These 20 words help children describe what moves, which way it moves and what a push or pull might change. Ages 7–9 is a flexible guide, not an entry test. Start with five words, an everyday example and one sentence. No special equipment or physical experiment is required.
Every word card contains all four languages. Choose a familiar language for understanding, then follow the same numbered card into another edition. Learning all four is optional: linking meanings is more useful than rushing through four lists.
Mandarin uses simplified characters and tone-marked pinyin. Hindi and Russian Roman spellings are approximate reading prompts, not exact pronunciation guides. Russian stress marks are learning aids and are normally omitted in everyday writing. Sentences show grammar changes: English “push” is a verb here; Hindi धक्का देना is an action phrase; “motion” is physical movement, not a political proposal. In this lesson Mandarin 速率 and Hindi चाल mean speed, without including direction.

Chapters 9–12
Movement is a change of position over time relative to something we have chosen as a reference. A counter can move relative to a table. A toy top can spin while its centre stays in roughly the same place: parts of the top still change position. “Nothing moved across the table” does not mean “nothing moved at all”.
Worked correction
Worked correction: “B finishes at 7, so B is faster.” Keep the useful observation: 7 really is B’s final position. Now ask for the starting positions and elapsed time. In our invented story, A moves straight from 0 to 4 and B from 5 to 7, each in two seconds without reversing. A covers 4 units; B covers 2. A therefore has the greater average speed over that interval. B finishes farther along the track, but does not travel farther.
A force can change speed, direction or shape, but the word “force” does not guarantee movement. A block initially at rest can remain at rest when the forces on it balance. We do not infer “no force” just because we see no motion. Equally, an object already moving need not have a continuing forward push to keep moving; in ordinary tabletop examples friction and other forces can slow it.
Read across one row, not down four disconnected lists. The numbers identify meanings shared by all four editions. A translation is a useful bridge, not a promise that every word fits every context. Match the word to its sentence and the visible action.
“Faster” and “slower” need a comparison. “Direction” answers which way, whereas “speed” answers how quickly distance is covered. The everyday English word “velocity” is not an extra target here; we do not use speed and direction as if they were the same question. “Start” and “stop” refer to movement in this lesson, not starting a book or stopping a conversation.

This is an original fictional learning story, not a report of a real experiment. The table supplies positions in arbitrary equal distance units along a straight track. The observations are at 0, 1 and 2 seconds. Both counters move towards increasing numbers without reversing. The page is not a scale drawing, and no physical measurement of the screen is needed.
Position readings alone do not reveal the size of the push or the complete motion between readings. Our story states that movement is straight and does not reverse, so start-to-end differences give the distances. Without that condition, an object could travel out and back: its distance travelled could exceed the difference between its positions.
| Counter | Position at 0 s | Position at 1 s | Position at 2 s | Distance in 2 s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 0 | 2 | 4 | 4 |
| B | 5 | 6 | 7 | 2 |
English · The Two Moving Counters
Mina and Ivo open an invented movement record. It shows two counters, A and B, travelling on parallel straight tracks with the same scale. Before reading all the entries, Mina predicts, “B will be faster because it finishes at 7.” Ivo keeps her prediction in their notebook rather than changing it afterwards.
They read the starting positions. A begins at 0 and B at 5. One second later A is at 2 and B at 6. At two seconds A is at 4 and B at 7. The story tells them neither counter reverses direction. “I compared the final positions, not the distances travelled,” Mina notices.
Together they record A’s distance as 4 − 0 = 4 units and B’s as 7 − 5 = 2 units. The time is the same: two seconds. “A has the greater average speed during these two seconds,” Mina explains. “B finishes farther along its track because it began farther along.” They can compare the whole interval, but the three readings do not prove exactly what happened at every instant between them.
Ivo asks, “Does that prove A received the stronger push?” Mina pauses. “No. These positions do not tell us the forces or all the starting conditions.” They turn to imagined examples: a ball rolls, a block slides, and a top spins. Each description tells them how an object moves; none by itself measures a force.
Finally they imagine a block, initially still, with balanced forces on it. It stays still relative to the table. “Still does not mean no forces,” says Ivo. They end their record with three headings: what we know, what we changed our minds about, and what we still need to find out.
A начинает у 0, B — у 5.
Use complete reasons, not just the word “faster”. Point to the starting position, the finishing position and the same time interval. A child may answer aloud, draw, gesture or use a familiar language first. The answer guide supports discussion; it is not a timed test.
1. Where does B begin and finish?
2. How far does each counter travel in two seconds?
3. Which has the greater average speed, and why?
4. Do these positions prove which push was stronger?
5. Can a block be still while forces act on it?
6. How do roll and slide differ in our examples?
7. Why is a spinning top not simply “motionless”?
8. What does friction resist between contacting surfaces?
9. If a counter travels out and returns, can final minus initial position give the whole distance?
10. Why keep the original prediction?
Discussion guide
- B begins at 5 and finishes at 7; those are positions, not distances travelled.
- Without reversing, A covers 4 − 0 = 4 units and B covers 7 − 5 = 2 units.
- A: more distance in the same two seconds. The final position alone is insufficient.
- No. We lack force measurements and information about other conditions.
- Yes. If it is initially still and forces balance, it can remain still.
- The ball turns as it travels; the block slides without turning over. Some real motions combine both.
- Parts change position around an axis even if the centre stays roughly in place.
- Relative sliding or its tendency; it can also help grip, so it is not always unwanted.
- Not generally. The outward and return parts both count towards distance travelled.
- It shows what we expected and how evidence changed our reasoning; revising is useful learning.
Five to ten relaxed minutes can be enough for one visit. Repeat a day when useful and stop before practice becomes tiring. A learner can understand the science in one language while gradually building words in another; language production and conceptual understanding need not progress at the same speed.
| Day | Words | Small activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Describe a push, a pull and a position using imagined objects. | Name the reference. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Use the story table to contrast direction and speed. | Same time, different distances. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Describe imagined rolling, sliding and spinning. | Turning can occur without travelling across the table. |
| 4 | 16–20 | Make and keep a prediction, then read the supplied record. | Separate data from explanations. |
| 5 | 1–20 | Retell the correction in a familiar language. | Keep the correct reading; repair the comparison. |
| 6 | Choose 5 | Follow the same five word numbers in a second edition. | Connect meanings before memorising sounds. |
| 7 | Review | Try the fresh C-and-D case and explain one uncertainty. | Transfer the method rather than copy an answer. |
If a learner says “B is faster because 7 is bigger”, the problem may be the comparison step, not the meaning of faster. Keep their accurate reading of 7. Ask “Where did B begin?” Then write 7 − 5 = 2 next to A’s 4 − 0 = 4. Keep “two seconds” beside both calculations. Retell the correction without erasing the first attempt.
If every push is called “movement”, separate action from result. Name the force first, then describe whether position changes relative to the table. If roll, slide and spin blur together, use imagined examples: a ball turning as it travels, a block moving without turning over, and a top turning in a small area. Real objects can combine these motions, so the categories are descriptions, not rigid boxes.
Friction is not simply “a bad force” or “roughness”. It can resist a sliding block and also help shoes grip. Touch alone does not reliably rank friction for every pair of materials. Do not explain every slowing object with a single cause from a picture: other forces may matter. For an optional comparison use adult-approved light toys on a clear low surface, gentle actions and a safe boundary. Never push people, animals, furniture or objects near an edge; avoid strings around the body, projectiles and small parts accessible to younger children. Imagined examples are equally acceptable.
Progress means using a word to make a useful distinction: “It finishes farther along, but covers less distance in the same time.” A learner who repairs this comparison has done more than recite a definition. Look for a chosen reference, an honest record, and reasons that fit the question. Needing a prompt is ordinary learning, not evidence of a fixed ability limit.
Try a fresh case: C moves straight from 2 to 8 in three seconds; D moves straight from 10 to 13 in the same three seconds. Neither reverses. C covers 6 units, D covers 3, so C’s average speed is greater even though D ends at 13. Now remove the equal-time condition: knowing only that C covers 6 and D covers 3 is not enough to compare average speeds. Ask how long each journey takes.
| Counter | Start | End | Time | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C | 2 | 8 | 3 | 6 |
| D | 10 | 13 | 3 | 3 |
Must my child learn all four languages at once?
No. Use one for meaning and add another when ready. The links preserve the same numbered word, so returning later is easy.
Does a force always make something move?
No. Consider the other forces and whether motion changes. An initially still object can remain still with balanced forces.
Is the counter at the highest mark always fastest?
No. Compare distance travelled and elapsed time, not final position alone. Our story deliberately gives different starting positions.
Do equal one-second position steps prove constant speed at every instant?
No. They give equal average speeds for those recorded intervals. Unrecorded changes can occur between readings.
Is friction always bad?
No. It can resist unwanted sliding and help grip. The effect depends on the situation and the contacting materials.
Do we need to push real objects?
No. Use the fictional table, drawings and imagined actions. Any optional hands-on task needs adult-approved materials and safe boundaries.
Are the four words perfect substitutes in every sentence?
No. Meanings, word forms and phrasing depend on context. Read the complete sentence; keep learning-aid Roman spellings separate from ordinary spelling.
What should we do after an incorrect answer?
Keep the part that was read correctly, identify the missing comparison, model one repair and try a fresh case. One answer is not a diagnosis of a child.
