Primary 4 Mathematics Tuition | Tampines West Weekday vs Weekend Parent Dilemma

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Subtracting a fraction from a mixed number can require a whole to be regrouped into smaller parts. A Tampines West parent looking at Primary 4 Mathematics tuition can use one example to check whether that exchange is understood, rather than treating it as a rule for changing numerators.

Choose weekday tuition when your child has enough attention left after school and travel. Choose weekend tuition when it offers a more settled learning window. Include food, rest and a separate day for a short independent revisit in either arrangement.

The example below is a starting-point observation, not a full syllabus checklist. Match the task to current school materials and readiness. The first independent attempt helps a tutor identify the step that needs attention.

Keep the amount unchanged when regrouping a whole

Use strips representing equal-sized wholes, each divided into four equal parts. One whole can be represented as four quarters without changing its amount.

A mixed number combines whole units with a fraction. When the fractional part is too small for the subtraction, one whole can be regrouped into parts of the same size.

Ask your child to show both representations and explain why they are equal. This makes the later subtraction easier to check.

Subtract three quarters from two and one quarter

Find 2 1/4 − 3/4. The one-quarter part is smaller than the three quarters being removed. Regroup one of the two wholes as four quarters.

The original amount becomes 1 5/4: one whole plus five quarters. Its value is still two and one quarter because four of those quarters make the regrouped whole.

Subtract three quarters from the five quarters. Two quarters remain beside the whole, giving 1 2/4 = 1 1/2. Check by adding 1 1/2 + 3/4 = 2 1/4.

Plan a sustainable week around the lesson

For a Tampines West family, compare the complete trip from the child’s actual starting point to the confirmed teaching venue. Include the wait, food and journey home. The lesson’s start time alone does not show the full weekly commitment.

A weekday lesson may provide support while a school question is still fresh. Check whether your child can arrive without rushing and whether homework and bedtime remain manageable. Attention needs room in the plan as well as time.

A weekend lesson may offer a calmer start. Look at sport, family commitments and other activities around it. A crowded weekend can leave little space to think, even when the lesson appears convenient on its own.

Review the arrangement after trying it. Note the child’s arrival energy, willingness to explain and first help needed during the later check. Discuss persistent fatigue and persistent mathematical uncertainty separately so the next adjustment addresses the actual need.

Inspect the meaning behind the method

In a 3-pax tutorial, ask how the tutor connects the written exchange with a representation of the same amount. Each learner should explain where the extra quarters came from.

A child who adds four to the numerator without reducing the whole-number part changes the amount. Keep both parts visible so the exchange can be checked.

Once regrouping is clear, subtraction of equal-sized parts becomes straightforward. Simplifying the result is a separate step: two quarters equals one half.

Check a different example independently

Later, try 3 1/5 − 4/5. Regroup one whole as five fifths to obtain 2 6/5. Remove four fifths, leaving 2 2/5.

Check by adding 2 2/5 + 4/5 = 2 6/5 = 3 1/5. The whole used for the exchange has not disappeared; it is represented in the fraction.

Record the first help needed with equivalent forms, regrouping or subtraction. Keep the original working so the tutor can see whether the quantity remained consistent.

Make the starting position clear

Bring current school materials, an independent attempt and a note of the first support needed. The Mathematics learning hub offers further explanations and learning routes. Keep original working visible so the tutor can inspect the decisions behind an answer that later needed correction.

Tampines West identifies the families addressed here. Confirm the teaching venue, travel and suitable 3-pax class placement directly; this guide does not establish a neighbourhood tuition branch. Check current lesson arrangements before planning the family’s weekly journey.

For a parent–student consultation, share your child’s level, learning concern, travel starting point and preferred weekdays or weekends. Ask about class fit, lesson times, fees and availability. Sign up after the starting position is clear and the weekly arrangement looks sustainable.
