PSLE Mathematics tuition for Novena families should fit the preparation target and the child’s usable energy. A weekday can help repair a repeated school-revision error. A weekend can offer a rested session for selected practice, careful correction and a later independent retry.
Confirm the examination year and whether your child takes Standard or Foundation Mathematics. The paper-format details here concern Standard Mathematics, subject code 0008, for examination from 2026. Foundation Mathematics uses its own specification.
Compare the whole preparation week, including travel, other subjects, corrections and rest. A useful weekday or weekend plan leaves the Novena family able to sustain it and the child able to recognise a relationship in changed wording.

SEAB’s Standard Mathematics specification from 2026 gives Paper 1 50 marks and 70 minutes, without calculators. Paper 2 has 50 marks and 80 minutes, with calculators allowed.
Use the official document for the child’s examination year and level. Older questions can support practice, but differences should be identified before an older paper becomes an exact timed rehearsal.
Inspect the first uncertain decision in recent working. A pupil who treats every quantity in a before-and-after story as changing needs help locating the unchanged amount.
A weekday lesson can help when school revision repeatedly exposes the same modelling error. Bring the original attempt so the tutor can inspect the selected quantities.
When only one colour of counters is added, the other colour remains fixed. That unchanged count can connect the original ratio with the later condition.
Choose a day with enough energy for explanation. Keep home follow-up focused on identifying the unchanged quantity rather than adding another full paper after a demanding evening.

A rested weekend can provide room to draw the two stages and explain which bars change. Use an appropriate practice set once that relationship is clear.
Discuss uncertain correct answers as well as wrong ones. Ask whether the pupil understood the change, selected a suitable model and checked the result.
Reserve a later independent retry with new numbers. The method should remain available after the immediate demonstration has faded.

A box contains red and blue counters in the ratio 3:5. Twenty red counters are added, and the two colours then have equal counts. How many counters were in the box originally?
Blue counters are unchanged. They represent five original units. Red counters initially represent three units and must increase to five of those same units to match blue.
The added 20 red counters therefore represent two units. One unit is 20 ÷ 2 = 10 counters.
Initially there are 30 red and 50 blue counters, giving 80 counters altogether.
Check: adding 20 red produces 50 red and 50 blue. The new total is 100, so the original total and the final total are different.
A common error treats the added 20 as the new total. Label the change separately from the quantities before and after it.
Try a changed ratio of 2:7, with 25 red counters added to create equal counts. The increase is five units, so each unit is five. Originally there are ten red and 35 blue, a total of 45.
Ask your child to explain why the original unit size remains useful. The unchanged blue count provides the connection.

A small group of three can compare a bar model with a difference-based explanation. Each pupil should identify the unchanged colour and the added amount.
The tutor should then ask fresh independent questions. Following another learner’s drawing can help, but it should lead towards choosing the relationship alone.
Ask for feedback on interpretation, working and checking both stages. Match the group to Standard or Foundation level and current learning needs.

Record a few recurring errors and later independent checks. Shift attention when a relationship becomes secure across varied questions.
For a short home check, change which colour is added and ask the child to identify the fixed quantity before calculating. If the old model no longer fits, the pupil should explain how the representation changes.
Review Maths alongside other PSLE subjects and recovery time. A useful plan leaves time to understand corrections, not only complete attempts.
