A dolphin swims, a bat flies and a penguin swims too. Those actions do not give them the same animal-group name. This guide for children aged roughly 7–9 uses twenty words to connect body features, development and careful classification. The age band is flexible: an adult may read aloud, and five understood words can be a useful first session.
All four editions share numbered meanings, examples and an original story. Open a card’s matching number in English, Mandarin, Hindi or Russian. Explain the idea in a familiar language before practising another expression. Some translations are phrases, because a natural expression matters more than forcing every meaning into one word.
Mandarin uses Simplified Chinese with tone-marked pinyin. Hindi and Russian include approximate Roman reading aids; Russian stress marks are for learning and usually omitted in everyday writing. We use fictional information cards about real animal kinds. The activities need no live animals and make no claim about a national curriculum or complete scientific classification of all life.
Contents
1–4 · Start with a clear grouping rule
5–8 · Words 11–15: parts to compare
9–12 · A flexible seven-day practice plan
Begin by asking what kind of group you are making. A movement group can contain animals that fly, while a biological group uses body features, development and relatedness. Those are different jobs. A bat, a bird and a butterfly can all fly, but shared flight does not make them all birds. Keep the grouping rule visible instead of changing it halfway through a comparison.
Worked correction: keep the fact, repair the inference
Worked correction: “The dolphin lives in water and has a fin, so it must be a fish.” Keep both useful observations: the dolphin is aquatic and has a dorsal fin. Now read its information card: it breathes air with lungs and mothers feed young with milk. It belongs to mammals. The error is treating habitat or one shared feature as sufficient proof of a biological group.
Our group words are a starting vocabulary, not six boxes that contain every animal on Earth. Insects are one group of animals without backbones, not the name for all invertebrates. Fish is a familiar broad grouping. Here reptile refers to familiar non-bird reptiles; modern evolutionary trees place birds within the broader reptile lineage. A task can use familiar labels while acknowledging that scientific groupings have levels and relationships.
Read the map in useful pairs: group and feature, adult and young, wing and feather. Wings occur in different animal groups, while feathers are a strong identifying feature of living birds. Fur means mammalian hair covering, but a dolphin need not have an obvious furry coat. A picture can introduce a question without providing every fact needed to answer it.
Translations are chosen for this context. Hindi uses पर for a feather and पंख for a wing here; everyday usage can vary. English shell covers structures translated differently in Russian: раковина for a snail shell, панцирь for a turtle covering. A translation pair is a meaning bridge, not proof that those structures or animal groups are identical.

Try it: Classify one card, then say what further information would help.
The story uses original fictional information cards about a dolphin, a bat, a penguin and an adult butterfly. Each card supplies selected facts for reasoning, not a complete species description or a record of classroom observations. Some facts, such as milk production or an internal backbone, come from background information rather than a visible outline. Keep visible observations separate from source-supplied facts.
Our adult butterfly card gives the typical insect plan: three body regions, six jointed legs and one pair of antennae. Two antennae are one pair, and three pairs of legs are six legs. This describes the body plan, not a rule that an injured insect must have every leg visible. Young insect forms may look different, so record the developmental stage before using a body-count rule.
| Card | Relevant facts | Supported group / limit |
|---|---|---|
| Dolphin | Water; dorsal fin; lungs; milk feeding | Mammal. Water and fin alone are insufficient. |
| Bat | Flight; hair; milk feeding | Mammal. Flight does not prove bird. |
| Penguin | Feathers; backbone; swims | Bird. Air flight is not required. |
| Adult butterfly | Three body regions; six legs; two antennae | Insect. Use the specified adult stage. |
| Fish / lizard | Both can have scales | Shared scales alone do not decide the group. |
| Snail / turtle | Both have a protective shell in broad English usage | Mollusc / reptile; different structures and groups. |
| Adult butterfly feature | Count | What the count means |
|---|---|---|
| Body regions | 3 | Head, thorax, abdomen |
| Legs | 6 = 3 pairs | Jointed legs |
| Antennae | 2 = 1 pair | One pair does not mean one antenna |
English · Four cards, two rules
Mira sets out four information cards. Dolphin: water, dorsal fin, lungs and milk for its young. Bat: flight, hair and milk for its young. Penguin: water, feathers and a backbone. Adult butterfly: wings, three body regions, six jointed legs and two antennae.
“Let us put the animals that move through water together,” says Arun. He chooses dolphin and penguin. Mira agrees: that is a useful movement group. Then she changes the question: “Which biological groups do these cards support?”
Arun moves dolphin beside bat under mammal. He points to milk-feeding information on both cards. Penguin goes under bird because it has feathers. Butterfly goes under insect using its adult body plan. He does not put bat under bird merely because it flies.
Mira covers the names and asks Arun to explain the changes. “The animals did not change,” he says. “Our grouping rule changed. I kept the water observation, but I needed different information for the biological groups.” They write one final question: what extra information would a plain outline leave out?
Answer aloud, point to a fact card or draw a labelled comparison. Try “I keep the observation ___, but the group is ___ because ___.” Give time to choose the rule and the evidence. The checking guide is visible below. An explanation in the learner’s strongest language is welcome before trying another language.
1. Why is “it swims, so it is a fish” insufficient?
2. Which supplied facts connect dolphin and bat?
3. How do bat and penguin challenge a flight rule?
4. How many legs and antennae on the adult butterfly card?
5. Does every animal with scales belong to one group?
6. Can a shell put snail and turtle in the same biological group?
7. Why ask adult or young before counting body features?
8. What would a silhouette fail to establish?
9. Where should the adult spider go?
10. How can four languages support one explanation?
Checking guide
- Swimming is movement shared by dolphins, penguins and many fish. The biological question needs relevant body and development information. Keep the swimming observation; change the inference.
- Both are mammals; females feed young with milk, and both breathe air with lungs. A dolphin’s mammalian hair can be sparse; obvious fur is not required.
- The bat flies but is a mammal. The penguin is a bird but does not fly through air. Flight is neither enough nor necessary to identify a bird.
- Six legs are three pairs; two antennae are one pair. Together with three body regions, these support the typical adult insect plan.
- No. Many fish and familiar reptiles have scales. Compare more relevant facts rather than treating a shared covering as a complete classification rule.
- Not by itself. A turtle is a reptile with a backbone; a snail is a mollusc without a backbone. Shell is a useful comparison word, not sufficient group proof.
- Development can change the visible form. The butterfly task specifies the adult stage. Do not apply its exact visible plan blindly to larvae or to an injured animal.
- It may show a wing without clear feather detail and cannot establish milk feeding or internal structures. Ask for information instead of inventing an unseen feature.
- Arachnids, another group. Its typical eight legs, two main body regions and lack of antennae do not match the adult insect plan. Not all invertebrates are insects.
- Choose a card and preserve the same fact while locating its four word equivalents. Explain in the strongest language first. Translation practice should not change the biological claim.
Use five to ten calm minutes and pause earlier if needed. This flexible plan does not promise a fixed learning speed. The supplied cards and paper drawings are enough; no animal handling or collecting is required. Revisit one contrast at a time and keep its meaning steady while changing the language.
| Day | Words | Activity | Notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Match group words in a familiar language and one new language. | Meaning before speed. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Compare feather, fur and scale with picture or word cards. | A shared covering is not a full rule. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Compare wings and shells; count butterfly legs and antennae. | Pairs and individual counts agree. |
| 4 | 16–20 | State stage, feature and rule in one explanation. | Ask about missing information. |
| 5 | 1–20 | Read the shared story and retell its change of rule. | Animals stay the same; grouping purpose changes. |
| 6 | 1–20 | Try five discussion questions; check and revise one answer. | Preserve useful observations. |
| 7 | 1–20 | Use ostrich, rabbit and spider, then add a language equivalent. | Transfer the reason, not only the label. |
If the learner uses habitat as a group rule, keep the dolphin and penguin together in a water-use group, then make a separate biological comparison. There is nothing wrong with grouping by habitat when that is the stated task. The mistake is silently changing the question from “where does it live?” to “which biological group?” without changing the evidence used.
If flight is treated as proof of being a bird, compare the bat’s hair and milk information with the penguin’s feathers. The bat flies and is a mammal; the penguin does not fly through air and is a bird. Two counterexamples repair both directions of the mistaken rule. Do not replace it with another oversimplification such as “all mammals live on land”.
If the relationship is understood but a translated term is hard to recall, preserve the reasoning and practise that language link. If the word is fluent but the reason relies on one shared feature, return to the information card. A vocabulary gap, an incomplete observation and a grouping-rule gap need different next steps; none is a diagnosis of the child.
Try three fresh cards: an ostrich with feathers that does not fly through air; a rabbit with hair and milk-feeding information; and an adult spider with the typical eight-leg, two-body-region plan and no antennae. The first is a bird, the second a mammal, and the spider belongs to arachnids rather than insects. A group list can leave room for “another group” instead of forcing every animal into the six introductory labels.
A useful progress sentence is “I can name the rule, use more than one relevant fact and say what information is missing.” Explain one card in a familiar language and find its matching words elsewhere. A silhouette may show wings without showing feathers clearly; missing picture detail is a reason to ask for information, not to invent an absence.
| New card | Reason | Conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Ostrich | Feathers; no flight through air | Bird; flight is not required. |
| Rabbit | Hair; females feed young with milk | Mammal; several related facts. |
| Adult spider | Typical eight legs, two body regions, no antennae | Arachnid; another group, not insect. |
Who is this vocabulary set for?
Ages 7–9 are a flexible guide. An adult can read the cards aloud; a confident learner can compare the evidence and translate independently. Readiness matters more than completing every word in one sitting.
Must a child learn all four languages at once?
No. Start with one familiar language and one new equivalent. All editions keep the same numbered words, examples and story so further languages can be added without changing the task.
Are pinyin and Roman letters exact pronunciation?
They are reading aids, not audio. Mandarin pinyin marks tones; Russian accents here mark stress for learners. Hindi and Russian Roman forms are approximate guides and do not replace the original scripts.
Are the six group labels a complete animal classification?
No. They are introductory words with different scientific relationships. Arachnids and molluscs already show why “another group” is needed. Modern evolutionary classifications also place birds within the broader reptile lineage.
Why is dolphin a mammal with no obvious fur?
A thick coat is not required. Dolphins breathe with lungs, females produce milk, and hair occurs at some stage, often sparsely. Use the combination and biological information.
Does every wing mean feathers?
No. Bats and insects have wings without bird feathers. A penguin has feathers and is a bird despite not flying through air.
Are all animals without backbones insects?
No. Spiders, snails and many other animals lack backbones but are not insects. Insect is one more specific group, with a typical adult body plan.
How do we tell whether the lesson is helping?
Ask for one justified classification and one question about missing information. A correct label without a reason may be a memory result; a clear reason with a hesitant new word may show understanding that needs language practice.
