Primary 5 Mathematics Tuition | Frankel Weekday or Weekend Parent Dilemma

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

For Frankel parents comparing Primary 5 Mathematics tuition, weekday or weekend should support a specific learning need. A child who rounds individual numbers correctly may still need help finding all the whole numbers that round to a stated result.

The useful distinction is between one possible original number and the complete range of possible originals. The endpoints show whether the pupil understands the halfway boundary.

Bring recent working before selecting a routine. Confirm the actual teaching venue and current availability, then include meals, travel, rest and a small independent follow-up in the weekly plan.

CHAPTER 1 OF 6

1. Identify the rounding place and boundary

Back to contents

Ask the child what ‘nearest hundred’ means. The decision depends on the neighbouring hundreds and their halfway points, not just the last visible digit.

Next, clarify that the question is about whole numbers. A greatest whole number below a boundary is different from describing all possible decimal values.

Inspect whether the pupil names a single example and stops. A range question requires a least value, greatest value and an explanation of why adjacent values fall outside it.

CHAPTER 2 OF 6

2. Use weekdays for a focused endpoint check

Back to contents

A weekday lesson can revisit one recent reverse-rounding question while the wording is familiar. Mark the target hundred and its neighbours.

Allow a settling pause after school. A hurried pupil may include both halfway values without checking which way each rounds.

On another day, change the target number. Ask for the halfway boundaries first, then the least and greatest whole numbers. This checks the reasoning rather than answer recall.

CHAPTER 3 OF 6

3. Use weekends to connect a number line and the rule

Back to contents

A weekend slot can compare forward rounding with finding the original range. A number line makes the two halfway boundaries visible.

Let the pupil test values just inside and just outside each boundary. Those checks are more revealing than many examples near the middle of the range.

Keep a short midweek revisit. A longer explanation helps when the child can recover the endpoint decisions independently without a completed diagram beside them.

CHAPTER 4 OF 6

4. Worked example: find the complete whole-number range

Back to contents

A whole number rounds to 1200 when rounded to the nearest hundred, using the usual rule that a halfway value rounds up. Find the least and greatest possible original numbers.

The halfway point between 1100 and 1200 is 1150. This rounds up to 1200, so 1150 is included.

The halfway point between 1200 and 1300 is 1250. This rounds up to 1300, so it is excluded.

The least possible whole number is 1150. The greatest is one less than 1250, which is 1249.

Check the outside neighbours: 1149 rounds to 1100, and 1250 rounds to 1300. Neither belongs in the required range.

Naming 1200 alone gives a possible original, but not the full range. The question asks for the extremes among all qualifying whole numbers.

Fresh check: whole numbers rounding to 4700 to the nearest hundred run from 4650 to 4749 inclusive. Test 4649 and 4750 to confirm the boundaries. The stated rounding convention and whole-number condition determine these endpoints.

CHAPTER 5 OF 6

5. Use 3-pax support to hear the endpoint explanation

Back to contents

Premium 3-pax support can give each pupil room to explain why one halfway value is included and the other is excluded. Ask how this reasoning is checked individually.

One child may use the wrong rounding place. Another may find the lower boundary correctly but include the upper halfway value. Their feedback should address different decisions.

Request a fresh independent question and a clear learning goal. Small-group attention is useful when each pupil’s explanation shapes the response, not merely when a shared range is copied.

CHAPTER 6 OF 6

6. Review the neighbours as well as the range

Back to contents

Use a new target and ask for both endpoints plus one excluded neighbour on each side. Every rounding check should agree.

Keep a short record of the first prompt still needed. A precise observation helps the next discussion more than a broad description of carelessness.

Choose the weekday or weekend slot that supports alert participation and manageable follow-up. Adjust the routine if lessons repeatedly remove recovery time.

Match practice to the pupil’s year and current school scope. Begin with diagnosis before enrolment, and confirm the actual venue and available arrangements directly.
