Did you know? Bulgaria’s preschool standard includes music, art, movement and the surrounding world alongside language and mathematics. Its central teaching form is mainly organised through play. That gives parents a useful question: how does this setting bring those experiences to life?

Should we shortlist this setting?
Look for a day your child could comfortably join. Can children handle materials, move, listen, make something and talk with a responsive adult? Ask how a newcomer enters a game and how a child who needs extra help remains involved. These ordinary moments make a programme understandable.
eduKateSG shortlist guidance: request the group’s programme and one example of an activity adapted for different children. A broad curriculum is encouraging, but the fit depends on the adults, language support and actual routine. Also confirm whether the proposed organisation of attendance suits your family’s working day.
Which age group and entry arrangements apply?
The official regional authority’s published text of Ordinance No. 5 sets ordinary preschool entry in the school year beginning in the year a child turns three, with conditional provision for two-year-olds. It specifies compulsory preschool from the school year beginning in the year the child turns four. Preschool continues to first-grade entry, with age groups including six-to-seven-year-olds. Municipal admission rules and private-provider contracts govern their respective enrolment procedures.
The linked consolidated text records amendments through May 2024. Check current municipal and provider instructions before acting on an application, including any subsequent changes. This guide concerns the preschool framework, not a complete account of care from birth. A two-year-old place should be confirmed individually; it is not a promise that every kindergarten accepts every younger child.
What are the seven learning areas?
The same standard names Bulgarian language and literature, mathematics, surrounding world, visual arts, music, construction and technologies, and physical culture. It provides for an age-appropriate learning environment through play. These descriptions concern the national framework, rather than proof of a particular classroom’s implementation.
eduKateSG interpretation: a visit should show what a child actually does with those opportunities. A pretend journey could involve directions, movement, drawing and discussion. Ask which part the child chooses, which part an adult supports and what the teacher observes. Seven areas need not become seven separate family worksheets; the useful question is whether an experience invites meaningful participation.
A family application: make a sound-and-movement path
Suggested family experience: place two or three large paper shapes on the floor where the child can move safely. Agree on a sound or clap for each stop. Your child can choose an order, move between the shapes and invite you to copy. Then swap roles. There is room for listening, expression, spatial language and shared rules in one cheerful game.
The mechanism is making a signal meaningful through action and response. If the child loses the sequence, use two stops and one sound. If movement is difficult, move a large toy between drawn shapes on a table. If a loud sound is uncomfortable, use a quiet gesture. Explain the adjustment as a way to join the game, not as a failure.
Watch for a specific change: noticing the signal, choosing a route, waiting for a partner or explaining a new rule. Another day, let the child use the same stop-and-go idea during a pretend bus ride. That is a possible transfer of the rule to a new context. Stay with the version your child enjoys; this is an optional family activity, not a national assessment or a task for babies.
Practical questions before enrolment
- Which age group applies, and where are the current admission instructions?
- What attendance organisation does this place offer, and what are the real arrival and collection times?
- How does the group’s programme use the seven areas through play?
- How will you support a child new to Bulgarian while respecting the family’s home language?
- What are the full costs, meal arrangements, closures and requirements for attendance?
- Who plans adaptations with parents, and how will we hear about participation and progress?
A longer day may solve a childcare problem while creating a need for quieter transitions, rest and predictable collection. Ask the provider to explain the whole day rather than showing only a teaching session. Compare the journey at the times you would actually travel.
Shortlist note: “Age route checked; play examples convincing; current attendance rules, language support and total cost awaiting confirmation.” A place moves forward when those answers fit the child and the family.
Parent questions, answered
Is preschool only for ages three to six?
The published Bulgarian framework includes a six-to-seven age group before first-grade entry. Check your child’s actual placement.
Does compulsory preschool mean any centre will have a place?
Eligibility and a confirmed place are different questions. Ask the municipality or provider about the current process.
Must we reproduce all seven areas at home?
No. The family game above is an optional application, not a requirement to teach the entire curriculum.
What is the best evidence during a visit?
An ordinary interaction showing how the educator helps your child understand, participate and try again.
