How Blockchain Works | What Is a Pure Function?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

A Solidity pure function is declared not to read or modify blockchain state. It calculates a result from its inputs and permitted local computation. Pure does not mean bug-free, secret, or free from all computing costs.

Alicia asks Tricia to calculate how many notebooks fit into four boxes holding six each. Kai Kai notices that the arithmetic needs only the numbers supplied; it does not need to inspect or update the school inventory database.

This is a beginner-friendly guide for parents, children and adults. The school examples are fictional and do not require cryptocurrency, real wallets or private student information.

The answer in one minute

A Solidity pure function is declared not to read or modify blockchain state. It calculates a result from its inputs and permitted local computation. Pure does not mean bug-free, secret, or free from all computing costs.

A familiar example

Alicia asks Tricia to calculate how many notebooks fit into four boxes holding six each. Kai Kai notices that the arithmetic needs only the numbers supplied; it does not need to inspect or update the school inventory database.

1. What pure means in Solidity

Solidity’s pure declaration restricts access to state and state-changing operations. The compiler checks specified restrictions, though developers must still review the code and its dependencies.

2. Pure and view are different

A view function may read blockchain state without modifying it. A pure function cannot read that state. A function that checks a stored booking balance is generally not pure, even if it makes no changes.

3. Inputs determine the intended calculation

A pure function can calculate a fee or transform a supplied value. It should not silently claim to know a live inventory balance or a student’s real examination score.

4. Pure does not mean zero cost

Calling a pure function locally may not require an on-chain transaction, but executing it as part of a transaction still consumes computation and may contribute to gas use.

5. The function can still be wrong

A mistaken formula, overflow assumption, rounding rule or unit conversion can produce a bad result. A pure function’s restrictions do not certify mathematical or business correctness.

6. Context and dependencies matter

Solidity has specific restrictions on which operations pure functions can perform. Do not assume an ordinary function labelled pure in another programming language follows identical rules.

7. An interface can describe pure

Solidity function declarations may specify state mutability. Applications still need a matching ABI and deployed contract to understand what an actual call does.

8. A family exercise with numbers

Give children two imaginary prices and a fixed discount rule. Compute the result on paper, then ask whether the calculation needed to inspect or change a school database.

9. When a normal calculator is better

A school’s ordinary software can perform calculations without a blockchain. Solidity pure functions matter when the justified application already uses smart contracts.

A five-question understanding check

What does the code represent? What does it read or change? Who is authorised to act? Which state or network reference applies? What physical-world fact remains outside the software? These questions separate technical validity from the truth of external claims.

A family learning activity

Use the paper exercise in the chapter. Introduce one mistake, stale value or missing approval, then ask the learner what can still be established. Paper analogies are not cryptographically secure systems.

When a simpler approach is better

A conventional database, signed form or ordinary program may meet a school’s needs with less complexity. Blockchain is justified only where its specific independent verification or governance properties solve a real requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does this prove a real-world claim is true?

No. Code establishes a defined digital property under its rules. External facts need appropriate evidence.

Can children learn without buying cryptocurrency?

Yes. The examples use invented records and paper activities only.

Is this universal to all blockchains?

No. These are Solidity-specific concepts. Other platforms may use different languages and execution models.
