How Blockchain Works | What Is Proposer-Builder Separation?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Proposer-builder separation divides constructing a candidate block from formally proposing it. In Ethereum’s block-building ecosystem, this can improve specialisation but adds coordination and concentration risks.

Alicia’s school science fair lets Tricia prepare a timetable while Kai Kai submits the timetable for official acceptance. The builder and proposer have different jobs.

This is an easy-reading educational guide for children, parents and adults. No cryptocurrency purchase, real account or student personal data is needed. The school story is fictional.

The quick answer

Proposer-builder separation divides constructing a candidate block from formally proposing it. In Ethereum’s block-building ecosystem, this can improve specialisation but adds coordination and concentration risks.

A practical example

Alicia’s school science fair lets Tricia prepare a timetable while Kai Kai submits the timetable for official acceptance. The builder and proposer have different jobs.

How the technology works

Builders assemble candidate payloads, often responding to transaction-ordering incentives. Validators have consensus duties. Off-protocol arrangements such as MEV-Boost should not be confused with every proposed in-protocol mechanism.

What the system does not guarantee

Relays and builders may be unavailable or concentrated. A profitable candidate is not automatically valid. A network’s execution and consensus checks still apply.

A paper-only family activity

Let two children build competing six-presentation timetables and a third check the rules. Ask who chooses order and who is authorised to submit.

Ask which digital claim was established, which source provided it and what still needs real-world evidence. The paper exercise is not a cryptographically secure blockchain.

What happens when a component fails?

A missing network message, stale website, incorrect source statement or unavailable operator can cause different problems. Identify the failing layer before retrying or claiming success. A recorded transaction is not automatically a completed physical service.

When a simpler database is enough

An accountable school can usually manage bookings, certificates and corrections through a conventional database and signed audit records. A blockchain should be justified by a specific independent-verification, governance or settlement requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does this prove every outside claim is true?

No. It provides defined digital evidence under network rules. The accuracy of outside-world claims requires suitable independent evidence.

Does every blockchain use the same arrangement?

No. Bitcoin, Ethereum and permissioned networks differ. Network-specific implementation and consensus rules must be identified.

Can children learn without cryptocurrency?

Yes. Fictional paper activities are sufficient for the core concepts. No real keys or assets are necessary.
