Your family’s guide to tertiary education in Italy

Start with the question that matters to your family, or explore the complete guide below.

Full contents · Worldwide parent-guide directory

Did You Know? Italy’s higher education landscape includes university degrees, specialist higher arts education and applied technological routes. The word diploma in a translated course name does not by itself tell a parent the award’s level or purpose.

For families exploring tertiary education in Italy after Grade 12, A Levels, JC2, IB or diploma study, start with the exact final qualification. Then connect it to the learner’s subjects, language preparation and preferred kind of work. This guide makes the main routes visible without turning a school-stage comparison into an admission promise.

Who this guide is for: Parents of learners aged 16 through adulthood. Grade 12, Year 12, A Levels, Singapore JC2, IB and diploma terms identify stages of planning, not automatic qualification or admission equivalence. Check the actual certificate, subjects, results and intended intake. Official requirements are linked; family planning suggestions are eduKate’s guidance.

Before you shortlist a programme in Italy

  • Learning fit: Compare a university subject, specialist arts learning and a relevant technological route.
  • Entry route: Ask the receiving institution to assess the exact foreign qualification.
  • Learning access: Check teaching language and the language of compulsory practical activity.
  • Everyday journey: Find the actual campus and plan housing, travel and administrative support.
  • Plausible alternative: Compare a different route by its award and curriculum, not only its course name.
  • Next action: Save the programme’s current admissions notice and ask one qualification or selection question.

Section 1 of 12 · Understand Italian awards

1. Read the university cycle correctly

Back to contents

The Italian Ministry’s degree guide distinguishes the first-cycle Laurea from the second-cycle Laurea Magistrale. A Laurea is normally a three-year undergraduate degree. A Laurea Magistrale normally follows first-cycle study rather than school completion.

Keep the Italian award name beside any English translation. It reduces confusion when comparing courses or asking about later study. Invite the learner to explain what the first year contains and what subject knowledge it develops. A familiar English label is helpful only when it accurately describes the programme being considered.

2. Understand credits and integrated degrees

Back to contents

Universitaly’s system guide explains that a first-cycle Laurea requires 180 CFU and that one CFU corresponds to one ECTS credit. It also describes integrated single-cycle Laurea Magistrale programmes lasting five or six years.

Credits describe study workload and structure; they are not a family-made grade conversion or an automatic transfer decision. For an integrated programme, read its specific discipline, admission arrangements and complete study commitment. Do not apply a three-year degree budget or progression diagram to a course that combines two cycles.

Section 3 of 12 · Check qualifications and selection

3. Let the institution assess the foreign qualification

Back to contents

Universitaly’s current international-student procedures state that higher education institutions assess foreign qualifications for enrolment. Grade 12, A Levels, JC2 and IB identify a planning stage in this article; the exact certificate and its supporting history matter.

Ask the selected institution what evidence it requires: final qualification, transcript, subject results, translations and any additional documentation. Do not purchase every possible recognition document simply because another applicant used it. Follow the course’s current instructions and obtain clarification where the learner’s educational history does not fit neatly into a listed category.

Section 4 of 12 · Check qualifications and selection

4. Read the programme’s selection notice

Back to contents

General qualification suitability and programme selection are different questions. Read the intended intake’s admissions notice for tests, ranking, portfolios, interviews or other requirements. A course listing alone cannot settle these conditions.

For fields with changing admission arrangements, use the current ministry and university instructions rather than an older test-preparation article. This guide does not prescribe one examination for all Italian degrees. Put the selected programme’s deadlines and required actions into a short calendar, and let the learner check the first task against the official notice.

Section 5 of 12 · Explore arts and applied routes

5. Treat AFAM as specialist higher education

Back to contents

Universitaly includes Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e coreutica—AFAM—in the higher education system, with first- and second-level academic diplomas. Check the institution’s authorized status and the exact award rather than judging it from the translated word diploma.

Ask about the actual audition, portfolio or entrance brief. A parent can help the learner discuss how a piece of work developed: idea, technique, feedback and revision. Then compare that preparation with the course’s expectations. Serious creative learning combines sustained practice with understanding; it deserves more than a shortlist built from attractive buildings or course photographs.

6. Explore ITS Academy without inventing a degree bridge

Back to contents

Italy’s ITS Academy routes provide applied technological tertiary education. Government descriptions distinguish two- and three-year pathways. Read the specific qualification and curriculum, and ask the provider how foreign applicants are assessed.

An applied route should be evaluated for its own learning and purpose. If a later university degree matters, obtain the receiving institution’s actual credit and admission decision. Our applied higher education guide helps compare practical learning across systems without assuming that every technological diploma becomes a guaranteed shortened bachelor’s degree.

Section 7 of 12 · Plan language and enrolment

7. Check language throughout the programme

Back to contents

Ask the course about teaching language, accepted evidence and examinations. An English-taught programme should also be checked for the language used in any compulsory placement or other practical activity. Do not infer programme access from a university offering some courses in English.

Plan daily Italian communication separately. The learner may need to manage housing, appointments or routine questions beyond the classroom. Identify the institution’s international support and language opportunities. Clear preparation supports confidence without pretending that passing an admission language requirement automatically makes every part of everyday life effortless.

8. Separate admission, pre-enrolment and visa decisions

Back to contents

For applicants who need a study visa, the current Universitaly procedures require visa-related pre-enrolment through the official portal. They also make clear that institutional validation does not guarantee visa issuance. Follow the instructions applicable to the learner’s status and intended intake.

The official first-steps guide helps identify the sequence. Keep academic, pre-enrolment and relevant immigration actions distinct in the family calendar. Confirm current requirements with the institution and competent authorities. This article is an educational orientation guide, not an individualized immigration assessment.

9. Budget for a real location and study pattern

Back to contents

Use the selected institution’s current fee rules and ask how the learner’s category and required documents affect the amount. Add housing, materials, transport, food, travel and moving costs across the whole course. Keep confirmed funding separate from scholarships still being considered.

Find the actual teaching site and ask how the study and examination calendar works. Compare housing with a realistic commute, not only a city’s appeal. Our living and commuting guide helps turn an overseas ambition into an everyday plan the learner can explain and sustain.

Section 10 of 12 · Review adult study and FAQs

10. Give adult learners a precise award and timetable

Back to contents

An adult considering Italian higher education should identify the final award, entry qualification, attendance pattern and assessment requirements. A short course or an English course nickname does not establish that it is the same as a Laurea or Laurea Magistrale.

Ask whether previous learning can be recognized and what remains to complete. Use the credit-transfer guide to prepare module evidence, and the adult-study guide to compare study with employment and caring responsibilities. Obtain programme-specific answers before assuming flexibility, exemptions or access to a later qualification.

Section 11 of 12 · Review adult study and FAQs

11. Questions parents commonly ask

Back to contents

Is every Italian undergraduate route three years? No. Integrated single-cycle and other tertiary routes have different structures.

Is an AFAM diploma automatically a school-level certificate? No. Check its academic level and authorized awarding institution.

Does validated pre-enrolment guarantee a study visa? No. Those are separate decisions under the current official procedures.

Section 12 of 12 · Review adult study and FAQs

12. Connect the award to the learner’s purpose

Back to contents

Compare two real options by final qualification, first-year learning, entry conditions, language and daily arrangements. Let the learner describe why the programme matters to them. If an arts or applied route is shortlisted, evaluate its actual purpose rather than using it only as a substitute for university study.

One clear next step could be checking qualification documents or understanding an audition brief. Return to the worldwide hub to compare another country. Italy’s route names become much easier to use when each one is connected to a real course, a confirmed requirement and a learner’s developing interests.
