CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · Back to contents

1. Start with the sentence job

Prophecy is a noun naming a prediction, while prophesy is a verb naming the act of predicting. The practical question is therefore grammatical before it is visual: does the blank name something, or does it show what a subject does? A learner who answers that question can choose reliably even when both words sound alike.

Determiners and possessives often open noun phrases: a prophecy, the prophecy, her prophecy. Subjects, auxiliaries and modals help build verb phrases: they prophesy, she prophesied, will prophesy. These are cues, not magic keywords; confirm them by reading the whole clause.

Use two substitutions. Try prediction for the noun and predict for the verb. Only one should preserve the grammar. Then restore the intended word and apply the correct number or tense.

  • Label noun or verb.
  • Substitute prediction or predict.
  • Choose number or tense form.
  • Reread and reject the alternative.

2. Control the noun family

The singular noun is prophecy. It can be counted, described and possessed: one prophecy, an ancient prophecy, the sailor’s prophecy. Its regular plural is prophecies, with final y changing to ies.

A noun answer may still be wrong if number is ignored. “Several prophecy” has the right word family but the wrong form. Record the evidence as role, meaning and form: noun; prediction; plural. This three-part note makes editing precise.

A prophecy is a claim about the future, not proof that the event will happen. In comprehension, keep the prediction, supporting clues and later outcome separate. Do not call it fulfilled unless the passage supplies matching evidence.

CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · Back to contents

3. Control the verb family

The base verb is prophesy. Useful forms are prophesies, prophesied and prophesying. The form depends on subject agreement and time. “She prophesies” describes habitual present action; “she prophesied” places the action in the past.

Modals take the base form: may prophesy, could prophesy, will prophesy. The infinitive also uses the base form: to prophesy. Continuous action uses an auxiliary plus prophesying.

When correcting a verb, reread the passage timeline. A learner may identify the verb family correctly but select a present form inside a past narrative. Vocabulary choice and tense control must agree.

4. Do not let sound overrule structure

Many speakers hear little contrast between the final syllables. Repetition by ear cannot carry the whole decision. Silent evidence—sentence role, word neighbours and inflection—remains available in every context.

Link spelling to function. The written -cy form names the thing; the written -sy base belongs to the action family. A memory cue is useful only if grammar still decides.

For a final check, say: noun or verb; prediction or predict; singular, plural or tense form. If all three answers agree, the spelling is controlled rather than guessed.

CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · Back to contents

5. Read claims and outcomes separately

A story may present a prophecy seriously, jokingly or metaphorically. The grammar does not change with tone. A joke can still contain the noun prophecy; a doubtful narrator can still report that someone prophesied.

Ask what the text establishes. Who made the prediction? What exactly was predicted? What happened later? Did the event match every important condition, only part of it, or none of it? These questions prevent hindsight from rewriting a vague prediction.

This evidence discipline transfers to Science and Mathematics. A claim must not be strengthened after the result is known. Preserve the original wording before comparing it with observations or data.

CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · Back to contents

6. Use morphology as evidence

Word endings reveal the grammar. Prophecies can be a plural noun, but prophesies can be a present-tense verb. Because the forms sound similar, the sentence must identify whether the word names multiple predictions or one subject’s repeated action.

Past prophesied and continuous prophesying clearly belong to the verb. An article cannot normally introduce those forms as a noun. Morphology narrows the possibilities before meaning completes the choice.

Do not merely memorise a list. Place each form in a full sentence, label subject or determiner, and paraphrase. The surrounding structure turns spelling into reasoning.

CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · Back to contents

7. Repair misconceptions at the first failed stage

If a learner writes prophesy after the, the first failure is sentence role. If the learner writes prophecy after will, the first failure is verb construction. If the learner writes prophecys, the first failure is plural formation.

Different failures require different practice. Role errors need noun–verb sorting. Meaning errors need paraphrase contrasts. Form errors need short inflection drills. Evidence errors need passage comparison between prediction and outcome.

A correction should state why the rejected form fails. “Not prophesy, because this slot names the prediction rather than expressing an action” builds a boundary that can be retrieved later.

CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · Back to contents

8. Examination control

Use a four-step routine: identify the slot, paraphrase the meaning, supply the required form, reread once. This is faster than repeatedly sounding out the pair and more recoverable when uncertainty appears.

If the item is multiple choice, predict the needed grammar before looking at options. If it is editing, check whether changing the target word exposes an agreement or tense problem nearby. If it is comprehension, do not confuse choosing the vocabulary with proving the prediction true.

Stop when independent checks agree. Endless rereading can replace evidence with doubt. A correct role label, paraphrase and inflection are sufficient for this distinction.

CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · Back to contents

9. Worked examples

Worked case 1: The villagers repeated an ancient ___ about the mountain.

Answer. prophecy. An and ancient introduce a singular noun naming a prediction.

Mechanism. Identify the sentence slot before spelling. Then test the meaning and the exact form required by number, agreement or time. This prevents a familiar-looking word from winning against the grammar.

Misconception repair. State why the rejected family cannot perform this job. If the family is correct but the ending is wrong, name that as a separate morphology error rather than treating the whole choice as guesswork.

Transfer. Rewrite with the plural noun after several. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 2: The traveller ___ that the bridge would collapse.

Answer. prophesied. The subject performs a completed action in a past narrative.

Transfer. Move the action into habitual present with a singular subject. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 3: Several ___ in the book contradict one another.

Transfer. Change to one prediction and preserve agreement. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 4: No one can ___ the exact score.

Answer. prophesy. A modal takes the base verb meaning predict.

Transfer. Turn the action into a noun after no. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 5: Her ___ frightened the crew.

Answer. prophecy. A possessive introduces the singular noun that names what frightened them.

Transfer. Add a second clause showing whether evidence later confirmed it. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 6: The character often ___ disaster before a journey.

Answer. prophesies. A singular third-person subject takes the present verb ending.

Transfer. Make the subject plural and adjust the verb. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 7: Edit: “The oracle’s prophesy was copied.”

Answer. prophecy. The possessive opens a noun phrase, so the noun spelling is required.

Worked case 8: The speaker was ___ a difficult year.

Answer. prophesying. The auxiliary was builds a continuous verb phrase.

Transfer. Replace it with “was reading a prophecy” and label the noun. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 9: The ___ remained untested at the end.

Answer. prophecy. The determiner introduces a noun; the ending says the outcome was not checked.

Transfer. Write one observation that would test the claim. Return after a delay and justify the revised answer without a printed word pair.

Audit. Check role, paraphrase, inflection and full-clause logic. If the sentence reports a prediction, keep the claim separate from any later evidence about whether it came true.

Worked case 10: He tried to ___ the future, but his ___ was vague.

Control question. What exact word or structure in the sentence rules out the other family? Write that evidence in five to twelve words.

Practice 14: Delayed edit: “The narrator prophecy that the visitors would leave.”

Explained answer. Use prophesies for present narration or prophesied for past narration.. The finite verb must match both subject and timeline.

Delayed-transfer task. Add a second sentence containing the noun prophecy. On the return attempt, cover this answer and reconstruct the decision from grammar and meaning.

Control question. What exact word or structure in the sentence rules out the other family? Write that evidence in five to twelve words.

CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · Back to contents

11. Delayed transfer

On day one, sort clear noun and verb examples. On day three, mix plural nouns with singular present verbs because prophecies and prophesies look and sound close. On day seven, edit a paragraph containing all major forms without a word bank. The spacing exposes whether the learner can retrieve the rule independently.

Build an error log with three columns: sentence role, intended meaning and required form. Record only the first failed stage. A role error needs clause analysis; a form error needs inflection practice; an evidence error needs comparison between the prediction and the later event.

Write a six-sentence micro-story containing prophecy, prophecies, prophesy, prophesies, prophesied and prophesying. Underline the cue for each. Then remove the underlining and ask another learner to reconstruct every decision.

Transfer the distinction to unfamiliar topics such as weather, sport, school events and a fictional expedition. Topic changes prevent one memorised legend from carrying the answer. The noun–verb mechanism should remain stable.

In timed work, perform the full reasoning mentally but write only what the item requests. Use the shortest reliable sequence: slot, meaning, form, reread. Stop once the checks agree.

A final production test asks the learner to create a sentence where both forms appear naturally. The explanation must name the determiner or possessive that introduces the noun and the subject or auxiliary that builds the verb phrase.

12. Family guidance and FAQs

Guidance for parents and tutors

Ask “Is the blank naming the prediction or showing someone predicting?” before supplying a spelling. Follow with “Which form does this sentence need?” This keeps help small enough for the learner to complete the reasoning.

Fade support from printed choices to open cloze, paragraph editing and original production. Multiple-choice accuracy can hide dependence on recognition. Independent retrieval after several days is stronger evidence of control.

Correct the process, not the child. “You chose the verb family but missed past tense” is actionable. “You were careless” does not identify a repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is prophecy a verb?

No. Prophecy is the noun. Prophesy is the related verb.

Why do prophecies and prophesies look alike?

One is a plural noun and the other a present-tense verb. Sentence role identifies which is needed.

Must a prophecy come true?

No. It names a prediction. Fulfilment requires later evidence that matches the important conditions.

Can predict always replace prophesy?

It is useful as a grammar test, though the words may differ in tone. Restore the word that fits the passage’s meaning.

What is the fastest reliable check?

Name noun or verb, substitute prediction or predict, apply the ending, and reread once.

How should mistakes be reviewed?

Record whether the first failure involved role, meaning, form or evidence. Practise that stage directly.
