How Singapore Education Works | KCare and a Clear Kindergarten-to-Care Handover

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Kindergarten Care helps families organise care beyond the MOE Kindergarten programme. Parents considering KCare need to connect the child’s learning session, meals, care time and collection into one reliable day.

Did you know? MOE states that KCare is available at all MOE Kindergartens and operates on weekdays until 7pm, including school holidays. Confirm the actual session, closure arrangements and enrolment details with the centre. Read MOE’s KCare guidance.

This guide concentrates on the daily handover rather than ranking centres. A clear arrangement helps the child know what happens next and gives adults a shared understanding of responsibility.

PART 1 OF 5

Distinguish the kindergarten session from care

Write down the MK session and the care period needed around it. Ask the centre how the child moves between the two.

MOE describes MK as a four-hour K1 or K2 programme. KCare addresses care beyond that session; it should not be assumed to be an additional four-hour academic class.

Our preschool visit guide helps families investigate the ordinary day before making an enrolment decision.

PART 2 OF 5

Confirm the start date and practical details

Ask which enrolment steps are required, when the place is confirmed and what the child should bring. An enquiry should not be treated as a secured arrangement.

Clarify meals, relevant care needs and the information the centre requires. Use its process for supplying personal details securely.

Make a short first-day plan. The child needs an age-appropriate explanation of where they will go and who will collect them, while adults handle the administrative work.

PART 3 OF 5

Agree how collection works

Confirm the authorised collection arrangements and how to communicate a change. Record the centre’s instructions for a delay or other unexpected disruption.

If several caregivers share the week, use one clear schedule. A parent changing a calendar privately is not the same as informing every adult involved.

The school-to-student-care handover guide concerns a later stage but highlights the same practical task: making the transfer of responsibility explicit.

PART 4 OF 5

Check the holiday calendar separately

Ask for the current operating and closure information. A service described as including school holidays still has the centre’s applicable calendar and procedures.

Plan work and collection around the confirmed dates. Do not reuse an earlier year’s schedule without checking it.

Use the provider’s information about holiday routines to help the child anticipate a different day. Avoid assuming that term-time and holiday activities follow the same timetable.

PART 5 OF 5

Keep fees, support and the child’s experience visible

Obtain the current fee information and ask which subsidy process applies. MOE’s MK fees and assistance page is an official starting point.

Review whether arrival, transitions and collection are working. Share a specific concern with staff rather than changing several parts of the routine at once.

The eduKate focus on a clear starting point applies as a general planning principle. For a kindergarten child, care and a manageable day come before adding unnecessary commitments.

Frequently asked question: Is KCare the same as primary-school student care? They serve different educational stages. Frequently asked question: Does an MK place automatically settle every KCare step? Confirm the actual care enrolment process with the centre.
