How to decide which Physics Tutor to go to? | Turkey

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Choosing a Physics tutor in Türkiye (Turkey) in October 2026 starts with an unusually important question: is the student in the new MEB Maarif Model curriculum cohort or still following the previous Physics programme? In school year 2026–27, those can be different. A parent choosing fizik özel ders, fizik öğretmeni, TYT fizik kursu or AYT fizik özel ders should know the difference before booking.

A good tutor does more than deliver shortcuts. They turn a student’s uncertainty about force, motion, energy or electricity into a model the student can use on a new question. This guide is for families in Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir and elsewhere, including those comparing LGS science support, Grade 9–12 Physics, YKS examinations and vocational or university pathways.

The key 2026–27 distinction: Grades 9–11 use a newer model; Grade 12 is different

Türkiye’s Ministry of National Education (MEB) published the 2026–27 upper-secondary teaching-plan announcement on 1 September 2026. It says the Türkiye Yüzyılı Maarif Modeli applies in preparation classes and Grades 9, 10 and 11 during 2026–27, whereas Grade 12 continues with the previous curriculum. The Ministry also published separate lesson plans for schools to support consistent instruction and assessment.

This is not just an administrative label. For a Grade 11 learner, MEB’s current Force and Motion unit expects students to reason through free fall, two-dimensional constant acceleration, Newton’s laws, free-body diagrams, friction and circular motion. The 2026–27 official Grade 11 Physics textbook, last updated on 3 October 2026, gives a current document to ask the tutor about.

A Grade 12 student who is taught as though all Grade 11 reform materials are also their own new programme may end up with the wrong schedule. Ask the teacher to use the student’s actual school textbook, grade-specific learning objectives and recent assessments. This matters just as much at a science high school, vocational high school or international school where subject sequences and expectations may differ.

Before this upper-secondary choice comes Grade 8 and the LGS transition. Students preparing for LGS study Fen Bilimleri (Science) rather than sitting the TYT or AYT Physics tests. A learner weak in graphs or force diagrams may need age-appropriate science and mathematics support before specialist YKS preparation. The eduKate Türkiye Grades 5–12, LGS and lise guide explains these stages.

TYT and AYT Physics are not identical classes

Higher-education applicants commonly hear about YKS, the national examination administered by the Ölçme, Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi (ÖSYM). The main stages are the Temel Yeterlilik Testi (TYT) and Alan Yeterlilik Testleri (AYT); language candidates may also encounter YDT. A learner seeking engineering may need AYT-level science and mathematics depending on their intended degree’s requirements, but a student planning a different route may not need the same test preparation.

For 2026, ÖSYM scheduled TYT on 20 June and AYT on 21 June, with answer keys and basic booklets published afterward. The agency’s 6 February 2026 examination announcement and official 2026 question-booklet and answer-key directory establish those facts. As of October 2026, those examinations have passed; the tutor must check the separately issued 2027 guide and calendar before making a new timetable.

A worthwhile teacher should distinguish three student goals in writing: understand the current school Physics course, prepare for a particular weighted school assessment and develop readiness for the chosen university-admission test. They overlap but cannot simply be collapsed into an exam-question marathon. A good tutor will also respect that the current MEB Grade 11 programme values scientific inference, evidence and models rather than test speed alone.

Try this Physics audition: seismic waves are a lesson in graph reading

Türkiye is a place where earthquake science can motivate serious physical questions, without using disaster anxiety as a sales pitch. A tutor can use an idealised scenario about two seismic signals to test whether a learner understands distance, speed, travel time and what a simplified model leaves out.

Imagine a fictional seismic station exactly 60 kilometres from a hypothetical source. Suppose a faster wave travels along its path at a constant 6 km/s and a slower wave at a constant 4 km/s. Their ideal travel times are 10 seconds and 15 seconds, so the time difference is 5 seconds. Ask the student to draw a distance–time graph for both waves and state why the faster signal arrives first.

Then the tutor should make the physics more honest. Actual seismic waves have changing velocities and more complex paths through different materials; a single timing difference does not establish an earthquake’s location or strength. Real seismology requires multiple observations and carefully validated models. These invented numbers are only for classroom graph-reading practice, not earthquake forecasting or emergency guidance.

This example reveals a tutor’s judgment. Can they distinguish an interesting real-world application from an oversimplified claim? Can they move from words to a graph, from a graph to numerical quantities and from the numerical result to the conditions under which it applies? A student who can do all three will understand much more than one equation.

How to diagnose a student who says ‘I am bad at Physics’

The phrase hides several different learning problems. One student understands mechanics verbally but cannot rearrange equations. Another computes correctly but cannot tell which direction a force acts. A third knows a graph’s slope formula but confuses the horizontal and vertical axes. A fourth reads the Turkish scientific sentence incorrectly and therefore solves the wrong problem. Each needs a different first lesson.

Ask the tutor to inspect two genuine school answers and say where the earliest wrong step happened. If it was a ratio error, repair the mathematics. If it was a force misconception, use a diagram and contrasting examples. If it was language, practise carefully reading scientific conditions. Then ask an unfamiliar problem without the worked solution displayed.

  • Current programme: can the teacher distinguish MEB’s 2026–27 Grade 9–11 Maarif Model from Grade 12’s continuing earlier curriculum?
  • Actual exam: is this LGS Fen Bilimleri, school Physics, TYT Science or an AYT Physics preparation goal?
  • Curriculum evidence: can they point to official MEB learning outcomes and ÖSYM’s relevant current examination guide?
  • Student reasoning: during a trial, does the learner draw, explain, calculate and discuss a changed question?
  • Learning load: will homework be targeted rather than an unmanageable pile alongside school and other subjects?
  • Transparency: who teaches, how many attend, how are errors corrected, what does tuition cost, and when is progress reviewed?

Should you choose private lessons, a dershane or a small class?

Private tutoring can be worth the cost if the student’s prerequisite map is jagged—perhaps strong in algebra but uncertain about energy conservation. A small group can stimulate excellent discussion if every participant must explain their solution and receives feedback. Larger test-preparation courses can suit candidates who already have strong foundations and need well-organised practice with the right official exam programme. The format should follow the diagnosis.

An expensive course is not necessarily a good course; a high-volume question bank is not automatically good teaching. Ask the teacher how they would respond if a student repeats the same mistake after one week. A tutor who can change explanations, isolate misconceptions and adjust practice is more useful than one who simply repeats the correct answer.

After lise: MYO, vocational education and degrees

Türkiye provides multiple routes after secondary school, including university bachelor’s degrees, two-year ön lisans programmes at meslek yüksekokulları (MYO), and vocational and technical education pathways. They are not direct copies of Singapore’s junior college, polytechnic or ITE systems. Their individual course, credential and YKS entry rules decide what the student must prepare.

A learner interested in electrical equipment, manufacturing or robotics may benefit immediately from measurement, circuits and safe technical reasoning. A student targeting civil, mechanical, aerospace or energy engineering may need deeper AYT mathematics and Physics and eventually formal calculus. A Physics tutor should explain why that progression matters, rather than pushing every learner into the same entrance course.

If a future engineer is interested in Istanbul’s transport and water infrastructure, eduKate’s Istanbul and Bosphorus city-life guide offers a separate local perspective. It is for geographic curiosity, not exam-science authority. For a light language-learning companion, see Türkiye vocabulary.

The first month should change one thing demonstrably

Week 1: identify an error in two genuine school questions. Week 2: repair the missing graph, force, equation or language connection. Week 3: change the scenario—seismic signals to moving trains, or an electricity problem to a new circuit—so the learner must select the principle. Week 4: retest without notes and agree on the next objective. This is especially important when pupils move between curriculum cohorts.

A good sign is a student who can explain why two waves in a toy model have different arrival times while recognising that actual seismology is more complex. Confidence should be earned through independent reasoning, not a tutor’s guarantee. eduKate’s How Science Works | Physics develops this idea in more depth.
