
中文例句: 博多尼博物馆让我们的项目有理由把书看作一件制作出来的物品。
Use it well: The museum’s subject opens a route from finished pages to the decisions and equipment behind them. In a report, distinguish an original object from a reconstruction or digital display when the label provides that information. Do not assume that every bookmaking term in this guide names something currently exhibited. The vocabulary also supports comparison and independent reading.
Word reference: Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta
13. Biblioteca Palatina
Say it: bee-blee-oh-TEH-kah pah-lah-TEE-nah
中文: 帕拉蒂纳图书馆 · pà lā dì nà tú shū guǎn
Meaning: The historic library in Parma’s Pilotta complex, established in the eighteenth century as a public cultural resource.
Example: For the Biblioteca Palatina section, our group separated the library’s history from questions about using its collections.
中文例句: 在帕拉蒂纳图书馆这一部分,我们把图书馆的历史与使用馆藏的问题分开讨论。
Use it well: A library may be both a heritage destination and a place of research. Seeing a historic room does not establish permission to handle or consult particular books. Use separate sentences for the institution’s role and the arrangements you need to check. When working with a catalogue, copy identifying details carefully instead of relying on a familiar-looking title.
Word reference: Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta
14. Giuseppe Verdi
Say it: joo-ZEP-peh VER-dee
中文: 朱塞佩·威尔第 · zhū sāi pèi wēi ěr dì
Meaning: The Italian opera composer born in Roncole near Busseto in 1813, closely associated with the wider Parma area.
Example: A chapter about Giuseppe Verdi led us from a place name to questions about musical drama.
中文例句: 关于朱塞佩·威尔第的一章,把我们从一个地名引向了有关音乐戏剧的问题。
Use it well: Be geographically precise: a connection with Parma’s wider territory does not mean birth in the city itself. The composer’s name can introduce a work, a festival or a biographical question, but specify which one. A useful response to an opera explains what a musical choice contributes to the scene instead of treating the composer’s reputation as the explanation.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
15. Arturo Toscanini
Say it: ar-TOO-roh tos-kah-NEE-nee
中文: 阿尔图罗·托斯卡尼尼 · ā ěr tú luó tuō sī kǎ ní ní
Meaning: The conductor born in Parma in 1867 whose birthplace is preserved as a museum.
Example: Arturo Toscanini became the starting point for our discussion of how a conductor shapes an ensemble.
中文例句: 阿尔图罗·托斯卡尼尼成为我们讨论指挥如何塑造合奏的起点。
Use it well: A conductor interprets and coordinates a performance; that role should not automatically be described as composing the piece. When writing about a famous musician, identify whether your evidence concerns a life event, a recording or an interpretation. Avoid turning a single anecdote into a complete judgement of a person’s career, and attribute historical claims to their sources.
Word reference: Comune di Parma · Comune di Parma
16. Correggio
Say it: kor-RED-joh
中文: 科雷乔 · kē léi qiáo
Meaning: The painter Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, whose important works in Parma include major interior decorations.
Example: We used Correggio as an artist’s name in the caption, then named the particular work we were studying.
中文例句: 我们在图注中用科雷乔作为画家的名字,再写明正在研究的具体作品。
Use it well: Correggio also names the painter’s hometown, so context determines whether the word refers to a person or a place. In an art paragraph, do not let the artist’s name replace description. State what the image shows, where your attention moves and which interpretation you can support. Different works by one artist need not have identical purposes or effects.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
17. Parmigianino
Say it: par-mee-jah-NEE-noh
中文: 帕尔米贾尼诺 · pà ěr mǐ jiǎ ní nuò
Meaning: The painter Francesco Mazzola, known as Parmigianino, an important artist connected with Parma and sixteenth-century Italian art.
Example: A reproduction of a work by Parmigianino prompted us to compare the figure’s proportions with its setting.
中文例句: 一幅帕尔米贾尼诺作品的复制图,让我们比较人物的比例与周围环境。
Use it well: Do not confuse the painter’s name with the name of a cheese. A clear first sentence can supply Francesco Mazzola and the familiar name together. Describe elongation or arrangement only where the selected image supports it; a stylistic reputation does not license the same description of every work. Separate the artwork’s present location from the artist’s connection with Parma.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
18. Benedetto Antelami
Say it: beh-neh-DET-toh an-teh-LAH-mee
中文: 贝内代托·安特拉米 · bèi nèi dài tuō ān tè lā mǐ
Meaning: The medieval sculptor and architect associated with important work at Parma’s cathedral and baptistery.
Example: We wrote “Benedetto Antelami” beside the sculpture reference, then checked what the attribution actually claimed.
中文例句: 我们在雕塑资料旁写下“贝内代托·安特拉米”,然后核实作者归属究竟是如何表述的。
Use it well: Medieval biographies can contain gaps, and a confident name on a modern worksheet should not erase them. Distinguish documented work, an attribution and work associated with a workshop. These phrases express different strengths of evidence. When describing sculpture, connect the person’s name to the particular object rather than imply that one artist made everything in the building.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
19. Duchy of Parma
Say it: DUCH-ee ov PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马公国 · pà ěr mǎ gōng guó
Meaning: The historical state centred on Parma, governed by successive rulers before its territory joined the developing Italian state in the nineteenth century.
Example: The Duchy of Parma belonged on our historical timeline rather than on a map of present-day sovereign states.
中文例句: 帕尔马公国应放在我们的历史时间线上,而不是当今主权国家的地图上。
Use it well: Duchy describes a political territory ruled by a duke or duchess. Its boundaries and rulers can change over time, so give the period relevant to your sentence. Do not assume that a historical state corresponds exactly to a modern province. A timeline should separate a change of dynasty from a change in the state’s wider political status.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
20. Maria Luigia
Say it: mah-REE-ah loo-EE-jah
中文: 玛丽亚·路易吉娅 · mǎ lì yà lù yì jí yà
Meaning: The duchess who ruled Parma from 1816 to 1847 and is associated with major nineteenth-century civic and cultural projects.
Example: Our Maria Luigia paragraph connected one commission with its purpose instead of listing every event in her life.
中文例句: 我们关于玛丽亚·路易吉娅的段落,把一项委建工程与其目的联系起来,而没有罗列她一生中的所有事件。
Use it well: English sources may call her Marie Louise. Record variant names so that you can recognise the same person across languages. Distinguish commissioning a building from designing it: patronage and architectural authorship are not identical. A focused paragraph can examine one project and its context more clearly than a compressed biography containing names the reader cannot connect.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
Put the distinction to work
Choose one person and write a focused caption for a hypothetical classroom display. In the first sentence identify the person. In the second explain why that person belongs in this display. In the third say which object or source your reader should examine next. Do not claim that your invented display exists in a real museum.
Maria Luigia’s role in commissioning the Teatro Regio illustrates patronage. Commissioning a building and designing it are different kinds of contribution, so your verbs should preserve the distinction.

3. Read named foods without guessing
Entries 21–30. Back to contents
A useful food description gives another person enough information to ask a good next question. Start with the name, then explain the food in ordinary English. Keep a space for ingredients that need checking. In a family exercise, take turns being the reader and the person asking for clarification; neither role needs to pretend to know an unavailable recipe.
Tortelli d’erbetta and anolini are both filled pasta, but the named preparations should not disappear into one generic label. Explain the particular dish being discussed.
Reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome · Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
21. Prosciutto di Parma
Say it: proh-SHOOT-toh dee PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马火腿 · pà ěr mǎ huǒ tuǐ
Meaning: A protected Italian dry-cured ham made under the production requirements associated with the Parma designation.
Example: “Is this Prosciutto di Parma?” Jia asked, reading the product name before choosing a portion.
中文例句: “这是帕尔马火腿吗?”佳在选择一份之前,先看了产品名称。
Use it well: Use the full designation when that specific product matters; not every cured ham is entitled to it. A geographical name on a menu is a claim about identity, rather than a complete ingredient or dietary statement. When ordering, ask separately about the actual dish and its accompanying ingredients. Vocabulary knowledge cannot replace the producer’s label or the staff’s information.
Word reference: Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma · Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma
22. Culatello di Zibello
Say it: koo-lah-TEL-loh dee dzee-BEL-loh
中文: 齐贝洛臀心火腿 · qí bèi luò tún xīn huǒ tuǐ
Meaning: A protected cured pork speciality from the Zibello area, made from a selected part of the hind leg.
Example: The tasting sheet kept Culatello di Zibello separate from the other cured meats instead of calling everything ham.
中文例句: 品尝记录把齐贝洛臀心火腿与其他腌制肉品分开,而没有把它们统称为火腿。
Use it well: The specific name helps you recognise a distinct product rather than a generic category. In a comparison, state what the label establishes and what you personally observe. A description such as delicate records a judgement about the sample, not a measurable fact about every producer. Preserve the geographical wording when noting where a product claims its identity.
Word reference: Italian Ministry of Agriculture
23. tortelli d’erbetta
Say it: tor-TEL-lee der-BET-tah
中文: 绿叶菜乳酪馅意饺 · lǜ yè cài rǔ lào xiàn yì jiǎo
Meaning: Filled pasta associated with Parma, typically containing ricotta and leafy greens and served with butter and grated cheese.
Example: Mum chose tortelli d’erbetta after asking which greens the kitchen had used in the filling.
中文例句: 妈妈询问厨房用了哪种绿叶菜做馅后,选择了绿叶菜乳酪馅意饺。
Use it well: The name identifies a particular preparation, not an instruction to translate erbetta literally as one fixed herb. Menus and households can vary the greens or details. In English, use the Italian name and then explain the filling for an unfamiliar reader. Keep ingredients, cooking method and serving sauce in separate phrases so the description remains easy to follow.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
24. anolini
Say it: ah-noh-LEE-nee
中文: 阿诺利尼馅意饺 · ā nuò lì ní xiàn yì jiǎo
Meaning: Small filled pasta associated with Parma and neighbouring areas, commonly presented in broth in the Parma tradition.
Example: The bowl of anolini in our imagined menu came with a question about the filling and the broth.
中文例句: 在我们设想的菜单中,一碗阿诺利尼馅意饺旁附有一个关于馅料和汤底的问题。
Use it well: The plural Italian name usually refers to the dish as a serving, so a bowl of anolini sounds natural in English. Do not infer every ingredient from the name alone. In a menu-reading exercise, distinguish the filling inside the pasta from the liquid around it. A regional tradition can include several recipes without making their names meaningless.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
25. spongata
Say it: spon-GAH-tah
中文: 蜂蜜坚果馅甜饼 · fēng mì jiān guǒ xiàn tián bǐng
Meaning: A traditional filled sweet pastry of the wider Parma and Emilia area, combining a pastry casing with a rich mixture including honey and nuts.
Example: We divided a slice of spongata in our story and compared the casing with the textured filling.
中文例句: 在故事中,我们分了一片蜂蜜坚果馅甜饼,并比较了外皮与有颗粒感的馅料。
Use it well: Keep the name when identifying the local sweet, then explain its structure rather than replacing it with the vague word cake. Recipes vary, so mention only ingredients confirmed for the version you mean. A festive association does not prove that an item is available on every date. For a descriptive paragraph, contrast outside and inside before giving a personal judgement.
Word reference: Regione Emilia-Romagna
26. Spalla Cotta di San Secondo
Say it: SPAL-lah KOT-tah dee san seh-KON-doh
中文: 圣塞孔多熟猪肩肉 · shèng sāi kǒng duō shú zhū jiān ròu
Meaning: A Parma-area pork-shoulder speciality that is salted and matured before being cooked, traditionally with wine and aromatics.
Example: The menu distinguished Spalla Cotta di San Secondo from the uncooked cured meats on the same page.
中文例句: 菜单把圣塞孔多熟猪肩肉与同一页上的未烹熟腌制肉品区分开来。
Use it well: Cotta signals cooked in the product name, while spalla refers to the shoulder. These components help you read the label but do not tell you every detail of service. Ask whether the portion is served warm and what accompanies it. In a process paragraph, preserve the sequence: the existence of a curing stage does not mean there is no later cooking stage.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
27. Salame Felino
Say it: sah-LAH-meh feh-LEE-noh
中文: 费利诺萨拉米香肠 · fèi lì nuò sà lā mǐ xiāng cháng
Meaning: A protected geographical-indication salami associated with Felino and the Parma area.
Example: We copied Salame Felino from the label so that our comparison named the product precisely.
中文例句: 我们从标签抄下费利诺萨拉米香肠的名称,以便准确比较产品。
Use it well: Felino is a place name here, not an English description related to cats. Retaining the complete name avoids an unfortunate literal translation. When comparing slices, distinguish the product designation from an individual serving’s appearance. A label can establish what the maker calls the product; tasting language should describe your response without claiming that one adjective is universally agreed.
Word reference: Italian Ministry of Agriculture
28. Coppa di Parma
Say it: KOP-pah dee PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马风干猪颈肉 · pà ěr mǎ fēng gān zhū jǐng ròu
Meaning: A protected geographical-indication cured pork product associated with Parma, made from meat from the neck region.
Example: Our food glossary placed Coppa di Parma beside an explanation of the cut rather than a picture alone.
中文例句: 我们的食物词汇表在帕尔马风干猪颈肉旁写明了所用部位,而不仅仅放一张图片。
Use it well: Coppa can have other meanings in Italian, so its food context matters. The full designation identifies a product, while the anatomical explanation tells an unfamiliar reader what it is made from. Avoid translating the name as cup. In English, a few slices of Coppa di Parma is a useful serving phrase that keeps the named food intact.
Word reference: Consorzio di Tutela della Coppa di Parma IGP
29. Savarin di riso
Say it: sah-vah-RAN dee REE-zoh
中文: 环形米饭料理 · huán xíng mǐ fàn liào lǐ
Meaning: A savoury moulded rice preparation associated with Parma restaurant cooking, presented with fillings or accompaniments that vary by recipe.
Example: The Savarin di riso description made us ask what was inside the moulded rice and what was served around it.
中文例句: 环形米饭料理的介绍让我们询问:成形的米饭里面是什么,周围又搭配了什么。
Use it well: Riso means rice, so do not mistake this dish for a sweet savarin cake simply because part of the name is shared. A dish name may indicate a form while leaving considerable room for recipe variation. Describe the version in front of you, naming components confirmed by the menu. Keep a restaurant’s particular preparation distinct from a universal recipe claim.
Word reference: Conad recipe team · Consorzio Parma Quality Restaurants
30. Rosa di Parma
Say it: ROH-zah dee PAR-mah
中文: 帕尔马玫瑰牛肉卷 · pà ěr mǎ méi guī niú ròu juǎn
Meaning: A Parma-style beef preparation rolled around a filling that commonly includes local ham and cheese.
Example: Rosa di Parma sounded like a flower until the menu explained the rolled beef and its filling.
中文例句: 帕尔马玫瑰牛肉卷的名字听起来像花,直到菜单解释了牛肉卷和里面的馅料。
Use it well: A metaphorical dish name does not list its ingredients. Preserve the Italian title and add a plain explanation of the food, especially for readers who may interpret rosa botanically. Do not use the name alone to make a dietary claim. In descriptive writing, connect the visual idea of a rose to the sliced arrangement only when the actual presentation supports it.
Word reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
Put the distinction to work
Draft a short menu note for an imaginary meal. Include one question about the main component, one about an accompaniment and one about a preparation detail that the name does not settle. Do not invent a restaurant’s answer. A good question is useful because it exposes a gap honestly, not because it makes the speaker sound sophisticated.
Spalla Cotta di San Secondo includes a cooking stage. Coppa di Parma is a different cured pork product, made from the neck region. Product names preserve these distinctions.

4. Follow a change in milk
Entries 31–40. Back to contents
Read a process paragraph with a pencil. Underline the material, circle the action and put a box around the condition. If you cannot identify all three, ask what the sentence leaves unstated. Keep this as a reading exercise: technical vocabulary can help you understand an account without turning that account into instructions for making food at home.
Casein names milk proteins, while lactose names milk sugar. Separating substances before discussing processes prevents a scientific paragraph from sliding between different subjects.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
31. rennet
Say it: REN-it
中文: 凝乳酶制剂 · níng rǔ méi zhì jì
Meaning: An enzyme-containing preparation used to make milk form curds during cheesemaking.
Example: The demonstration card named rennet at the point where the milk began to set.
中文例句: 示范卡在牛奶开始凝结的步骤标出了凝乳酶制剂。
Use it well: Rennet names a preparation, not the finished cheese. Use add rennet or coagulate milk with rennet when describing its role. Do not infer the preparation’s source from the word alone, because a product description needs more detail. A clear process explanation distinguishes an ingredient that helps cause a change from the changed material that results.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
32. casein
Say it: KAY-seen
中文: 酪蛋白 · lào dàn bái
Meaning: A principal group of proteins in milk that contributes importantly to the formation of cheese curds.
Example: Our diagram labelled casein as protein, keeping it separate from the milk sugar.
中文例句: 我们的图表把酪蛋白标为蛋白质,并把它与乳糖分开。
Use it well: Casein is the substance name; it is not a general synonym for cheese or for every component of milk. Use casein proteins when you need to emphasise the group. In a science paragraph, explain which material is being studied before describing its behaviour. A food’s familiar appearance does not reveal the identity or quantity of all its proteins.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
33. proteolysis
Say it: proh-tee-OL-ih-sis
中文: 蛋白质水解 · dàn bái zhì shuǐ jiě
Meaning: The breakdown of proteins or peptides into smaller products through hydrolysis.
Example: The researcher used proteolysis to explain why the protein molecules in the model did not remain unchanged.
中文例句: 研究者用蛋白质水解来解释模型中的蛋白质分子为什么不会保持不变。
Use it well: The ending names a process, so write proteolysis occurs or the extent of proteolysis. Do not use it as the name of a substance. Identify the protein and the conditions when your source supplies them. A general definition does not establish how quickly a particular cheese changes, or prove that one visible feature has only one possible explanation.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
34. lipolysis
Say it: lye-POL-ih-sis
中文: 脂肪水解 · zhī fáng shuǐ jiě
Meaning: The hydrolytic breakdown of fats into smaller chemical components.
Example: Our second process arrow showed lipolysis acting on fat rather than on the protein in the first diagram.
中文例句: 第二个过程箭头显示脂肪水解作用于脂肪,而不是第一张图中的蛋白质。
Use it well: The first part of the word points to fat, which helps keep it distinct from a protein-related process. In explanatory English, specify what undergoes lipolysis instead of saying only that a food changes. Avoid turning a molecular process into a broad health promise. This term describes chemistry; it does not by itself establish a product’s nutritional value or safety.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
35. tyrosine
Say it: TYE-ruh-seen
中文: 酪氨酸 · lào ān suān
Meaning: An amino acid found in proteins and used by organisms in producing several other important substances.
Example: The glossary identified tyrosine as an amino acid before the group tried to interpret the longer research passage.
中文例句: 小组在解读较长的研究文章之前,先通过词汇表确认酪氨酸是一种氨基酸。
Use it well: Keep tyrosine distinct from casein: one names an amino acid, while the other names milk proteins. A precise scientific sentence tells the reader what level of organisation it concerns. Do not identify an unknown crystal or ingredient merely because its appearance seems familiar. The term is useful for reading an explanation, but identification still depends on appropriate evidence.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
36. lactose
Say it: LAK-tohs
中文: 乳糖 · rǔ táng
Meaning: The naturally occurring disaccharide sugar in milk, which can be broken down into glucose and galactose.
Example: Lactose appeared in the sugar column of our chart rather than the protein column.
中文例句: 乳糖出现在图表的糖类栏,而不是蛋白质栏。
Use it well: Use lactose as a substance name, normally without an indefinite article. The word does not mean all dairy ingredients, and a statement about this sugar is not a statement about milk proteins. In a reading task, preserve the exact scope of any label claim. Ask for current product information rather than extending one fact about a substance to an entire dish.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
37. starter culture
Say it: STAR-ter KUL-chur
中文: 发酵菌种 · fā jiào jūn zhǒng
Meaning: A preparation containing selected microorganisms introduced to begin or guide a fermentation process.
Example: The dairy worksheet identified the starter culture before describing the changes it was intended to encourage.
中文例句: 乳品学习单先说明了发酵菌种,再描述希望借此产生的变化。
Use it well: Culture here refers to microorganisms, not to music, customs or a museum collection. A starter culture is selected for a particular product and process, so avoid describing all cultures as interchangeable. In a sequence paragraph, distinguish the introduction of the culture from the later changes. This vocabulary lesson is not a recipe or an instruction to improvise food production.
Word reference: Food and Agriculture Organization
38. thermisation
Say it: thur-mih-ZAY-shun
中文: 温和热处理 · wēn hé rè chǔ lǐ
Meaning: A relatively mild heat treatment used in milk processing, distinct from a full pasteurisation treatment.
Example: The source called the step thermisation, so we did not silently relabel it as pasteurisation.
中文例句: 资料把这一工序称为温和热处理,因此我们没有擅自把它改称为巴氏杀菌。
Use it well: A technical process name carries a narrower meaning than the everyday verb heat. Preserve the author’s terminology and any stated conditions rather than assume that all heat treatments achieve the same result. If time and temperature are important to a comparison, quote neither from memory. Reading the word accurately does not qualify a reader to set a safe production process.
Word reference: Tetra Pak
39. mesophilic
Say it: mez-oh-FIL-ik
中文: 嗜中温的 · shì zhōng wēn de
Meaning: Describing microorganisms that grow best at moderate temperatures rather than at temperature extremes.
Example: The diagram grouped the mesophilic organisms by their preferred growth conditions.
中文例句: 这张图按适宜的生长条件对嗜中温微生物进行了分组。
Use it well: This is an adjective: mesophilic bacteria is complete, while a mesophilic usually needs a following noun. Moderate is relative to the biological classification, not a promise that any comfortable room suits every organism. Keep a specific temperature range attached to the organism and source that give it. The label describes growth preference rather than usefulness, danger or nutritional quality.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
40. thermophilic
Say it: thur-moh-FIL-ik
中文: 嗜热的 · shì rè de
Meaning: Describing organisms adapted to living or growing at comparatively high temperatures.
Example: The thermophilic group occupied a different part of our temperature chart from the moderate-temperature group.
中文例句: 在温度图上,嗜热类群与中温类群处于不同的区域。
Use it well: Do not translate the term simply as heat-resistant: growing well under warm conditions is a more specific idea than merely surviving heat. Use it with the organism or process being discussed. A classroom contrast can show categories without prescribing a production temperature. When a source supplies numerical conditions, retain their units and avoid extending them to unrelated microorganisms.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Make two arrows on paper and label what each arrow acts upon. Then write a sentence for each arrow using a process noun as its subject. Read both sentences aloud. The reader should be able to tell what changes without having to infer the material from a previous paragraph. Add no numerical conditions unless a source supplies them.
Proteolysis concerns protein breakdown; lipolysis concerns fat breakdown. The similar endings identify processes, but the beginnings direct attention to different materials.

5. Separate composition from judgement
Entries 41–50. Back to contents
A tasting impression and a chemistry label can both be useful, but they answer different questions. Divide a notebook page into “what the source identifies” and “what the observer reports”. In a fictional exercise, give each statement an owner. That habit helps you avoid presenting a personal response as if it were a measurement or a complete account of the food.
Palatability concerns how acceptable a food is to eat. Oleic acid names a chemical substance. One term cannot substitute for the other when explaining a product.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
41. palatability
Say it: pal-uh-tuh-BIL-ih-tee
中文: 适口性 · shì kǒu xìng
Meaning: The quality of being pleasant or acceptable to taste and eat.
Example: The tasting discussion separated palatability from the question of how the food had been produced.
中文例句: 品尝讨论把适口性与食物如何生产的问题分开。
Use it well: Palatability concerns acceptance by an eater, rather than the complete chemical composition of a food. Use increased palatability only when your comparison explains whose response was measured or described. In personal writing, make the viewpoint clear. A dish can be pleasant to one person and less appealing to another without either response proving a universal ranking.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
42. chymosin
Say it: KYE-moh-sin
中文: 凝乳酶 · níng rǔ méi
Meaning: A specific milk-clotting enzyme, also called rennin, used in cheesemaking.
Example: The technical note identified chymosin as an enzyme rather than naming the whole preparation added to the milk.
中文例句: 技术说明把凝乳酶确认为一种酶,而不是用它来指代加入牛奶的整种制剂。
Use it well: Keep the individual enzyme distinct from rennet, the preparation that may contain it. This is the difference between naming an active component and naming the material used in a process. The alternative name rennin has two consecutive n letters; do not confuse it with the different term renin. Precise spelling protects a chemical explanation from an unintended change of subject.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
43. rancidity
Say it: ran-SID-ih-tee
中文: 酸败 · suān bài
Meaning: An unpleasant deterioration in the smell or taste of fats or fatty foods associated with chemical change.
Example: The training text discussed rancidity as a quality defect rather than as a desirable strong flavour.
中文例句: 培训材料把酸败作为质量缺陷来讨论,而没有把它当作令人喜爱的浓烈风味。
Use it well: Use rancidity for the condition and rancid for the adjective. A strong aroma alone is not enough to identify its cause, so do not label an unfamiliar food from a brief impression. For a vocabulary exercise, explain the term from a reliable description. Never taste food you suspect is spoiled merely to test whether you can apply a word.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
44. oleic acid
Say it: oh-LEE-ik AS-id
中文: 油酸 · yóu suān
Meaning: A monounsaturated fatty acid present in many natural fats and oils.
Example: Oleic acid was one named component in the chemistry table, not the name of the oil as a whole.
中文例句: 油酸是化学表中的一种成分名称,而不是整种油的名称。
Use it well: The phrase identifies a particular fatty acid, so retain both words. An oil is a mixture, and naming one component does not describe all of its properties. In a comparison, distinguish presence from proportion: contains does not tell you how much. Avoid deriving a personal health recommendation from a composition term without the broader evidence needed for that judgement.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
45. linoleic acid
Say it: lin-oh-LEE-ik AS-id
中文: 亚油酸 · yà yóu suān
Meaning: An unsaturated fatty acid found in many oils and important in nutrition.
Example: We checked the spelling of linoleic acid before copying it into the comparison with other fatty acids.
中文例句: 把亚油酸写进脂肪酸比较表之前,我们先核对了它的英文拼写。
Use it well: Linoleic and oleic look similar but identify different chemical substances. Do not shorten both to the same vague word when their identity matters. A strong scientific sentence states the comparison being made, such as chemical composition or measured proportion. The appearance of an unfamiliar chemical name in a food discussion is not itself evidence that the substance is harmful.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
46. stearic acid
Say it: stee-AIR-ik AS-id
中文: 硬脂酸 · yìng zhī suān
Meaning: A fatty acid commonly obtained from hard fats and appearing as a white crystalline substance in its pure form.
Example: The reference described stearic acid as a substance, while our sample description concerned a mixture of fats.
中文例句: 参考资料把硬脂酸作为一种物质来描述,而我们的样品描述涉及多种脂肪的混合物。
Use it well: Keep the pure substance separate from the food or commercial mixture containing it. A property given for a purified material cannot automatically describe a whole product. When reading a label or research table, identify the units and the stated form. The term can occur beyond food science, so let the surrounding sentence establish why it appears in your discussion.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
47. collagen
Say it: KOL-uh-jen
中文: 胶原蛋白 · jiāo yuán dàn bái
Meaning: A group of fibrous structural proteins found in animal connective tissues and other parts of the body.
Example: The diagram used collagen to label a structural protein rather than a colour pigment.
中文例句: 这张图用胶原蛋白标示一种结构蛋白,而不是一种色素。
Use it well: Collagen is not a synonym for every protein in meat. Its structural role makes it useful in explanations about tissue, but a sentence still needs to specify the material being discussed. Do not turn a vocabulary definition into a claim about a supplement’s benefits. In food writing, use a reliable process source before explaining what a particular cooking treatment does to it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
48. myoglobin
Say it: mye-oh-GLOH-bin
中文: 肌红蛋白 · jī hóng dàn bái
Meaning: An iron-containing protein pigment in muscle, related to but distinct from the haemoglobin found in blood.
Example: Myoglobin helped explain why the discussion of meat colour needed a more precise term than red liquid.
中文例句: 肌红蛋白帮助我们理解,讨论肉的颜色时,为什么需要比“红色液体”更准确的词。
Use it well: The prefix myo points towards muscle, which is a useful memory cue. Do not collapse muscle pigment and blood pigment into one label. The presence of a colour-related protein does not make visual appearance a complete test of food safety. In an explanatory paragraph, identify what the protein is before discussing a change that another source has actually established.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
49. nitrite
Say it: NYE-tryte
中文: 亚硝酸盐 · yà xiāo suān yán
Meaning: A salt of nitrous acid; in food discussions the term commonly identifies a particular class of chemical compounds.
Example: Our glossary kept nitrite and the similar-looking term in separate rows so the labels could not be confused.
中文例句: 我们的词汇表把亚硝酸盐与那个拼写相似的词放在不同的行,避免混淆标签。
Use it well: The ending matters: nitrite and nitrate are not interchangeable spellings. In a chemistry passage, preserve the specific compound name rather than infer it from a partial word. A general vocabulary entry is not a statement that a named food contains that substance. For an actual product, use its current ingredient information and the relevant authoritative assessment.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
50. nitrate
Say it: NYE-trayte
中文: 硝酸盐 · xiāo suān yán
Meaning: A salt of nitric acid, chemically distinct from a nitrite.
Example: The student corrected nitrate in the notes only after checking that the source really named that compound.
中文例句: 学生核实原文确实写的是这种化合物后,才修改了笔记中的“硝酸盐”。
Use it well: Read the final syllable carefully when moving between spoken and written English. A one-vowel difference can change the substance being discussed. The plural nitrates can refer to a class of compounds, but it does not erase their individual identities. When comparing a table with a summary, check that the summary has not replaced one chemical name with another.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Choose two similar-looking scientific names and copy them carefully before writing your explanation. Ask a partner to read your sentence back. If the spelling changes in the retelling, point to the exact syllable that carries the difference. Then make the sentence shorter without removing the substance’s identity. Precision does not require an unnecessarily complicated style.
Nitrite and nitrate name different classes of compounds. Collagen and myoglobin also identify different proteins; their similar scientific appearance is not evidence of identical roles.

6. Ask what a food-risk statement establishes
Entries 51–60. Back to contents
When reading a scientific statement, write its question in the margin. Is it asking what might cause harm, how much people encounter, or what conclusion follows? Preserve uncertainty words instead of deleting them to make the summary sound firmer. A student summary should be shorter than the source while still answering the same question.
Exposure assessment examines the amount of contact with a hazard. Hazard characterisation examines harmful effects. Risk characterisation brings such evidence together to support a conclusion.

51. foodborne
Say it: FOOD-born
中文: 食源性的 · shí yuán xìng de
Meaning: Carried or transmitted through food, especially when describing illness or disease-causing agents.
Example: The report described a foodborne illness, but our summary did not invent the food responsible.
中文例句: 报告描述了一种食源性疾病,但我们的摘要没有虚构致病食物。
Use it well: Foodborne is an adjective, so attach it to a suitable noun such as illness or pathogen. It describes a route of transmission rather than naming a particular organism. In a factual account, distinguish a confirmed link from a possibility being investigated. A broad category is not evidence against a restaurant, producer or ingredient mentioned elsewhere in the same article.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
52. adulteration
Say it: uh-dul-tuh-RAY-shun
中文: 掺假 · chān jiǎ
Meaning: The act or condition of making a substance impure or inferior through the addition or substitution of other material.
Example: The hypothetical investigation examined adulteration only after comparing the product claim with the analytical evidence.
中文例句: 这项假设调查先比较产品声明与分析证据,然后才研究是否存在掺假。
Use it well: In general English, the word concerns compromised composition; legal uses may have a wider, jurisdiction-specific scope. Keep an allegation separate from a finding. A lower price or unfamiliar appearance does not prove adulteration. For a classroom case, invent a clearly fictional example and state which evidence would be needed, rather than attach an accusation to a real local producer.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
53. food authenticity
Say it: FOOD aw-then-TIS-ih-tee
中文: 食品真实性 · shí pǐn zhēn shí xìng
Meaning: The extent to which a food is genuine in its identity, origin, nature and declared characteristics.
Example: Our food authenticity question asked whether the description matched the product, not whether we personally liked its taste.
中文例句: 我们的食品真实性问题,是询问说明是否与产品相符,而不是询问我们是否喜欢它的味道。
Use it well: Authenticity is a claim that needs a defined reference point. Explain whether you are checking origin, species, ingredients or another declared property. A traditional-looking package alone does not settle the matter. In writing, use evidence that addresses the exact claim. A product can be accurately described without being everyone’s favourite, because identity and preference answer different questions.
Word reference: UK Food Standards Agency
54. vulnerability assessment
Say it: vul-ner-uh-BIL-ih-tee uh-SES-muhnt
中文: 脆弱性评估 · cuì ruò xìng píng gū
Meaning: A systematic examination of weaknesses in a food system that could be exploited through deliberate interference.
Example: The fictional company’s vulnerability assessment considered where its food system needed stronger protection.
中文例句: 这家虚构公司的脆弱性评估,考虑了食品系统哪些地方需要加强保护。
Use it well: In this food-defence sense, the phrase concerns deliberate interference rather than ordinary variation in product quality. Keep the discussion at the level of responsibilities and protective planning. A report should distinguish identifying a possible weakness from proving that an incident occurred. Naming the assessment’s scope prevents a reader from mistaking it for a complete answer to every food-safety question.
Word reference: US Food and Drug Administration
55. food contact material
Say it: FOOD KON-takt muh-TEER-ee-uhl
中文: 食品接触材料 · shí pǐn jiē chù cái liào
Meaning: A material or article intended to come into contact with food, such as packaging or a food-handling surface.
Example: The lesson treated the wrapper as a food contact material and the snack as a separate object of study.
中文例句: 这节课把包装纸视为食品接触材料,并把零食作为另一个研究对象。
Use it well: The phrase describes the material’s intended relationship with food, not an automatic guarantee of suitability for every use. Identify the material and conditions named by the source. A container suitable for one purpose may need different information for another. In a reading exercise, keep claims about packaging separate from claims about the food enclosed by it.
Word reference: European Food Safety Authority
56. exposure assessment
Say it: ik-SPOH-zher uh-SES-muhnt
中文: 暴露评估 · bào lù píng gū
Meaning: An evaluation of who or what encounters a hazard and the amount, frequency or extent of that exposure.
Example: The exposure assessment asked how much of the substance people encountered, rather than stopping at its presence.
中文例句: 暴露评估询问人们接触了多少这种物质,而不只是确认它是否存在。
Use it well: Exposure is a relationship between a substance, an amount and a population or environment. Presence alone cannot answer the full question. In a summary, preserve the time period and units if the assessment gives them. Do not replace a population estimate with a claim about every individual. This is a component of a wider assessment, not a personal diagnosis.
Word reference: European Food Safety Authority
57. hazard characterisation
Say it: HAZ-erd kar-ik-ter-eye-ZAY-shun
中文: 危害特征描述 · wēi hài tè zhēng miáo shù
Meaning: The assessment stage that describes the nature and severity of harmful effects associated with a hazard, including dose relationships where possible.
Example: Hazard characterisation helped the class ask what harm could occur and under what conditions.
中文例句: 危害特征描述帮助全班询问:可能出现什么危害,又会在什么条件下出现。
Use it well: This stage goes beyond naming a hazard: it examines the effects and their relationship to dose where evidence permits. Do not confuse it with estimating what people actually consume. A careful paragraph keeps those questions separate before explaining how they connect. State uncertainties when the source does, rather than changing a conditional finding into a universal prediction.
Word reference: European Food Safety Authority
58. risk characterisation
Say it: RISK kar-ik-ter-eye-ZAY-shun
中文: 风险特征描述 · fēng xiǎn tè zhēng miáo shù
Meaning: The stage that combines information about a hazard and exposure to describe the likelihood and seriousness of possible harm.
Example: The final paragraph used risk characterisation to connect the hazard evidence with the exposure estimate.
中文例句: 最后一段通过风险特征描述,把危害证据与暴露估计联系起来。
Use it well: This is an integration step, not simply another name for a hazard. An accurate summary identifies which evidence is being combined and where important uncertainty remains. Avoid reporting a possible harmful effect as though everyone exposed will experience it. Equally, an incomplete dataset should not be described as proof that risk is absent. Match the strength of your sentence to the assessment.
Word reference: European Food Safety Authority
59. acceptable daily intake
Say it: ak-SEP-tuh-buhl DAY-lee IN-tayk
中文: 每日允许摄入量 · měi rì yǔn xǔ shè rù liàng
Meaning: An estimated daily amount of a substance that can be consumed over a lifetime without appreciable health risk, usually expressed relative to body weight.
Example: The article explained acceptable daily intake before using the abbreviation ADI in its next paragraph.
中文例句: 文章先解释每日允许摄入量,然后才在下一段使用缩写ADI。
Use it well: The phrase names an assessment benchmark, not a target that people should try to reach. Preserve both the substance and the unit whenever discussing a numerical value. The lifetime timescale is central to the meaning. A one-day observation and a long-term average answer different questions, so do not translate an isolated measurement into a personal medical conclusion.
Word reference: European Food Safety Authority
60. acute reference dose
Say it: uh-KYOOT REF-er-uhns DOHS
中文: 急性参考剂量 · jí xìng cān kǎo jì liàng
Meaning: An estimate of the amount of a substance that can be consumed within twenty-four hours or less without appreciable health risk.
Example: Our reading notes linked acute reference dose with a short exposure period and kept the body-weight unit visible.
中文例句: 我们的阅读笔记把急性参考剂量与短期暴露联系起来,并保留了按体重计算的单位。
Use it well: Acute refers to the short timescale, not to a substance automatically being extremely dangerous. The abbreviation ARfD is useful only after the full term has been introduced. Keep a reported value attached to its substance, units and assessment context. This benchmark should not be used as an invitation to experiment with a dose or as personalised dietary advice.
Word reference: European Food Safety Authority
Put the distinction to work
Read a public explanation and identify its substance, population, time period and units. If one of these is missing from your notes, return to the original passage. Write one sentence stating what you can conclude and one stating what remains unsettled. This structure is useful even when you cannot interpret every technical detail independently.
Acceptable daily intake concerns repeated daily consumption over a lifetime. Acute reference dose concerns a short period of twenty-four hours or less. Keep the timescales visible.

7. Read the book as an object
Entries 61–70. Back to contents
Imagine preparing a small display of three books for a class. You have space for only one label beside each. Decide which physical feature the visitor should notice first, and make that feature the subject of the first sentence. Then add a question that sends the visitor back to the object instead of replacing observation with a paragraph of praise.
A broadside presents text on a sheet, while a chapbook is a small book. These names help distinguish publication forms before discussing what the texts say.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
61. bibliophile
Say it: BIB-lee-oh-fyle
中文: 爱书人 · ài shū rén
Meaning: A person who loves books, often taking a particular interest in their physical form or collection.
Example: The bibliophile admired the paper and binding before beginning the poem on the first page.
中文例句: 这位爱书人在开始阅读第一页的诗歌之前,先欣赏了纸张和装帧。
Use it well: This noun describes an interest, not a professional qualification or a minimum collection size. A bibliophile may care about texts, editions and the appearance of books in different combinations. In a character sketch, show the interest through an action rather than merely applying the label. Comparing two copies can reveal what this particular reader notices and values.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
62. bibliomania
Say it: bib-lee-oh-MAY-nee-uh
中文: 藏书癖 · cáng shū pǐ
Meaning: An extreme preoccupation with collecting books, often described as excessive enthusiasm.
Example: The fictional collector joked that his search for another edition had become bibliomania.
中文例句: 这位虚构的收藏家开玩笑说,寻找另一个版本已经成了他的藏书癖。
Use it well: This is stronger than simply loving books, and it can carry a critical or humorous tone. Do not use it as a casual diagnosis of a real person. In literary discussion, explain the behaviour that makes the term appropriate to the character. The distinction concerns intensity and consequences, rather than assuming that every large collection is excessive.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
63. broadside
Say it: BRAWD-syde
中文: 单面大张印刷品 · dān miàn dà zhāng yìn shuā pǐn
Meaning: A large sheet printed on one side, often used for a notice, proclamation or poem.
Example: Our imaginary exhibition paired a broadside on the wall with a small bound book in the case.
中文例句: 我们设想的展览把墙上的单面大张印刷品与展柜里的一本小型装订书并列展示。
Use it well: In this chapter, broadside names a printed object, not a ship’s side or a verbal attack. State the sense when the audience might be unsure. The format allows a text to be encountered as one surface. When describing an example, distinguish the sheet’s physical arrangement from the authority or reliability of the message printed on it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
64. chapbook
Say it: CHAP-book
中文: 小册子 · xiǎo cè zi
Meaning: A small book containing material such as poems, ballads, stories or short tracts.
Example: The students planned a chapbook of short poems rather than a large reference volume.
中文例句: 学生们计划制作一本短诗小册子,而不是一大本参考书。
Use it well: A chapbook describes a kind of publication, not a judgement that the writing is unimportant. Use a chapbook of poems to identify both form and content. In a project proposal, explain why a compact format suits the material and reader. Do not assume that every short book shares the same history, production method or intended audience.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
65. cancel
Say it: KAN-suhl
中文: 替换书叶 · tì huàn shū yè
Meaning: In bibliography, a leaf or set of leaves inserted to replace material removed from a printed book.
Example: The catalogue described the altered leaf as a cancel, prompting us to compare it with another copy.
中文例句: 目录把那张改动过的书叶称为替换书叶,促使我们把它与另一本书比较。
Use it well: Here cancel is a countable noun with a specialised book-history meaning. It does not mean that the entire publication was called off. A replacement may change only part of a copy, so identify the affected leaf when the evidence permits. Avoid guessing the reason for replacement from the physical difference alone; explanation needs supporting bibliographical evidence.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
66. duodecimo
Say it: doo-oh-DES-ih-moh
中文: 十二开本 · shí èr kāi běn
Meaning: A book format in which a full printing sheet supplies twelve leaves, giving twenty-four page surfaces.
Example: The catalogue called the little volume a duodecimo, which told us more than the adjective small.
中文例句: 目录把这本小书称为十二开本,这比“小”这个形容词提供了更多信息。
Use it well: The format concerns the relationship between the original sheet and the leaves, not one fixed height in centimetres. Distinguish a leaf from a page: each leaf has two sides. A catalogue may abbreviate the term as 12mo. For a historical object, rely on a reliable description rather than infer format simply from how easily the book fits in a hand.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
67. octavo
Say it: ok-TAY-voh
中文: 八开本 · bā kāi běn
Meaning: A book format in which a printing sheet forms eight leaves, or sixteen page surfaces.
Example: Our paper model showed why an octavo could contain sixteen page surfaces from one sheet.
中文例句: 我们的纸模型显示,一张纸制成八开本时,为什么会有十六个页面。
Use it well: The abbreviation 8vo appears in book descriptions, but the number does not mean eight total pages in the completed book. Several sheets can be assembled into one volume. Use the term to discuss format, and use a separate measurement for the object’s actual size. Keeping construction and dimensions apart makes a catalogue description much easier to interpret.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
68. quarto
Say it: KWOR-toh
中文: 四开本 · sì kāi běn
Meaning: A book or paper format in which a full sheet yields four leaves, providing eight page surfaces.
Example: We labelled the four-leaf model quarto and counted its page surfaces separately.
中文例句: 我们把四张书叶的模型标为四开本,并另外计算它的页面数量。
Use it well: The abbreviation 4to refers to a format, not to the fourth edition. That distinction matters when copying a catalogue record. Original sheet sizes vary, so a quarto does not have one universal set of dimensions. In a classroom model, label the sheet, leaves and page surfaces before using the technical term; the visible relationships make the vocabulary easier to remember.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
69. uncut
Say it: un-KUT
中文: 未裁边的 · wèi cái biān de
Meaning: In specialist book description, having page edges that have not been trimmed down by the binder or later finishing.
Example: The bookseller described the copy as uncut and pointed to the generous, uneven margins.
中文例句: 书商把这本书描述为未裁边的,并指了指宽大而不齐的页边。
Use it well: This entry uses the specialist distinction between untrimmed edges and unopened folds. Check the catalogue’s conventions, because ordinary dictionaries sometimes use the terms differently. Uncut does not automatically mean unread, untouched or in perfect condition. A useful condition note describes what has actually been observed and avoids turning one physical feature into a whole history of ownership.
Word reference: Roger Gaskell / Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association
70. deckle edge
Say it: DEK-uhl EJ
中文: 毛边 · máo biān
Meaning: The irregular, feathered edge of a sheet of paper, produced during papermaking or imitated deliberately.
Example: The designer kept the deckle edge visible instead of cropping it out of the photograph.
中文例句: 设计者保留了可见的毛边,而没有在照片中把它裁掉。
Use it well: This term names the resulting paper edge, not the frame used in making a sheet. An irregular edge can be natural or deliberately imitated, so appearance alone does not prove age or handmade origin. In a description, say where the edge appears and how it looks. Keep the observation separate from an explanation of the production method.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Use ordinary scrap paper to build a labelled model. Keep “sheet”, “leaf” and “page surface” on separate labels, and explain your model to a partner without pointing at a finished diagram. Do not use a historical book for cutting or folding. The purpose is to test your explanation, not to imitate a conservation procedure.
Quarto, octavo and duodecimo distinguish formats by their relationship to a printing sheet. They do not prescribe one universal height for every book in the category.

8. Make the page easier to read
Entries 71–80. Back to contents
Study one page at its actual reading size before enlarging any detail. Mark where your eye pauses or loses its place. Write feedback in the order “location, observation, proposed change”. Then test the change on the entire page. This keeps a tiny design adjustment connected with the reader’s experience instead of treating decoration as an isolated achievement.
A widow strands a paragraph’s last line at the top of the next page; an orphan strands its first line at the foot of a page.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
71. fore-edge
Say it: FOR-ej
中文: 书口 · shū kǒu
Meaning: The edge of a book’s leaves opposite the spine.
Example: The conservator’s diagram marked the fore-edge so readers could orient the closed volume correctly.
中文例句: 修复人员的图表标出了书口,帮助读者正确辨认合拢书册的方向。
Use it well: Fore-edge identifies a position, not a decorative technique or a type of damage. It remains the edge opposite the spine when the book is turned on the table. Use this fixed relationship to avoid confusing left and right in photographs. If decoration or wear is present, describe it separately instead of making it part of the basic definition.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
72. doublure
Say it: doo-BLOOR
中文: 装饰性封里 · zhuāng shì xìng fēng lǐ
Meaning: An ornamental lining on the inside of a book cover, often made from a fine decorative material.
Example: A close-up of the doublure showed decoration inside the cover that the closed book had concealed.
中文例句: 装饰性封里的特写,展示了书合拢时看不到的封面内部装饰。
Use it well: The term directs attention to the inside surface of the cover. Do not confuse that lining with a loose page, the outside cover or a printed ownership label. In a catalogue description, name the material only when it has been identified. A photograph may show pattern and colour clearly while leaving the material uncertain, and your wording should preserve that limit.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
73. half-title
Say it: HAF-tyt-uhl
中文: 简书名页 · jiǎn shū míng yè
Meaning: A preliminary page carrying the book’s title alone before the fuller title page.
Example: The half-title gave us the name of the book, but we looked further for the fuller publication details.
中文例句: 简书名页告诉我们书名,但我们继续往后寻找更完整的出版信息。
Use it well: Half does not mean that half of the title has been accidentally omitted. The page has a particular position and purpose in the book. When recording a citation, do not stop at the first large words you see. Compare the preliminary page with the fuller title information and the catalogue record before deciding which details belong in your reference.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
74. widow
Say it: WID-oh
中文: 页首孤行 · yè shǒu gū háng
Meaning: In page layout, the last line of a paragraph stranded at the top of the following page or column.
Example: A widow interrupted the page’s rhythm, so the editor adjusted the layout and checked the whole spread again.
中文例句: 一行页首孤行打断了页面节奏,因此编辑调整了版面,并重新检查整个跨页。
Use it well: This is a specialised printing sense of a common word. State the layout context so the meaning is immediately clear. The problem concerns where a paragraph ends in relation to a page break. When editing, review the surrounding text after a change: moving one line may create another awkward break elsewhere rather than solve the entire layout.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
75. orphan
Say it: OR-fuhn
中文: 页末孤行 · yè mò gū háng
Meaning: In page layout, a paragraph’s first line left alone at the bottom of a page or column.
Example: The orphan at the foot of the page left its explanation waiting on the next page.
中文例句: 页末孤行把后面的解释留在了下一页。
Use it well: This guide follows the convention that an orphan is a stranded first line and a widow is a stranded last line. Some editing traditions use the labels differently, so agree on definitions before giving instructions. Describe the visible problem as well as naming it. That makes feedback useful even when another editor learned a different terminology.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
76. em dash
Say it: EM DASH
中文: 长破折号 · cháng pò zhé hào
Meaning: A long typographic dash, conventionally one em wide, used to mark a strong break in a sentence.
Example: The editor replaced the improvised pair of hyphens with an em dash in the display quotation.
中文例句: 编辑把展示引文中临时用的两个连字符换成了长破折号。
Use it well: An em dash is a distinct character, not simply any long-looking line. Follow the publication’s spacing convention consistently. Before adding one, decide what relationship the punctuation is meant to show: an interruption, an added explanation or a change of direction. A dramatic-looking mark cannot repair a sentence whose ideas have no clear connection.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
77. en dash
Say it: EN DASH
中文: 短破折号 · duǎn pò zhé hào
Meaning: A dash conventionally half as wide as an em dash, commonly used for ranges in edited English.
Example: Our style sheet used an en dash in the page range so the reference remained consistent.
中文例句: 我们的格式表在页码范围中使用短破折号,以保持引用格式一致。
Use it well: The term names the character rather than the spoken phrase to. A page range and a compound word may need different marks, so do not replace every hyphen automatically. Follow one house style, especially when indicating dates or page spans. In a proofreading task, check both the character and the relationship between the items it joins.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
78. swash
Say it: SWOSH
中文: 花饰笔画 · huā shì bǐ huà
Meaning: An extended decorative flourish attached to a letter in a type design.
Example: The swash gave the opening letter personality, but the designer checked that it did not collide with the next word.
中文例句: 花饰笔画让首字母更有个性,但设计者检查了它是否会碰到下一个词。
Use it well: This printing sense differs from the movement of water also called swash. Use swash letter or decorative swash when introducing the term to a new reader. Decoration changes the visual reach of a character, so evaluate it within the whole line. A flourish that works well in a large title may be distracting when repeated through a paragraph.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
79. ball terminal
Say it: BAWL TUR-mih-nuhl
中文: 球形笔端 · qiú xíng bǐ duān
Meaning: A rounded, ball-like ending at the end of a stroke in a letterform.
Example: We enlarged the letter to compare its ball terminal with the straight ending in another typeface.
中文例句: 我们放大字母,将其球形笔端与另一种字体的平直末端作比较。
Use it well: The terminal is part of the letter’s design, not a separate punctuation dot. Identify which stroke you mean before comparing shapes. Similar-looking rounded endings do not prove that two fonts are identical. In a visual analysis, move from the small feature to its effect on the whole word, explaining what you observe rather than relying on a style label alone.
Word reference: Monotype / Fonts.com
80. hairline
Say it: HAIR-lyne
中文: 极细笔画 · jí xì bǐ huà
Meaning: A very thin stroke in a printed letter, often connecting or contrasting with thicker strokes.
Example: At the smaller size, the hairline became difficult to see against the pale paper.
中文例句: 字号缩小后,极细笔画在浅色纸上变得难以看清。
Use it well: In this context, hairline is a typographic feature rather than a person’s hair boundary. A letter may combine strokes of different thicknesses, so identify the part you are discussing. A display that looks elegant at a large size should still be checked at its intended reading size. Describe the visibility problem before proposing a change to the design.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Create a short title and paragraph for an imaginary exhibition leaflet. Ask another reader to identify the title, the first sentence and the intended reading order without your help. If the reader hesitates, change one feature and try again. Record the reason for the change rather than claiming that your first choice was simply wrong.
A swash extends a letter decoratively, while a ball terminal rounds the end of a stroke. A hairline concerns thinness, so these are different observations about letterforms.

9. Listen for a musical relationship
Entries 81–90. Back to contents
Before writing about a performance, choose a short passage and a listening question. Listen once for the overall effect, then again for the feature that supports your description. Keep your interpretation separate from what a programme explicitly says. A convincing response can be modest: it needs a clear observation and an explanation, not a catalogue of technical terms.
A concertato can present several characters’ reactions simultaneously. Parlando describes speech-like delivery. One term names an ensemble situation; the other concerns the way music is delivered.
Reference: Metropolitan Opera · Merriam-Webster
81. canzona
Say it: kan-TSOH-nah
中文: 坎佐纳器乐曲 · kǎn zuǒ nà qì yuè qǔ
Meaning: In the historical sense used here, an instrumental form developed in sixteenth-century Italy from models associated with French chansons.
Example: The programme described the canzona as an instrumental work, so we listened for exchanges between the musical lines.
中文例句: 节目单把坎佐纳器乐曲描述为器乐作品,因此我们留意不同声部之间的呼应。
Use it well: The name has had several vocal and instrumental uses, so specify the period and sense rather than translating every occurrence simply as song. This entry concerns the historical instrumental form. When listening, distinguish what the programme tells you about a category from the features you actually hear. A form’s history does not establish the structure of every individual piece.
Word reference: Cambridge University Press
82. concertato
Say it: kon-cher-TAH-toh
中文: 歌剧重唱场面 · gē jù chóng chàng chǎng miàn
Meaning: An operatic ensemble passage in which several characters sing simultaneously, often expressing different reactions to the same situation.
Example: The concertato let us hear several responses to the surprise before any character resolved the conflict.
中文例句: 歌剧重唱场面让我们在人物解决冲突之前,听到他们对意外事件的不同反应。
Use it well: The word names a musical-dramatic passage, not the person directing a rehearsal. Simultaneous singing can present contrasting thoughts that ordinary conversation would deliver one after another. In a response paragraph, identify whose reaction you are following. Do not describe the characters as agreeing merely because their voices sound together; shared musical time can contain disagreement.
Word reference: Metropolitan Opera
83. parlando
Say it: par-LAN-doh
中文: 近似说话地 · jìn sì shuō huà de
Meaning: A musical direction calling for delivery that resembles speech.
Example: The singer’s parlando delivery made the rapid words sound like an urgent conversation.
中文例句: 歌者近似说话的演唱,让快速的歌词听起来像一场急切的对话。
Use it well: Parlando describes a manner of delivery rather than a requirement to abandon all musical organisation. Use a parlando passage or sing parlando in an appropriate musical context. In a review, explain which audible feature suggests speech, such as the treatment of the words. Avoid assuming that every passage with many syllables is intended to be performed in this manner.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
84. rubato
Say it: roo-BAH-toh
中文: 弹性速度 · tán xìng sù dù
Meaning: Expressive flexibility in timing within a musical phrase, often heard against a steadier underlying accompaniment.
Example: The pianist’s rubato gave the phrase room to breathe without making its direction disappear.
中文例句: 钢琴家的弹性速度让乐句有了呼吸空间,同时仍保持清晰的走向。
Use it well: Rubato is not a synonym for random timing or for simply playing slowly. Listen for how time is stretched and recovered within the phrase. In a comparison of performances, describe where the flexibility occurs and what it contributes. A judgement such as too much rubato needs a musical reason rather than a preference presented as an unquestionable rule.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
85. tenuto
Say it: teh-NOO-toh
中文: 保持足时值地 · bǎo chí zú shí zhí de
Meaning: A direction to hold a note or chord firmly for its full written value.
Example: The teacher asked for tenuto on the marked notes so their endings would not be clipped.
中文例句: 老师要求标记的音符保持足时值,避免过早收音。
Use it well: The instruction focuses attention on the note’s duration and weight within its context. It does not automatically mean making the entire passage louder or slower. When explaining a correction, identify the marked note and compare its ending with the next event. Listening to the release can reveal a difference that a general comment about expression would miss.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
86. sforzando
Say it: sfort-SAN-doh
中文: 突强地 · tū qiáng de
Meaning: A direction to give a note or chord a pronounced accent or stress.
Example: The sforzando chord startled the listener because it stood out from the quieter phrase around it.
中文例句: 突强和弦从周围较轻的乐句中突出出来,因此令听众感到意外。
Use it well: An accent is local emphasis, so distinguish it from an instruction governing the sustained loudness of an entire section. In score reading, connect the marking to the note or chord it affects. In descriptive writing, explain the relationship with the surrounding sound. A prominent attack can alter the character of a moment without changing every later note.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
87. da capo
Say it: dah KAH-poh
中文: 从头反复 · cóng tóu fǎn fù
Meaning: A musical instruction to return to the beginning and repeat.
Example: At da capo, the players returned to the opening instead of continuing beyond the final bar.
中文例句: 看到从头反复的指示时,演奏者回到开头,而不是继续到最后一小节之后。
Use it well: The direction specifies where to return; further score instructions determine how the repeated route finishes. Read the complete marking rather than react to the first two words alone. For a paper exercise, draw an arrow to the actual starting point. This turns an abstract translation into a navigable sequence and prevents a repeat from becoming an endless loop.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
88. dal segno
Say it: dal SEN-yoh
中文: 从记号处反复 · cóng jì hào chù fǎn fù
Meaning: A musical instruction to return to the sign marking the start of a repeated passage.
Example: The class located the sign before following dal segno through the practice score.
中文例句: 全班先找到记号,再按照从记号处反复的指示阅读练习谱。
Use it well: Unlike a return to the very beginning, this instruction sends the reader to a marked location. Find that sign before performing the route, and check any further ending instruction. When teaching it, keep the sign visible on the page instead of offering a verbal definition alone. The practical difference is the destination of the return.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
89. obbligato
Say it: ob-blee-GAH-toh
中文: 不可省略的声部 · bù kě shěng lüè de shēng bù
Meaning: A required musical part; the term can also identify a prominent accompanying line for a solo instrument.
Example: The flute obbligato remained essential even when the singer carried the principal melody.
中文例句: 即使歌者承担主要旋律,长笛不可省略的声部仍然十分重要。
Use it well: This entry uses the idea of an essential, specifically written part, not just any background accompaniment. Identify the instrument when describing the line. In a listening response, explain how it interacts with the principal melody rather than treating accompaniment as musically unimportant. The historical meaning can depend on context, so read the programme’s use before applying the label widely.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
90. con fuoco
Say it: kon FWOH-koh
中文: 热烈地 · rè liè de
Meaning: A musical direction calling for a fiery, impetuous character.
Example: The ensemble played con fuoco while keeping the rhythm clear enough for the phrases to remain intelligible.
中文例句: 合奏团热烈地演奏,同时保持清晰的节奏,让乐句仍然容易理解。
Use it well: The phrase describes character, not a precise metronome number. Energy can come from articulation, momentum and emphasis rather than uncontrolled volume. When comparing two readings, say what makes one sound more fiery. In written feedback, couple the expressive instruction with an observable musical feature so the performer can understand what you want to hear.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Write a listening response in three moves: identify the moment, describe a change and explain the effect you heard. If you have no score, avoid claiming that a particular marking appears in it. Instead, describe the audible result and use the vocabulary as a comparison. A partner should be able to locate the moment from your description.
Rubato concerns flexible timing within a phrase. Sforzando concerns a pronounced accent. Distinguishing timing from local emphasis gives your account a clearer musical focus.

10. Follow an instruction through time
Entries 91–100. Back to contents
Treat a musical direction as an instruction with a scope. Ask where it starts, what it changes and when another instruction takes over. A printed word may be short while its effect extends across a phrase or section. For a reading exercise, draw the route or allocation on a practice copy and explain it in ordinary English before using the Italian term.
Divisi divides a group between written parts. Ossia introduces an alternative passage. These instructions organise the musical material in different ways, rather than simply describing its mood.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
91. dolcissimo
Say it: dol-CHEES-see-moh
中文: 极柔美地 · jí róu měi de
Meaning: A musical direction asking for an especially sweet, soft or gentle expression.
Example: The dolcissimo phrase sounded intimate even though the melody remained clearly audible.
中文例句: 极柔美的乐句听起来亲切细腻,但旋律仍清晰可闻。
Use it well: The superlative ending intensifies the expressive quality. It does not mean that every listener must experience the same emotion, or that the music should become inaudible. When discussing a performance, connect the instruction with tone and phrasing. A useful comparison explains how gentleness was created, rather than replacing musical description with a list of pleasant adjectives.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
92. maestoso
Say it: mah-eh-STOH-soh
中文: 庄严地 · zhuāng yán de
Meaning: A musical direction calling for a majestic, dignified or stately character.
Example: The opening became maestoso through its measured weight rather than through sheer loudness.
中文例句: 开头通过有分寸的分量感显得庄严,而不是单靠响亮的音量。
Use it well: Maestoso concerns bearing and character; it does not supply one universal speed. A measured phrase can feel stately without becoming heavy or motionless. In a performance comparison, explain the timing, emphasis or shape that creates the effect. Distinguish the printed instruction from your own impression when a recording sounds majestic but no such marking has been verified.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
93. allargando
Say it: al-lar-GAN-doh
中文: 渐宽广地 · jiàn kuān guǎng de
Meaning: A direction to broaden the music, becoming gradually slower and more stately.
Example: The allargando near the end expanded the phrase instead of letting it hurry to the final chord.
中文例句: 结尾附近渐宽广的处理扩展了乐句,而没有让它匆忙冲向最后的和弦。
Use it well: The term combines a developing change with a sense of breadth, so it is more informative than the isolated adjective slow. Listen across the passage rather than judge one note. In an explanation, say where the broadening begins and how it changes the arrival. Do not convert a relative expressive direction into an invented numerical tempo.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
94. stringendo
Say it: strin-JEN-doh
中文: 渐紧迫加速地 · jiàn jǐn pò jiā sù de
Meaning: A musical direction to press forward with a quickening tempo, often towards a climax.
Example: The stringendo increased the urgency as the ensemble approached the turning point.
中文例句: 合奏接近转折点时,渐紧迫加速的处理增强了急切感。
Use it well: The direction describes a developing movement through time, not a fixed fast speed from the outset. In a listening account, identify the change and its dramatic destination. A performance can press forward while remaining coordinated. Avoid calling every energetic passage stringendo unless you have heard an actual quickening or verified the instruction in the score.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
95. divisi
Say it: dee-VEE-zee
中文: 分部演奏 · fēn bù yǎn zòu
Meaning: A direction for players reading the same orchestral staff to divide between two or more parts.
Example: The divisi marking assigned different notes to different players within the string section.
中文例句: 分部演奏的标记,把不同音符分配给弦乐组内的不同演奏者。
Use it well: The section is divided musically rather than physically moved to another room. Distinguish the number of written parts from the number of people playing them. In a rehearsal explanation, make the allocation clear before playing. The term does not mean that each musician must somehow perform every simultaneous note shown on the shared staff.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
96. ossia
Say it: os-SEE-ah
中文: 替代乐句 · tì dài yuè jù
Meaning: A label in a score introducing an alternative version of a passage, often a simpler one.
Example: The pianist compared the ossia with the main passage before choosing a consistent version for practice.
中文例句: 钢琴家把替代乐句与主要版本比较后,才选定一个一致的练习版本。
Use it well: An ossia offers an alternative rather than an extra passage that must be played at the same time. Do not assume that every alternative is easier; the score determines the relationship. In a practice plan, record which option you are using and why. That avoids an accidental mixture of versions when another player or teacher follows a different line.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
97. dolente
Say it: doh-LEN-teh
中文: 悲伤地 · bēi shāng de
Meaning: A musical direction calling for a sorrowful manner of expression.
Example: The singer shaped the dolente phrase with restraint, allowing the words to carry their grief.
中文例句: 歌者克制地塑造悲伤的乐句,让歌词传达哀愁。
Use it well: The word names an intended expressive character, not a report about the performer’s private feelings. In a review, discuss the musical effect rather than claiming to know the artist’s emotional state. Identify the phrasing or tone that suggests sorrow to you. A restrained performance can communicate grief without every note being exaggerated.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
98. non troppo
Say it: non TROP-poh
中文: 不过分地 · bù guò fèn de
Meaning: A qualifying musical direction meaning that another instruction should not be taken to excess.
Example: The words non troppo qualified the tempo instruction, so the players avoided pushing it to an extreme.
中文例句: “不过分地”限定了速度指示,因此演奏者避免把速度推向极端。
Use it well: Read the phrase with the direction it modifies. By itself, it does not tell you which quality should be moderated. This is a useful example of how small words control meaning: leaving them out can change an interpretation. In programme reading, copy the complete marking rather than select only the most familiar word and lose the qualification.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
99. tacet
Say it: TAY-set
中文: 整段休止 · zhěng duàn xiū zhǐ
Meaning: An instruction for an instrument to remain silent through a movement or a substantial section.
Example: The trumpet part said tacet, so the player followed the score without joining that movement.
中文例句: 小号声部标着整段休止,因此演奏者跟着乐谱,却没有加入该乐章。
Use it well: Silence is part of the arrangement, not evidence that the player has forgotten the music. The marking governs the specified span; it does not necessarily mean the instrument is absent from the whole work. In a listening exercise, notice what remains when one part is silent. Describing absence can be as precise as describing an audible entrance.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
100. attacca
Say it: ah-TAK-kah
中文: 不停顿接奏 · bù tíng dùn jiē zòu
Meaning: An instruction to begin the next movement or section immediately, without a pause.
Example: The attacca carried the audience directly into the next movement before the previous atmosphere had settled.
中文例句: 不停顿接奏把观众直接带入下一个乐章,前一个乐章的氛围还没有完全消散。
Use it well: The instruction concerns the transition between sections. It does not mean that the next music must be aggressive simply because the word resembles attack. When preparing to listen, note how continuity changes your sense of the work. In a written response, explain the effect of the unbroken connection rather than merely announcing that the music continued.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Compare two instructions by asking what a performer would actually do differently. Write one sentence for the action and one for the effect a listener might notice. Keep the second sentence conditional when you have not heard a performance. This protects a plausible interpretation from becoming an invented report about a concert.
Tacet calls for silence during the specified span; attacca removes the pause before the next section. Both help organise time, but their actions are quite different.

Use the words in connected English
These original model scenes demonstrate sentence choices and careful explanation. They are not reports of actual visits, meals or performances.
Model 1: a careful cultural plan
We began our Parma project with one question: how can a place make an unfamiliar subject easier to notice? Instead of planning a race between buildings, we chose one object to describe and one question to carry into the next chapter.
At the Bodoni Museum, our proposed focus was the making of a printed page. We would compare a hairline with a ball terminal in a classroom reproduction afterwards, without assuming that a particular specimen would be on display.
Reference: Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta · Merriam-Webster · Monotype / Fonts.com
Why this works: the paragraph gives the project a purpose, limits its scope and makes the later exercise visibly conditional. It does not pretend that a planned visit has already happened. Try replacing the subject while keeping those three strengths. The final version should tell a reader what you hope to learn and how you will recognise useful evidence.
Model 2: a menu-reading exchange
“I can recognise the name tortelli d’erbetta, but I still want to ask which greens are in this version,” I said. “And I’ll ask what broth accompanies the anolini,” my brother replied. We wrote our questions before choosing.
Reference: Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome · Comune di Parma / Parma Welcome
Why this works: both speakers use a named food in a natural exchange, while their questions leave room for information they do not yet have. Translate the exchange into Chinese without turning the questions into claims. Then change the speakers and setting. Keep the practical purpose of each question clear even when you use different wording.
Model 3: a precise science summary
Our chart treated casein as protein and lactose as sugar. It used proteolysis for protein breakdown and lipolysis for fat breakdown. The different labels prevented one general word, change, from hiding the question each arrow was meant to answer.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
Why this works: each term has a defined role in the explanation. The paragraph gives no invented quantities and makes no claim about a particular commercial product. To practise, write a second version for a younger reader. Explain the relationship in ordinary words first, then introduce the technical label where it genuinely makes the account more precise.
Model 4: a listening response
The rubato made the phrase feel flexible, while the sforzando drew attention to one sharp moment. Later, an attacca transition carried the music onwards without a pause. In my response, I separated changes within a phrase from the connection between sections.
Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster
Why this works: the invented response distinguishes different kinds of musical event and explains their effect. Use a real recording only after listening carefully, and name it when you report actual observations. If you cannot establish the printed directions, revise the passage as a description of what you heard rather than a claim about the score.
Retrieval practice: make the distinction yourself
Close the entries and answer these prompts in complete sentences: identify a city location at two different scales; separate a patron from a maker; distinguish a product name from an ingredient question; explain a material before naming its process; and identify the exact point where an uncertain claim becomes too strong.
Now choose five words from one chapter. For each, give the meaning without using the headword, create a fresh example and explain one likely confusion. Reopen the guide only after your first attempt. Mark a correct meaning, a partly correct meaning or a meaning that needs rebuilding. This is a small check of retrieval, not a score for how intelligent you are.
For a second round, exchange examples with a partner. The partner should underline the words that make the meaning clear. If nothing in the sentence distinguishes the headword from a vague substitute, revise it. A sentence such as “It was interesting” adds little. An example should show why this particular word belongs in this particular situation.
A five-session reading plan
Session one: choose a route and learn ten entries connected with one question. Session two: retrieve their meanings without looking, then study another ten. Session three: compare two easily confused terms and write a short bilingual exchange. Session four: develop one model paragraph using your own observations or a clearly labelled imagined scene. Session five: revise the paragraph after checking every factual claim and every translation.
A parent or teacher can ask three calm questions: “What does this word let you say?”, “Which part of your example shows its meaning?” and “What would you need to check before claiming that?” Give the learner time to reformulate. The aim is a clearer explanation, rather than a faster performance of a memorised definition.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a list of Italian phrases for ordering and directions?
It is an English vocabulary guide built around Parma. Named Italian places and foods appear alongside English scientific, bibliographical and musical terms. Use the route cards to choose a practical or specialist path. For an actual conversation, prefer a short clear question that you understand over a technical term you cannot yet explain.
Do I need to know every scientific term before visiting?
No. Begin with the place and food chapters if those meet your immediate needs. The specialist chapters are optional routes into deeper reading and school writing. Choose words because they help answer a question you care about. Return to the same small group in new sentences before adding a much larger set.
Can the Camera di San Paolo be included in a confirmed visit now?
The municipal notice checked on 4 October 2026 announces closure from 31 August for works expected to continue approximately until spring 2027. Keep it as a study subject, and recheck the official notice before treating entry as available. An approximate completion window is not a confirmed reopening appointment.

How should I use the Chinese and pinyin?
Read the English meaning first, use the Chinese to check understanding, then return to the English example. Pinyin supports reading the Chinese label; it is not the pronunciation of the English headword. Local names may have alternative Chinese renderings, so keep the original name available for matching a map, menu or catalogue.
Can these examples be copied into a report as facts?
The examples and model scenes are invented for learning. Use them to study sentence structure, then replace the situation with something you can honestly support. Identify a real source when stating a historical or scientific fact. If you are describing a planned visit or imagined exchange, make that status visible in the writing.
How do I know a word is ready to use?
Try three tasks without looking: explain its selected meaning, place it in a fresh sentence and distinguish it from a nearby idea. If one task fails, return to the note and rebuild the example. Recognition is a beginning; a useful word should help you communicate something more precisely than before.
Sources and vocabulary references
Research checked 4 October 2026. Official city, regional, museum and venue pages support the Parma context. Dictionaries, scientific agencies, food-production bodies, a specialist bookselling guide, typography references and music-education publications support the selected senses. Restaurant and recipe sources identify the particular preparations discussed. The teaching wording, examples and translations are newly written; the linked sources support their factual and lexical basis.
