A Secondary 3 SEC G2/G3 Chemistry tutor can use a deliberately incorrect solution to make a hidden reasoning step visible. For Hougang learners, the useful task is not merely ‘find the mistake’. The student needs to locate it, explain why it is wrong and construct the correct Chemistry before moving on.
The tutor prepares the correction before showing the error. This guide explains how to keep such tasks narrow, label fictional working clearly and finish with a fresh valid response. G2 and G3 materials must still match the learner’s actual Science or Chemistry course and examination year.

Chapters 1–3: Prepare and model
Chapters 4–6: Check and continue
Use an error-spotting task when the learner has enough relevant knowledge to examine the step. If the whole topic is new, begin with an accurate explanation rather than an unexplained wrong model.
Identify one main target, such as changing a chemical formula while balancing an equation. Avoid a page containing several unrelated errors if the teaching question concerns one decision.
Write the intended repair in the lesson plan. The tutor should be able to explain the correct principle before asking students to criticise the fictional work.
Mark the material as fictional working containing a deliberate error. Do not present it as an official answer key or as a classmate’s mistake.
Keep the task short enough that the correction can be completed in the same teaching sequence. If time is running out, use an accurate worked example instead of introducing an error that will remain unresolved.
Prepare a clean final version for revision notes. The learner should not later find an isolated incorrect equation with no visible correction beside it.
For the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen to form water, show the labelled incorrect proposal H₂ + O₂ → H₂O₂. The formula on the right represents hydrogen peroxide, not water, so changing the product formula has changed the substance.
The correct balanced equation is 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. It has four hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms on each side. The coefficients change the relative numbers of molecules; the formula of water remains H₂O.
Ask the learner to explain why atom counting alone is insufficient if the substances have first been changed. Balancing must preserve the stated reactants and products as well as conserve the numbers of atoms.
A complete response identifies the altered formula, explains that the product identity changed and supplies the correctly balanced equation. Circling a symbol without explaining the issue gives less evidence.
If the student finds a different genuine problem in the material, inspect it rather than forcing the planned answer. Teaching resources also need checking.
Keep discussion focused on the work. Avoid describing the fictional writer as foolish or careless. The point is to practise a better decision, not to attach embarrassment to an error.
After repairing the example, give an appropriate new equation using familiar substances. Ask the student to balance it from the start, without an incorrect solution to react to.
This checks whether the learner can generate the method rather than only recognise the tutor’s planted mistake. Record any cues used during the new attempt.
If independent construction remains difficult, teach the relevant step and reduce the task’s complexity. More error-spotting questions are not automatically the best repair.
Use the student’s actual school sequence and syllabus to choose examples. G2 Chemistry content sits within the relevant combined Science course, while G3 provision may be separate Chemistry or a combined Science course.
The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate applies from 2027. A student taking a 2026 examination should use the applicable documents for that examination, not be relabelled retrospectively.
In a 3-pax model, each learner should finish with an accurate individual response. A parent reviewing the work should be able to distinguish the deliberate error, the explanation and the final correct version immediately.
A checklist for the next lesson
| Check | What to make clear |
|---|---|
| Readiness | Has the underlying idea already been introduced? |
| Scope | Does the task target one meaningful error? |
| Label | Is fictional incorrect working clearly identified? |
| Repair | Are the reason and correct version completed? |
| Transfer | Can the learner construct a fresh valid response? |

For parents who want tuition to be clear, structured, and worth the time, begin with one recent piece of schoolwork and the student’s actual course details. Ask which teaching decision the next lesson will address and how independent understanding will be checked. If considering a 3-pax group, confirm current subject support, location and availability directly with the provider.
Curriculum references and scope
Match resources to the student’s actual course and examination year. G2 Chemistry content belongs within the relevant combined Science course; G3 may involve separate Chemistry or a combined Science course. The 2027 SEC references do not relabel a 2026 examination. The examples and suggested routines here are illustrative teaching tools, not official marking standards or reported student results.
