Primary 6 Mathematics Tuition | Sembawang Weekday or Weekend Parent Dilemma

Three secondary students review open books and notes together in a classroom.
Three learners review open books together at a classroom table.

Primary 6 Mathematics tuition for Sembawang parents should help a child connect a diagram with a valid calculation. A weekday may suit prompt clarification of current schoolwork. A weekend may offer a rested session for comparing diagrams and trying a method independently.

The first weak step may be more specific than the score suggests. A pupil can remember the triangle-area formula but use a sloping side as the height. Another may identify the right height yet lose accuracy during calculation. These need different teaching.

Compare the full weekday and weekend routine, including travel, food, CCA, other subjects and recovery time. Confirm the actual teaching venue and suitable group availability. A useful Sembawang plan leaves the child able to revisit the idea later.

CHAPTER 1 OF 6

1. Choose the height that belongs to the base

Back to contents

In the triangle-area formula, the height must be perpendicular to the chosen base. It is not automatically the longest line or the side that looks most upright on the page.

Ask the pupil to identify the right angle between the base line and the height. Rotating the diagram should not change the relationship.

Bring the original attempt to the tutor. If the pupil chooses a length by appearance, begin with diagram interpretation. If the base and height are selected correctly, inspect the arithmetic and units instead.

2. Weekdays can clarify a current diagram

Back to contents

A weekday lesson can help when school geometry questions have left the child unsure which measurement to use. The tutor can mark the base, its perpendicular height and the required area.

Compare two diagrams with different orientations. The pupil should explain the same perpendicular relationship rather than rely on a familiar picture.

Choose a school day with enough energy to discuss the drawing. A late slot after a demanding day may lead to memorising labels without understanding why they apply.

CHAPTER 3 OF 6

3. Weekends can connect equal areas and different shapes

Back to contents

A rested weekend can give time to compare triangles that share a base and height but look different. This helps separate the area relationship from the shape’s appearance.

The tutor can use a drawing to establish meaning, then move towards efficient calculations. The pupil should still identify the required measurements before substituting.

Leave a short follow-up later in the week. Change the diagram’s orientation or dimensions and ask for an independent first step.

CHAPTER 4 OF 6

4. Worked example: use the perpendicular height

Back to contents

A triangle has a base of 12 cm and a perpendicular height of 7 cm. A sloping side is labelled 9 cm. Find the area.

Area = 1/2 × base × perpendicular height = 1/2 × 12 × 7 = 42 cm².

The 9 cm side is not needed for this area calculation because it is not the perpendicular height for the stated base.

A useful check compares the triangle with a rectangle of base 12 cm and height 7 cm. That rectangle has area 84 cm²; the triangle’s area is half of it.

Now consider another triangle with the same 12 cm base and 7 cm perpendicular height, but with its top vertex shifted sideways. Its area remains 42 cm² even though its sloping sides change.

Try a fresh example: base 10 cm and perpendicular height 8 cm. The area is 40 cm².

Ask your child to explain the right-angle relationship before calculating. The formula is useful when the quantities chosen actually satisfy it.

CHAPTER 5 OF 6

5. Make diagram reading visible in a 3-pax group

Back to contents

A group of three can compare differently oriented triangles. Each pupil should identify a matching base and perpendicular height.

The tutor can then ask for independent calculations. A child who follows another pupil’s choice may still need help selecting measurements in a new diagram.

Ask for feedback on diagram reading, substitution and units. The group should match current understanding and school topics while allowing the tutor to inspect each child’s working.

CHAPTER 6 OF 6

6. Review the learning and the family week

Back to contents

After several lessons, compare a changed diagram with the original attempt. Does the child select the perpendicular height, organise the calculation and use square units without prompting?

A useful home check is to rotate a simple triangle drawing and ask for the same base-height pair. If the answer changes merely because the page turns, return to the perpendicular relationship before increasing the practice load.

Review the slot if CCA or other subjects change. A regular session is useful when the surrounding routine remains workable.
