50 essential travel vocabulary words for Comoros

Comoros has three official languages—Shikomori, French and Arabic—and uses the Comorian franc, KMF. Its capital Moroni is on Grande Comore. UNESCO inscribed its first World Heritage property in 2026: six historic medinas forming one cultural serial property. These 50 words and ten chapters connect useful questions with geography, food and heritage.

French-administered Mayotte is subject to a Comorian sovereignty claim and separate entry rules. The January 2026 US travel advisory is Level 2 because of crime, unrest and health risks. All practice bookings, fares and meals are hypothetical, not safety or service guarantees.

CHAPTER 1 OF 10

1. Three islands and a disputed fourth island

Back to contents

The Union of the Comoros comprises Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Ndzuwani (Anjouan) and Mwali (Mohéli). Moroni is on Ngazidja, Mutsamudu and Domoni on Ndzuwani, and Fomboni on Mwali. A travel document saying only “Comoros” cannot establish the exact island or town.

Mayotte, or Maore, is administered by France as an overseas department while the Comorian state claims it. This sovereignty dispute is unresolved; France’s entry requirements for Mayotte are not the same as the Union’s rules. Legal status is a different matter from local geography.

Use imaginary cards for Moroni, Mutsamudu, Fomboni, Mayotte and Karthala. Ask a partner which words name a city, an island or a volcano, then add a written address. Do not make up ferry times. A place name is useful when it leads to a precise question.

CHAPTER 2 OF 10

2. Official language and everyday island speech

Back to contents

The 2018 Comorian constitution identifies Shikomori, French and Arabic as official languages, with Shikomori named the national language. Shikomori includes major island varieties such as shiNgazidja, shiNdzuani and shiMwali. They should not be described as one identical accent.

French can help with some written services, while Arabic has religious and social uses. This table labels French and Arabic expressions explicitly instead of inventing a single translation for every local variety. The law’s language categories do not settle an individual speaker’s preference.

At an imaginary reception, read one French notice and an Arabic greeting. Ask a partner to explain which island variety a new local word comes from, and request its spelling. Listening to local speakers is more valuable than performing uncertain translations.

CHAPTER 3 OF 10

3. From greeting to confirmed information

Back to contents

Bonjour and merci belong to French; marḥaban and shukran to Arabic. The peace greeting as-salāmu ʿalaykum and its reply have social contexts. Knowing the greeting is valuable, but does not prove that you understood the subsequent name, number or instruction.

Je ne comprends pas identifies uncertainty, pouvez-vous répéter requests repetition and parlez lentement asks for slower French speech. Use them only where you and the other person actually share French, or ask for another common language.

Invent a booking with three details: name, room and meeting point. The partner changes one digit in the second round. Ask for the changed item rather than reciting the first answer. This is language practice, not a real booking.

CHAPTER 4 OF 10

4. A volcano and a marine park are not transport services

Back to contents

Karthala is an active volcano on Ngazidja. Activity, weather and local access conditions can change, so an old photograph cannot confirm safe passage. Knowing an island’s name also does not demonstrate that a ferry is operating on the desired date.

Mohéli Marine Park protects sensitive ocean ecosystems. UNESCO places it on the tentative World Heritage list rather than among the fully inscribed properties. The US January 2026 Level 2 travel advisory identifies crime, unrest and health issues and discusses small-boat risks.

On a fictional environmental map, sort volcano, coral reef, vessel and marine park as geology, ecosystem, transport and protected area. Ask what current evidence a genuine journey would require without inventing an itinerary.

CHAPTER 5 OF 10

5. KMF is Comorian money, not an African CFA franc

Back to contents

The Comorian franc carries code KMF and is issued by the Banque Centrale des Comores. It is distinct from XOF and XAF CFA francs, Madagascar’s MGA ariary and Seychelles’ SCR rupee. The word “franc” alone is not enough to complete a receipt.

The central bank confirms a fixed parity of 491.96775 Comorian francs per euro. It cautions against unlicensed currency exchanges. A structural currency peg does not guarantee the rate a particular counter will offer after fees.

Prepare classroom labels KMF 1,000, XAF 1,000 and SCR 1,000. Ask which one is Comorian, then alter a purchase quantity and calculate the new total. No live exchange quote or merchant acceptance is being asserted.

CHAPTER 6 OF 10

6. Mataba needs a question about the actual ingredients

Back to contents

Mataba or matava is a dish of processed cassava leaves commonly prepared with coconut milk. Cassava leaves require appropriate treatment and thorough cooking. Some recipes add fish, seafood or other foods, so a green appearance is not proof of vegetarian ingredients.

Coconut milk is distinct from dairy, but kitchens may use other ingredients. For allergies, the food provider must confirm what is actually in the dish and any cross-contact. A language guide cannot certify a recipe or replace safe food preparation instructions.

Create two pretend menu cards: mataba with coconut and mataba with added seafood. Ask which ingredients each contains; then swap an ingredient and update the answer. Learning food names should improve questions rather than create unsupported assurances.

CHAPTER 7 OF 10

7. Bread, spiced rice and lobster tell different food stories

Back to contents

Mkatra foutra is coconut-associated bread that can involve wheat, egg or sesame. Pilao is spiced rice that may be cooked with meat or vegetables. Langouste à la vanille is lobster prepared with a vanilla-flavoured sauce. These are different categories and not one uniform national meal.

Indian Ocean connections among East Africa, Arabia, Madagascar and other places influenced Comorian cooking. Individual kitchens still vary. Lobster is a shellfish allergen; wheat, egg and sesame can also matter when ordering bread.

Use a fictional menu with bread, rice and shellfish. Identify the likely ingredients, ask the cook for the actual recipe and change one item before repeating. You can appreciate culinary diversity without guessing whether a specific plate is safe.

CHAPTER 8 OF 10

8. Six medinas, one new UNESCO property in 2026

Back to contents

In 2026 UNESCO inscribed the Medinas of the Historic Sultanates of the Comoros as the country’s first World Heritage property. The six historic components are Moroni, Ntsudjini, Itsandra and Ikoni on Ngazidja, plus Mutsamudu and Domoni on Ndzuwani.

This is one cultural serial property with six components, not six separate listings. UNESCO’s description links the towns to Indian Ocean trade, Islamic and Swahili-related traditions, and social organisation including matrilineal practices. Some houses and sacred buildings retain living functions.

Create six museum labels under one UNESCO heading. Match four to Ngazidja and two to Ndzuwani, then explain how a tentative marine park differs from an inscribed historic property. Heritage vocabulary must preserve the distinction between designation and unrestricted access.

CHAPTER 9 OF 10

9. Anda and the zaffa are two different kinds of marriage heritage

Back to contents

Anda, often called grand mariage, is a Comorian institution connecting family relations, expensive celebrations and social status, particularly documented on Ngazidja. The World Bank has examined its role in social life and household resources. It is not an event that an outsider is automatically invited to attend.

In 2025 UNESCO inscribed zaffa wedding processions through a multinational intangible heritage nomination including Comoros and six other countries. Zaffa involves symbolic ceremonies and processions, but it is not identical to all local forms of the Comorian grand marriage.

Sort three labels: six UNESCO medinas, the zaffa intangible listing and Mohéli Marine Park’s tentative proposal. Ask who safeguards each and whether attendance or photography is permitted. People’s ceremonies are not public attractions by default.

CHAPTER 10 OF 10

10. A connected practice day makes the fifty words useful

Back to contents

Begin a wholly imaginary day by greeting a host, asking which island your reservation refers to and requesting a written address. The host changes the meeting point, so the learner must update that part of the record rather than replay old directions.

At a pretend lunch counter, distinguish mataba, pilao and mkatra foutra, check coconut, wheat and seafood, and write the total in KMF. Change an ingredient and a quantity before repeating the order; verify both new details.

Finish with an imagined museum exhibit classifying six medinas as one UNESCO property, zaffa as intangible heritage and Mohéli Marine Park as tentative. Say which facts have been verified and which real-world details still need checking. Fifty terms are a useful beginning, not mastery of a culture.
