How Singapore Education Works | Building Honest Evidence for a University Application

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

A university application becomes clearer when the applicant can connect a degree choice to real preparation. Students searching for aptitude-based admissions in Singapore need to understand the chosen university’s current process and explain their own experience accurately.

Did you know? NUS currently describes a holistic approach that considers grades alongside interest, aptitude and preparation. It asks applicants to record achievements or activities and answer short-response questions, with further assessments possible for shortlisted applicants. Read NUS’s current admissions guidance. Do not assume another university uses the same form.

This guide focuses on assembling truthful, relevant evidence. It does not predict admission or replace qualification and programme prerequisites.

PART 1 OF 5

Begin with the correct qualification route

Identify the qualification held, the degree sought and the intended intake. Use the university’s admissions page for that applicant category.

Keep programme prerequisites, application dates and requested materials together. A strong account of interest should accompany the requirements, rather than be used to assume they no longer apply.

Our polytechnic diploma-to-degree guide provides a companion for one route. Other qualifications require their own current official guidance.

PART 2 OF 5

Choose experiences that reveal preparation

Select examples that you can explain: a project, relevant work, volunteering, sustained activity or independent investigation. Name what you actually did.

A fictional applicant interested in computing might describe a small tool built for a real user, the problem it solved and what still needed improvement. The explanation matters more than inflating the tool’s reach.

Use the application’s instructions to decide what fits. NUS’s current page specifies up to four achievements or activities; other institutions may ask for a different selection.

PART 3 OF 5

Separate your contribution from the group’s outcome

For team work, explain your role and the decisions you made. Give appropriate credit to collaborators.

Keep supporting records where available, such as the original work, a verified activity record or a relevant supervisor’s confirmation requested by the process. Do not invent evidence when a record is missing.

If an experience was modest, describe it modestly and explain what you learned. Accuracy makes the account easier to discuss in a later interview.

PART 4 OF 5

Answer the question with a specific connection

Read each prompt closely. Use one concrete example and connect it to the question, rather than pasting a general personal statement into every response.

Explain why the degree’s actual learning interests you. Inspect modules and requirements using the institution’s official information and our CourseFinder shortlist guide.

The eduKate approach to understanding before performance provides a useful preparation principle: an applicant should understand their own experience and course choice before rehearsing polished language.

PART 5 OF 5

Review, submit and prepare for the next stage

Check dates, names, claims, documents and consistency across the application. Keep the final submitted version for reference.

If shortlisted, follow the institution’s current instructions for any additional information, test or interview. Prepare to discuss the evidence honestly rather than memorise an answer that exceeds what you did.

Use an ECG session when a degree choice remains uncertain. Bring actual course information and experiences.

Frequently asked question: Does holistic assessment mean grades are ignored? No. NUS explicitly considers grades alongside other factors. Frequently asked question: Can a paid activity guarantee admission? Do not infer that. Choose preparation for its learning value and follow the actual admissions requirements.
