How Blockchain Works | What Is a Solidity Struct?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

A Solidity struct groups related values into one custom data type, such as a booking’s identifier, owner and status. It helps organise contract logic but does not itself guarantee accurate records, private information or safe access controls.

Tricia keeps three separate lists for science-kit bookings: the kit number, borrower and return date. Alicia notices that entries can become mismatched. Kai Kai suggests a single booking card with all three fields.

This educational article is written for children, parents and adult beginners. The classroom examples are fictional; learning requires no cryptocurrency purchases, real keys or student personal information.

The answer in one minute

A Solidity struct groups related values into one custom data type, such as a booking’s identifier, owner and status. It helps organise contract logic but does not itself guarantee accurate records, private information or safe access controls.

A school story to explain the idea

Tricia keeps three separate lists for science-kit bookings: the kit number, borrower and return date. Alicia notices that entries can become mismatched. Kai Kai suggests a single booking card with all three fields.

1. Why grouping fields helps

A struct defines a named collection of fields with specific types. Developers can use it to represent one logical record more clearly than a loose collection of unrelated variables.

2. Types matter

A booking struct might include an address, a uint and a bool. The choice of types affects allowed values and how the contract interprets data.

3. Memory, calldata and storage differ

Solidity data locations affect how reference-type values are passed, copied or persisted. A struct in memory is not automatically a persistent change to contract storage.

4. Structs can appear inside mappings or arrays

A contract may map a booking identifier to a Booking struct, or keep an array of structs. Each arrangement has different access and iteration properties.

5. An organised record can still be wrong

A struct holding a student’s score does not establish that the mark was measured correctly. The institution still needs source evidence and a correction process.

6. Storage layout affects upgrades

Changing struct fields in an upgradeable implementation can create storage-compatibility problems. Developers must examine the actual layout and migration requirements.

7. Privacy does not follow from grouping

Putting names or marks in a struct does not hide them from network participants when the data is stored in publicly readable blockchain state.

8. The paper activity

Create booking cards with Kit, Borrower and Due Date fields. Mix separate lists to show mismatches, then use grouped cards and discuss what mistakes remain possible.

9. When to choose a conventional database

A school may be better served by relational tables with access controls. Solidity structs matter when a real on-chain application has been justified.

A family evidence check

Ask what the code stores or checks, which network and state reference apply, who may change the information and what remains a claim about the physical world. A valid contract state is not automatically an accurate school record.

A short paper activity

Use the exercise above, then change one value or permission. Ask the learner to explain what can be checked and what would require a person to investigate. This paper model does not provide cryptographic security.

When a conventional solution is preferable

A school may meet its needs with a database, role-based permissions, signed records and an audit trail. A blockchain is justified only when independent shared verification or governance addresses a specific requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does the mechanism establish real-world truth?

No. It establishes a technical property under its defined rules. External measurements and institutional claims require appropriate evidence.

Can children learn without cryptocurrency?

Yes. Fictional records and paper exercises teach the idea without financial exposure.

Is the concept the same on every blockchain?

No. These chapters describe Solidity and Ethereum-specific concepts. Other networks can use different languages and execution models.
