Preschool Education in North Macedonia: Play, Feelings and Kindergarten Fit

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Did you know? A December 2025 initiative in North Macedonia includes support for a new early-childhood curriculum and revised learning standards centred on play. For parents, it opens a useful conversation: what does playful learning actually look like in the group being offered today?

Which kindergarten should we shortlist?

Ask about the proposed group, a normal day and the team responsible for it. How do children choose materials, communicate an idea and return to an activity after a difficulty? Ask what an adult does when a child watches before joining.

eduKateSG shortlist guidance: consider a setting when the programme and daily support match your child, and the practical arrangements work for the family. Confirm a real place and start date rather than assuming that a national expansion initiative means immediate availability.

Also ask how parents and educators exchange useful observations. A comfort cue or familiar way of requesting help should lead to a practical settling plan, not remain background information on a form.

Which ages and programme details need checking?

UNICEF’s June 2026 policy-brief overview discusses expansion of early-childhood education and care and an enrolment target for children aged three to six. That is the brief’s policy age group and proposed direction, not a complete intake rule for every kindergarten or confirmation that a target has been reached.

Ask the provider for accepted birth dates, the actual programme and current availability. For babies and toddlers, request appropriate care information separately. For children approaching school, confirm the primary-school route and who coordinates the transition.

The December 2025 play initiative describes support for curriculum development and revision of standards. It does not establish completed implementation in every group. Ask which current guidance the team uses and what changes staff can show in practice.

Families moving from Singapore should compare the actual group and experience rather than assign an automatic nursery, K1 or K2 equivalent.

How do feelings connect with learning?

UNICEF’s social-and-emotional preschool resource presents examples involving play, storytelling, relationships and family engagement. It includes material from before pandemic restrictions, so it supplies documented practice context rather than a current assessment of any kindergarten.

eduKateSG interpretation: ask how an adult helps a child who is disappointed when a plan fails. Do they acknowledge the feeling, make the next step manageable and help the child return when ready? That conversation connects emotional support with the learning experience.

Observe possibilities, not a demand that every child immediately appear calm or sociable. A useful account names the difficulty, the adult’s support and a small next response. Ask how the team shares those observations with parents.

A family application: help a toy change its plan

Suggested family experience: use a large toy and a simple pretend situation. Perhaps it wanted one book, but another toy is using it. Ask what the first toy might feel and what it could try while waiting. Accept a gesture, a short phrase or a demonstrated idea.

The mechanism is linking a feeling with a manageable next action. If the situation is too complicated, name one feeling and offer two choices. If speech is difficult, use a suitable picture. Keep the exchange playful; a child does not need to disclose a private worry or produce the adult’s preferred answer.

Notice identifying a feeling, choosing a next step, proposing another idea or changing the story. Later, recall the idea during a familiar low-pressure waiting moment, while still providing adult support. That offers a chance to use it elsewhere.

Babies need responsive comfort from trusted adults; pretend problem-solving is not an infant expectation. This optional eduKateSG activity is not an official curriculum task, therapy exercise or readiness test.

Questions about the actual place and day

  • Which ages, available places and start dates apply?
  • What current programme or standards guide this group?
  • What teacher preparation supports playful and responsive practice?
  • Which languages and adaptations help the child communicate?
  • What are the hours, meals, rest, closures and total costs?
  • How do parents discuss progress, support needs and school transition?

A suitable programme can still leave a care gap outside its session. A longer day needs a clear account of rest, transitions and collection. Compare current provision rather than an announced future model.

Shortlist note: “Group and play approach identified; emotional support explained; current vacancy, age placement, language plan and care arrangements still to confirm.”

Parent questions, answered

Does a target for ages three to six confirm eligibility?

No. Check the actual provider’s current rules and offer.

Is every group already using the new curriculum?

The cited announcement describes development support. Ask what is implemented locally.

Must feelings activities become a test?

Our optional example is a shared game, with different ways to respond.

What is a useful first request?

Ask for a normal routine and how staff would support your child after an activity becomes difficult.
