SJI began at Bras Basah Road in 1852
SJI’s official milestones records the arrival of six La Salle Brothers in 1852 and the opening of St. John’s School, its earlier name, on 22 July that year. Father Jean-Marie Beurel made a former chapel available for the school.
The founding scene gives a human scale to a long institutional history. An existing building was adapted for an educational purpose, with teachers and supporters making the school possible.
The name St. John’s belongs to that early chapter. When following the history, keep it connected with the institution that became known as St. Joseph’s Institution, rather than assuming it refers to an unrelated school.
A school’s first location and its current home can be far apart in time as well as geography. Bras Basah provides the beginning; Malcolm Road becomes central much later.
The decision to move to Malcolm Road
SJI’s chronology dates the relocation decision to 1984 and the start of school operations at Malcolm Road to 1988. A foundation-stone ceremony in 1985 fell between those milestones.
The move is also recalled in a 2022 anniversary speech by Teo Chee Hean, which identifies the need for improved facilities and more space for development.
The four-year sequence makes the change easier to imagine. A relocation starts with a decision and then passes through planning and building before pupils begin using the new premises.
That distinction is helpful if you encounter several dates associated with one campus. A foundation stone records a construction milestone; the year lessons begin records a different moment in the life of the school.
Bishan was a holding campus before the 2017 return
The milestones state that SJI moved to a Bishan holding campus in December 2013 in preparation for work at Malcolm Road. It returned to the redeveloped campus for the new academic year on 9 January 2017.
This was a temporary relocation within the Malcolm Road chapter. It explains why a Josephian’s recollections may centre on Bishan even though the institution’s present address is Malcolm Road.
For a pupil who experienced that period, the holding campus could have been the main setting of their school years. A place described as temporary in a building programme can still have a lasting place in personal memory.
Keep both scales in the story: the institution’s long relationship with a campus and the shorter span of an individual pupil’s time at school. Together they give a fuller picture of what the move meant.
Where is SJI now, and where can you find its stories?
The official contact page lists 38 Malcolm Road, Singapore 308274. For an enquiry or announced event, use the current school information and visitor arrangements.
SJI’s milestones record the opening of its Missio 1852 heritage museum on 7 August 2019. Anyone interested in access should enquire with the school; the historical record of its opening is not a public admission schedule.
The school’s My SJI Story collection offers another starting point through personal accounts. Choose one alongside the chronology to see how institutional dates connect with individual experience.
A simple route through the history is enough for a first reading: Bras Basah origins, Malcolm Road in 1988, Bishan during redevelopment, then the 2017 return. Each address becomes easier to understand when attached to its particular role in the school’s journey.
